Gale swooped down to where she had made her small nest in a grove of trees. She settled down, a soft smile etched permanently on her mouth as she curled up, thinking about the handsome stallion she had just met and would see again tomorrow.
It was the first night of actual sleep she'd gotten in years.
She woke as the sun crested over the hill and rose herself, stretched before she took flight to find the lake Varteres had spoken of the night before.

Varteres had slept wonderfully that night and when he awoke, his family was wondering why he was in such a chipper mood. He told them they may find out someday soon, but for now, he had to go out. Once he could get away from his questioning family, he galloped off to the lake.
When he arrived there, he bent his head down and took a drink, before waiting vigilantly for his new friend to arrive.

Gale swooped down, the wind whistling under her dark wings as she did so. She landed lightly, despite her hard hooves on the soft ground. A soft, graceful smile lit up her face when she saw the equal serenity on her friend's face. Her eyes took in the sight of him, looking at what she couldn't see in the dark of the night before. "Good afternoon, Varteres. I trust you made it home safe then?"

Varteres smiled as he heard the familiar voice of his new friend and he nodded.
"Yes, I arrived home in one piece and had a wonderful night of sleep. I can see you also got where you needed to go safely, which makes me very happy. My family noticed how happy I was when I got home and were kind of curious,"he laughed.

Gale smiled at her new friend, wondering what it was like to have someone wondering over your welfare. "Whats it like? Having a family like that?" She asked softly.

Varteres thought about it for a moment, trying to think how to describe it.
"Well, it is definitely nice to have people who care about you and are always there for you when you need them. I know I can always count on them to help me when I am in trouble. I love my family and I know they love me,"he spoke softly.

"Then you must feel very protected." Nightingale said softly as she flexed her wings above her back and then settled them back down, nearly hiding her speckled black sides from view as her eyes cast downwards to study her hooves.

Varteres nodded his head, thinking he really did feel very protected.
"Yes, that is true, I do feel like I am always being watched over, especially when my chosen is determined to keep us all safe. Ever since my twin became ome of her bonded, she has become a lot more determined. Do you have others to protect you?"he asked.

Nightingale was quiet for a moment before she shook her head. "No... I do not. It is only me." She said softly as she looked into the water, gazing at her reflection and wondering once again if she had any siblings out there somewhere.

Varteres looked over to his friend with a sad look in his eyes, wishing there was something he could do for her.
"You know, if you wanted, I could always be around to watch over you. I mean, everyone should have someone looking out for them, especially in dark times like this,"he suggested.

Nightingale gave a small smile of appreciation, her dark eyes glittering with kindness. "You are very kind, Varteres. Someday you will find your mate, and she will be the luckiest in the world."

Varteres smiled brightly and bowed his head to her, letting her know he appreciated her kind words.
"Thank you kindly for your words, I do hope to find a love to protect and love with a deep love. I believe you will find a mate as well, someone who will watch over you,"he spoke.

"You have already offered..." Gale said lightly, watching his face for any sign of his emotions. Had it just been an offhand offer? Or had he really meant it? Did he feel the stirrings in his heart that she was feeling? She needed to know, without giving her heart away.

Varteres smiled softly, seeing she had been paying attention to that fact. He looked over at her and seemed to get lost in her eyes, feeling his hearts stirring in his chest.
"You are quite right, I did indeed offer to watch over you. Perhaps, I was hinting a little myself that I could be that special someone in your life,"he replied ever so gently.

Nightingale smiled and shuffled her hooves, leaving grooves in the soft dirt beneath her. "Well. I suppose I could accept the offer... so long as your heart is in the right place?" She asked, looking up at him from beneath long lashes
