Penelope shakily entered the common room, made a beeline for the nearest sofa, and hit the cushions hard, face first. She hadn't seen anyone else in the room, so she figured it would probably be alright to just sprawl out on a sofa for a minute or two to collect herself. The incident in the hall had left her shaky and fairly sort of teary eyed, and despite it being far more logical to retreat to her room where she was ensured some modicum of privacy, her current disposition was that of just simply not caring. She breathed out heavily, then rolled to one side, rubbing her eyes and hoping to god that they weren't as red and puffy as she suspected they were. She hated crying, or more accurately, she hated the fact that she did it so often. It was just such an ugly thing to do wasn't it? crying...

A movement in the corner of her eye made her sit up with a start. There was someone else in the room!... In a quite obvious spot actually. She really should have seen Daymen... Dancing... by himself... She blinked. Well, that certainly was one of the last things she had expected him to be doing. She didn't really know him that well, but he had always seemed so calm and reserved... She quickly busied herself with straightening her skirt, unsure of what to do. Should she just pretend she hadn't seen anything? She certainly didn't want to embarrass him. Of course, it was pretty obvious that she had seen him, as her reaction had been quite abrupt. So really, ignoring him now would just be plain rude. She sniffed involuntarily before looking back up at him, smiling, and waving. There really wasn't anything wrong with dancing when you were alone. She did it herself all of the time, and to much more embarrassing music than... whatever Daymen was listening to. She didn't know the band.

xXxOpening his deep hazel-brownish eyes as the song yet again came to an end, Damyen could only feel heat rise up to his face. Penelope had shown up sometime during his little goofing off session with the song Tose Naina Lage by Anwar. Pacing sideways over to his laptop, the dark haired male quickly pushed pause before smiling timidly and returning the girl's wave. And then he realized something seemed relatively wrong with her. That was odd. Neither had been in the school very long and yet something was already troubling the female.
xXxCautiously moving a bit closer, he sat down on the floor a few feet away from the auburn haired femme and scratched the back of his neck. “Sorry you had to see that... I thought I'd be like a wallflower for a while longer. Um... If something's bugging you, Penny- er... Miss Penelope, I don't mind listening to it. I, uh, can't promise I won't attempt retaliating against anyone who upset you, but at least I listen and care,” he murmured lightly while briefly fidgeting with the many armbands around his left forearm. His eye then twitched slightly as it clicked that he'd actually clicked the back button and made the song start up again. Not only that, but this female had seen him doing a hiproll-slash-belly dance that his mother taught him how to do in his childhood. That was going to be embarrassing to attempt explaining.

Penelope flushed a bright red. "O-h... N-no, It's... I mean... I'm fine. I mean it's fine! I mean I'm fine! Oh..." She fidgeted nervously. Ug, now she really must look a proper mess, what with her face being all red and... and puffy. She couldn't help it. When people called her Penny... Well, at least it hadn't been a girl who said it. She probably would have broken down into a nervous mess if that had been the case. "... I... It's... there's nothing wrong with it... Dancing I mean. And... And you're, you know, pretty good at it. A-at least, I... I thought so..." She trailed off, staring down at her shoes. "A... Ahem. But really, there's... there isn't anything wrong... really. I mean, th-there is, but... I j-just tend to sort of... I kind of get all... get real weepy... real easy. S-sorry." She blinked. "I know it's-... sorry. I sort of have a hard time... talking." She glanced over at the laptop as it continued to play its tune, then back to Daymen. He seemed like he'd appreciate it if she just didn't mention the song, what with his expression when he saw her watching him and all.

"Er... It really wasn't.. .that... big of a deal. I just sort of got into a... into a bit of a tiff, w-with one of the other students. He sort of... pinned me against a locker. B-but I think he was just trying to scare me... Did a good job too. Ha ha..." She trailed of, and scratched her arm. Did that make it sound worse than it was? No... that was pretty much what happened. Hopefully her omission of any names would keep Daymen from doing anything... unfortunate.

xXxScratching the front of his wrist with his nails as he listened in silence to the girl trying to explain that his dancing was fine, Damyen's eyes briefly glanced down as he attempted not to chuckle and come up with some weird response. His eyes had returned to her figure shortly afterwards though. His way of telling her that he was listening was a slight nod. He wasn't really used to speaking with other people unless it was over a headset attached to a laptop or X-Box 360.

xXxWhen the auburn haired female he knew as Penelope stopped speaking, he could feel his eye twitching and a sting from his arm. “So let me get this straight... A boy from this school pinned you to a locker because he wanted to scare you, possibly?” he asked smoothly while standing back up straight. “What's this lil' fxckers name, appearance and which department is he in? Any guy who thinks that it's fine to pick on a lady deserves a fist to his nose. Actually, that's being nice about it. He technically deserves his entire testes removed 'cause that's just downright pathetic and seriously irritating.

