"Oh nonono.." Bix found a corrividus leaping out into his face as he opened the next minipet cage. He batted it, wrestled it, and finally clamped it under his arm and forced it to eat. "That means you ARE the ring bearer and you WILL be wearing a gimli beard."

Gale merely arched an eyebrow.
"If you think I'm wearing a beard, you are sadly, sadly mistaken. And quite possibly a little delusional, Legolas."

"Ok then you better start growing one. I figured by the future imaginary date of my marriage you will have a nice beard grown in." He patted the baby smooth face of Gale. He'd never seen him with stubble... did he grow facial hair?

"Ow," said Gale, and batted Bix's hand away from his face, rubbing at his cheek. "I have no intention of either wearing or growing a beard. Now, if you had one, I imagine you'd look suspiciously like Santa Claus..."

"Been there. Done that." Bix laughed a little, remembering Christmas, and then immediately sagged.. remembering Julie. He got quiet and turned back to the minis. Awkward silence.

The awkward silence confused Gale, but he said nothing for a minute, and then said quietly,
"I am happy for you, Bix. Really. Molly's great."

"Thanks.." Bix didn't turn around, continuing to feed the slime blob that now slurped over his sneaker. "Sorry I just thought of Julie and Christmas..." He dragged off again. "It's pretty upsetting. I know she and I were like.. a joke thing. Or whatever. But she was fun and we actually did go on a real date once. I just can't.." His voice trembled, refusing to show his watery eyes to the other boy. People died all the time, sure. But they didn't all get turned into horrifically graphic meat puppets who you had to fight. The memories sometimes were a bit much.

"I'm sorry," said Gale, feeling his heart constrict. He hadn't meant for the conversation to shift so fast, but now he felt horrible about even bringing it up. Quietly he stepped up to Bix and reached out a hand. He hesitated for a moment, pulled back briefly, but then let his hand rest on the older boy's shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Bix."

"No it's alright.." Bix sniffed, still hidden under his bangs, then lifted his head and canted it back while he blinked a lot and swiped at his eyes like nothing happened. "We're supposed to get used to this stuff right? Life expectancy and everything. We signed up, willingly." He finally turned to face the younger hunter, his eyes rimmed very obviously red, and cracked as much of a smile as he could muster. "Thanks though. I know I didn't give you a choice but to listen but thanks anyway."

"Just because we're supposed to be 'used to it' doesn't mean it'll be any easier each time," said Gale quietly, dropping his hand from Bix's shoulder and pressing his lips together. "Willing doesn't always mean wanting, despite the fact that they're very similar in terms of definitions."
Exhaling slowly, Gale's eyes flickered back up towards his friend.
"I'll listen anytime, you know," he said, sliding his hands into his pockets. "You were the first person on this island to treat me like an adult. I owe you for that."

"Age doesn't matter." Thankfully the young men had covered most of the cages as they talked and now Bix was just cuddling something that looked like a ball of fluff with eyes. He didn't know what it was, it could be the immature form of something, but it was cute and fluffy and he was feeling better already. "You're here because you wanted to be and you deserve to be. I'd take you over most of the spazz cases out there." Bix didn't want to point out the 'adults' who seemed barely capable of keeping themselves together. "You don't owe me either. We are friends.. we are bros. I.. I like having a younger brother. I'm comfortable with that role." He turned a little pink at the admission.

Gale wasn't entirely certain what the thing in Bix's arms was, but it looked sort of...fluffy. Like a living pompom.
"I do," he said, and his voice was stronger than he had expected it to be, firm as he slid his hands into his pockets and looked at Bix straight on, unwavering in his decisions.
"I do owe you," he said again. "You treated me with respect and dignity even when no one else did. That's good enough for me. I'll repay my debt somehow, someday, but this is my pride."
His voice softened a little. "You're a good man, Bix. I...hope one day to...be like you, you know."
A slight pause.
"...except maybe less flirty."

Bix seemed to brighten slowly after he'd gotten out his feels. The fuzzy monster in his arms got placed back into a cage and Gale was given a nice clap on the shoulder. "You could use a bit of flirty.. and I could use a bit of british. Plus you could never pull off this rockin complexion." He gave Gale a wry grin. "Chicks dig british man. 'ello Gale ol' chum!" Bix sounded like the chimney sweep from Mary Poppins. "Eh? Yeah?"
