The outfit

Faylinn arrived at the Brighton Estate all dressed up. She was comforted to see some of the other family members up ahead of her, already heading inside. The estate was quite impressive, but did anyone truly expect any less from the Brightons? Fay walked inside and surveyed the area for anyone she recognized, besides her own family members of course and the hosts. She wasn't sure what to expect of the night, but that made everything all the more exciting. She wasn't sure that some of the people there looked as though they were approachable, however, so she hung back and waited for an opportunity to strike up a conversation with someone. Maybe she would even see someone she recognized well enough to talk to as well. She could talk to her relatives, but this was a party, she didn't want to crowd them and be a hanger on.

Newlyn kept a listless smile on her drawn face as she entered the ballroom, flanked by her younger sisters. Their father was absent, as usual, but everyone knew that Mitchell Vass was a reclusive, antisocial man. He was also horrible father, but only his daughters were privy to that information. The dark haired eldest took it upon herself to keep up appearances, even when all she wanted to do was hide away in her room all summer. She kept a hand on each of her sisters' shoulders for a moment longer, before releasing them and retreating to a corner to stand in poised, elegant, utterly miserable silence, hands clasped behind her back.

Elsie gave her older sister a sad smile, and nervously looked around. Nearly everyone here was much, much older, but she spied a sulking boy sitting by himself in a chair. Ah hah. Another discontented child. Someone she and her sister could make conversation with and conveniently avoid the intimidating old people. "Come on, Morven," she said in a hushed tone, grabbing her sister's hand and dragging her over to the lone boy. "Hello!" she said brightly. "I'm Elsbeth Vass. I'm eleven. Who are you?"

Morven had nearly been handed off the house elves, but she'd threatened to pitch a temper tantrum of epic proportions if Newlyn dared make her spend the night with a bunch of spoiled little brats whose rich parents brought them along to show off before vanquishing to a nursery. That was what her grim little train of thought had been anyways. She hadn't grabbed the invitation out of the fire he father had chucked it into and burned her fingers for naught. She'd never been to a ball before, and she blamed Mitchell for tossing away every invitation they had ever gotten. But not this time. She smirked triumphantly as she reflected, before stupid Elsie dragged her off to go make small talk with some boy. She jerked her hand free of her sister's and put on a clearly fake smile. "Morven Vass. Nine." she chirped in a sugary tone, but her blue eyes were like shards of ice.

Landon could tell she was nervous as hell. Then again he knew she always had a book on hand. “Why thank you for the compliment.” He said with a smile. Sure dashing was an ancient term but it was a compliment none the less. “It’s very nice to see you here this evening.” He told her honestly. “I must admit I was a bit shocked to be invited.” Landon was still trying to believe it. “So may I get you anything? A drink perhaps?” he asked Germaine.

∳ ∳ ∳ For my entire life I never knew what love was like,
But now I've felt it's touch, and it's far too much for me to hold inside.
∳ ∳ ∳
═════════════════════════════════════════════════

Damien could sense that Marina was uncomfortable. He recalled her nervousness at the Masquerade the previous summer, and supposed that the rather elegant and high-class event he'd invited her to was at least a bit more intimidating. He doubted if his father was making things any better, standing with them looking like a snake, coiled and ready to strike... which, he effectively was. With all the rumors circulating (and yes, Damien had heard them), he had no doubt his father was prepared for some sort of social backlash. He'd never been the social sort; he had connections, certainly, but events like this had always been more his mother's thing. Damien sighed at the thought, and gave Marina a light kiss on the cheek before whispering in her ear. "You look lovely, you know. Have I told you that?" He took his hand from hers to wrap around her shoulders, his hand light at the nape of her neck. It was a possessive posture, but meant more for reassurance to her that he was there for her than to claim her as his... although he certainly didn't mind it if other people were to take note of the fact that, yes, in fact, she was. Only because she'd allowed herself to be, of course.

He quirked a brow when they were joined by the McHalen family, including Michelle and Grace. He'd expected Michael and the twins, but the two of them came as a surprise. Michelle, he knew for a fact, was living with Adalaide, and he wondered what would have prompted her to join her father and half-sisters at such an event; she didn't see the type to enjoy such things, after all. And he knew that Grace hadn't been much for social events since the death of her parents, quite understandably. The fact that her hair was a pretty brown rather than something bright and unnatural only added to the effect. But, then, perhaps she was here, expecting to see Dom? He offered the girls a smile, though, inclining his head.
"Hello, Michelle, Grace. I didn't expect to see the two of you here tonight. You both look very nice." Michelle was in all white, which seemed to have become something of a trademark with the pale girl. It was as though she enjoyed her dark eyes being the only contrast to her fair skin. Standing next to her cousin, she looked even paler. Of course, both of them had nothing on Marina, but he would never say such a thing aloud... except perhaps if his girlfriend were feeling self-conscious. It was a rare thing, but she did have her moments. He rubbed her neck gently before moving his hand to the somewhat more socially acceptable location on her shoulder. No need to send himself home to a lecture, after all.

