Becka visibly backed up when Aleck spoke, waving a finger. She'd never heard the young man quite so... well she didn't know but she didn't like it. She'd just arrived.... her favorite dragon was badly hurt, her Master was dying... and as far as she knew, from the sounds of things, she was the only healer available. Tears sprang to her eyes as Aleck kept on 'ranting' to her, flinching whenever he gestured. "I'm s...s...s...sorry... i'm doing my b..b..b....best" she sniffed, in truth she was trying to hold herself together, she knew she was needed but her head was spinning with the information and the stress. She ran past him, away from him and his anger, towards the door and into the Infirmary, she spoke quickly to the weyrbrat at the door. "Aleck said to tell you that the message got through, please... let me in, i'm an apprentice healer" she said to Carltis, eyeing his whip worriedly.

Once inside she located Bereck quickly, glancing around and finding some water, she tore of peices of her shirt as she knew it was clean and began washing Bereck's wounds. "Bereck... it's me Becka, Berath is just outside, she's with Aleck" she said quietly to him, not knowing if he could hear her or not but her voice cracked a little, the moans of the injured ringing too loudly in her ears as she cleaned Bereck up. Once the wounds were clean, some still bleeding badly, she bound them all up tightly, trying to stop the bleeding for the time being while she located Supplies for stitching.

[Carltis]

"It's about sodding time one of you buggers came back," Carltis snapped, stepping out of the way with his hand still resting on his coiled whip. "The healer's over there," he gestured, "stop snuffling and do your job will you girlie? If you let him die we lose our current best defence against enemies coming in from outdoors."

She was off about her duty quickly enough, so he supposed he couldn't complain. After a few moments he stalked after her, just in case she needed an extra pair of hands or anything heavy shifted. Seeing her start to cast around he jerked a thumb at the cupboards where he'd stored everything. "Stuff's in there, I'll fetch; what are you after? Don't give me any technical terms because I probably won't understand them."

*********

[Bereck]

Pain. It was distant, but he was aware of it and... something. Something wanting his attention. Pain.

The red-haired healer shifted slightly under Becka's hands, his face contorting with agony, and a quiet whimper escaped his lips.

*********

[Berath]

As the apprentice ran off Berath shifted restlessly. She knew that one well, though competing thoughts were keeping her name from mind, and she knew she didn't do well with stress and pressure. She was the only healer there was to help Bereck, and she was only an apprentice. That was a lot of pressure. the solid green said to Aleck, though her tones were not the most positive ever. She was scared. She was trying hard to be strong, but she was so very scared....

Was that Bereck stirring? Eye flashing brighter yellow she reached towards him. He did not reach back, but she could feel that he was closer to awareness. He hurt. He hurt so much!

Whining very softly, Berath turned her head to the infirmary door. "Brrrrrrrr...."

Good job, Aleck, you made her cry. This was turning out to be a spectacular day.

The corner of Aleck's mouth deepened, brows tensing together in displeasure. His anger had dissolved at the first sign of tears, and though irritation remained, he didn't know that the outburst had been worth it. Both Bereck and Berath injured, dragon and rider, each relying on the other, and he was trying to see to them both. It was like trying to hold up both ends of a falling bridge..

He'd have to trust her.

"Yeah," Aleck sighed. A look of concern flashed across his face at the keening sound, but priorities. "I'll get you patched up." He laid a hand over Berath's good eyeridge, then moved into the recovery room to get supplies. Dragon or human, it was basically the same.. except don't give them fellis, but he wasn't a rank to administer the stuff anyway.

Becka turned her head to the voice of Carltis again and sighed with relief, she hadn't particularly wanted to move away from Bereck and she hadn't been able to see the wound still bleeding in his back. She hummed a little to herself to try and concentrate "I need more bandages... and a needle and that thread we use for stitching people up" she said to him, pointing to the places the supplies were usually kept. "Then i need you to come back here and help turn him a little so i can see what's still bleeding in his back" she added, indicating the pool of blood surrounding the man "We'll need to move him somewhere cleaner when i've stopped the bleeding" she added.

