Guard Duty

With the window of time closing ever faster, the narrator can only speed through another brief session detailing the night's events centred on the drone. Funny if you think as Janzek would much prefer to keep the spotlight off of him as much as possible. It never did him any good, plus he always fancied himself more of a back-drop character than anything if one were to speak in terms of theatrics. So it only seems fitting now as he once again took up a post at the canyon path, eyes alert and thoughts ranging from boredom to high treason, but enough about him.

Scouts Needed

So here he was again, wandering through the desert with nothing more to guide him than a gps and his own quickly dwindling curiosity. When Aprife made it back to the area he had quit on a couple nights prior, the sinkhole had grown even larger and he had to make a wide arc to avoid slipping in. That certainly didn't make him feel any better about this particular expanse of sand. It was likely, he brooded, that there were even more sinkholes nearby. What would he do if the underground cave, or something similar, stretched on more miles than he could count? The doubt welled up all over again. He didn't want to be out here.

Sighing, the yellowblood pushed on against his sudden loss of will. It wasn't as if he could go back and ask to do something else. It would take way too much time and he would end up getting nothing done at all. While that seemed like a pretty cool option, he wasn't sure how excited the rest of the group would be to find him slacking yet again. Honestly, he could care less what they thought, but that they were basically stuck out in the middle of the desert meant he was pretty sure he wouldn't be able to get back to New Hemisect on his own. If they decided to force his hand, he was pretty much screwed.

So he stayed and he worked and for a little while nothing very exciting happened. That was fine. If this were an average day in NHC he would have been bored out of his skull, but this was completely different. In this situation, he wasn't too disappointed by it.

Aprife was surprised, to say the least, when the rest of the night went off without a hitch. No more sinkholes, nothing large and threatening. The map he had started was getting closer to complete, but for now it was time to head back. He was hungry and, despite his earlier acceptance of it all, was growing pretty unbelievably bored. There would be no way he could sleep until he got a little bit of excitement. Snickering to himself, he grinned. Maybe when he got back he could find someone to stalk entertain him.

Guard Duty

The following night's shift was particularly boring for Odette. A fellow guard brought along a harmonica to entertain himself, and while Odette loved music, she just wasn't in the mood to listen. She would have been more than happy to listen had the other guard been somewhat decent. Additionally, Swanmom had kept her up all day, so she was particularly irritable as well. The slow tunes agitated her auricular sponge clots while also making her more sleepy.

She couldn't focus on anything around her in this mood. She tried to concentrate on her duty, and she nearly failed to notice a fairly large slitherbeast that tried to make a snack out of her. When she saw it approach she fumbled with her glaive, nearly dropping it. She lifted it up with the curved side of the blade, shrieking while flinging it into the air. The other guard, taken aback, flung his folksy instrument into the air, which landed into the fire set up at the patrol site. He lunged after it instinctually, and froze with his face nearly in the fire, watching it melt with the most pained expression.

That works, I guess, Odette thought to herself. She felt bad for the other troll, but in her opinion it was really for the better. She knew he could find a better instrument to play, if music really was his passion. I know, she thought, I can suggest other instruments to him! It's the least I can do, considering the loss was my fault...

Zeffer stifled a yawn as he headed back to camp from a night spent helping to guard the place. He'd been doing so with Torero, but now that their shift was over, he was eager to have a bite to eat and a bit of rest before sunrise...but another important thing had to be taken care of. In all the excitement of shipping out to camp, he'd sort of lost track of Aprife. It'd only been a day or so since their arrival, and he figured it wouldn't be too tough to find his yellow-blooded compadre.

"Hey Rero, keep an eye out. I wanna introduce you to a buddy of mine, he's a yellowblood. I kinda meant to make the trip out here with both of you, but things got kinda messed up and we got separated." he scritched at the back of his mohawk and headed into camp, on the lookout for a black sweater and dreadlocks. When they got to the mess hall it didn't take long; it seemed that most trolls filtered through that area at the end of the day. Zeffer called out to him as he sifted his way through the crowd.

"Dude! Hey! There you are!" Zeffer plopped down into the empty seat next to Aprife, and waved Rero over. "Man am I glad to see you. Did you have a good trip out? Sorry for sort of disappearing after the gathering. I went back to my hive for some supplies...anyway, you heard we need to start making teams, right? I found us a third guy!" he snickered, and moved to present his little redblooded 'find', and newest friend. "This is Torero...Rero, meet Aprife. I think us three would make a pretty kick a** team. They said four, but a lot of trolls have already begun to team up..." he smiled hopefully.

