Aw, thank you Weather, but I'm not a real expert on Final Fantasy VII. That title should only be granted to the developers and storywriters who made this game. biggrin
Anyways, back to Sephiroth.
Sephiroth is basically everyone's favorite Final Fantasy psychotic mass murderer, probably second only to Kefka, depending on the situation and who you ask. He's the final boss of the game, and comes with some crazy and extremely powerful attacks that can, if you aren't at the right level, be used to wipe the bottom of North Crater with your entire party's a**, and then some. However, as much as I and everyone else love and adore this loony, there are some points I'd like to make.
If one is to argue the greatness of Sephiroth to one who totally and utterly despises them, then one must not talk about how he is worshipped as some sort of sex god by oneself. It is an immediate turn off to any person whom you may be trying to convince of his coolness.
In addition, saying that he is badass, 'specially because of his sword which is just 'oh so uber' is another turn off as well. Yeah, so he's got a long sword that's named after an actual line of blacksmiths and swords in Japan. But guess what? It seems that even before Sephiroth came to be, really big swords were the rage, and almost every RPG hero or villian had one. Each RPG hero and villian would whip out their mail order catalog and order the latest or shiniest model, whichever suited their fancy.
Guess what? The Masamune isn't that special. It's been around since Final Fantasy for the NES in 1987, so just because Sephiroth uses it doesn't make it any more 'special.' It traditionally is, much like the Excalibur, a really powerful sword that can be equipped by at least one character, although in the original Final Fantasy, any character class could utilize the Masamune, even White Mages.
If Rosa from Final Fantasy IV had a Masamune, I'd probably use her more, but that's besides the point. It's not the size of the weapon that matters, it's how you use it.
Which brings us to another point. Sephiroth is just, simply put, amazing on the battlefield. He's helped the Shinra Electric Company win a war, slaying what may be hundreds of people, and that's before he went off the deep end. After finding out the truth of his origins, he started a killing spree that would send today's mass murderers into shame, taking countless lives. When Zack, a first class Soldier much like Sephiroth himself, faced off against him, he was beaten. When the various Soldier's in the Shinra Building go against Sephiroth, they are slain in scant moments, as they stood no chance against Sephiroth.
However, when Cloud fights the same enemies, he too is skilled, even though he *spoiler* was never a member of Soldier in the first place.*/spoiler* While Sephiroth was indeed skilled, much of his abilities, such as his enhanced strength and early development of various skills, were mostly attributed to the Jenova cells and Mako in his body that he'd had since he was a fetus. Without that and the special rigorous training program that he himself went under, he'd be just like any other member of Soldier. If you take away the Jenova cells and Mako, Sephiroth is just an ordinary human, just like Cloud and Zack both were.
The sheer amount of Jenova and Mako in Sephiroth's body is what makes him so powerful, to the point in which Cloud must fight against him with the rest of Avalanche to subdue him. So what if Cloud has to have his buddies help him kill Sephiroth? If YOU were fighting a guy pumped up on some really powerful alien cells and life energy, you might want to have a few buddies with you to watch your back, too.
Tifa and the other characters are skilled in their own right. Tifa is a martial arts expert, Yuffie is probably the most powerful, if not one of the most powerful, ninja in all of Gaia now, and Aerith's origins allow her to be especially potent with materia. Barret, despite his personality and way of going about things, is very good with analytical thinking and leading a group of people, as the brief glimpse into Avalanche at the start of th game showed us. Cid is a master with the spear, and a master of anything with an engine, for that matter. Vincent is an expert gunman and would make a highly skilled assassin. Reeve's ability to design and build Cait Sith shows that he is especially skilled with high levels of mathematics, physics, and engineering in general. Nanaki is able to sense things (through smell, hearing, taste, and whatnot) more efficiently than the others by being what he is; an animal, like a cat or dog. He is also extremely agile and difficult to fight against since his movements differ from a human's drastically.
Well DAMN, I think we've established that all your characters are skilled and oh so special, just like Sephiroth here. 'Cept they aren't as crazy yet.
Not yet, anyways. razz
One thing that struck me about Sephiroth though, is this. The fact that he was insane aside, going around and killing everyone is NOT going to solve your problems. If you don't think that killing people is a problem, then try looking at some actual murder victims who probably died in a similar manner to Sephiroth's victims. Many a time have I come across a fan (not only some Sephiroth fans, this applies to other fans of certain characters as well) who've said "Yeah, [insert character name] kicks a** because he can kill anyone!"
Uh, hello? Killing isn't very cool. I think Vincent's cool, and am amazed with his ability to do what he does, but when I saw an actual picture of a victim's face after it was blown off with a gun, I began to think more on what made me like his character. I still like him, but I like him because he doesn't go killing off people for any insipid reason. Therefore, I do not think Sephiroth is cool because he kills innocent people in the game. In fact, I'm still disturbed that many fans of the characters seem to look over the fact that millions of citizens of Midgar lost their lives because of a miscalculation during a mission performed by Avalanche early in the game.
To think Sephiroth is cool because he kills people is a similar school of thought to killing animals just for fun. I am not talking about hunting, either. Thankfully, though, this is a very scant few Sephiroth fans I'm talking about, but I felt I should touch up on the subject.
However, if you do think like this, then please arrange to see a psychiatrist, as thinking like that could be rather problematic.
Anyways, for me it basically comes down to this. I like ALL the characters of Final Fantasy VII, for whatever reason there may be. Sephiroth is a damn good villian, Cloud has the big sword that lets me dice monsters like carrots, Barret is amusing to me, Vincent intrigues me, and a whole lot of other reasons. I like Sephiroth, since he is definitely a good villian (although definitely not a good person) and IS misunderstood. He didn't choose to be born under the circumstances that he ended up going through, and finding out that much of his life was a lie is a devastating experience (thus him going off the deep end). I do NOT, however, like how he killed Aerith (although that did make for a very touching point in video game history), I did not like how he killed so many people senselessly because he couldn't find a more mature way to solve his problems, and I do NOT like how some of his fans (however, NOT all of them) are so blinded by their adoration of him that whenever someone says something negative about him, even if it's true, they feel the need to bite someone's head off for it.
So yeah. Sephiroth is absolutely fantastic as a villian, as many have said before me. Doesn't mean he's a great person, though, even though it's not entirely his own fault.
It's really sad that he killed anyone who came close enough to him to try to take him to a sanitarium. razz
Oh yes, sorry for the rant. Feel free to disagree with whatever I said above, as you are most definitely entitled to your opinions.
Just don't go name calling, or insulting other people or characters to make Sephiroth look better. It's actually more insulting to Sephiroth if you do something like that.

Shady Lurker Kinda pointless. I've always thought of Sephiroth as a moma's boy, but I want put other people down on their views. Kefka from Final Fantasy III he was a genius. I'll give ya that he was a genius but he was a cross-dresser

Sephy is pretty cool if you ask me. At first I use to think of him as a psychopath until I got far in the game and understood what he was actually trying to accomplish.
