She sat up straight once the Heir of Conquest began to speak again. Her ears stayed perfectly still while her eyes remained focused on the horseman as he began to explain. Dev cocked her head at the mention of rituals. Ah, yes. The Conquest Clan was very particular about rituals and ceremonies. It hadn’t been too difficult to realize despite how briefly she had been on the isle so far. The incenses’ purposes drew out her curiosity. Fortune? Luck? How was that possible? Did the scents attract it to the home? The question slowly rolled around in her brain as she continued to listen to Invictus, though it was discarded in favor of the properties he listed off. Success. Safety. Calming. How intriguing. Her tail swished a couple times, eager to begin making her own incense, but she patiently continued to listen.
Once he finished, Dev grinned and stared at her own box with eagerness. Which combination should she pick? Thin fingers picked up a few of the ingredients to bring up to her nose for a sniffing test. She hummed again before she decided to mimic one of the example combinations and picked out Juniper berries, cumin, and vetivert. If there was a second chance at making incenses perhaps she would experiment, but for now she focused on learning the process itself. She took out a pinch of her ingredients and began to grind them one by one. At the end, she cocked her head again and eyed her progress. Were they supposed to grind them finely or coarsely? She shrugged, deciding to leave her ground-up ingredients as is and continue to the next step. Hopefully the results wouldn’t be horrendous.
Dev fished out some charcoal powder. She poured some into the palm of her hand, but paused to consider how much to add to her mixture. Although she felt tempted to add a large amount, the ghoul decided it was best to strike a balance and have a medium amount. Dev grabbed a pinch of the charcoal and sprinkled it over her ingredients. She did it a few more times until she decided that while a smidge on the small side, it was also enough.
Next was the bonding agent, correct? She hoped so. The cu sith rifled through her box until she found some of gum of Arabic. An ear twitched as she examined the material. So it seemed all she had to do was stick it to her ingredients and then stick it to the stick. Dev dearly hoped she was right. She was tentative at first, but when she noticed how solid the incense appeared to be upon the addition of the gum her mood brightened. It wasn’t looking too bad so far.
However, it quickly fell apart afterwards. Her ears drooped. Was her incense ruined? Maybe she could salvage it somehow. She carefully scooped up her ingredients, glad that they weren’t incredibly fine so she could pick them up more easily. Lips pursed into a thin line as she attempted again, and to her relief it managed to stick together this time. While it wasn’t as strong as she had hoped, it wasn’t incredibly weak either.

If she recalled correctly, the final step was to wait so the incense could set. Dev relaxed, leaning back ever so slightly as she let her incense alone. She took the moment to observe how well the others were doing. While she skimmed over a few of them, Dev paid particular attention to what her friends were doing. She watched over the progress of her neighbor, Fallow. A corner of her lips tugged at how fine the ingredients were. Interesting. Interesting. How would his incense turn out, she wondered. She sighed and returned her attention back to her own incense. Was it ready? It appeared alright, but she feared that if she picked it up the entire thing would crumble. Frowning, she delicately picked it up with two fingers and was relieved to find that it was still in one piece.

Nuru was not known for his patience. He was twitching and squirming in his... uh.. mat-seat as he literally WATCHED his incense curing. When it seemed to wait long enough he snatched it up and bounced in his seat in some sort of embarrassing giddy little butt dance.
He made his own smelly thiiiing, he made his own smelly thiiing~

What in the Jack was she even doing? Amarus had clearly not ground the ingredients up very fine, which was remarkable given how hard could it be to grind up rose petals?? She stared at her dish and prepared to add Charcoal. She added... quite a lot, really; a slow, slow burn. This incense would last longer than she did, probably.
If her ability to deal with incense was any indication, Amarus would make a terrible addition to the Conquest clan. She tried to compensate for her poor grinding skills by adding a decent amount of adhesive, so that ideally the incense wouldn't, you know, fall apart or anything.
Her eyes scanned her classmates' work; was anyone else having these issues, or was she the only one who clearly could not make incense?

Rolled: 2 ((Rolled again... 3))Auri opened the bottle of binding solution. It poured like sap. "Could they use any messier stuff in these? If I had known I could have borrowed gloves," she said eyeing the strand of syrup. "Alright, that's enough." Auri had had lost patience and corked the bottle. She actually stopped at a good time. It didn't look half bad. She looked around the room to see how the others were doing. That pretty pink haired girl looked completely out out of. She had even started grinding outside her bowl... She still somehow managed to get the charcoal in there though. The other students seems to be doing well here and there, struggling on some steps more than others. Next Auri had to put the stick on. She carefully strung a long thin bead along the length of the stick. When she tried to place it it fell right out. "Gonna need some more it looks like..." she stated through the side of her mouth. Next she tried dipping the length of the stick into the bottle. It was immediately obvious this was a mistake. It came out with big globs of adhesive on it. If she put this in there she'd never going to get this out of the mold. "Lets try this again," she grumbled, obviously getting more annoyed with each step. The third time was the charm. By wiping the excess of onto a third piece of wood she got the right amount to make the stick finally stay. "About time," she huffed to herself. Now all she had to do was let it set. She just had to sit here. Just sit. This was getting painful for her as she wasn't one to wait for anything. Auri strained her mind for anything to pass the time. She was pushed to her limit when she started thinking of catchy brand names. BurnOuts she thought. That seems like a good name though she wasn't sure why. Auri figured it was finally time to check. "Huh maybe it's not all that bad." she said as she picked up her product. She barked with confidence "Now all you have to do is slap a logo on it and sell it at a five-hundred percent mark up! Easy profits."Step 1 Result: Frankincense, Juniper berries, Cumin, Vetivert (Batch 3) Result: 7 Step 2 Result: 6 Step 3 Result: 8 Step 4 Result: 2, 2, 3 Step 5 Result: 6