There was an empty nutrient platter pushed into the middle of the table, long since forgotten. Aprife had taken to eating quickly, in part because the food was never all that good here, but also because the mess hall was one of the best places for gathering gossip without looking too terribly obvious. Loitering around the halls of their ramshackle hideout usually got him looks he really didn't want. So, as per what had become usual since living here, he had a notebook out in front of him. The page he had been working on was nearly full when something caught his attention beyond the usual heated conversation that escalated into a squabble.

Turning, the yellowblood caught sight of a familiar hairdo poking out above the crowd, at least out above the trolls their age. It was the voice that had alerted him first, though. Even amidst the hum of the room he could tell it was Zeffer. There was an obvious grin on his now brightened face as his friend landed unceremoniously in the chair next to him.

"Hey, 'bout time you showed up." Aprife had tried to find the blueblood the night they moved to the desert hideout, but hadn't had any luck. For the first night or so he hadn't thought much of it, there were so many sights and new things to explore, but recently he had been wondering if maybe Zeffer had changed his mind about coming. He was kind of glad to see he hadn't. "Good enough. This place is kinda crazy." He tugged momentarily at a handful of dreads, then sort of grimaced and pulled his hand away. If there was one thing he really missed, it was being able to bathe as much as he usually did. "Oh yeah, teams, right. I heard about that." The blueblood leaned, but Aprife leaned too, against the table so he could see this third teammate better. Of course he had no complaints about teaming up with his energetic friend, and really, whoever he had brought along was probably fine. More trolls ripe for the investigating. "Hey, Torero, right? Dude, I'm just glad to have a team." Aprife didn't like the idea of being alone in this at all.

Hacking

Oh yes here we were again! Back in the Hacking 101 class room. Muerte was here to resume work on an unfinished project- something he'd spent the majority of his sleepless day wondering about. He couldn't be sure if he could crack it today! But-! He was going to try.

And he sits down, looks at the guy in charge all too eagerly, why, he's already starting to go to work, and... CHRIST

Suddenly another far more incompetent troll bumps into the greenblood while he stares at the radar device. It's not a huge jostle, but enough to knock his chair enough to disturb his posture so much that he falters, hand on the screwdriver, suddenly jabbing into the exposed object.

A small fzzt and he looks at the small object with an incredulous look on his face. Shock, quickly replaced by anger.

"Hey! Now you watch where you are going you maladroit pleb" he hisses- thank goodness it's a orangeblood, because heavens forbid it be a higher caste!

...But even so, it was enough to disrupt the class enough that the indignant greenblood be asked to leave.

Whatever, he'd be back tomorrow.

Truth be told, Torero was sort of bummed to be done with guard duty already. He had been enjoying it, even if there hadn't been any actual serious work. Or hell, maybe that's why he had enjoyed it so much. Certainly, the time spent messing around with Zeffer and exploring the camp had been amazing for Torero, sheltered as he was. For all the faults everyone else could find, he was having a blast, feeling right at home. Well, not really, because home sucked and this was so much better.

A spring in his step, he was only too glad to follow behind the blueblood, his taller companion making a nice path through the other trolls. "Good thing I was around to keep you company then, right?" As if he were a sweet catch. In truth, he was was just glad the other blueblood allowed him to tag along, and was excited to see this friend he was talking about. It would only make sense that such an upstanding fellow such as Zeffer would surround himself with such cool dudes. Settling next to him, Torero grinned over at the yellowblood, scoping out those dreads. "Nice meeting you, Aprife!" Second friend get! "I think this team is set. Don't know about you guys, but I'm lookin' forward to headin' out."

"It is a bit of a madhouse, ain't it? I looked all over for you when I got here, but I didn't have any luck." Zeffer snickered before proceeding to introduce the two, which went well, and made him all the more pleased, despite being rather tired ******** yeah!" Zeffer seemed all too happy to have managed to get a team together. Not that he had trouble glomming onto other trolls, but he would much rather be part of a team of familiar faces and people he could work (or goof off) with, rather than a gaggle of strangers. He swung his backpack off and into his lap and began to dig through it.

"I can't wait either! Since we're goin' out into the desert, I thought we'd need some extra protection...here!" he finally found what he was looking for. It was two pair of goggles, just like his, except the frame around either pair were red and yellow. Not exact blood color matches, but it'd work well enough, he figured. He had no doubt that most of the rebel forces had been issued goggles for their work in the desert, but you could never have too much nifty eye protection. Besides, colors were fun, right?

Guard Duty

Another day, more work. While he'd sort of wanted to try his hand at scouting, Rero seemed to enjoy guard duty, so he'd given in and picked that once again. At least it was relatively easy, but he couldn't help but wonder if any of the rebels running the camp had noticed how...distracted they could get. It made him grin as he thought about the armorbeast they'd been teasing the other day. "Man, wouldn't it be sweet if we found someone spyin' and got to take 'em down or some s**t like that?" he said, thinking out loud as he peered off into the distance. They'd patrolled around the camp nearly twice, and the twin moons were high in the night sky.

