"You deserve it. You have been so kind to me today. Taught me new things, befriended me, and even laughed with me." Whisper said to the mare. "I could never forget you, and I'd never want you to forget me." Whisper got a bit emotional, thinking back about his youth, his parents, and everything that happened. He wondered about his parents for a moment, and how he had still remembered them, even though he was young when it all happened. "I guess you're right, memories are pretty hard to forget." he said with a bit of sadness to his voice.
Whisper returned the gesture, rubbing his head against her. "it seems like the rain is slowing down. I wonder if others will come out."

Cocomin, sensing emotion behind his words, looks into Whisper's eyes for a moment before slowly nodding. He didn't seem to want to talk about whatever he had been thinking and she didn't want to push. Putting on a grin, "They're all silly, hiding from a little sky water." A brief nudge on the side of his neck and she darts off and into deeper water.
Pausing after a moment that sent her a fair distance away, Cocomin looks back, her grin even wider. "What say we race until we see someone? Maybe your brother, I'd love to meet him." Her expression one of playful entreaty.

Whisper cracked a small smile after being nudged by Cocomin. She always seemed to know the exact time when he need a nudge to cheer up, and for that, Whisper was thankful. For this moment, everything except for his new friend had drifted away from his mind, and he was hell bent on catching up to her.
Whisper darted as fast as he could towards her, hoping to gain some 'ground' quickly. "You wanna race me?" he asked jokingly, as his long hair drifted back behind him. "You stand no chance!" he laughed, trying with all his might to catch up to her.

Cocomin smiles and waits until Whisper gets fairly close before she takes off again. She's always been a fairly powerful swimmer, having to compete with some powerful currents and tides when she explores, but while she's strong, she isn't the fastest swimmer. Of course, that's why she made sure she had a body's length head start.
Her laughter streaming along behind her, Cocomin dodges around a large growth of coral and past some tall, waving fronds. She could feel Whisper gaining on her, but that was half the fun. The occasional glance back ensured he was still following. He was quick, she wondered if he would catch her before he tired or they met someone else.

As he tried with all of his might, Whisper thought he'd never actually catch up to the mare. Even after this short time, Whisper felt defeated. Maybe it was that he had really spent a lot of energy today; although he hadn't thought that he had used up so much energy. Whisper stopped for a moment, and looked ahead. It was then he realized just how fast Cocomin really was, and just how far ahead she was.
Whisper gathered his energy back up, and darted after the mare again. This time he felt confident that he could actually catch her. He swam as his little fins could take him, not paying any attention to how far behind he was. "Just stay focused," he encouraged himself, "You'll get her, you stud!" he laughed to himself.

Cocomin noticed Whisper falling behind and paused when he did. The sudden burst of speed caught her by surprise and he made great progress towards her before, with a small 'eep' of consternation, she started forward again.
He was much quicker this time. Enough that she knew he'd catch her. Cocomin had stamina that let her swim for hours against strong currents. But speed was never her strong suit. In a race, she was sure Whisper would win a sprint. But for a long haul, she judged she'd be able to keep going past when his speed had slowed him down.
But . . . this wasn't really a race. And Cocomin didn't really want to win. She wanted to be caught. And it was affecting her speed. So were the giggles of pleasure at the fun she was having.

Whisper hoped that his sudden burst of speed would linger for just a bit longer, and that he'd soon be on her heels, although he thought it to be a big hope. "I can do this!" he said to himself as a bit of self-motivation. As he thought to himself, he swore he could hear giggles coming from the mare. "Is this some game to you?" he hollered out. "I'll catch you," he continued, 'mark my words, I'll catch you!"

Cocomin calls back, "Of course!" But his words just made her determined to make him work for it. She knew he'd catch her, and it was quite the game. But still, she stopped giggling and put on a little more speed.
She wasn't used to actually swimming all out like this. She very rarely had to try and avoid anything. Cocomin normally stayed in waters she knew, where she knew hiding places. So even if a predator came after her, she could quickly put herself in a cave, behind some coral, or otherwise out of their reach.
She needed to work on her speed. And, for all that she could swim at a decent pace all day, the strain of the race was starting to tell. But she knew how to push past the burn of tired muscles. She wasn't there yet.
Cocomin couldn't help but steal a glance back, and saw Whisper alarmingly closer than she had expected. He really was fast. He would catch her. The only question was if she could think of a place for that to happen that would change the game.
That thought in mind, she started veering to the left. It meant he would be able to gain a bit more distance by cutting the corner she was taking, but it would be worth it.

Whisper continued to dart as he kept a keen eye on the mare. As he watched, he saw her turn and look at him. "Keep swimming!" he yelled as encouragement, with a bit of tantalization, "I'm onto you!" he finished with a giggle. He was determined more than ever to catch her, especially since by now he thought she'd have given in.
Whisper remembered back to his youth when he'd race with his brother. "What fun days those were," he thought to himself, averting his attention for a moment, "we had some really good races!"
Just then, Whisper caight a glance of the mare making a turn to the left. "What is that crazy mare doing?" he asked to himself. Suddenly, a sense of worry came over him. "Is everything ok?" he asked the mare, giving a much stronger push to reach her.

Cocomin hears the worry in Whisper's voice and feels bad for a moment. But she hopes it means he isn't paying attention to where she was leading them.
A swell in the ocean floor hid what was just behind it and she quickly swam over it, dropping down on the other side and turning to look back at the stallion. Coral reefs weren't particularly unusual, but this one seemed to have the best and brightest colors.
Cocomin waits until he crests the swell to smile. "Everything is wonderful." If she times it right, she's hoping to surprise him with how near she is, knowing he would have lost sight of her when she dropped behind the rise.

Whisper was happy to hear her response, but was curious as to why it sounded so much closer than he thought she was. He looked around quickly, trying to track her, when suddenly he saw her much closer. "Did you just cheat?" he asked, wondering where she had come through. Whisper was dumbfounded for a moment.

Cocomin laughs. "Cheat? Maybe. Maybe it was magic. Or maybe you just weren't paying attention. Does it matter? This is the most spectacular reef around. And it holds a secret I just happen to know." She grins, enjoying teasing him just a bit. She's still a bit winded from the race but there is an exhileration in the moment that overwhelms any tiredness.
