“He’ll want a good reason why I only got one small kill.” He murmured. “Zachariah Bantock.” He replied and glanced upward through the branches a little on edge himself. He’d spent far longer out than he had intended for true. “We’ll go faster if you ride.” He said trying to keep the nerves out of his voice. “If you hold on you’ll not likely fall off, and if you are worried about the… reputation you can dismount when we’re closer to the edge of the forest alright?”

He didn’t expect the hunter to know his house name, or what he did for a living. It seemed rather unlikely that he played stringed instruments.

There was a breath, a moment's pause -- and then Ever sighed it out again, catching the Longharn's neck to drag him to a halt and hauling himself up behind Zac. So, no, he wasn't that terrible of a rider, if he could jump up onto the beast like that. Or maybe it was just that years of climbing and curling up in trees had taken their toll...

He settled in carefully, a hand very light on Zac's hip and attention flashing away to the forest around them. "Before we clear the trees, we'll stop. For now, kick your monster into motion."

He bit back the sharp edged question of wondering if the man’s reputation was that of a liar. The way he bounded onto the beast certainly raised the question but he wasn’t ready to start a fight just at the moment. The sky growing dim through the cris-cross of branches made his skin crawl.

“Hold tight then.” He said firmly, no desire to loose the man for having him fall off the hind end of the beast. Likely he’d be taken for a tumble with the taller man if he did fall. He dug his boot heels into the beats shaggy haunches and it jumped forward, a popping motion and cantered forward stretching out its three toes to claw at the snow underfoot with each arching step. It was one of the reasons that those who could afford them craved the lochear, the creatures ran with a smoother loping gate.

The only problem was that there was a great fallen tree that he’d crossed over before on his way into the forest. He leaned forward, risking a good buck from the animal but trying to make sure that Ever stayed on when it performed its lurching leap, kicking out its back feet as a matter of instinct to defend against any would be predators weather they were hot on its heels or not.

As it was, Ever was only barely managing to cling on -- and as the beast moved to jump, his hands scrambled at Zac's hips, no longer thinking about the potential for misunderstanding or frustration, of what people might say. He was just trying to keep his seat, sliding slightly backwards, slowly. The sound he made was less than manly as he scrambled to keep hold --

and tumbled free, only grateful that he managed to roll with his landing, to shed his bow as he went instead of landing on it. Getting a new one made would be expensive enough to set him back more than one bhar hide, and would lay him flat for a while. As it was, he'd end up with scratches and bruises, be left sprawled in the snow with the breath knocked out of him and Thunder spiraling uncertainly above.

Young Lord Bantock, for better or worse kept his seat, but wheeled the beast around in some alarm the second he realized he’d lost his passenger. “Are you alright?” He demanded, dismounting and leading his mount back so that neither it nor the hunter would be spooked. “Sorry about that, I didn’t think that the jump would throw you!”

He hesitated trying not to laugh; it was hard given the man looked like a snowball, cruel though. He offered a hand to help him up trying to suppress the all to easy urge to chuckle at the misfortune of another. “I don’t remember any more like that between here and the forest edge if you’re alright trying to ride again?” He asked cautiously. Lord only knew he didn’t want to find out that the man had twisted an ankle or worse.

For a moment, it seemed damage had been done: Ever just stared up at him, settled on his back, bow a good eight feet away and his furs wet, clinging against his side. He licked his lip, caught a taste of blood, and grimaced -- finally easing up to sit and then, slowly, wrapping both of his hands in around Zac's. This could have been worse...

Except that he was still wobbly, his teeth jarred, clinging to Zac's hand as his eyes scanned for his bow. Undamaged but out of reach, he turned in place and couldn't for the life of him find it. Swallowed three times, working his mouth, gloved hand against a bloodied nose...

No words came out. Too stunned by the tumble.

He gave a quiet curse at the sight of the bloodied nose, even if it was for just a moment. “You should put some, some snow on that.” He said blinking and hesitating as the man continued to hold onto him even after he stood. Had he struck his head on the way down? Bother, by the black wood that would be a bad thing to have to deal with when they already courted darkness.

“Are, are you alright? What are you… Oh your bow?” He asked trying to get some kind of answer out of the man, but at the same time trying to grasp the whole of the situation before he had to find out if the man had a concussion or not. Please by the spirits let him not have hit a rock or log under the soft seeming snow.

"...get that..." It came out mumbled, Ever's eyes on the blood for a moment -- and then he stumbled back to a crouch to take up several handfuls of snow and press them against his face, taking Zac's advice. It was sound. The bleeding wasn't bad so much as it was surprising, not pouring out of him, not swelling up too terribly...

"Bow's worth more than I am." He settled and sighed, closing his eyes for a count of ten. "...I think I punched myself in the face."

Zac handed you the reigns to the beast for a moment so that he could retrieve the bow without it electing to drool on him, step on his foot, or try and eat either bow or the cape. He held it carefully as he returned though he did give it a glance over to see the quality of it.

“Might have been my shoulder.” He said uncertainly. “New riders sometimes break their noses on the beasts neck when it jumps, jerked forward when they aren’t expecting it.”

It didn’t sound, or look as though he’d been so unfortunate in his lessons. Though likely he’d been taught to ride at a very early age.

He must have been alright enough because, behind the snow, he looked up at Zac at that statement, fighting down a rude comment. Struggling against it. His eyes almost mournful as he finally bit it down. It was almost physically painful not to comment on new riders and --

He closed his eyes and made a little sound. Most of him still wanted a ride home. Ten seconds and he could stand up, still clutching at snow, blood along the hem of his tunic. He didn't seem to notice it. "...warn me, next time. Not too much farther?"

He offered reigns over for his bow back.

“I’ll try.” He said and took the reigns back before offering the bow again. “Like I said, I think that was the only one unless there is fresh fall.” He offered a hand up
“You sure you’re going to be alright?”

That could, of course have meant anything from ‘are you alright’ to ‘for the love of god please don’t bleed on the coat’, but he did seem sincere.

Ever took it more to mean the latter than the former, hauling him up to stand and only wobbling a little bit, this time.

His tone was nasal, snow still pressed to his face, as his eyes drank in Zac's clothing and the beast behind him. This disguised his attitude, some, made it harder to tell if he was being snide when he asked, "Do you carry a cloth?"

Some of the richer Artisans did, he knew, patting delicately at their faces or mouths after eating, quietly coughing into the material, sometimes fluttering it stupidly around their cheeks. Perhaps it was more the nobles who did the latter...

“No, I’m afraid not.” He shook his head, though he did rather want to roll his eyes half out of his head when some of the masked nobles fluttered the clothes like a small blizzard in front of their faces as though the presence of ‘lower’ classes were deeply offensive to them on a deep and personal level.

“Just, tell me if you need to stop again, I won’t give him so much lead this time, so we’ll be slower but I think you’ll be less likely to tumble.” He said and turned the beast back towards town.

“Ready?” he asked and waited for something, even a small nod before kicking the beast into motion again.

Zac was going to get blood on his cloak. This time, Ever couldn't quite bring himself to play distant, instead clinging to Zac more thoroughly and all but resting his forehead on one fur-heavy shoulder. The creature's gait was in no way lulling, now, not reassuring, instead sent bolts through his head. He was likely to forget, even, to tumble off the beast once they were within sight of civilization. Zac would have to nudge him into focus.