When Bereck whimpered Becka got a little excited, if he was aware enough to feel pain that meant that he wasn't about to die on her.... yet but it also pained her to know that he was hurting and badly enough to feel it while unconcious. "Bereck, i'm so sorry it hurts, I'm doing my best... doing what you taught me to do" she said to him, a reassuring hand on his shoulder while she waited for Carltis to fetch her what she needed.

[Carltis]

All this was very much not his field. Carltis gave a stiff nod and strode over to the cupboards, grabbing more than he thought was needed because too much was better than not enough. Coming back over he set the spool of thread, a little pair of sharp scissors, and a box of needles down on the little table beside the bed where the jug of water and cup Aleck must have brought over earlier still were.

"Aleck and I did our best," he felt compelled to say as he set the rolls of bandages in her reach too. "We tried but... well we're not healers. Those cuts are deep." When he had first been binding up the old man's wounds he had been sure he'd seen a flash of white in the depths of one of the wounds on his side. Bone. He had definitely seen it in the one going down his chest. "...So what do you reckon his chances are? Uh. And just tell me how you want him moved."

*********

[Bereck]

He thought he heard a voice, but he couldn't make out the words. That something still wanted his attention too but he couldn't focus. Couldn't think. Couldn't move. Where was Aleck? Aleck had been... had been... there had been fighting, and Aleck had been there.

Bereck's lips moved as he almost mumbled something, but what he had been trying to say was unclear.

*********

[Berath]

Rumbling her acknowledgement, the huge green hunkered down to wait for Aleck's return.

Becka waited for Carltis to return, wondering actually... if she shouldn't deal with the multiple wounds on his front and sides first, but they were clean and bandaged and weren't bleeding as badly as that back wound. "It's ok Carltis..... wait.... i'm the only healer here?!" she said, then shook her head, there wasn't a great deal of time. She noticed Bereck's lips moving and bent to see if she could hear anything but she couldn't make anything out "Bereck, don't try to talk yet, you're bleeding very heavily, i need to clean you up and stitch the wounds... this next bit is going to hurt, i'm so sorry master Bereck" she said, on the verge of tears. "He'll probably live... if i can get these wounds to stop bleeding......ok, i need you to help me keep him straight, just roll him gently towards you, shoulder and him, try not to twist him" she said to Carltis, ready when the big weyrbrat moved her master. Quickly she cleaned the wound and took care of as many heavily bleeding vessels as she could find until the wound was only lightly seeping. That would dry over and scab well enough, no fear of him bleeding beneath stitching. She sewed the large, ugly wound up as best she could though both she and likely Carltis, were sweating with the effort, she'd tried to be as quick as she could but she was also methodical, making sure she hadn't missed anything since it was the first time she'd actually done such major 'repair' work. Quickly she cleaned it up and rubbed a little numbweed around it, now that it was stitched it was safe to apply. "Ok gently down now Carltis, i'll have to bandage it up later when he's sitting, for now it will do"

"I'm fine for now thank you Carltis, can you go and see how many are badly wounded for me? ... try and find out who needs me first, when i'm done with Bereck?" she asked, guessing the man wouldn't be comfortable just standing around, that and he made her nervous, despite his help. She methodically began taking care of the larger wounds, a pit in her stomach making her feel terribly sick when she sighted bone in an especially deep slash on his chest. She hadn't had time to notice it the first time she cleaned out the wound but she saw it this time. She sweated as she worked on closing the deeper muscle tissue before working her way upwards, she prayed that she'd not done any permanent nerve damage. She finished patching him up as best she could, the smaller wounds she left open as, despite her cleaning them and making them bleed again, were already crusting over with dried blood.

Aleck could hear them talking as he rattled about in the cupboards, depleting the setup that had been so nicely organized not long before. Bandages, the broad ones more like cloth bolts, sheets of gauze, numbweed, redwort.. he piled it all into a broad-rimmed bowl no one had thought to take or smash, and wrestled it clumsily into his arms with a clinking and clattering of pots. While he couldn't make out words it seemed the apprentice was doing all right, and he hastened on before he could hear the forecasted outlook.

Focus, focus.

"Be right back," he told Berath, setting the stuff down on an exam table. He was, not long later, awkwardly balancing a full jug of water in his grip. "She's taking care of him," Aleck told the concerned dragon. "Carltis is helping." If he said it, it would have to be true. He approached Berath with the jug, peering past her into the dragon side of the complex. "Maybe in there," he suggested, "where there's drains?"