Penelope swallowed audibly. "Wh-what? U-um... I- Ah, no... no no. I mean, no need to... no need to... to do anything... harsh. Rash! I meant rash." She fiddled with a strand of her hair nervously, then, realizing how stereotypically ditzy that seemed, she stopped and forced her hands to remain still in her lap. "I wouldn't want you to go... getting yourself into... that is... I don't think you should go ah... go getting yourself into trouble over me. I-it really wasn't as bad as all that... I mean, well, it was, but there's no need for you to... to worry yourself over it. R-really. I'm fine! No... No harm done. I mean, he didn't actually do anything to me, and... I d-don't... I don't think he was going to." In truth, saying that there was no harm done was a bit of a lie. She had had her wits scared out of her, but that may have just been due to her nervous disposition... Come to think of it, she was still incredibly jittery. Talking to Daymen had made her forget about the fact that she had wanted to go pass out in her room for a while, but now that she thought about it... no! Stop thinking about it!

"U-um. S-so! Where did you... Did someone teach you how to dance? Or... or were you just um... I mean, it was good, so I was just wondering if you maybe... took lessons?" She smiled nervously at her lame attempt to change the subject. "Not that you necessarily have to take lessons to be... to be a good dancer... or anything. A-and by you, I mean... well, people in general, but... but yeah. Did you take lessons?"

xXxStopping himself from interrupting the female, he started scratching at his wrist again as her words sank in. Remaining quiet, he sat down beside his laptop and started running his fingers over the keys with relative ease. As soon as Your Stories, My Alibis by Matchbook Romance started playing, he minimized the screen telling what songs he had on his laptop only to turn the screen so the only picture of his birthparents he had was facing Penelope. He then pointed to the woman for a moment while briefly glancing away. “My mother came from Egypt and since we kept getting stationed over in that area, she taught me what she could while we were over there. Dance was just one of those things...” he rumbled lowly only to pull up the music screen again.

xXxScratching his wrist again, he sat down on the floor beside the couch. “You might've changed topics, but I will find him whether you tell me who it is or not. It wouldn't be the first time I got in trouble over getting into a fight at school and I doubt that last fight I got into at my last school will be my last. Apparently wear black kohl around your eyes makes you weird,” Damyen almost seemed to purr while briefly pointing to his eyes and sticking his tongue out like a kid would do. He then gave a brief shrug before glancing up at Penelope again. “So what's your family like? Mine kinda fell apart...

"O-oh really?" Penelope twiddled her thumbs as she looked the picture over. "Well... they're ah, very pretty. I mean, they make a pretty looking couple! You're mother... she was a... Dancer... Then?"

She trailed off as Daymen began to well, do his masculinity dance, in her opinion. She really wasn't a fan of the whole "Get into trouble to defend a lady's honor" Sort of thing. It gave her the impression that she was believed to be weak, or unable to defend her own honor or whatever you wanted to call it. Of course, she did tend to adhere to the "damsel in distress" Stereotype fairly well due to her constant state of nervousness, but she was fairly certain she'd be just as nervous if she were a boy. She wondered if Daymen would be as adamant about finding the boy if it had been a guy telling him that he had been pinned to a locker... Probably not.

"I don't think it makes you weird. Kids at my old school used to wear that sort of look all the time." She sighed, still preoccupied enough with her previous train of thought to remember to be nervous. She neglected to tell him of course, that her previous school had been an all girl's school, but that was beside the point. And... And I don't think you should go getting yourself... getting yourself into a fight with someone on well, my behalf. That would just make me feel... sort of... absolutely terrible. Forget I mentioned it... I don't think that... ah... I don't think he'll try anything again. It seemed like he was really... well, upset when he got caught so... I'm sure he... I mean, lesson learned. A-anyways, my family was... is... they're sort of pretty normal, except that both of my parents are wizards... I guess they're still pretty normal though. I'm... I'm um, blessed I guess, that they're still happily married... a-and that none of my family members have been... I don't know... killed by a... a serial killer... or something."

xXxDeciding that a shrug was a sufficient answer, Damyen made such a motion at the female's words. “Something like that. Music was like a daily routine for me and her so we found ways to entertain ourselves while cleaning or cooking and while my dad was working,” he answered aloud while continuing his scratching motions with his hands. He then paused only to raise an eyebrow at the female as if asking her if she was serious.