                                                          ═════════════════════════════════════════════════

Wesley stiffened when Michael McHalen approached, not out of any sort of distaste or anything of that nature, but because tonight, he was on edge, and alert. He glanced at his son and Marina, who had been greeted by Michelle, Michael's oldest daughter (and one who's home life might be more complicated than Damien's, if his son had the right information). Satisfied that the teens would all get along well enough not to do anything rash, given that, last he'd heard, his son and Michelle weren't on the best of terms, he relaxed somewhat. His eyes turned back to his colleague, and he offered a tired smile. "As well as I can be, I suppose. Things are... strained. Better now, but still... not quite right. I do hope you are faring far better than I at the moment."

Of all the people Wesley knew, Michael McHalen was one of few he'd call a friend. He'd thought that he and Charles Montague were getting along well enough, but that relationship had been made somewhat awkward. Both their sons deciding to break custom by dating halfbloods, and their disparate reactions, had made it difficult for Wesley to talk with Charles. Besides, he and Michael had known each other far longer, were family, at least of sorts. His sister had married Michael after his first wife, Michelle's mother, had passed away. After a time, Laurelia had left Michael, much to Wesley's distaste, and run off to some unknown place. He hadn't heard from her since. And didn't particularly care to; she'd left her husband, with their two daughters, and for absolutely no reason. Wesley cared much more for his relationship with Michael than that he had with his sister. Michael was a good man, and a good father; things that, at least recently, Wesley was trying very hard to be.

'Two halves are equal, a cross between two evils

Drusilla's attention, which had previously been flitting back and forth between people-watching and future-gazing (naughty ducky, not supposed to be looking tonight!), was stolen by a familiar voice. She smiled her strange smile, with eyes that seemed to be seeing nothing and everything all at once, as she turned to see her friend Lulu. She noticed the man with her, already recognizing him. "Hello, Lulu darling. Tell me, ducky, am I the only one getting deja vu?" Her expression was genuinely puzzled for a moment, as she couldn't quite shake the feeling that this had happened before... but then, of course it had, in her mind. When Colin introduced himself, her lips moved in sync with his words, her gaze far-off until he finished. Her attention focused once again, this time on him, and his determined gaze, turned towards the food tray. She tilted her head a bit, and laughed, the sound somewhat spooky, like bells being rung by a ghostly wind. "My name is Drusilla. I would very much like a drink... although what to drink? Hm... Yes, that will be fine, I think." She'd spaced again, this time looking to see what she wanted to drink and inadvertently seeing what he would bring her. She stared at him for a moment, then shook her head. "Yes, what you've got on your mind will do just fine." It didn't occur to the Seer that he had no idea what she was talking about. She was past it already, anyway. She might spend a lot of her time watching the future, but the former Ravenclaw rarely lingered too long on the past. "You look quite nice, Lulu. Is that a new dress? Mine's old, I got it from a wardrobe... actually, I've no idea who's dress it was." Having so many memories of things that hadn't happened yet occasionally made it hard to remember things that had. And it didn't really matter who's the dress had been; Drusilla was now the only living Somerset, which made the property and anything inside it hers. She could wear any dress she pleased.

                                                          ═════════════════════════════════
'But if you listen, you learn to hear the difference

I can see, when you stay low nothing happens
Does it feel right?
Late at night, things I thought I put behind me
Haunt my mind
I just know there's no escape
Once it sets its eyes on you
But I won't run, I have to stare it in the eyes
Stand my ground, I won't give in

SIXTH YEAR PREFECT

Marina rolled her brown eyes a little but a blush still crept up in her cheeks for a few moments. "Only a thousand times. You don't look too shabby yourself." she replied in a similarly whispering tone. His arm suddenly wrapped around her shoulders, and she found herself not minding at all. She watched the McHalens, plus Michelle enter. She'd heard that Michelle and her sister were living with Ada's family now, and while she didn't know exactly what had been going on with them and their father to begin with, she got the feeling they were much better off with the Blythes. It was a shame Ada wasn't here tonight. She hadn't seen the small Hufflepuff in ages, everyone being so busy with OWLS the previous year. According to the rumors, she'd gotten some mysterious, older boyfriend. Marina was insanely curious, but determined not to pry. That was Ada's business.