[Carltis]

She seemed optimistic... which was good. Then again she hadn't seen the blood all over the floor of the room where he'd been attacked. Didn't matter anyway right now he supposed, not a lot he could do.

Following instruction silently he found his mind wandering back to what was happening to his home, wondering if he was on the right side. The revolution said everything he felt, addressed all the stupidity that Weyrs ignored or actually said was 'right'. No following some slip of a girl whose shiny dragon got horny at the right time, or stupid men on stupid bronzes that happened to fly well.

He should have joined them.

Too late now; he'd fought too many of them, and got himself all involved with Aleck and his father. He couldn't go and join them now he was face to face with this.

"There's nobody else in here," Calrtis replied with a glance over at the apprentice, "Only us so far. You said the message got out though, so we might see some allies soon; that dragon - whatever her name is - was to tell dragons she trusts that we're here holding the infirmary."

**********

[Bereck]

The voice again, still not making sense, still distant. "...Al'ck?" The mumbled sound was barely there on a weak breath, but it had definitely been a conscious effort to speak. Aleck had been here. Where was he now?

**********

[Berath]

Aleck's return was more than welcome, as was his reassurance. It wasn't much, but it was something. she replied, getting to her feet and padding wearily in the right direction. she added, That was something he might say. It was comforting, in a small way.

Becka slumped into a seat when she was done, she was shaking and sweating. She sat forwards and put her face in her hands and tried to breathe calmly as now she was done, everything began to overwhelm her and she'd begun hyperventilating, which wasn't good she knew, it could make you pass out... and these people needed her. She rubbed her face and looked at Carltis when he spoke to her, the sound making her jump a little. "Let's hope Berath's call brings us some better qualified healers.... i can't keep doing this" she gestured to Bereck's injuries, it was a lot for any healer to take on alone.... let alone an apprentice, not even ready for Journeyman yet. She closed her eyes for a moment, snapping them open when she heard the faintest of voices from Bereck's direction. She shot up and moved to his bedside, oh thank Faranth he was awake enough to say something... hopefully the numbweed was working on the stitched up wounds. "Al...ck... OH! Aleck... you want Aleck!?" she turned to Carltis, "Go see if Aleck has finished patching Berath up, tell him his father asked for him" she said with a smile "Bereck, you need to talk to Berath, she's hurt and very very tired, she needs to know you're ok" she said, clasping the man's hand tightly.

[Carltis]

"Watch who you give orders to girl," Carltis snapped back, "I happen to be on guard duty here. Fine though, I'll go tell him, and if any revolutionists kick that door over there down just be sure to scream nice and loud so I can come and save your sorry arse." Shooting the apprentice a dark look, Carltis stalked towards the door that led into the huge cavern of the dragon infirmary.

**************

[Bereck]

He heard sounds, and was vaguely aware of somebody touching him again. Something bad was happening. Bad and fear filled up the tiny sliver of awareness he had regained.

The healer's eyelids flickered, but no more than as if he were dreaming.

"...'leck?"

Aleck had to be here somewhere. Had to be.

Becka eyed Carltis, shards he was pissy just because she TOLD him to do something rather than asking, Becka didn't reply, instead trying to focus on Bereck, she didn't deserve to be snapped at like that, it made her feel terrible, especially when she was trying to hard to keep it together.

Bereck spoke again and Becka smiled wider, tears rolling down her face, unnoticed. "Bereck, it's me... Becka... Aleck is taking care of Berath but Carltis is going to fetch him, don't worry, he'll be here soon" not in the least bit feeling slighted since Aleck WAS Bereck's son after all, of course he'd want to see the young man first but Becka couldn't let go of Bereck's hand, his hand... shards it was cold... Becka could have kicked herself, there Bereck was lying in his own blood, she'd forgotten that they needed to move him but they'd need to do it gently.. perhaps the men could do it, Becka wasn't a strong girl by any means. Blankets.... dumb.... dumb...dumb.... i forgot to put blankets over him she berated herself, slapping the heel of her hand to her forehead, she let go of Bereck's hand for a moment "Don't worry i'll be right back master Bereck" she said, rushing to search in the usual place for blankets, grabbing a couple she rushed back to Bereck's bedside, covering him in them to keep him warm.

