Lesson learned: his shoulder would ache from the pressure for at least an hour or so. Ow, ow, ow . . . He rolled them in their sockets a few times as Gene went back to the couch, making sure they were still functional. “Y-Yes’m,” Mort mumbled before taking the offered slice with a wince of a smile. As he ate (and as Lanna cooed and rolled over to get belly scratches), he listened to the ghoul’s explanation, frowning when she mentioned a certain reaper. “Roch? Yeah, once threatened k-kill me if didn’t fight . . . Was at Christmastival.” A rather less than terrific showcase of his person: half the time he was too afraid to move (as most things coming their way had been lit candlestick creatures), and the snow had been messing with his circuitry something awful when it melted on him. “Weird guy, b-but not good to anger.”

One slice down, he took a second and tried his best not to down it without chewing; he’d forgotten how hungry he was. “Can see why what said wouldn’t work, b-but yeah. Boon.” A nice pair of them against his neck, for instance. Mort fiddled with the scarf still there, pondering her question and trying not to look flushed from previous fantasies. ”Err . . . Couple’ve ideas. Could be inventor, do like making things. Or IT guy, help with computers, decent pay. O-Or maybe just engineer.” He hadn’t quite decided yet since his interests tended to switch around at times. “You?”

Gene flinched inwardly as the boil mumbled a 'yes'm', a through sign of submission. Yup, she'd totally been a predator tonight. Ugh, now how was she going to make up for it? Pretend to fall asleep during the movie and see what he would do? No, that was aggressive too, and aggressive was not what she wanted to be. Considering her options, the Doppelganger decided that petting Lanna some more would be a good idea, as it soothed and stimulated her.

I think an inventor would be fun! I mean, you're already on that path and all, plus you could make really useful things that would help a lot of people." Like a weapon the turned Hunters into weapons for Halloweeners to use. Yes, that'd be just deserts indeed. IT sounds cool, could be a little frustrating though, with all those people who don't know how to work tech. An engineer would be neat too~" Yes, compliments. Compliments healed damage, right? So did sharing dreams and other goopy cute stuff.

She loved goopy cute stuff.

"Oh, me? Well... it's kind of a far-fetched dream really, but I'd actually like to buy the Bloodbucks in the maul and own my own Cafe." Haha, right. Like that would ever happen. "But, as an alternative, I wouldn't mind joining the Trick or Treat Coalition..."

"Maybe." In return Mort gave a tentative smile: the idea of a method to turn humans into weapons themselves was very tempting, but they weren't made of FEAR. He doubted there was a way to convert whatever it was that made them into useable material, unless maybe they scared them to the point of being completely made of FEAR . . . but Hunters were a hardy breed, more likely to boast and sneer than scream. "Would be easier help people with tech or without. B-But if there is way to convert Hunters, will find it." And he would offer all the students of Amityville a free weapon to turn on the damn humans and see how they enjoyed it.

The mention of the ToTers, though, made him blink. "Don't know much about Trick-or-Treaters," he admitted before sipping his drink, Lanna's "prrrruuuuuu"ing easily audible over the sound of the carbonation; belly scratches were her favorite. "But think w-would be good manager of Bloodbucks if nothing else." Confidence, determination, and the will to push when necessary. He nodded thoughtfully at the reflection. "Mrrr, would be great manager methinks, running tight ship and all. Would visit lots, 'course; still have many drinks to try! But, er, cafe? Didn't know you cooked too."

Gene, spurred on by Lanna's purring, decided to start scratching the Fancy Foxfire behind the ears affectionately. She needed more Foxfires in her room, she thought as a side note. So cute and fluffy and warm. She didn't mind the cold, no, but warmth was quite nice when one had no natural body temperature.

She nodded as Mort spoke about making a converting mechanism, relishing the more than likely impossible thought of turning the Hunters against each other, much like they did to Halloween Citizens. Poetic vengeance; what a sweet thought.

"I don't know too much about the Trick or Treaters either, but the job seems quite lucrative. I mean, getting to do whatever you want with little to no consequences? Yes, please." Plus, you know, they were almost like role models to the students. Almost.

