"Makes sense to me," Madison assured him, resting a hand on one of Kouki's hilts. "I just wish he'd, like, warn me or something. Because that was freaky... but awesome." She looked thoughtful. "I bet that could be seriously useful in a real fight. Once I get used to it."
She grinned at Ferros' aside. "Yeah, I guess words makes more sense than just radiating hate, or something. Straight-up emotion's too easy to get wrong, huh?"

Jordan nodded. "You were moving so fast I could barely follow you," he said. "That could really work well for you when you get it down. It was working really well as it was."
I'm good too, Ferros grumbled petulantly.
You're awesome. You have different strengths; they're stupidly fast, but we hit hard.
The dragon made a long hissing sound, but settled back, satisfied with the feel of the praise.
"Straight-up emotion is complicated," he corrected. "It's not hate when he's insulting me; most of the time it's more because he likes me, or because he wants to see if he can make me jump, or something like that. A lot of things at once. Putting words on it keeps it from getting too sappy, I think. Anyway, it's fun."

"Hee hee. How funny~ Kouki never does that with me." She sounded thoughtful, as if she wasn't sure whether she wanted Kouki to try or not. "Different personalities, I guess. It's weird, how much like people they are... when I imagined up monsters when I was a kid, I don't think I gave them personalities. Not real ones. And yet..."
Maybe some creative b*****d was to be blamed for that one. For the things being so... so human when they could have, should have been faceless, mindless things to be mowed down and destroyed. Some were, of course. But not all of them. Some of them tried to be clever. Which was just fine for weapons, but somehow insulting for the wild freaks.

"It makes it harder, in a way," Jordan said, sobering. "It's a common psychological tactic, making your enemies into faceless monsters without personalities or emotions. It's much easier to kill a thing than a person. We can't do that, not if we accept our weapons as partners and people." He ran a thumb along Ferros's handle. "But at the same time, it reinforces why we're here. The freaks are people, but they feed on human fear and pain and on our bodies. As Hunters, we're defending our species against a predator that most humans can't even see to protect themselves from. That's our job, facing the monsters, knowing what they are, and taking them down knowing that."

"Yeah." Madison nodded, firmly. "Get them to back down, take out the ones that don't get it. The ones that kill... no mercy for them. I dunno if the thing that just jumps outta the closet, though... I mean, maybe Kouki jumped out of closets." The thought of somebody killing Kouki was repugnant.
The weapon himself was silent.
"I guess some of 'em are just doing what we thought they should. So we gotta teach 'em otherwise. Obviously that can work, right?" She gave Kouki's scabbards an affectionate pat. "I mean, I like... I kinda love Kouki. In his own way. Kind of thing."
The serpent-sword... jumped, in her mind, as if startled, then hesitantly radiated back a wordless affection of his own.

"They shouldn't be in our world," Jordan said. "They have their own place. The ones that come here to hunt are our prey."
He smiled at her statement, his thumb stroking idly along Ferros's handle. "Ferros is part of me now," he said simply.
I eat monsters, Ferros rumbled smugly.
Jordan laughed. "He says he eats monsters."

"Yeah... yeah, that sounds about right," Madison said, with a wry grin. "The part of you thing, I mean. Sometimes I worry, like, about what that means I am, but ******** it. I'm a ******** hero of humanity, that's what I am. Jumping buildings in a bound and stuff." The grin broadened, and she adopted a superhero stance.
... Not that she knew much about those. Her inexperience showed.

Jordan laughed. "I'd rather be Batman than Superman," he said. "Superman got it all handed to him. He's an alien. And Kryptonite completely ruins his day. Batman's got skills and money both. So much cooler."
He desummoned Ferros again and tucked his hand into his pockets. "Time for my caffeine fix," he said cheerfully. "Feel free to come along if you want to debate superhero merits and flaws."

"Debate? I don't need a debate, dude. I need like... an education." Okay, yeah, she was going to maybe listen to nerdy s**t. But it was over coffee with one of her best friends, so that was okay. She grinned at Jordan and followed him off, ready to learn at least a tiny bit.
