Totoma name: Bloodspoor
Personality Concept in three words or less: Efficient, irascible, harsh
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: Spoor is a tracker by nature, a feat not necessarily valued in a warrior tribe, but nonetheless useful in certain endeavors. Footprints and broken twigs are one way to exercise his skills, but anything that is still raw and bleeding makes for the easiest tracking of all. This became particularly obvious after an unusually prolonged battle between two feuding tribes, when a fellow Totoma warrior went missing. Spoor managed to track him down by following a faint trail in the blood-soaked earth, successfully separating otherwise indistinguishable droplets amidst the greater spatters. Upon locating the injured buck, he ignored any wisps of praise and returned to his relative seclusion, awaiting the next feud. To this day, few approach him unless they expect a tongue-lashing to accompany his aid.

Totoma name: Ever-Vigil
Personality Concept in three words or less: Observant, collected, unsentimental
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: Never one to shy away from the gorier parts of battle, a younger Vigil kept to the side of her grievously injured brother following an ill-matched skirmish. After sustaining a debilitating wound, his death proved embarrassingly protracted. Standing stoic through his rages and despairs, Vigil waited for her brother to accept his fate. When he eventually did, she was there to supply him with quick, face-saving means to an end. While some would accuse her of being a soft-touch in this instance, it was clear that her presence provided cold comfort to her sibling, and merely regarded as a duty required of her. However, the doe's vigilance and ability to maintain an unbothered demeanor in the face of familial death earned her a reputation, and a name.

Totoma name: Stormslick
Personality Concept in three words or less: Loyal but dependent
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: Head tilted down against the driving rain, the little one focused on her parents' hooves directly in front of her and worked to keep her balance. Her thick fur had soaked through half a mile ago, chilling her, but obviously stopping here would hardly solve anything. She envied her elders for their size; it felt like the gale was trying to throw her from the trail up the cliffside. A few more steps and she ventured to raise her head. As she did so, a sudden flash of lightning snaked across the sky, and she saw her face for the first time, reflected in the sheet of water pouring down the cliff face beside her. The father laughed at his little girl, transfixed by the illuminated image of her reflection, and told her, "You do not fear the height, or the rain, or the wind, but only yourself? ... A good start, perhaps, daughter."

Totoma name: Undeniable
Personality Concept in three words or less: Impressively headstrong
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
She had suffered the misfortune of losing her mother before she could truly stand on her own, and though she managed to survive, her body was forever stunted due to both the hardships it had endured and simple malnutrition. She was no great hunter, tracker, or singer, and to her it seemed as if she were doomed to a life or useless, and a death of nameless disgrace. The other Totoma she encountered all but refused to acknowledge her very existence. At a great meeting of her kin, not a one seemed to have time for her.
Climbing her way up a pile of slag onto a small cliff, she began to scream. “I exist!” she cried. A few heads turned, but quickly lost interest. She didn’t stop. “I exist! I exist! I exist!” For three days and two nights, she continued to cry out to them, pausing only to take a mouthful of snow when the blood in her overused throat became too much to bear. On the third night, she collapsed, and her limp body tumbled down the slag heap. When she awoke the next morning, she looked about her in humiliation and despair. “I exi-!”
An elder cut her off. “Undeniably,” he said.

Totoma name: Hears Other Voices
Personality Concept in three words or less: Delusional or clairaudient
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
(Told in the form of a Cree naming poem)
His name tells of how it was with him
There were nights when it was silent to our ears
He would go away from us
Stand, sit, or fall back
And for a time, there would be no sound
Then, he would speak
(Or if he suspected he was not alone, whisper)
Back to the voices he swore he heard
Not voices like ours, he said
They shone like moonbeams on icicles
They quenched like cool water in burning mouths
They gripped like a hunter's jaws around a rabbits neck
Some said he should be called Liar
Some would have called him Ill
Be we knew what he said was true
Just as some understood the ways of the stars
Or the animals
Or the clouds
It was not hard to believe this, too

Totoma name: Saves Lives
Personality Concept in three words or less: Knowledgeable, Persistent, Gruff
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: When she speaks, everyone listens. When she gives orders, no one questions them. The most fearsome warriors know to be respectful in her company, and yet, she is not a warrior herself. She is not a leader of fighters, raiders, or any of the tougher Totoma of her tribe. She is a healer. She was never as physically strong or fast as her fellow kin, growing up, and she knew it. When she started getting an interest in plants of all things, she was often scorned. But while the others were off fighting, she was secretly learning. Learning what roots, or leaves, or bark, were good for what, even if it meant testing them on her own self-inflicted wounds. And when the day came that their greatest warrior came back to them gravely wounded, she butted through the crowd gathering around him, and showed them what she could do. He survived his injuries, and so has everyone else she has helped since.

