"Yeah, well." Clerise thought back to their first spar-- after she'd goaded him in the gym, and then kicking his a** in a spar. He didn't pull punches-- ever.
She wasn't sure if he even knew how.
"Isn't it nicer when you know people have your back?" Clerise asked, cocking her head.
How much things had changed in a few short months. Rep used to fight the world like a wounded, cornered animal-- always lashing out, protecting himself in any way possible, shirking back from anything and everything.
He hated everything, everyone, and was out to serve himself in every way, allies be damned.
"Hah. I admit, I..." She fiddled with her hands, picking at her nails. "I hung back. Surviving right now, for me," Clerise cast suspicious glances around, lips pursed. "Well, it means being a little bit of a coward."
Slipping a hand into her coat pocket, coarse fingertips reached for Balthazar, clutching him.
"I think I need to go find Clarice, later, once she's less busy."
To say goodbye.

Sasha was jolted into wakefulness thanks to her own raucous snore. It was something that happened often; the young woman had always been an incredibly heavy sleeper. Her mp3 player was still playing, and Sasha paused to turn it off. She was alone but didn't worry about where Jerry might've gotten off to. She didn't need a keeper and neither did Jerry.
Rubbing at her eyes, Sasha rose to her feet. She looped the earbuds under the ratty braid she'd twisted her hair into. The sand was making her scalp itch and she couldn't help but wonder if there was some sort of set-up for bathing, or even moist towelettes she could use to wipe her face clean.
In a daze, Sasha stumbled out of the rest area. Maybe after she could clean up she'd come back for some food and hot tea.

He had to nod. "Yeah. I mean. Back home there was always someone watching your back, it was all about the gang, the group, you know? So coming here was ******** rough. But at least now I know there's some people here who /do/ have my back. Though of course there's some ******** people on the island who I'd still shove under a train but just not on a mission."
He grinned toothily.
At her admission he shrugged. "Nothing wrong with that sis. You survive whatever the cost, pride be ******** damned for now. You can die like a hero once we get him fixed somehow. And we ******** will right?" it felt good to be optimistic again, he was tired of cowering and waiting to die. Though his body was tired, he felt more mentally relaxed by the fights, by the thrill of survival than he had in years.
Reaching over, he patted her on the shoulder. "I ******** owe you by the way for." he looked around edgily at the sleepers "The advice in the desert and s**t. Helped me get my head on straight. In the meantime though I'm willing to up what I owe you." his smirk broadened cockily, despite his uncertainty, still keeping his voice low. "If you'll give me a ******** hug ya daft git. Because seriously man, you just look like you could do with one. And so could I to be ******** honest." And with Clerise, he didn't give a s**t.

"Yeah. I was used to my other trapeze artists having my back--literally-- and the rest of the troupe...we were kind of all a ragtag band, so it was a very tight knit circle."
She tapped her chin. "You know, that's probably a good way to off us. Bullets and poison probably wouldn't be nearly efficient enough.
When Rep called her sis, Clerise couldn't help but be touched. Despite it probably just being slang-- well. She'd been an only child, and it was sometimes a lonely existence.
Her new family at Deus was way better than her real one.
Upon his insistence that Balthazar would get fixed-- Well. His optimism was almost uncharacteristic, and that made Clerise appreciate it that much more. "Hah. Yeah, okay. I've got pride to spare anyway, right?"
A toothy grin right back at him. With his uneasy admission, Clerise just nodded, once-- and ******** it, she also wanted a hug. Without any warning, Clerise yanked him off the cot by the arm, wrapping her other arm around Rep's shoulder. Burying her face against his shoulder, Clerise squeezed him tight, exhaling heavily.
"I figured myself out in high school without the threat of death and s**t. Can't imagine doing it now when things are more complicated than what tonight's math homework is."
Human contact was something Clerise thrived on-- so she was content to sit there with him, everyone else be damned.

He made a startled little sound of surprise as he was hauled off the cot, but returning the hug firmly. He'd known he needed it but he hadn't realised how ******** /much/ he had, the relief and gratefulness he felt almost overwhelming. He always felt trapped behind his own walls, needing closeness but terrified of it. Right now with death snapping at their heels, he could forget pride for a while. He rested his chin on her shoulder in an affectionate subtle gesture.
"Thanks. And yeah. s**t's rediculously ******** complicated. We are on good terms, I'm doing nothing else right now, I can't be arsed being told to leave people alone or whatever. Things are good for the time being, let them stay that way." He gave a very contented little sigh and patted her back.
"You've got a lot of s**t to deal with too. You are a strong ******** girl. One of the strongest I've ever met. This s**t won't break you either, I know it right?" he reluctantly slipped back out of the hug, giving her a proper grin.
"We can't die anyway, we've not had any proper ******** leave yet. That'd just be criminal."

She relaxed into the embrace, glad for it beyond words. "You owe me a story later," Clerise said lowly. "Possibly many stories, if you guys end up..."
The redhead pulled back to give Rep a part two showing of frotting, an illustrated finger demonstration.
But with three fingers, this time.
"Yeah. Things are...okay, all things considered."
Despite the fact that Julie and the whole Sahara base was dead-- they weren't. She would count her blessings-- the people she cared about were alive-- Clerise had seen Clarice, Rep, Sasha-- there were a few missing that she wanted to go find, but...
"Coming from you, I don't know how much that means," Clerise teased, poking him in the ribs, letting him slip away. Her tone was pleasant, her mood elevated.
"No ******** kidding-- If I don't get another night out with meximarts, I will haunt Caelius' a**," Clerise grumped, arms crossed.
"You're strong too, you know. You really need some time to ******** let yourself heal though. Jesus, dude. Take it easy, all right?" She inspected where she knew wounds were, eyes sweeping over his bites.
Clerise felt like mothering, so goddamnit, she was going to.