All at once, he was torn from his thoughts as something popped up out of the sand. It was a large, angry stingerbeast, and it clacked its four claws menacingly at the two trolls. "Oh s**t. Careful Rero!" he called as he stopped quite suddenly, giving the creature a wide berth and immediately grabbing and flipping on his stun batons. It began to wave its claws angrily, swaying back and forth an standing its ground. Zeffer watched with amusement. "Kehehe! I think it wants to dance." he grinned wickedly, ready to fight. They wouldn't be able to play with this one, and Zeffer couldn't imagine that it was gonna back down. These were the kinds of nasty things they were supposed to keep the camp safe from.

Throwing his banderilla back and forth between his hands, so irreverent to the tool of his trade, Torero grinned at his friend's musing. "I haven't fought another troll in a while, it'd be fun. Hey, maybe--" Just as he had begun to make the sweet suggestion that they should totally have a friendly throwdown, an enemy that most certainly wasn't a troll cut him off. Aha, now this was more Torero's forte. Gripping the banderilla tightly in his hand, he was suddenly light and quick on his feet as he moved towards the stingerbeast, caped arm up and fluttering with his movements. "You don't have to warn me!" he laughed, cocky, enjoying the chance to be a little flashy.

"Fighting is like a dance, isn't it?" Close enough now to get a good stab in, he dodged a stinger, retaliating with a quick jab of his own, wrenching the barb in with a sickening crack as he broke the armor, and then pulling back, bobbing away as its claw clacked desperately at his cape. He'd make sure there would be no new tears anytime soon, mocking the creature with the swaying of the red cloth as he danced away, allowing the claws and stingers to get close enough to be dramatically captivating, just like he was taught, but not too close. "You're up, Zeff! Of course, Torero wouldn't let himself have all the fun, distracting the weakened stingerbeast enough to allow Zeffer to get in on the action.

Athene sighed as she looked around, bored out of her mind. The redblood that had followed her before was gone, on what she perceived to be Guard duty, and there was nothing to note on her new route she had been given. It was boring, completely ordinary, and almost insulting to someone like her to was itching with energy.

At least when she got back to the camp she could knit, her supplies had come along with her when she had made her way down to the first forest. Oh how long ago THAT had been! At least she had managed to send a message to owl-dad that she was fine before his fluffy head started to worry. Or maybe not, he had been a little absent minded of late. Kicking the sand up, she made her way back to the camp, her hands coming up to fix the bandanna that had been a little messy on her head.

Guard Duty

"It's just like, y'know man, if we didn't have the hemospectrum, then everybody would get along, you feel me?"

Was this troll eating sopor slime or something? Odette tried to make sense of the troll's ramblings, after all he had been rambling for a few hours now, but it reached a certain point where it wasn't worth the effort. He seemed fully incapable of making a proper sentence, let alone getting his point across. He was looking at her now, expecting an answer to the question, but she entered panic mode, mind screaming OH GOG HE'S STARING RIGHT AT ME WHAT DO I DO?

"Uh well..." she coughed out, "I think that even if the hemospectrum didn't exist, somebody would think of something else to judge others on. Maybe they'd start judging others on gender, because we always have a queen, and never a king? Or maybe they'd give more respect to trolls with special powers?" Odette looked toward the other guard, who seemed to be in a daze. She continued anyways, "That's the problem with being part of such a violent culture, because trolls will think of anything to inflict suffering on someone else."

The other guard snapped out of his daze with some delay, mumbling something like, "Heyyy, it's like you're talking about that one Troll Dr. Seuss book! I love that book, man..." Yep, he didn't understand a single word I said, she thought. Well, it's no use arguing, back to work!

Of course, as was his way, Aprife was smiling and smiling and silently observing Torero for a good minute or so. This guy seemed pretty energetic, too, he thought. Not a bad thing, not at all. The yellowblood found he liked those types of trolls better. A bit more scouting would tell him whether or not he would have to work very hard to get the redblood to spill something interesting about himself. For now he was satisfied with the conversation, though, and he gave a brief nod and a "You too, Torero." before tipping his head back towards Zeffer.

Both of them were excited to leave. Aprife wasn't completely sure how he felt yet. Normally he was a huge fan of change. When life was stagnant it was boring. Yet, for the times he'd been out scouting so far, he'd seen mostly sand and sand and more sand. Not exactly a party. He just sort of… grinned more and nodded.

"Woah, those for us?" This was a nice distraction. Reaching for the yellow goggles he could only assume were meant for him, he slipped them on. They fit pretty comfortably over his puffy mop of hair. It only took a quick adjustment to get right. "I could've used these the other day…" he mused, mostly to himself, before slipping them up to his forehead. "These are great, dude. Thanks!"

