It took everything Candace had not to scream as Circe was finally pushed--

..Through her?

Her breathing was ragged, panting as she stumbled back away from the weapon that had just run her through without so much as leaving a scratch. A hand pressed against her chest right over her racing heart. Had she ever been that scared before? That terrified?

Why...why did Circe not..

Mission reports? Candace looked up again. People were..writing that about her? Her?! A liability?! What about Rep?! And...and Jerry! They were surely bigger emotional hazards than her! So she had a bad few days! The ******** did they know?! Who the <********> was calling her weak?! She. Wasn't. Weak. She was strong. She was stronger than all of them! Candace wasn't desperate. No. That wasn't..no...she wasn't..

...She was.

She was desperate for approval. She'd always been desperate for approval even before recruitment. Success, power, money. She wanted it all, desperately so. When did it become..more of a hindrance than a motivator? Candace ruffled her own hair, stepping back away from Caelius. How dare he. How ******** dare he lecture her like he knew anything about her.

Candace refused to accept it. She wasn't weak, she wasn't pathetic, pitiful, a liability a hazard.

She was Candace ******** Pennington.

Something slammed into her just as she made a move to shove past Caelius, to catch up to her leader, and instead she was sent flying into the fog. She groaned, rolling onto her back and getting up onto shaky feet. "CAELIUS!" She shouted, fully expecting that had been him to have shoved her. But it wasn't. Caelius was gone. She had no idea where Aria was.

She was alone. Alone in the nest with the Insanity-tainted townspeople.

You're not alone, my dearest~. Atropos purred calmly in Candace's head. You'll always have me. Use me. You're the only one who can, you know.

"..from your peers.." They thought she was weak. "a liability, an emotional hazard.." She wasn't...no. "..desperate. Know your rightful place,"

Her eyes narrowed. No. No, she was not just fodder. She was not weak. The villager who had hit her before came at her again and she ducked underneath his swing, much as she had when Clarice had attacked her in their spar. "but have a little more situational awareness in the future, yeah?" Right. Yes. She knocked him down before he could hit her in the head as Raeg had. It didn't hurt him, it didn't even daze him. Sure, he fell, but he was already working on getting up.

She had to fight. She couldn't just throw them around. She needed Atropos.

It was her or the man.

Weakness or strength.

Atropos' rings glowed, summoning the weapon to her feet as she jumped and kicked his side. She used the side of her blade for now, not wanting to cut him. He stumbled, swinging his weapon at her and slamming it into her side. She winced, jumping back away from him. He lumbered toward her..

He carelessly threw his weapon at her and Candace smacked it away, rubbing her arm after. ********. She couldn't do it. She had to incapacitate him. One man for a whole ******** Caelius. Abandoning her like this.

She hoped he died.

She threw herself back away from the man as he came at her, catching herself on her hands and kicking her feet up. This was something she did all the time. Something she used during spars, during battles. A pair of slashes to the front, that's all it was.

Candace hadn't anticipated he'd leap at her. One of Atropos' talons caught in his chest, the other through the underside of his jaw. He came with her as she flipped. Candace fell to the ground with the man connected to her boots, pulling them free with a sickening squelch. She gagged, stumbling away from him.

Is he dead..?

Don't think about it.

B-but Atropos he's just a--

Don't. Think about it. Keep moving. Candace coughed, nodding and checking her scanner for the dot to find what direction to go in.

She ran. She needed to catch up, to prove to them she wasn't just a weak, useless trainee.

Something cut her arm as she ran and Candace hissed, jumping back away from her newest attacker. Damnit! Candace didn't hesitate this time, putting her weight into the ball of her foot and pushing herself to spin. A leg kicked out, bladed edge catching the woman's hip.

A necessary evil, she told herself. Candace had to do what needed to be done to survive.

Candace came around again. The knife cutting her shin as she threw herself at the woman. She kicked her to the ground, landing with both feet on the woman's abdomen. She heard a distinct crack under her foot and Candace winced. The body beneath her feet slowly stopped moving.

...Please just be unconscious.

Slowly she moved off the woman, backing away. Keep going, Candace. Get back to the leaders.

She turned and ran again.

A figure flew from the shadows and she ducked, watching it sail over her. Cursing to herself, she kept running. Candace jumped out of the way of figures that tried to grab at her. One of them grasped her scarf and she let out a gasping cry as it closed around her throat, squeezing it. Her hands flew up to pull it away, coughing and spinning to free herself from the article of clothing. It was just a scarf. She could get a new one.

There was a wall of people in her way, each one wielding a weapon. She rubbed her lips together, looking all around for a way out. She was surrounded.

s**t.

Atropos' gems glowed brighter as she threw herself at a man only to be grabbed by the ankle and thrown. She landed on her back with a surprised shout, wincing and rubbing at her back as she got up. Don't stop. Keep moving.