step two: mixing.
Folding his ears back, the Púca began the slow task of adding charcoal to his mixture. He wasn't quite sure though just how much to add, and instead of simply dumping all of it in, he decided to be... what was the word? Cautious? Funny how he'd never been that way before coming to the Conquest Isles. Snorting softly, Fallow glanced from side to side, ears prickling upwards in an attempt to listen to the sounds - if any - of others around him. "Hmm." Sighing, he went back to his own work, staring in scrutiny down at the mixture now in front of him.
They couldn't say he hadn't tried, at least.
step three: bonding.
The bonding part was easier, at least. Applying enough that it would - hopefully - hold together, Fallow frowned, his tail uncurling to swish from side to side in nervous concentration. What had seemed like such a quaint little exercise was suddenly becoming like a test to him. He'd never much cared for the finer arts, or anything that involved sitting and... well, sitting, but the crafting and the flavors of so many scents in the air intoxicated him, put his usually over eager mind at ease.
Humming softly, the Púca finished the application and frowned. W - what was the next step again?

Okay, so having used an okay amount of gum of arabic, she sort of muddled her way through to the fourth step. This incense... she was afraid of it. Very afraid. It had way too much charcoal, she'd hardly ground the ingredients but it looked like she could do at least one thing right; the incense adhered to the stick just fine, bonding her first try.
Well, this could be worse. It would smell awful and burn weird, probably, but at least it was on the stick? At this rate, Amarus wondered why she hadn't just put all the ingredients into a pile and asked Faustus to set them on fire for her.
She probably would have gotten better marks.

The idea of having to use fire still wasn't too appealing to the undead ghoul. But at least Invictus had mentioned the lack of flames today, which put her a little at ease. Perhaps when the time came, she could ask another to light them for her. Olivia had met nice enough individuals so far, maybe one of them would be happy to oblige.
Trying to put her mind at ease, the young ghoul put herself to the task and opened up the box. The trays were set up just like she had seen the instructor's and those around her. When she got to the bottom compartment, her nose was filled with a plethora of scents, making her close her eyes birefly before setting it to her side.
From observing the others, it seemed that there were a large variety of combinations being used. Some using what Invictus himself had set out and some their own. Olivia, not knowing what some of these plants and herbs were, took those familiar to her eyes. Mostly those she knew from trees. Cedar, Cypress Oil, Wood Aloe, Juniper and Sandalwood. They probably didn't have the best combined scent, but well... who knew.
The Wight went about grinding each ingredient as finely as she could.

If there was one thing Amarus was typically good at, it was waiting. Well, when she was in a right frame of mind, and it was acceptable to fall asleep. As she set the incense down to let it bond and set properly, she stared at it, felt herself get sleepy, and then looked over at Faustus.
"Done. Wake me up if I fall asleep, okay?" she asked the boil.
She didn't quite fall asleep, but she thought she did; Amarus came back to her senses with a jolt, and checked her incense. She stared at her results, and mumbled, "Better luck next time?"

step four: sticking.
Hmmm.
"Hmmmm."
The Púca stared in scrutiny at his work, tail swishing from side to side behind him. It... It seemed to be sticking? "Be good." He rumbled to it softly, as though it were an animate creature. "I do not want to have to stick you together again." As though listening, and maybe even abiding by his words, the finished product settled and did not fall apart. Fallow released a soft breath and looked from side to side and backwards at Mea and Dev to see how they were doing first before returning his eyes to his own work and nearly patting it before realizing he would probably accidentally break it first. Damn.

Wandering in to the classroom, Jack made it so he was as quiet as an owl, slipping in to a chair and placing the now slightly less occupied tote bag down on a chair next to him, holding it for the Sylph Spirit he had found earlier - it would be easier for Lucien to join them when he was a little less pre-occupied if he had a seat to slip in to.
Listening carefully, Jack was in awe with all the smells around him, looking at the different ingredients - some he was aware were very edible, and others he had never seen before, green eyes the size of saucers. Of course, there was the citrus-y fragrances whisper up in to his senses, assaulting him with smells that were very obviously offensive to cats, but he would work with what he had.
Grabbing the third set, he took to smelling what everything was, Frankincense, Juniper berries, Cumin, Vetivert - he seemed to like the berries, and if they weren't for his class, he'd pocket some to try and eat later. But . . . that would probably be in poor taste, and with the strength of five fluffy kittens, he went to work trying to grind up what he could, finding it . . . well it was. . . it was okay.
They looked ground up enough, the smelled nice, as he worked, and there wasn't that much chunkiness. Right?
