He gave her a Look.
"This is not a sunburn," said Mengyao indignantly, brushing a hand over his face - which felt very warm indeed. "It's my natural skin color that just happens to be a bit...darker than normal."
He couldn't quite figure out why Lifen was being so...casual about this. He knew it was just a minipet that had crawled into her dress, but then she had mentioned the two boys that she had met and for some reason it irritated him.
As she drew her hand away from the fan, his hand reached out and grabbed hers, holding it in place. A small scowl had taken place on his lips at the grin on her face, the fan lowered in Mengyao's fingers.
"Just...be careful, all right?" he said, and then sighed, letting go of her hand, moving the fan against his face again.
"Though better a minipet in your chest than one of the boys."

As his hand snapped hers up, her eyebrows raised and eyes locked with his, conveying a sense of confusion. Instinctively, her lips pursed a little, trying to look a little helpless - it usually worked. Hearing his statements though, she immediately softened, almost playing a game wih him, grabbing his hand while it was straying back to him and placed it palm down in hers, petting the greying hand with her free hand.
"You have no worries, I don't intend to allow anyone to take advantage of me, okay?" She offered to him, trying to soothe his worries a little. "I've survived this long, right?" It was an innocent question.
"I'm sure you would have been to my rescue if it was any other way." This statement was made in jest, eyes flicking up to him again.

He felt cool fingers take his, drawing them down as one of Lifen's hands covered his own. Mengyao's gaze moved down to the grey that spread across his skin and his lips thinned, a flicker of frustration passing just briefly over his face.
"I know you are strong," he murmured, and for a second his fingers slipped through hers, interlocking them tightly together. He was not looking at her, but instead at the difference in sizes of their hands. Lifen's were so small compared to his own; small and pale, unmarred by the grey on his own. "That is partially why I worry."
But then he let go and stood, sweeping his hand down the front of his robes as he smoothed out the wrinkles. It would not do to show this sort of weakness in front of her, Mengyao decided, as he tucked his hands into his sleeves, out of sight.
He could not afford to show that weakness - even to her. Mengyao turned his head, offering Lifen a serene smile.
"I will always come to your rescue, remember?" he said lightly.

Watching grey fingers interlock with her own, it made it very real that the little Mengyao she had befriended as a child had grown much larger than her, his hand almost twice the size of her own, grey on pale. A soft smile allowed it self on her face as she listened to him - a protective stance in his words.
After the words, though, he was standing, the same serene and straight-faced Mengyao that she had grown up next to, trying to straighten his robes and getting back in to his jive - probably to go off and give Yuzhi her gift.
Grabbing her shoes and slipping her feet back in to them before standing next to him (and his collarbone), she worked the folds of her own kimino bottom, before looking up to him, keeping the previous smile.
"You'll always be there for me, and I know it. I guess you're my knight-in-shiny-armour, hm?" she offered up, cocking her head to the side momentarily before closing the gap between them and grabbing his collars, pulling him down to her level and grabbing his face between her pale hands, giving him a small kiss on the forehead. Revenge for the last two he had given her.
"Keep me informed about how everything works out for Yuzhi, okay?" She murmured before letting go and looking around. "I guess I have work to do. I'll see you later?"

It had been years since he had first met Lifen - how many he could not say, but enough that Mengyao had grown to be more fond of her than he intended to. She was, after all, the only person that he was himself with, and sometimes that worried him.
But sometimes it made him relieved.
"Knight, yes," said Mengyao, and smirked down at Lifen - she was so tiny, barely reaching his shoulders. "But the shining armor might have to be changed out, since I would imagine wearing armor to be quite tedious and much too heavy..."
He trailed off, trying to figure out what she was doing when her hands grabbed first the front of his robes, and then either side of his face. But an amused smile crossed his face as he felt her lips touched his forehead.
Payback, hmm? he thought, straightening and looking down at Lifen. "I will definitely see you later," he told her, and reached out, patting her head affectionately - and somewhat obnoxiously on purpose. Grinning, he added,
"Later, dearest."