-------------------------------

Scouts Needed

Aprife was a troll on a mission. He had made good, if uneventful, progress on his last night out in the desert. Tonight he thought… maybe it would be okay to mess around a little bit. Now his work was having fun. Part of him was subconsciously trying to make the desert more interesting. It would make things easier when they finally ended up leaving the camp to search for the jadeblood. Kicking at the ground, he laughed some. Luckily the wind had died down a little while ago. He would be safe from sand-and-dirt-in-the-face. For now.

The yellowblood was so busy fooling around that he didn't notice the fuzzy something sneaking up behind him until it was far, far too late. It brushed against his leg and he almost jumped out of his skin, fumbling at his bag to try and pull out his whip, only to realize as he spun on his heel that it really hadn't been something to worry about in the first place. It was just a hopbeast. Little, mostly unthreatening, and Aprife was suddenly… intrigued. Small hands reached out for the animal, but it skirted away before he could touch it. Okay. Now it was a challenge. Running after it, he found he could only keep up for a minute or two before it was obvious he wasn't gonna catch it. He wasn't gonna get close to it.

Sighing, he stopped, hands on his knees. What was he supposed to do now? As half-lidded eyes watched the form of the hopbeast fade into the distance, a shadow crossed its path so quickly that he had no idea what had even happened. Blinking, Aprife stood at full height, and before he knew it that shadow-something was getting bigger. No, it was coming this way. The closer it got, the more the yellowblood's expression fell. It was fuzzy, just like his little friend had been, but it was obvious from the large paws and bloodied muzzle that it wasn't going to run away if he reached out for it.

"Oh, s**t!" Now he was fumbling in his bag with real urgency. He barely pulled the scourge out in time to slap it across the creature's face. It yelped and backed away, but only temporarily. Aprife had to take quite a few swings before the beast finally gave up, fleeing back into the desert. That was certainly enough fun for one day.

Hacking

Oh right here we are.

Back at the hacking class of course. The radar from before was useless now; the stab from the class the other day ripped a vital wire that proved more cost efficient to leave un-fixed. He sighed, if only it wasn't for that lowblood...

Oh but he was getting distracted. Sitting in the class, seeing familiar faces. It was starting to bore him a bit. Oh well, he'd give the adults some attention and time. Rather then tinker with things, he listens to someone drone on and on about wires, what to look for, useful techniques to start with when you have no idea what to do. Mundane things to the scientist, even though he probably picked up a thing or two, you'd never hear him admit it or say it.

Instead he just watches and listens and doesn't snap at anyone. The prior day was far too embarrassing, if his ego could ever feel such a horrendous emotion. Spoiler: he didn't. Not one bit- CHRIST stop jumping to conclusions already!

It was a bit more difficult to concentrate this time around, but he stuck it through. Stuck it out, learned a thing, still quite and anti-social as ever. Avoiding the other trolls, the class is over, dismissed, time to go back to your respiteblock quarters. Another thing he didn't really enjoy. Hell, he didn't enjoy this place at all. They'd better hop to his own personal benefits soon!

But whatever. He wondered if he would be back to the class or not. Maybe he'd take a break.

This is a roll for scouting, despite the narrator once again finding a lack of details to explain it. For some reason the drone's expertise in this area just magically becomes a bit more versatile.

Maybe the night before had been some sort of unfortunate, karmic experience. Maybe since he had decided to goof off instead of work, the desert had sent the fangbeast after him in retribution. Nah, Aprife was pretty sure he didn't believe in that sort of thing. So it wasn't surprising to see him fooling around yet again, kicking stones across the more solid, rocky part of the desert he had come across.

It's not as if he wasn't doing some kind of work, of course. The yellowblood had turned it into a game of sorts, counting the larger boulders and keeping track of their colors. Gray, light gray, gray, brown, gray. It wasn't the best game, but it was something.

Giving the rock he was playing with a much harder kick, it soared back behind a pile of, you guessed it, rocks. He thought nothing of it at first, only looked around for another suitable toy. It wasn't enough of a distraction for him to miss the angry hum of many tiny wings. Over the pile of rocks came a swarm of bees, twisting through the air before diving straight at him, the only thing not stone or sand for miles. They knew what to do.

Aprife paled. As quickly as he could, the young troll turned and bolted, not bothering to check the map or the gps for directions. There wasn't enough time. After a while he was able to escape, hidden in a small, good spot he had found on the way out. When he was sure they had buzzed past him, he sprawled out, relieved. Aprife and bees did not mix by any stretch of the imagination, despite the fact that his lusus was a bee. He didn't dislike them, there were other factors involved. In the end, he was just glad he hadn't been stung.