Totoma name: Bloody Maw
Personality Concept in three words or less: Intimidating, Fearless, Spontaneous
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: The battle had been raging all day. Neither side wanted to back down from the other, and most fights took a broken limb or loss of consciousness for a victor to emerge. It was thus that he stood over his fallen foe, crumpled into a heap at the base of an ancient tree he'd been rammed into. Although the rival was still alive, blood seeped from several wounds inflicted in the battle. It was then he had an idea. The next thing the enemy knew, a bizarre sight was practically stampeding towards them. Blood covered his entire muzzle and bared teeth, a crazed expression plastered on his face as he appeared to look for his next victim. Unnerved, several of the rival clan fled before his seemingly cannibalistic appearance. Distraction took care of the rest, and his tribe won the day thanks to his bloody maw.

Totoma name: Storm Intensity
Personality Concept in three words or less: determined, steady
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

The nameless one had been considered the weaker between him and his brother since birth. But this time he was determined to change that. He was every bit as strong as his sibling, and yet he was still nameless. He would not allow that to plague him further, he would change his fate. And he had set out to do just that. But in his haste, the totoma hadn't paid attention to the warning signs of the oncoming storm, that it would be upon him as soon as it was. Others dashed off to caves for shelter, and he wanted to, oh how he wanted to. But determination held him steadfast. With the wind howling and whipping through the rocks, and driving snow at an angle so hard it stung, he refused to turn back. He would not back down. The totoma stood his ground through the storms intensity, facing into the wind and bracing himself against it. Soon it was the storm who faced defeat, proved to be weaker and backed down. And in the aftermath, he had his name. Storm Intensity.

Totoma name: Dirt Licker
Personality Concept in three words or less: Simple, stubborn, and slow.
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

With a home-territory primarily covered in snow and ice, such earthy-things as grass and dirt were rarely seen by the Totoma. Until they ventured south, anyway. The climate changed subtly with each careful hoof-fall, shoots of bright green bursting through sun-weakened patches of splotchy, dirty snow causing a ripple of hushed exclamation back through the herd. Farther and farther they went until the lead Totoma stopped without warning. Each member of the travelling herd collided with the beast in front of them, sending tempers flaring- what was the meaning of this? Shouldn't they continue on? But there was something incredible in their way; a startlingly vibrant flower, alone in a wide patch of dirt. They'd never seen anything like it before! Well, one particularly swarthy buck shouldered and headbutted his way to the front of the procession to see just what was the holdup... and with utter disregard for the flower, licked the dirt.

Totoma name: stood Long
Personality Concept in three words or less: Protective, quiet, steadfast
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: The child had been born and left. She knew not who had bore it and nor did she care. All that mattered was that it was nameless, new, and weak. She disliked weak things but more than that she hated watching life go wasted. So she stood over the new-one. If a creature scurried past she would stomp on it and feed it to the child. She pulled the mountain grasses up around her to form a bed and more feed for the young one. At night, when things would think to prey on her new charge she would fight those things off without ever once stepping away from the foal beneath her. At great cost to herself she kept it safe until she deemed it ready to face it's own fates. She looked at it. It looked at her. With a nod the not-so-new child nodded and said two words- "Stood Long."
Then it was gone, and she could at last sleep.

Totoma name: Striking Stone
Personality Concept in three words or less: Confident, Competitive, Strong
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: Striking likes the sound of his horns on the stone on the mountain.
CLACK
It was his stone, the stone he'd pick out when he was young, where he would learn to be strong. When he was powerful enough to defeat the stone, he would be powerful enough to do anything.
CLACK
His horns struck loudly on his rock. The sound echoed in the air, reverberated in his ears. It was the sound of power. The louder the sound, the greater the power.
CLACK
He liked power. He was confident that his power would be the greatest. He would be able to woo any doe, conquer any territory, defeat any foe!
CLACK
A tiny bit of stone broke off and flew through the air. Striking grinned.
He was winning.