xXxYou do realize that kohl is a bit different from eyeliner right? Not that I believe you're stupid or anything, but just that very few people use the traditional version of kohl due to some users dying of lead poisoning. Lame, but true...” he stated smoothly only to shrug for a third time, his nails returning to scratching his arms. A few seconds later, he was digging in his jacket pocket only to pull a smaller leather strap with silver studs in it out and hold it out to Penelope. “I made this one too small for my stepmother so if it fits, you can keep it. Sounds like you have a good family relationship though. My stepfather thinks I'm either gay or emo because I still wear kohl on my eyes while my stepmother tries diagnosing what is going on in my head because she thinks I still haven't moved on from the accident. Neither take my love for music or technology serious. They think I'm supposed to be a doctor or a quack like they are. Took me forever to get them to agree to me coming here and that was because I told them I was studying under astronomy rather than music.

xXxPausing briefly so he could peek at the scratches under his leather armbands, the dark haired male made a soft 'tch' sound before dropping his arms back out of direct sight. “Alright. Next time, should he do this again, either you pop him in the nose or I'm gonna hunt him down myself. Deal?” he asked with a flicker of a smile passing over his face.

Penelope blushed. "Er... no I didn't know that. But... If it's poisonous, couldn't you... just use eye liner instead? I mean unless there's a ah, a traditional sort of... sort of thing with wearing the... the Kohl, specifically. Just seems dangerous." She fiddled with the fringe of her skirt. staring at the patterns the seams made in the red fabric. Now she just sounded stupid, why would he wear something poisonous unless there was some sort of significance to it? She always asked such obvious questions...

She had stopped looking at Daymen, so when a leather strap being held in his hand suddenly appeared in front of her face, she flinched. "A-ah, Oh. Um... thanks." She blinked and gingerly lifted the strap out of his grasp. that was an odd way to give someone something. He just sort of... gave it to her and changed the subject. "Er... yeah. I think my parents probably think I'm gay too..." She clasped the strap lightly, and rested her hands in her lap. She wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to put it on. It might have some sort of... significance. Like the Kohl. That um... that is a shame though. Music can be ah... a very serious thing! And well, technology... I don't know much about that, but I think in our ah... in our day and age it's... it's probably one of the... the most important... things."

She paled slightly as Daymen talked about her smacking someone... anyone... on the nose. "Er... Well, I'll um... I can give it a try but... A-ah... say... won't your... your step paren't be ah, upset when they find out that you're... well... not in the astronomy department? I mean... what if they come to visit?... or something."

xXxLetting Penelope speak her mind and trying not to laugh a little at her words, the dark haired male rubbed at his wrists for a few minutes instead of scratching only to cross his arms over his chest. “Mm... Kohl was meant to be worn for many reasons due to many superstitions. Wearing it was supposed to help better one's sight, protect the eyes from UV rays, keeping infants from being cursed by the Evil Eye and so on. I continue to wear it in honor of my mother's passing just as I wear my father's dogtags to honor his passing. They're all I have left of them besides what they taught me,” he murmured lightly while starting to fidget with the dogtags around his neck. The dogtags usually kept him trying to remain cheerful, but just thinking about how with just one of their death's ended the entire family's relationship altogether saddened him. He'd been left in a world so unforgiving, cold and alone by his parents and instead of being sent to an aunt and uncle or a grandparent, he'd been sent to an orphanage.

xXxIt's a hobby of mine to make little accessories like these when I'm not being a techgeek. That one's too small for anyone I know so I figured I could just give it away to someone. My step parents, both being psychiatrists, think that by holding onto things my parents did, I'm not moving forwards in life. They don't seem to get that I've already gone through the stages of denial, acceptance and mourning. I finally got them to stop dragging that skeleton out of the closet, but they managed to drag a million others back out,” Damyen sighed somewhat tiredly. It wasn't that he hated his adoptive parents. He just wanted them to stop trying to analyze his every thought by how he walked or sat down. That was what grew irritating.

xXxSubconsciously letting out a snort, his eyes paused on Penelope's form still on the couch behind him. “I'm taking that as an agreement to my deal. As for them finding out I'm in the music department by visiting is a laugh and a half. I told them I'd visit them off-campus if I had the time between my studies and on holidays. They're too embarrassing to be allowed on campus for even a second. It's actually why I was late to getting on campus altogether. They wanted to help me settle in aka analyze roommates and anyone else on campus,” he responded while briefly reaching up with one hand yo poke her on the cheek with a finger. “You should smile more often. You're actually quite a pretty girl and your smile helps bring out that brilliance in your eyes. Sounds like a cheesy pick-up line, but it's quite true. Most people don't get that some of those cheesy pick-up lines are genuine thoughts and feelings people get. Either way you decide on deciphering that, just know that I'm always here if you need a friend.