The redhead was shocked to see Gracie's hair such a normal color. She wasn't even sure if brown was the girl's actual hair color. Probably not. She was looking around, probably for Dominic. He didn't seem to be here yet, but when he arrived Marina had no doubt he'd make straight for his girlfriend. The Ravenclaw's dress was a brilliant blue and her eyes almost looked glowing. The observant Slytherin nearly frowned. Had her eyes always been that blue? Maybe she was wearing contacts. Michelle was as cool and calm as always, in white as usual to match her snowy hair. It seemed to be her signature color. Both girls were extremely pale, even paler than Marina, who had freckles to show she'd gotten some sun that hadn't burned her skin. "Hi Michelle, Gracie," she greeted the two amicably. Michelle and her hadn't always gotten along, per say, and she and Gracie had never really had so much as a conversation, but she didn't mind making small talk with her classmates. There were worst people around tonight. The Notts had just entered, for example. She didn't care how influential or wealthy they were. They were trouble.

A hero is one who knows how to hang on just one minute longer

No more denying, I've got to face it
Won't close my eyes and hide the truth inside
If I don't make it, someone else will
Stand my ground
It's all around, getting stronger
Coming closer, into my world
I can feel that it's time for me to face it
Can I take it?

I don't like WALKING around this OLD and EMPTY HOUSE
So HOLD my HAND, I'll WALK with you, my DEAR
The stairs CREAK as I SLEEP, it's KEEPING me AWAKE
It's the HOUSE telling you to CLOSE your EYES
There's an OLD VOICE in my HEAD that's HOLDING me BACK
Well TELL her that I MISS our LITTLE TALKS
SOON it will be OVER and BURIED with our PAST
We used to PLAY OUTSIDE when we were YOUNG and full of LIFE and full of LOVE

Germaine managed not to squeak this time. "You're welcome. It's nice to see you to." At his confession a small, genuine, laugh broke free. She looked a bit surprised herself at how carefree it sounded. "I've been thinking the same thing." Then she gasped. "I mean... Not that I was surprised you were invited, of course. You're a professor!" Oh, she hoped he wasn't offended. "But I'm just the librarian, and I've only been at Hogwarts two years," she continued on, trying desperately to clear up her misstep. "So I didn't really expect an invitation." she explained. Okay, at this point, she really did need a drink. "A drink would be nice, thank you," she said quietly, a small, awkwardly apologetic smile on her face.

Without LIBRARIANS, what do we HAVE? No PAST and no FUTURE.

Chloe sat around staring at ceiling before finally looking around the room. That's when she caught sight of Newlyn and her sisters. Sure they weren't Sun but at least it was someone to talk to. "Since I can't study I'm going to be social with my friends cause I happen to have those." she said getting up from her seat. "Alright dear have fun." her mother called after her.

Skipping off Chloe went and grabbed two drinks before heading over to Newlyn. "Hey I brought drinks." she said with a smile holding out the drink for her. "Your dad's a no show I take it?" Chloe asked. She still hadn't been told about her friend's family but Chloe never pressed the issue. Regardless at least Chloe had a friend in the world.

Landon was glad he could get Germaine to relax. Truthfully did the girl ever laugh? Maybe when you weren’t in the library but that was a mystery because when wasn’t she in the library she was the librarian after all. “Well you have me beat by a year.” He said with a smile. Clearly he wasn’t offended by what she said. Probably because he knew what she meant. “You’re most welcome. Don’t go anywhere and I’ll be right back.” Landon told her before heading off to get them both something to drink.

It seemed to Landon like she could use the drink more than he could be. Coming back shortly after with two drinks in hand Landon held the one out to Germaine. “Here you are.” He planned on enjoying himself instead of being depressed over a job he didn’t have. Why not have some fun for at least one night?

David watched as his sister ran off to go hang with whatever friend she happened to see. His guess would be Newlyn since that was the only friend she had. She did have that Gryffindor but she didn't seem to be around anymore. Looking around David quickly noticed the McHalen twins. "I'm going to go socialize too. No offense but hanging with parents just isn't cool." he said running off.

"Hey Elli, Ver. How are you guys doing?" David asked. He played Quidditch with the two or at least with Elli anyway. Since she was the captain of Gryffindor now he's have treat her like the captain she was he guessed. Ver on the other hand was on the Ravenclaw team with Shayna so he knew her pretty well too at least on the pitch anyways.

                              La Famille Montague

The Montague family arrived with little haste. Their less than elegant departure from their home had left each and every one with a stagnant frown carved upon their lips. The argument, (if it could be called that) had been abruptly sprung by their youngest son, whom, threatened with all the malice of the world that the shame he would proudly smite upon their family would be an eminent possibility. Shocked, Charles, nor Mary-Louise had any inclination as to how to react. But the time had passed for that and so they stood outside of the home in their thicket of silence. The gentle string of melody cast a sweet aroma of elegance and high class. The long, lined walkway they stiffly strode through did ease in a cool, calm, and complacent smile to grace all of their features.

