Calder chuckled at this. "Now you sound old."
Then he thought a moment.
"How old ARE you?" Everyone felt older than him aside from the first years, and that was only a recent discovery for him. That there were now students younger than him.

Riley paused before answering that question with a question.
Here? Her hand pressed against her heart. Or here? She repeated, as her hand rose up to touch her head.

Calder looked at her chest, then at her head. "Uh.." He rose his hand and gestured to all of her. "All of that." How did he put it more clearly? "Your body."
But the fact she had to question specifics got his attention. "Does your brain and your heart have another age? Cause I think I already know them." He refilled his tea.

My body, Calder, is twenty five years old. She was a drow, once. A very lovely little girl. She tapped her forehead gently. I, however, am eighteen years of age. Just recently in fact. My rite passed just this week, so now I have turned eighteen. Do you know what this needs? She looked down at the tea. Some biscuits. Shall I go fetch us some biscuits?

O-O
"Yeah. Biscuits...would be good." He waited for Riley to go grab some, and once she moved far enough away, he reached for his phone and texted Malodore. Sosiqui RILEY BODY IS 25??!!! THAT'S SO OOOOLLLLLDDD!!!!! He hid the phone away in his pocket and resumed looking innocent as he sipped his tea. As she fetched the biscuits, he called out to her from across the room. "Happy Late Birthday! Was your rite a nice one?" He wondered what type of rite she had to go through.

She shuffled to her kitchen, grabbed a box of creme filled biscuits and a box of plain ones, then returned to her bedroom and took her seat in the corner back. Only then, did she answer the question. My rite was the Horsemen's Trials. Each three years we must fight to the death, to be given the privilege of being allowed to live further. That is how we ensure only the strongest, and most clever of our time grow old enough to mate and strengthen the bloodline. This year, I cheated a bit. She snickered quietly as she opened up the box of creme filled biscuits, and plucked one out. I convinced my hive that the trials were life threatening. It wasn't that hard, but let's face it. No one died. Still, it counted, so I am allowed to celebrate another year of life.
She used both of her hands to hold the biscuit, sliding it apart so that the creme center was exposed. Then she brought it to one of her tentacles, and the tip opened just enough to start sucking the creme off. But thank you for your well wishes.

Calder watched her hair - uh, tentacles eat. He'd seen it far away when Malodore and her had been on their date, but he was watching it very up close. He wondered if it had a tongue in there, which then lead him to wonder if there were teeth, which then lead him to wonder if she brushed tentacle teeth each night, which then lead him to wonder about her somehow applying lipstick to them.
Derail thought process now.
Calder decided to eat another piece of sugar. "That's smart. So does this mean you'll be doing another one in 3 years or, since you're not going back, this would be your last fight for being allowed to live..." That sounded like a very sad thing to say.
He crunched on the cube of sugar and licked his lips. "Hey. If I was in your clan, that means I would have lasted 3 years too."

Calder's line of questioning set her at unease, as she truly started to think about it. There was conflict in her choices, and only now did she finally start to see it. She knew returning to the hive was a death sentence. And yet she had been preparing to return for her trials this year, as though it was an inevitability that had to happen. She still considered them such, and assumed that she would return in three years for her next one.
Except.
She'd just admitted that it meant death. Where, exactly, did her future lie in all of this?
I.. I don't know. She murmured hesitantly, burrowing her tentacle into another cookie. I suppose we'll have to deal with that question in three years. Not now. Her voice turned wry at his comparison, and she shook her head. No, Calder, I think, if you were an Illithid in the hive, you would have lasted much longer than just your first trial. You would, ah, as one might say, kick their a**.

Calder was quiet for a split second before he burst out laughing. Loud as he was, the noise shook him, and soon broke into a gasping laugh and a equine whinny as he completely lost it. HIM?! KICKING SOMEONE'S a**?!!
Oh, his sides still hurt from the trials, and laughing wasn't helping, but damn was that just golden.
When he finally managed some form of composure and wiped his eyes, he took a good breath to be able to talk. "You've got to be kidding! I haven't' even fought anyone back home, and can't even taken anyone on where it counts. I'm not Christof or Jericho. I'm still trying to get stronger, and even then I probably going to get murdered when the time comes despite all the work." If he went home to challenge Murchadh as he planned, he was going to get eaten alive. Who knew if he'd ever improve. "I don't know what your clan is like when it comes to trials, but kelpie challenges are nnnooo walk in the swamp." He wiped his eyes dry again and breathed out. "You don't get a harem being a pushover."

Riley stared at the laughing Calder with obvious confusion, and when he finally stopped, she blinked at him. You? You consider yourself a pushover? Riley put everything down for a moment, and leaned in, almost predatorily. You have done nothing but torment me for an entire year. You have been at my side, nonstop, keeping your ideals at the forefront as you beat down on my metaphorical door, pushing me out of my comfort zone time and time again, until I treat Christof right and do whatever you considered to be the right thing. All of this, you have done to the mightiest of predators in Halloween. And you consider yourself a PUSHOVER?
She clattered her teacup to the floor, and folded her hands in front of her. And don't think I forgot that night in the lake. As awkward as it may have been, your arms around me were unforgiving. You could have crushed me that night, Calder. So yes. I hold to my statement. If you were an Illithid, you would have survived several trials. Question me again, and I will prove myself wrong.
It was the first show of genuine, passionate, angry emotion she'd truly managed to muster up since the trials. And it felt good. She leaned back, and sighed. It sounded strangely happy.

She actually thought he was strong? She actually thought he could have crushed her? Coming from the president of the Fitness club, this was really saying something.
It was still rather embarrassing that she brought up the lake. "....the water just got to me then, and..you looked good enough to eat...." He arranged his hair a moment as he mumbled this.
He did look back to her. "You really think I could crush someone?" Maybe challenging Murchadh wasn't entirely hopeless. "That's like - the nicest thing you ever said to me." It made a monster proud.

Riley shifted uncomfortably, unsure of how to transition from anger, to being thanked, in the same moment. She brushed her tentacles back behind her head, and shrugged. Well. You're welcome. I suppose. I only tell you what is true. She flickered her gaze to the window, for a moment, before letting them drop. She'd fallen silent, as if she had nothing more to say.

Back to staring out the window. It just didn't seem natural, or maybe she needed some time alone. Still, he had to ask. He wasn't the type to stay quiet for long.
"Is everything okay?"

It is. She lied smoothly, her eyes still out on the window. I think I have just exhausted myself. I should perhaps rest. It's been a long week..
She finally turned back to look at the kelpie, her eyes softening affectionately. Thank you for the tea, though. And the company. Both were delicious.