Totoma name: Wolf Skull
Personality Concept in three words or less: Stoic, Proud, Hostile
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

In the long winter when the deer are scarce, sometimes the wolves turn to the Totoma for prey. And sometimes, in the long winter, the Totoma and the wolves fight in the snowbound land. Totoma are formidable opponents, dangerous ones too. But desperation drives wolves to do crazy things. And though strong and hardy, wolves travel in packs and Totoma travel alone.

Once, a nameless buck as white as snow was attacked by a wolf pack. It is said that he slayed three wolves, injured two and scattered the pack. The blood stained his fur and horns so deeply, nothing could wash it out. And the territory that he marked as his own, the borders are said to be marked the the skulls of wolves.

Totoma name: Wields-the-Cliffside
Personality Concept in three words or less: Intelligent, Patient, Stolid
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: Later, the story would be told again and again, the details of it exaggerated to near-mythical proportions. Later, those that met him would hear his name and wonder how such a stolid, level-headed fellow he came upon it. He was intelligent, to be sure, and as brave as any Totoma, but he was not the fiercest or the best of hunters. The moment of naming is a single, immortal fragment of time, however, and in that one moment, when he stood between the cliff and the cave bear, the pressure of circumstance forced his name from his soul. When it was all over, the bear lay broken at the bottom of the cliff, slain by a precise application of force and a long fall, and the newly-named Wields-the-Cliffside stood on the edge, panting, exhausted, his hide marked by deep gouges from the desperate battle. All could agree that, while he did not survive the battle unscathed, and would carry the scars of the struggle for the rest of his life, the point was that he did survive.

Totoma name: Speaks Once
Personality Concept in three words or less: Laconic, reliable, practical
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
Speaks Once came by hir name late in life, having seemed perfectly content with being Nameless. Some wondered at hir silence and lack of ambition. Others wondered if the Nameless totoma was mute or slow. But instead, it seemed that they were saving themselves up for one opportune moment -- and it came on the journey to the swamp, when others, tired from the journey, nearly blundered unknowingly into a river full of caiman. The only thing Speaks Once has been known to say out loud is "Stop" -- but it saved more than one life.

Totoma name: Three Nights
Personality Concept in three words or less: resourceful, patient, serious
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: The totoma’s tribe moved often, and one such time occurred as the totoma matured from an awkward but hardy youth to an adult. The tribe moved as a group and did not stop for stragglers, because they were a tribe of strong totoma. So it was that when the totoma slipped down the slope of the mountain, having neglected (for once) to properly seek its footing, no member of the tribe turned to help. Instead, they all took care to avoid the particular patch of unstable pebbles the totoma had failed to notice, and assumed that the totoma would seek out a life alone. The totoma spent that night in a cave, and felt very much alone. The next morning the totoma discovered that the cave was very near to the den of a bear, which quickly became enraged at the totoma’s proximity. So the totoma ran, heading in the direction of the tribe’s hoofprints (luckily, it had not snowed in the night, and the tribe was large enough that their hoofprints were recognizeable). The second night, the totoma pushed together some rocks and slept between them for shelter. In the morning the totoma foraged – the totoma had not eaten the previous day, and felt too weak to hunt. The totoma ate sturdy, filling roots and took nothing more when the totoma felt full – more food could be found. On the third night, the totoma dug a hole in the snow and burrowed for sleep. In the morning the totoma hunted, and at midday, the totoma found the place where the tribe had settled. The totoma spent the fourth night sharing the spoils of the hunt and relishing in the name that the totoma had, finally, earned.

Totoma name: Pathfinder
Personality Concept in three words or less: Impulsive, curious, thrillseeker
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

Her small group had left for that fabled Swamp days ago, almost instinctively knowing where to go, even though their path took them into lands unfamiliar. One night, blind from a sudden snowstorm, the group had stumbled almost over the edge of a treacherous crevasse. It went on for as far as they could see in either direction. They knew they could not go around, and the only way across was the thinnest of ice bridges. The doe, being the lightest of the small group, volunteered. She made it almost halfway before the ice began to give. Laughing with that strange joy born of danger, she bunched her hind legs and leaped mightily to the other side, just as the bridge collapsed. Unwilling to leave her companions behind, she found another way: a tall pine grew near the edge, dead and scoured by wind but still sturdy. She threw her weight against it until the roots gave way and it fell to bridge the crevasse; a precarious path, but enough to see them all safely across.
It was then they called her Pathfinder.