Wait... cooking? Ummm... "C...cook? Umm... I figured just sandwiches and muffins would do... Suddenly, all the ghoul's bravado and confidence seemingly drained from her. She...wasn't the best of cooks. The fanciest thing she made was scarghetti in blood sauce. "Crap. Mort, I need to learn how to cook. Like, actually cook. Oh Jack Skellington." She visibly deflated, munching slowly on the stick of garlic bread. She was almost a Year Two, and should be focusing on her eventual career. Heck, she should have been focusing on it during the course of First Year. Craaaaaaaaap.

"Mort...who do you know who cooks?"

"Uuhhh." He scratched his chin thoughtfully. "Think know someone for cooking. Name is Xiu, baku, dream eater demons. Heard on Groanspring that l-liked baking. But, er, if just for Bloodbucks, think sandwiches n' muffins're fine. Cookies too?" He remembered a few desert-looking cakes in the line up that time he visited Gene at work but couldn't put names to them. "Can cook, change appearance, is independent - heh, th-think could get anyone to like you in seconds."

Mort was of the same mind as the ghoul: hand out compliments like treats and things could get patched up relatively quickly, he hoped.

"Plus if in Trick-or-Treaters Coalition, hear can go to Human World whenever th-they want! N' if ghost, could phase in n' out've sight, so wouldn't have worry about being caught." The more he thought about it, the more Mort agreed that Gene would make a great member of the society - assuming she didn't mind the seedier portions. "Think is good career choice if really like travel. Could see, yeah."

Him, he probably wouldn't be able to do it. Zombies rotted like normal corpses in the Human World; his smell would drive people away before he could get near, and even if not there was the whole "not really fast" fact he'd have to deal with.

"Oh! Yes, please put me in contact with her." Gene set Lanna down for the time being, leaning forward as they continued their talking. Talking was good, especially when it was non confrontational and about life goals and such. Oh...he still thought she wanted to manage Bloodbucks. "Um, hon, I don't want to manage Bloodbucks. I want my own independent Cafe...and that means learning to bake and cook. Tell you what," She put a finger on her chin and her eyes lit up. "Next time we hang out, I'll have learned how to make a three course meal, and I'll cook it for us." Non stated challenge accepted.

Anyone, eh? Well, Morty, she wanted you to like her. But how was she supposed to do that? All her advances seemed predatory, she had injured one of his hands, gave him a good shoulder bruising, and had just told him that she'd be willing to join a borderline criminal organization. She really wasn't as confident as he made her out to be when around the Zomboil.

"So...about that movie? Which ones do you have?" She scooted over to another seat of the couch, patting it for him to come sit once he put the movie in. "I'm game for whatever, so just chose one."

Oh. Whoops. Bloodbucks, cafe, it was culinary-centric at least. 8U; "S-Sounds good! Look forward to," he replied chipperly nonetheless, not one to pass up a full course meal when offered to him so freely; plus, well, the pizza had been a bit more expensive than he'd like. "Will give you Groanspring account info after movie, i-is how I know her from."

Their conversation had taken such a casual turn he had almost forgotten the not-date elements that had been plaguing his nerves. Sure, it was just an innocent offer of the seat next to her on the couch, but in reality it was probably so much more . . . He hesitated briefly before moving his drink to her side of the table. "Err, not much here, but do have Webflix," he told her as he stood to get the computer off his bed. Placing the laptop before her, he sat on the couch and quickly typed his password to log in and showed her the main page. "C-Can, er, search n' see what you want. N' mood for whatever too."

And in the meantime he was going to not be stiff with nervousness. Eyeing his forgotten mischief hand still left on the table, Mort leaned forward and snatched it, deciding to use the time she took to search to sew it back on. Thankfully he had fallen into the practice of keeping a needle and thread on his person.

"Cool, cool. I hope she'd be willing to teach me." Though, with her apparent confidence, she might be able to get anyone to teach her how to cook. Note to self: use confidence more, it gets you places. Apparently.

Indecisive? Well, she could stand that. Besides, this gave her the opportunity to choose some mushy gushy romantic comedy that would totally put Mort in the right moods. Humor, love, and total cheese-balling were the ultimate cure all, especially when coupled with a tub of Been & Scary's Eyescream...

Or was that just ghouls?