His eyes went wide and the usual creeping blush invaded his features, even despite the sunburn. There were places he hadn't even thought it was possible for his mind to go. But nope, it went there alright. He waved the gesture away. "Don't do thaat." he practically pleaded.
He did submit to inspection though, looking almost guilty. "Yeah I know. I blame being upset, that sort of way where you just want to run yourself through a grinder so you don't have to /feel/ anything." he did add "Was amazing though, I mean..ignoring..the losses." which he was trying very hard not to dwell on "Actually getting to fight alongside the moons and stuff like a proper sun." just a little bit of his enthusiasm shone through in the grin he gave her.
"But yeah there's like. A lot to live for. So nah, I'll die another day. I just need to rest up right now, but good luck with that. I wish there were sleeping pills or something."

"Don't do what, I doon'tt know what you're talking about~" she purred with a grin.
He passed her inspection-- for now, anyway. No open bleeding and no broken bones, at least. "Yeaahh. Well." She pointed a finger at him, narrowing her eyes. "You have people to come back to, now. Don't get turned into ground beef."
Done with her lecture, she nodded, hopping up off the bed, and tossed him one of the MREs she'd swiped: Spaghetti and Meatballs. "Eat something, it'll settle your stomach. I need to go track down miss lady again."
Clerise couldn't resist ruffling his hair, giving him a long look. "Bye, Rep."
Before exiting, she went to go hock a few more MREs and shove them into her coat pockets-- and then vanished out of the tent.

He gave her a messy-haired grin before watching her go. "Later sis." It was easier to say than circus girl all the time, especially when she was no longer in the circus, she was part of their messed up extended family.
Then he eyed the MRE. She was probably right. He should eat. And it didn't look /too/ complicated to make either. With a grunt, he got up and wandered into the other side of the tent past the curtain to make something to eat.
And then maybe he'd try this ******** sleep thing again.

[Entering]
It was quiet in the resting tent, but quiet was a relative thing. This quiet was a breathing quiet, broken by the occasional snore or mumble, or by the low murmur of people talking in undertones. It wasn't the still, dead quiet of the tent in the Sahara, and Jordan was utterly grateful for that. He found an empty cot off to the side and settled down to rest, pulling his hood up.
And sat up again no more than a minute later, his hands clenched into fists and his breathing uneven. He'd been on the edge of sleep, dropping quickly into the dark behind his eyelids, and then in that drifting, half-sleeping state, the image of the bugs had come roiling up out of his memory. He'd struggled quickly awake, Ferros growling in helpless concern.
He was so damn tired, but he didn't dare sleep. He gave a moment's thought to going back to the infirmary tent, finding a corner there; but he wasn't injured, and he wasn't sure it would help anyway. The horrors of the desert were still too raw and fresh in his mind's eye. He leaned his elbows on his knees and rubbed his hands over his face, exhausted and frustrated.

Rep had made himself one of the strange rations after a good bit of instruction wrangling and gone back into the sleeping room to try and force himself to rest. He tended to approach sleep the same way he approached everything else, with the opinion that if you threw yourself at it with enough intent and rage that you'd be able to make yourself sleep. It wasn't the way to do it, and he ended up once again simply laying there, running things over and over again in his thoughts, thinking about if he was asleep yet, fixating on moment of tiredness as if they were a lifeline, as if THIS one, no THIS one, would be the one that'd pull him under into blissful sleep.
But even then he knew there'd be nightmares and that made him beyond anxious. The food hadn't helped, he just felt nauseous on top of everything else.
He ended up listening to every little breath, every little fidget of the other people sleeping in the room, still on edge to a certain degree. He hadn't heard Jordan come in, too engrossed in trying to ignore everything around him, but as he sat up Rep was listening intently to the quiet. He half sat up to look over his shoulder, to see if it was anyone he recognised, the way Clerise had been, and did a minor double take.
Trying very hard not to wake anyone else up he whispered "Ey Jordan." giving the other man wave if he managed to catch his attention.

Jordan looked up. Had he heard someone - yeah, he had. Rep was looking over at him, looking just as tired and just as awake as Jordan was. He got up and made his way quietly over to the other Sun hunter's cot; they couldn't have a conversation across the tent when everyone was asleep, and awkward staring would just be, well, awkward. "Hey," he said, just as quietly, offering a wan smile.

Rep wasn't good at distance whispering anyway, much too used to being loud and utterly obnoxious, as much as humanly possible. He didn't bother to sit up, just moved back enough there'd be room for Jordan to sit if he felt like it.
"Can't sleep?" he asked quietly, giving him the faintest little smirk. It might have been teasing if it wasn't so abundantly obvious he couldn't either.

Jordan sat down, leaning on his knees again and twisting a little to look at Rep. "Can't sleep," he confirmed quietly. "Tried, closed my eyes, saw bugs. You either, huh." It was more a statement than a question.

A subtle nod. "Mhm. Can't stop thinking. ******** exhausted." he agreed simply. He felt like he'd been laying here for hours and all he'd achieved was noting how successful other people were being at resting while he wasn't.