The Bereckism did something to mitigate the trail of ichor Berath left across the stony floor, even garnering a weak smile. "Yeah," Aleck agreed, stepping carefully around the green dripped in her wake; stepping on it didn't seem right. He'd only been in the dragons' side of the infirmary a few times, and it was just so much bigger. The ceiling was another full floor high, and the slight breeze coming from the wide-mouthed opening where patients could enter made it seem that much more like a giant cave. There were grooves in the floor - carved shallow basins for wound-washing that led to drains - and hooks in the ceiling holding tough canvas slings like windless sails, all reminding an observer that dragonhealers had big jobs.

Thank Faranth Berath was a cooperative green.

"Just here." Aleck stopped at the first drainage basin he came to and fumbled the bowl of things down to the floor. Numbweed was powerful stuff; he couldn't feel any pain in his shoulder, but all this movement couldn't be good for it. Bereck would lecture him, tell him to keep it immobile - but as it was, he would be mobile for him.

"Eye first, Berr?" he suggested once he'd retrieved the water jug. It was a softer tone than he'd taken with Becka, closer to his usual voice. Start at the top and work his way down - that was sensible, his brain told him. As the great green obligingly lowered her head, Aleck rested the jug against her eyeridge and tipped out a gentle stream of water, feeling not quite right watching her eyelid's tattered edges flutter in the flow.

[Berath]

she replied softly,

He did do quite wonderfully, for an untrained young man whose world had just been horribly shaken. There was water, and slatherings of numbweed, and bandages where possible. Most notably bandages went over her injured eye, taking away the uneasy sensation of the lids twitching.

Just as Aleck was cleaning his hands, Berath raised her head suddenly and gave an uncertain warble. He was not awake, but he was there somewhere, distantly aware of what was going on around him.

***********

[Carltis]

At more or less the same moment, Calrtis stalked in with his hand resting on his whip. "Oi, Aleck!" he called sharply, but not unkindly. "Your Dad's.... Not awake, but he's mumbling your name.... I think," he ended somewhat lamely. He just wasn't used to dealing with people giving a s**t about each other; it was all kind of awkward and squirmy.

***********

[Bereck]

He didn't hear the apprentice's words.

He wasn't even aware of it when she hurried off to find clean blankets.

"A...aleck."
PostPosted: Sun Jul 08, 2012 5:32 pm

Becka's brow creased into a frown. "Aleck's coming Bereck, don't worry... don't strain to talk.." she said, trying to be comforting but she was scared. If he was waking up, surely he'd be trying to speak to Berath too ... but all he wanted was Aleck, that was fine by Becka, she didn't mind that he didn't see to know she was there but she wasn't about to leave him alone, not until Aleck showed up and took over so she could go and see about the other people that needed helping. She looked up and towards the door of the Infirmary "Please let someone come.. " she whispered to herself, knowing that there was no way she could do all this on her own and so far the only un-injured people she'd come across had been Aleck and Carltis, neither of them knew that much about healing, Aleck perhaps more than Carltis, simply because his father was a healer but the young man wasn't an Apprentice. Becka fought back a sob as she thought of all the people she had to help in the infirmary, while it wasn't all that many for a masterhealer like Bereck to cope with, it was too much for Becka but she was trying hard, like she knew Berath was, to stay strong but not just for Bereck... for everyone that needed her help.

"Shells- really?" Aleck nearly fumbled the water jug into the basin and scrambled to his feet, pausing to wipe his hands dry on his pants before he was moving at a brisk walk past Carltis - not running, because you never ran in the infirmary - for the door. Then he jinked neatly around the corner and was gone, leaving the healing supplies behind.

"Thanks!" his voice floated back a second later. Just because you were in the middle of a bloody upheaval didn't mean you couldn't be polite.

"Dad." This time it was Aleck who took no notice of Becka at first as he slowed from a fast clip. Fingers, slightly cool and damp, grasped the healer's - did they feel colder? Warmer? - as the brunet looked over his father worriedly. "Dad, hey. I'm here." He took note of her work, though; a quick glance registered less blood, more bandages. Neater ones, too.