But inside, Charles and Mary-Louise had never felt the wand of blackmail pressed so tightly into the squares of their backs. They greeted the hosts, offered the house elves their coats, and sauntered within to join the rest of the party, whereupon Dominic pointedly departed without a word.

Charles and Mary felt their throats stiffen as they glanced at the crowd. Mary-Louise subtly pointed out each student of interest, and all she’d gathered from her position as a healer for Hogwarts; Charles felt that smile almost twitch. Their eyes roamed past, knowing nothing in their power would stop it. Charles noticed Wesley and a sigh rolled past his lips. It was such a shame really, but the rumors that circulated him, and all that it had meant. They could have been such good friends. And, Mary, almost sensing his disdain, distracted him with a tray lead by the matron house elf and distracted him with the promise of a delightful sweet.

Dominic never bothered to cast a second glance over his shoulder to see if his parents would follow; he knew they wouldn’t. He neared Damien (who was much easier to find without those muggle clothes on) and greeted him. ”Heya mate,” Dominic nodded to Damien and noticed then as he strode closer that he was gathered with Marina, the McHalen twins, and, hells, he should have spotted Michelle a mile away, if he’d have thought to think she’d even be here and then he nodded to each in turn. For a brief moment, he wondered who that was, garbed delicate in the most brilliant shades of blues and complimented with a darker, natural hue of hair. ”Grace?” His smile grew when he spotted those gleaming eyes. ”I was hoping I’d find you here. You look beautiful.” He leaned close for a small kiss on top of her head, his thick arm snaking around her waist…

Hoping, just maybe, to set off his parents as much as he damn well could; and he smirked.

Drusilla... so this was the friend that Lulu was talking about, the seer. Colin had seen a fair share of seers, though none so young and.. well, normal looking as Drusilla. Yet when she addressed him, her words were lost on him. Colin gave Drusilla a somewhat confused, somewhat amused look, almost as if he were trying to figure out what the woman meant when she'd said his drink selection would be fine even though he never suggested anything. Shrugging it off, Colin nudged his sister gently on the side before drifting into the crowd, stalking after the woman with the food. He figured he'd have to find a way to enjoy himself at some point, even if he didn't like these grand social occasions.

"Deja vu?" Lulu repeated in an airy, playful tone before she gently shook her head. "Non, only joy... c'est la joie de vivre, I believe balls were created so we could all celebrate and be happy togezer, in a big group. To bring ze world closer for one night... it's lovely." Lulu's eyes darted around the ballroom, taking in the faces and the outfits - some fashions of the muggle world, some of the wizarding world, but where the clothes came from didn't really matter as everyone looked elegant either way. It was nice to see everyone all dressed up. When asked about her dress, Lulu nodded, giving a little spin. "Oui~ I bought it for ze ball, shopping is so much fun. We must go on a shopping spree togezer one of zese days." The thought of it sent her gears in motion. There was so much time until the next school year, so much they could do. "A sleepover too! 'ow do you say... a girl's night! I 'avent 'ad one of zose in years!"

Watching as both their children ran off to go hang with those they happened to know Mary Jane wondered if they were anything like them at their age. "Were we like that at their age?" she asked her husband. "I know I was can't say about you though." John told her. "I don't think I was not even with OWLs." she told him. That's when something hit her... "You don't suppose Chloe ran off to study do you?" she asked John. After all Mary Jane had said to put her notes away so why wouldn't she run off and study in private. "I don't think so. I trust she's hanging with her friends that came with their parents." he assured her. At least he hoped that she truly was doing so and wasn't turning into David who happened to twist what he said. With that sorted out the two went off to get themselves drinks possibly some snacks along the way after all the food wasn't there just to look at.

Now where did I put that wand?

Grayson entered, his eyes taking everything in as he stood watching the crowd. This was probably his first invite to any social gathering of any kind, well, besides staff meetings and the feasts at the beginning and end of each school year, that he actually even managed to be at. His clothes felt looser than they had in years, but he was still recovering from the curse that had him passed out for a school year. Seriously, how much reading had he missed out on? He didn't know. He however did know, that for whatever reason, he'd been feeling, well... A bit more aware of his surroundings? He wasn't sure why. However, he could make an attempt to be sociable. Maybe, as long he didn't go into a diatribe about the the enactment of the Statute of Secrecy.

He looked around and spotted a fellow professor in this mess. At least he recognized the head Nurse at Hogwarts. Lukas seemed to be greeting people, so the History professor made his way over to his colleague. He smiled a bit, feeling really underdressed for such an occasion when everyone else was dressed in finery.
"Umm, hey Lukas. I got the invite on my desk before I left for the summer break. Nice ball." Oh, this was going so bad, and he was tempted to describe some of the more famous balls he'd read about, but he shut his mouth. "Has Amata come in yet, or am I early? I'd actually be shocked if I was, to be honest."