She heard the footsteps from behind her and dropped to the ground, a leg kicking out and slashing at a man's leg with Atropos' blade. The man fell to the ground, blood pouring from the back of his knee as he started to turn and crawl at Candace. Something hit her from behind and she winced, rubbing her shoulder.

Candace jumped. She was going to literally kick him while he was down. Atropos' blade embedded itself into the man's back. Candace heard a crack as she did, felt the resistance of something very hard.

..It was his spine.

The man immediately collapsed to the ground and Candace backed away, hands covering her mouth as she gagged. Oh god. What had she done?! The others she could convince herself she'd simply knocked unconscious...that man was dead.

Oh god!

Blood dripped from Atropos' blade and she grimaced. Keep going, Candace. Don't look back.

A woman got in her way as Candace ran. She slowly turned to face her, a broken bottle in her hand. As Candace grabbed her arm she slashed at the trainee, and though it made her wince she forced herself to ignore it. She gripped the woman's arm and kept running, suddenly turning her heel and literally using the woman as a weapon.

The woman was thrown at a man, effectively knocking both of them down and to the ground in a pile of flailing limbs and grunts.

Candace kept turning until she was facing the direction she needed to be in. Find Aria. Find Caelius. Find Aria.

There was a low rumble that shook the ground beneath Candace, the movement building and erupting into a piercing shriek. Some of the villagers in the pit swayed before falling to the ground. Others continued their relentless shamble forward, claw-like hands and weapons reaching forward towards the trainee.

One of the villagers hefted an axe and was about to bring it down upon Candace when an arrow seemed to suddenly sprout from the middle of their forehead. The bloodless eyes crossed, trying to look at the shaft before the being toppled backwards. Something fell around Candace, tightening with a jerk that pinned her arms to her sides. Before the trainee could even yelp she was jerked upwards, swiftly rising up and out of the pit.

Hands grabbed her and hoisted her up, pulling the runic rope off of her. "Whoah there, cowboy. Stop rustling her jimmies." A hunter with blonde hair joked weakly, her hunter coat smeared in a dark, repulsive color. She was leaning on a large bow, using the weapon to support her weight and keep it off of a leg.

Another hunter was coiling the runic rope with one hand, the other arm hanging awkwardly against his chest in a sling comprised of scraps made from his hunter coat. "Hey, at least my throwing arm was still intact. Nick was considerate in that regard."

"Oi, I'd hate to interrupt the party," Aria remarked as she stepped forward. Half of her side was covered in a dark substance, her pristine coat splattered. "But we should work to get out of here. Let's split into two groups: they seem to be attracted to Fear, and --" she raised her weapon, moving forward to create a barrier between the group and the fog. She struck out with a foot, catching a former villager in the gut and sending them to the ground. "The longer we linger, the more that'll show up. Splitting up will divert their attention. Draven?"

The hunter with the broken arm looked up as his name was called. "You lead the first group up thirteenth," Aria instructed as she tossed him her scanner. "Take Kornel, Judy, Corwin, Anita, and Eli. The rest of you are with me. Candace?"

Aria turned her attention to the trainee. "You can go with Draven's group, or with mine. Draven's group could use the extra hand, whereas mine will be taking the long route and draw attention away from them. As a hunter, you're going to be faced with options like this. Choose wisely. It looks like you had a rough time as well."

THE OOC

Decisions time! Choose to go with Draven or Aria.

The ground shook and Candace stumbled, hitting the wall of the pit.

Oh god. No.

She looked up, biting down on her lip and then turning around with her back to the wall. ********. She was stuck. Could she climb out without them pulling her back in and--suddenly an arrow was sticking out of the forehead of her would-be attacker. Candace slumped against the wall, eyes wide and heart racing so wildly it felt like it was going to burst from her chest. Where had that arrow come from? Aria didn't have a bow. Caelius didn't have a bow, and she doubted he'd come to her rescue anyway. Who..?

Candace pushed off the wall and looked up. Something fell her way and grabbed her. She was pulled up and she yelped, struggling against the rope until she realized it was glowing. Those were runes! Oh thank god! Runes! This was a hunter! She sighed with relief, not even fighting it as a set of hands pulled her up and out of the pit. Candace gave a weak laugh when she heard the joke. "My jimmies are fine~. Thank you for the help out." She looked up, looking over everyone around her. She didn't know any of these faces. But their coats, their weapons; this was the team of missing hunters. Thank god.

At Aria's voice her eyes widened and she scrambled to her feet. Finally! She was with her proper leader. A quick glance around showed no sign of Caelius.

...No. There was no way he actually..no. He had to just...be somewhere. Doing something. Being Caelius. That was it.

Draven? Candace looked to see who answered. Oh, the one who had pulled her up? Kornel, Judy..she'd never heard of any of these hunters. This was definitely the team they'd been here to find. She was so glad there didn't seem to be any weapons tablets that needed to be returned to Deus. When her name was called she looked up, waiting for her order.