Oh, this movie! Double clicking on the image of the movie, then clicking "rent", the opening sequence of the movie Failure to Haunt*. She sat back, gave the laptop and smiled, watching as the mushy gushy hilarious started.

Within five minutes, the ghoul began to shiver. Weird, since she never really minded the cold. She almost considered cuddling closer to Mort, but ditched the thought at the last second. Ploy number two would work best. "Mort, do you have a blanket? I'm feeling a bit chilly..."

Cold? Well his room was a fridge, and he himself was rather chilly to the touch (the thrum from his brain couldn't account for heat after all). "Yeah, hold on." Mort got up and edged past the table to the other side of the room where a chest lied. Inside were his D&H books and some characters sheets mostly, but after some digging he did managed to draw out a solid gray blanket. Mama had given it to him in spite of his insistence that he never felt cold, saying he'd need it for whoever did while visiting.

Granted he never thought it would turn to something like this with, well, anybody. Certainly not in his slipshod example of a room.

Mort slipped back onto the couch and offered her the blanket, scooting just a bit away from her; he imagined even with a blanket Gene would still feel cold if a cold body was close. He wasn't very surprised to see she had picked a rom-com, the title sounding familiar but not quite enough to ring a bell. "Seen before?" he asked her as they went past the opening sequence, chuckling at a joke.

Lanna, seeing that they were settling down, made sure to place herself in the ghoul's lap for maximum chance of continued pettages.

Taking the blanket quite gratefully, Gene wrapped herself in it, and then Lanna. Yes, she definitely needed more Foxfires in her life. Chuckling at the same joke, shaking her head at how dumb the male character seemed. They always started out like this, though. Every rom-com was pretty much the same plot. Guy with problems meets girl with problems, they fall in love and end up fixing each other through them. Predictable? Yes. Funny? Absolutely. "No, I haven't. Heard of it, thought we'd give it a try."

For the next half hour, she contented herself with the petting of Lanna. Then, the awkward set in. She fidgeted, not really watching the movie. There were a few stifled laughs, but nothing big. The couple had just fallen in love, and the atmosphere of the room became quite tense. What do? Ummm...

Snuggle time? But Mort was naturally cold, and she was feeling cold at the moment, so that made no sense. Give him the look? No, that would probably be creepy, and not in the good way. Ummm...

Head on shoulder? Yes. The best maneuver...or so said Rogue magazine. Giving a small yawn, she leaned to the side, just enough to where her head fell on Mort's shoulder. She didn't tense - that would be a dead giveaway - and simply looked up at him, smiling.

"Enjoying the movie?"

Mort was, to be honest, not one who usually looked to romantic comedies for entertainment; much like Gene thought, he found them to have pretty much the same plots, just with different situational jokes. But even so, he chuckled at some of the displayed wit, only tensing a bit when he suddenly felt Gene's head on his shoulder. Here it was, undeniable proof (if the movie and food weren't evidence enough) that he was looking at an actual date, and not a half-sorta-maybe-kinda thing he had been trying to look at it as.

Ho boil. He swallowed a little hard.

The notion was pleasant, because Jack he was actually being viewed as dating material. But at the same time he couldn't fathom what Gene saw in him. Him or Bella . . . But that was neither here nor there. One at a time, boil, one at a time.

"Y-Yeah," Mort managed to reply. "Don't watch rom-coms much, but i-isn't bad." Wasn't she cold? Was she compromising with the blanket, prepping herself for something more? Ghouls liked to plan these sorts of things out . . . But she had gone through the effort, hadn't she? It wouldn't be a good idea to stiff Gene, even if he was unsure - that was how he was raised. So eventually he did put an arm around her, even if that did contradict keeping the ghoul warm.

Mort was just trying to do the right thing in the most awkward of situations. She couldn't take that badly, right? "E-Er, you?" he reflected back the question, unable to look at the ghoul lest he start doing something stupid in his consequent slkfjsldfjkldsfj state of mind.

THUMP. That would have been Gene's heart if she had one when Mort put his arm around her. Cuddles? Oh dear Jack, they were actually cuddling. Oh dear Sally and blasted Oogie Boogie, they were freakin' CUDDLING. Her brain stopped for a few minutes, her mouth hung open, and Lanna was probably whining about a lack of attention. She didn't quite care. Cuddling. With Mort.