Penelope wasn't entirely sure HOW to decipher that... compliment? You're ACTUALLY quite a pretty girl? Smile more often? Was Daymen hitting on her? She wasn't sure, and that made it worse. If she told him to stop hitting on her and he hadn't been, then things would be really embarrassing, but if she told him to stop hitting on her, and he had been... then things would be really awkward. At least his offer of friendship seemed genuine. "Um... thanks. I... I a-appreciate it." She scratched the back of her head. "A-and I... I'm... I mean, I'm around... If you ever... you know... need someone to talk to."

She smiled at Daymen tentatively, then realized it had been quiet for a little bit longer than she would have liked.

"I ah... well I can sort of... sort of relate. To the parents thing. I mean, the step parents thing!" She paled slightly. "Ah... Ah... My... my parents aren't doctors or psychiatrists or anything, but my Dad is a lawyer... A er... Wizard, lawyer. Good luck ever, well, winning any sort of argument with him... frustrating... you know? But I mean, at least... at least you know they care. You're step parents, I mean." She re-positioned herself on the couch and pulled a thoughtful face before continuing. "A-and, it probably won't be so bad now... now that you're.. you know... away for a while. It... they shouldn't... Um, they won't be around all the time so it's sort of like.. a vacation!... Not that you necessarily need a vacation from your adopted parents, but it... it doesn't seem like you miss them, o-or maybe you do. I mean I don't... I don't know." Oh GOD, someone shut her up please! She kept attempting to justify her previous statements, and in doing so, she was saying things that felt more and more inappropriate. "I mean, you may not miss them now, b-but ah... If you take some time away from them maybe you'll appreciate them more. N-not that you don't ah... don't appreciate them now it's just that... you know... a-absence makes the... the heart grow fonder." She began to turn pink. What the hell was she saying? Or even trying to say? She hadn't the faintest idea, but shutting up was beginning to sound like a really, REALLY good idea.

xXxLetting a chuckle escape past his lips, the dark haired male took a moment before responding to what the reddish-auburn haired female said. “At least I'll know I'm not completely invisible here. I've attempted starting up conversations or just small talk and been ignored both times. You're the only person who seems to notice me besides what few teachers we've met and even then I'm only noticed because of a headphone in my ear or I asked a question in which I partly want to ask people if they think I'm completely retarded or if I'm being misinterpreted. It happens often enough,” he hummed calmly as he shut his hazel-brown eyes again. His arms shifted back to where the palms of his hands were against his knees although he remained in a relaxed position of leaning against the couch. It was nice knowing she wasn't one to not notice him due to his claustrophobia keeping him as far from crowds as possible.

xXxI understand what you mean, Miss Penelope. You're telling me that although I find their presence and how they go about things irritating now, after some time of having my own space I will eventually start to miss them being there. It happens to most people, especially children taking that first step into adulthood. While parents or even step parents seem controlling when we're still young and naive thus making us dislike them, we will still love them for the time they spent caring for us and preparing us for the real world,” Damyen breathed with that light smile still in place. Curling his toes up in his sneakers for a moment before releasing them and then repeating the process a few times, he considered how to state his feelings without seeming mean or heartless. Incapable of really finding his answer, he exhaled slowly only to open his eyes again.

xXxIt's not that I dislike them though... I miss my real parents being there and before I even had a chance to fully accept their deaths, I had them trying to make me feel like I was actually their kid. It was my rough patch in life and the next thing I knew was two complete strangers were telling me that although I wasn't exactly what they were looking for, I just seemed to call out to them for guidance and apparently therapy. They're nice people and tried to get to know me, but then I just turned into another one of their patients. I had to write down my dreams, talk to them about my past and how it made me feel...” he sighed before taking a pause. Why did it irritate him to talk about this to most people and yet he was openly talking about it with someone he just met? She did seem to understand the irritation he felt towards his step parents though. “My stepfather attempted putting me in an isolation tank-thing to get "deeper" into my head yet only managed to make me start freaking out. He learned quickly that I don't handle small enclosed spaces too well. To them I've gone from stepson to patient to 'should this kid be put in a straitjacket?' and then back to being a patient that skipped many sessions just to sit on the roof or locked away in my bedroom just playing a guitar, writing crazy stories or lost in mechanics and technology. I'm not sure if I'd actually miss them though...” This statement then led to a tired sigh, him rubbing his hands over his face and then starting to flip through his files until he found Not Strong Enough by Apocalyptica featuring Brent Smith. Once found, he let that song start up before setting his laptop on the coffee table and awaiting Penelope's response to his - well to him it was weird - honesty.