A choice.. "Yeah, just a bit of a rough patch. Nothing I couldn't handle." She said with a bit of a laugh, looking from Aria to Draven and back again. With Aria she'd be safe, but if she was drawing attention away from Draven's group that meant she'd be taking the more dangerous route. She rubbed her lips together, looking unsure. She wasn't feeling too great. She shouldn't push her limits. "I'll stick with Draven's group."

Aria nodded, relieved at Candace's choice. "Good. We'll be off. Guys? Let's cause a ruckus. The more attention we attract, the better. Send up a flair when you guys are out."

"Got it," Draven saluted Aria back before he pulled himself to his feet, nodding towards Candace. "Nice to meet you. I'm Draven, Death division. Go ahead and take point. You're in the best shape at the moment. Come on, team."

The "team" in question seemed to consist of both Death and Mist hunters. One of the hunters was currently leaning heavily on another, favoring her leg. Her leg was held up and off the ground, a glowing weapon tied to it by means of a bandage. Said bandage appears to have been made from a hunter's coat. It was difficult to tell who belonged to which division. Every hunter's coat was covered in filth and cut down into strips to the point where some of them wasn't wearing anything at all. Even their scarves were put to use as bandages.

Draven hefted the rope until it hung off of his shoulder, his own weapon unsummoned. "Here, hang on a second." Draven reached into his coat pocket, wincing as his broken arm was jostled. "Here. Use this. It's a runic patch -- pop it on your weapon and your Fear shield will be recharged." He tossed a patch towards Candace. It was a square sheet of an unknown material with a glowing rune on it. When pressed against Atropos, the rune would flash before Atropos' Fear shield would recharge.

"There. Let's go."

Quote:

Draven's group consists of the hunters that are injured the most. As such, they aren't very fast... and considering what's surrounding them and attempting to kill them, it's going to be tricky. Moreso considering the fog is still up. Who knows how long it will take them to escape?

To escape, roll 2d20. The first dice will be the "event" you encounter. The second dice is the target the event affects. You need to reach a movement total of 15 to escape.

First dice: Event

  • 1-3: Nothing comes out of the fog. +3 movement.
  • 4-7: A villager lunges out! Target takes -3 damage. +1 movement.
  • 8-10: Two villagers lunge out of the fog! Target takes -5 damage. No movement.
  • 11-14: Nothing happens. +2 movement.
  • 15: One of the hunters lags behind. Stop and rest. No movement forward.
  • 16-19: A mob of villagers shamble out of the fog. Target takes -7 damage. No movement forward.
  • 20: A villager manages to grab the hunter and drag them into the fog! This character is now missing. You can choose to go look for a hunter in an attempt to reclaim them. To do so, roll five 10-sided dice. You need to roll at least three positive numbers to recover them. Three odd? You can't find them, and are forced to abandon them.

Special: Draven can intercept a villager's attack and act as a living shield for a teammate. He can only do this three times before the pain from his injury prevents him. He is, after all, only a Death hunter.

Second dice: Target

  • 1-3: Draven
  • 4-5: Kornel
  • 6-11: Judy
  • 12-14: Corwin
  • 15-17: Anita
  • 18-19: Eli
  • 20: Candace

"Yes, ma'am!" Candace grinned, feeling better now. She watched Aria leave before turning back to Draven, nodding to him. "Likewise, and no problem. I can do that." She'd done it before..with trainees. Trainees that were in better shape, usually in top condition. This was going to be a lot different. She watched Aria leave, frowning. Come back safely. She liked having her leader alive.

She looked over each and every hunter on her new team, taking note of who had what injuries. A broken leg, a broken arm, bloodied coats everywhere, scarf bandaging, just all in all a beat up team. She was indeed very lucky. Her and Draven both despite how low her shield was. Candace smiled, about to say she was ready until Draven told her to hang on. She blinked, holding her hand out for the patch. "Careful of your arm...a patch?" She lifted her foot, grimacing at the blood that stained Atropos' blade. The creatures of Halloween didn't bleed like the people in that pit had. She shook her head and pulled a sleeve down over her hand, using it to wipe blood off the blade so she could apply the patch. Atropos purred, her gems glowing brightly.

Better?

Oh, yes~. Much. She was still charged as well. Candace could tell from the way she would flare a brighter light with each movement. When Candace stood straight again she flashed Draven a grateful smile.

"Thanks, that feels a lot better." Candace did as instructed, taking the lead.

Her first few steps were slow and cautious, both to make sure she didn't lose her team as well as to not just throw herself and them into danger. So far so good. Candace sighed quietly and gestured for them to follow her, trying to keep them hurried without straining the injured hunters.

Candace was beginning to wonder how a hoard of slow-moving targets was able to get the drop on her. Seriously? She jumped back away from one as it tried to hit her, about ready to strike at the townsperson trying to get at her until Draven suddenly appeared in front of her. He took the brunt of their attack with his good arm, shoving them away. "Keep going!"
