"Good save. Could have been a bit better, but I'll give it to you." she laughed, straight back into her good mood. She couldn't expect him to be an entire gentleman with his reputation proceeding him. They were having a civil conversation and they hadn't thrown anything at each other yet - including fists.

"What do you mean it's happened before?" Cass had never read the files on the 1999 incident, so she was completely out of the loop on that front. She might have heard some small whispers about computer files, but beyond that? Nothing. She hadn't done any file sniffing. She hadn't gone through any computer stuff to read up on the old reports. If she had? She probably would have been livid.

Cass did not become livid easily.

It was surprising he was actually pleased by the fact he hadn't scuppered the conversation. There really weren't many people on the island he'd found he could talk to at length without slipping up and offending them beyond redemption. So it was nice to have Cass who actually seemed able to ignore the times when his strange values clashed with everyone elses.

"Eh. Well." He frowned. "Probably shouldn't even be talking about it, but someone found a USB last mission. Apparently there was a huge ******** mission in 1999 that sent oh like.. two hundred full hunters against the horsemen. And well, like two people." he held up two fingers, he could count to two, amazing. "Actually came back. But the world didn't end. If it happens again though, we are probably ******** shrugged. "Cause I don't think we have that many trainees, let alone hunters."

Cass actually looked shocked. Like, horrified-shocked, not surprised-shocked. She wasn't surprised that the Hunters got sent to their death - that happened all the time and she knew it. But...

"198 deaths...? To prevent that whole 'the world will end in 2000' thing that was floating around back then?" she was young, but she vaguely remembered it. In fact, that was around the same time she'd started seeing things and her whole life went downhill............ Were the two connected somehow? She didn't know. Maybe she didn't ever want to know.

"That's........ s**t." she looked like she was trying to process what had happened and how they could prevent it the next time. "I know Caelius can handle Conquest, but if we have three more Horsemen to deal with besides that, we need to all get our asses in gear to even have a hope of surviving. ******** being a real hunter, if we can prevent it and not all die, that'd be ideal."

There was a hanging 'But' in he air that she didn't actually say, though.

"Not sure exactly how we'd manage that in less than 8 months, though."

"Yeah, it was a ******** downer to read when I stumbled across it. A real ******** worry." He shrugged, he'd had a few days to digest the information and decide it was much too huge, too laden with implications to actually deal with in any real way. "Too real. Its like, all I figure we can do is train and get the ******** on with things, be the best we can possibly be for when or if everything blows up in our face."

"Suppose it makes sense that they didn't tell us about the failed mission. For some people it'd be a bit of a downer I guess, might break their motivations. For me though its more lit a fire under my arse. I don't intend to lose to those ******** if I can help it, however crazy the odds are." He smirked with a nod. "Death is everywhere here, I just don't intend any of them to be /me/."

Clarice had said surviving was possibly one of his virtues, he intended to prove her right with every scrap of his being.

"I can only imagine the people who survived that and how they turned out....." Probably none of their division heads - well, maybe them. Maybe a couple of them if they'd been sent out in that adventure. She didn't know the specifics of it being an all-or-nothing deal or not.

"Explains why it feels like sometimes we've got nothing but trainees floating around here. I mean, I'll admit that that's kind of disheartening. But that was also 12 years ago! I'd like to think things have improved since then and we have a better shot at getting rid of the problem." She didn't sound like she was about to be giving up because of the odds either. "8 months is quite a bit of time to get our act in order too."

She hoped so, anyways.

"Just means we need to train harder, right?" she grinned. "Might as well work at getting my clearance for the Runic Weapons before then too. I had it and then they lost my goddamned paperwork."

"Yeah, I got myself runic clearance for the guns." He remembered the gruelling runs of Deathsweeper he'd had to endure to do it, a training course he really never wanted to repeat if he could avoid it. "I don't see how repeatedly and ******** horribly dying is training for using a gun, but there's a ******** of stuff I don't understand here. Maybe it taught me some deep ******** life lesson about how little fun it is to get impaled"

He did give her a proper grin. "But yeah I agree, maybe things are more advanced now. Maybe the tech's there to combat their s**t better than back then. And yeah, eight months to get ourselves ready. We aren't getting taken by surprise this time either. " Yeah, it sounded so much better when you actually put it like that.

"Speaking of training, I'd better get down to the gym while its still quiet. I can't stand it once people start getting properly stuck in over there." He stood up, shoving his chair under the table and stretching lazily.

He gave her a lazy smile. "Thanks man for the like, sandwich and stuff. And filling me in on s**t. You aren't half bad for a bird."

Cass laughed. "Play Jenga a few times. I still hate that game and I didn't like having to pass it off again. Was washing permanent marker off of myself for a week. Consider it as 'surviving Caelius' volatile personality' training."

Which if they could survive Caelius, they could survive Horsemen, right? It was a similar idea, right? She really wondered that. Maybe she'd make a chart later. Caelius in one circle, Horsemen in the other circle. She imagined the overlap would be extreme.

However, it seemed like the pair had wasted enough time dawdling and Cass agreed it was probably time to get a move-on. "Yeah, I should probably go do a Deathsweeper Run and see how that turns out for me now." she laughed as she got up, stretching. "It wasn't a problem, really. I don't have any reason to hang you out to dry when there's so much going on around here. That'd just be a b***h move on my part."

Cass grinned.

"You're not half bad yourself either. It was nice chatting with you..." After a moment, she offered him her hand. "I'm Cassandra Norris, by the way. Just Cass is fine, and I'm sure my name has been dropped a few times in mission passing, but I figured a reap introduction was better than letting reputations proceed either of us."

"I've never actually played Jenga. Before I came to the island or since I got here. I'm guessing the game here is somewhat more horrible than back there." he didn't even want to know where permanent marker came into it.

He gave her a warm smile, an actual genuine one for a change. "My name, apart from the usual Rep, is William Reid. Just ******** hate my given name." He nodded, he very much agreed, getting a chance to talk had turned out much better than he could have guessed from twitter. He shook her hand fleetingly, apparently still rather iffy about any kind of physical contact. "Hopefully I'll get a chance to see you around. "

"I would say enjoy your Deathsweeper, but no one actually does."

"It's the Life-training game. That should say enough." She replied.

"Well, I'll just call you Rep then, since I'd rather call you something you like than something you don't. My bro Bix is the same way, that's not his actual name. Mist Trainee 'Before' is also that way. It just rolls that way around here, so I'll keep it rolling." she grinned. "I'll try to not be a stranger, we can do a training run together sometime if you're up for it. Otherwise, I hope you have a good time in the Gym." she nodded as she stepped away, waving to him over one shoulder as she took her own leave.

"See ya around!"