Penelope sat in silence, listening to Daymen as he told her a bit about his step parents, and the relationship he had with them. So... It sounded a little bit worse than just some overprotective and over worried step parents, the kind she had been thinking about. Of course she could have guessed that her assumptions would be inaccurate, seeing as they had been based off of the basic "My parents are overbearing" feeling that she assumed most kids had had at some point. She couldn't help but feel grateful for having "normal" parents. Well, normal if you ignored their slightly abnormal professions. Of course this also meant that she had very little (or really, absolutely no) idea how to respond to a life story like Daymen's. That was fine though, she was fairly used to having no idea how to respond to things.

She stood, straightened her skirt, tentatively approached the boy, and sat down beside him, her legs folded as neatly underneath her as was possible. "... I don't know." She shrugged. "Maybe... they don't know any other way to show that they care? I mean... Mental health is supposed to be... er... real important for um... overall wellness... I... I can't begin to claim that I... you know, that I'm an expert... on these matters but... Have you ever told them how you feel about the way they treat you?" What was she, his psychologist? She hoped he didn't feel that she was trying to "fix" him too. It was just... well, it certainly seemed to be a matter that caused him great distress. She had a hard time ignoring things that caused her friends distress... She supposed that they were friends now weren't they? Seemed that way... how did one ever really find out about that anyways?...

Nope. Stick to the topic at hand. She fiddled with her tie. "I mean... it sounds like they care about you... It sounds like they care a lot, they just... well being a psychiatrist doesn't... doesn't necessarily mean that they know how to be... parents. O-of course, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about... I don't know. It's... just a thought."

She stared hard at the floor, tugging at her tie. It seemed like they were suddenly trying to psychoanalyze Daymen's life, and from what had found out about him (quite recently) that didn't seem like something he much enjoyed. So, she though maybe, a change of topic might be nice. "Soo... you like music a lot... I mean, obviously, i-if you're in the music department. Do you... do you do anything besides play guitar. Not that... not that you have to! I just mean... u-uh, do you sing o-or, play any other instruments? It's just ah... well, most of the time "music" students tend to have a backup instrument that they... that they play too... or something. Of course if you don't that's fine too... everything's... everything's fine. I just thought that... well, that I'd... U-um, I play the bass... sometimes, but usually the... the piano. Nothing... fancy. Not like classical or anything... mostly jazz or... indie stuff. B-but... yeah... Play anything besides guitar?"

xXxFlashing that cheerfully sweet yet somewhat mischievous smile of his, the dark brownish-black haired male murmured the simple statement, “Maybe and thanks for listening to my ranting.” Unfortunately, his face became a light shade of red when she asked if he had any other musical talents besides the guitar. Starting to rub his wrist again, he leaned forwards a bit. He hadn't really expected that question to come into the conversation. Shifting a bit from where he sat, he tried thinking about how to answer that.

xXxUm... I kind of play the flute, but I'm better at the guitar. My choir teacher at my last school also said that I have an odd singing voice. His words being that I have the voice that is a mash-up of being that of almost every genre of music out there and with a bit of vocal training, I could actually be a very popular singer. I doubt my singing abilities though. I figured I'd just be a guitarist and maybe a back-up singer so that way my voice isn't really heard all too often,” he finally answered somewhat shyly as he paused with fidgeting around. Glancing back up at Penelope, he scratched the back of his neck lightly. “I really only came to this school to see if the music teacher here could teach me to read sheet music. I've played most of my music just based off of sound since I can't really read a lick of sheet music. I've always based any type of music around me on trying to match my voice, the guitar and the flute to that already being played in songs or just goofing off to find a good tune that fits together.

Penelope smiled. "I'm... I'm sure that... well, that they do... We'll probably go over that sort of... of stuff. It is a music class after all."

She glanced at a clock hanging on the wall above the entrance to the common room. "...Oh... OH." She squeaked, startled. "Um... U-um, we're, we're late for class!" She scrambled to her feet. "Er... don't you think... well, ah... we should probably be... be going yeah?"
