Run watched dubiously as the little limbs - just like those she'd been trying to keep off herself - slid comfortably onto her darling sister's hoof, and said lamely, "who knows where it's been?" Well, she knew it'd been here, and that was enough. It had been living amongst a flood of insect corpses...and it was the most dead-looking alive bug she had ever seen.

She raised her leg to peer closely at the beetle as it reached her knee and stayed there, chittering faintly. Blood-red eyes gleaming in a head like bone, two ashen spots upon a midnight shell. A most morbid little creature. In other words, it was perfect.
"Dearly Departed," she announced, "that is what I shall call it."

She released an "Ah!", an exclamation that contained her incredulity and her horror. Surely Beloved couldn't be trying to keep some sort of freakish insect as a pet! It had probably been feasting on its dead comrades and stepping all over the ooze - there were many times that she could not understand her sister's intentions, but by now she was convinced that she was crazy.
"No!" She insisted, glaring at the offending creature. "My Beloved, baby sister - you should not have some...some bug for a pet! No, you should have a songbird, as pretty as you, a sight to behold, fluttering by your shoulder. I'll find one for you!" She shifted her gaze upwards, baleful. "Or if you really want an insect, I'll catch you a beautiful moth, to compliment your velveteen fur and your loveliness. This horrible little probably cannibalistic awful little bug from this terrible cave doesn't suit you at all!"

An enigmatic smile ghosted over her muzzle at Run's passionate supplication. "On the contrary," she replied, a spectral trace of amusement playing under the cool sigh of her voice, "I think it suits me very well."

Once she saw that look she knew she'd lost - Beloved did whatever she wanted, and Run (and everyone else, for that matter) was generally powerless to stop her. A deep, heaving sigh, and she said: "fine."
She grimaced at the sight of the bizarre bug (was it looking at her?!) and sulkily asked, "will you be picking up any other horrible weird creepy crawlies from the other caves too?" She was not looking forward to crunching through a sea of dead and undead insects.

She had coaxed it onto her shoulder scale. A few slow steps first, then, as it did not fall, regular ones, and she was leading the way out of the cavern. "No. We may leave. I have what I came for."

Run was grateful, at least, to leave the awful place. She whipped her head 'round as a cold wind blew by and whistled down the caves, inciting another shameful shudder for a split second.
"So," she said, "then why did you say all that stuff about psychic echoes for?"

She did not smile again as they reemerged into the sunlight, leaving the screams and laughter that may or may not still ring within the stony walls behind, but her voice was as light as the mourning of wind through still leaves could be as they trotted off, bug firmly attached, back down the familiar paths, away from the darkness where restless ghosts may or may not lie, "For effect, of course. Why else?"

v. Fate The wolf snarled. The buck tensed. Silence stretched and neither backed down. The fight was swift and brutal. Blood was shed on both sides, but the victor pressed his hoof against the exposed throat of his opponent and declared his dominance. Under a watchful moon he showed mercy, and when he slipped away into the darkness, a shadow followed.  *****

vi. Brotherly Bunnies For two creatures that had come seconds close to being eaten and had then been carted five miles by a wolf and an eaglehound, the two bunnies looked remarkably relaxed. The grey one was sitting contently, alternating between grooming itself and its companion, while its partner nibbled patiently at the grass. As Killing Moon waited for Echo to retrieve his brother from the nearby shop, he stared down at the two creatures with a bemused smile. They had been saved from becoming Fate’s dinner only because of their striking colouring. He had nearly stomped on his wolf's head to save them from being devoured. As if catching his leaders thoughts, Fate gave a hungry whine. Killing Moon hushed him gently and continued to admire his find. They really were adorable... especially that grey one.

An increasingly audible cacophony of barks and yips heralded Left's arrival - Icebow, Echo's rather more excitable offspring, was gambolling circles around his mother ahead of the Kin that was sought.
"Oh, shush now, Icebow," Left said - though rather less woebegone than usual, cheered by the prospect of his beloved brother's company, "you needed me, Killing Moon? I dropped a stack of salamanders when Echo came 'cos Icebow here shoved past to get to her, you'd think he never gets to see her or something, the way he - OH."
And that was when he finally caught sight - frozen midstep, jaw dropped, eyes wide - of THE CUTEST CUTEST MOST ANERABLE BEINGS IN THE UNIVERSE.Ruriska ARGHAKLGJLLJHLK TOO CUTE QAQ

At the arrival of the boisterous Icebow and his owner, the bunnies glanced up and then went back to their business, as if they dealt with this sort of nonsense every day. "Do you like them?" Killing Moon asked with a grin, enjoying the expression on his brother's face. "I thought we could both keep one."Having done her job, Echo decided on some motherly bonding by nipping at Icebow's tail feathers.

"Keep one?" he repeatedly faintly, "I can keep one?"
Slowly, he sank to his knees and laid his head down in front of the placid buns, tears welling as he watched their adorable little bunny activities in disbelief.
"They're so cuuuuute, Killing Moon," he was practically blubbering, "they're...so...cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuteeeeeee..."

"Well, of course. As tempting as it is, I couldn't keep both of them."He looked on in amusement as Left sank to the ground, taken down by what Killing Moon could only call a cute overload. The sudden ear-grooming drew a long, high noise out of him that could only be described as unearthly.
"This one...this one looks like you, Killing Moon."