Best. Day. Ever.

"It's alright. These movies are cute, but really predictable. Watch, they're about to get in some big conflict over one of the guy's personality traits." Just as she said it, the ghoul started yelling at the man about being a lazy slob, which he countered by calling her an uptight witch, which was quite offensive since the woman was a demon.

"I mean, romance never happens this quick. It's good entertainment though." She dug herself a little deeper into the boil's chest, fully aware. They were cuddling now, so.... it was totally fine.

Booyah.

That was the thing with ghosts: they didn't have heartbeats he could feel or hear to judge states of emotion. But Gene's new position against his chest spoke for itself at any rate -she was enjoying this, and so was Mort to an extent under all the nervousness. Regardless of whether this would get serious or not, it was one of the greatest of compliments to his ego to know that a ghoul didn't mind cuddling with him.

If only he knew how much more complicated things would grow after today.

"S'the thing, yeah . . . Isn't life-like," Mort agreed with a little nod, adjusting his arm to go with her shifting of position until it was secure still about her shoulders. "Has elements, yes, but follows same formula. Think life c-can have patterns but not follow same thing every time. N' love, well . . . is complicated on it's own. Wouldn't follow schedule even if gave one, y'know?"

Jack, look at him talking about it like he had any clue. The only love Mort knew of was of the familial kind. But his knowledge of manga and comics at least told him that romance wasn't always the same path tread over and over, and that it could get twisted in all sorts of ways.

Feeling a little confident enough to think that he wouldn't go crazy nervous, the zomboil chanced a glance down at her. "Y-You, er, cold like this?" he asked, just to be sure he wasn't making the blanket a moot point.
PostPosted: Sun May 06, 2012 1:56 am

She was perfectly content in the here and now, cuddling with the boil. First date? Success. She wouldn't advance to kissing today, that was probably too much. Actually, not probably, it was a definite. This was fine, non-predatory, and extremely comfortable. If time had to be stuck at one point, it would be this.

But, the thought kept nagging at her; what would the future be? Boilfriend and ghoulfriend? Friends with benefits? 'Hanging out?' She hadn't a clue. And what would happen if they got to...that point. She blushed at the thought and dug her head into Mort's chest cavity, eyes shocked open at the fact that she'd even thought about that. Oh Jack, how naughty of her.

But it seemed like everyone else did it.

But there were a lot of naughty people at this school.

You know what, Gene, we're just gonna cuddle, okay? Cuddling was where she told her mind to stay. All the cuddles please.

"Nah, not cold. Lanna makes a good foot warmer, plus the blanket is helping. We could share if we wanted." Cuddling, only cuddling. Maybe spooning, if she fell asleep.

She'd always enjoyed the thought of being the little spoon.

"Er . . ." Share the blanket? Share the blanket and let their bodies touch more than they already were? Gene had to know he was cold-natured by his room temperature alone . . . Wait. Oh Jackdamn, this was another ploy! She was going to set him up for making out! Romantic comedy in background, just them in his room, sharing a blanket, heads close to another, a shared meal -

Sdlfkjdlkfjslkdjfskdj

While Mort didn't have the usual look of blushing most did (which was pink or red tinged), his face did look more bruised as his congealed blood sluggishly rose to the surface of his blue skin. It probably wasn't flattering to look at - he looked less like he was blushing and more like someone had recently punched him around his cheek bones. "M'n-not cold," the zomboil mumbled, quickly moving his gaze back to the movie even though he wasn't bothering to follow the dialogue anymore at this point. No, he was only intensely aware of Gene inching her way onto him (somehow her head was now on his chest, when did that happen, oh Jack, oh Jack). "S'why k-k-keep room c-cold. Helps preserve b-body."

Well, her face was right there, so . . . maybe he could beat her to the punch? No wait, that was assuming she wanted to kiss on the first date, and as pushy as Gene seemed today Mort was too afraid to assume anything. But all the signals pointed in the right direction. But she hadn't mentioned it. Oh Jack damn it!

You know what. She was probably doing all of this just to get him flustered. She was probably enjoying watching him squirm.
