Royce could not help but smile fondly at Abby while she thought. Her tapping and the pensive look on her face was very endearing. It was an interesting difference compared to the easy-going grin she had worn during most of this meeting. Royce was amused to see that she could also be serious.

He was alert once more as she snapped back to him. "It's not like I expected you to know magic," Royce said with a kind chuckle. "But thank you for even thinking about helping me. You're very kind."

Royce laughed as she talked about her friend. "Hmm.. Too bad about that. I would have liked to at least asked..." He stared at the table while sighing. "After I realized something had happened to me, I tried to research an antidote, but most of the books I could find in libraries were just superstitions or wives' tales. I wish I could find an authority in magic without having to risk further injury." He shook his head and looked back up, smiling a bit ashamedly. "I'm sorry; I allowed the topic to turn downcast."

A frown crossed Abby's face as her eyes met with Royce's. The expression didn't appear to be directed at him, nor did it seem to be frustrated or angry or thoughtful. Rather, it seemed to convey a serious sincerity, as though Royce had said something that hit on a core belief, something solid and exempt from Abby's usual eccentric approach to life.

"You're sorry? This is something that's troubling you, right? I can't just go, "Oh, I see," and switch the topic cause it seems downcast!" Abby wrinkled her nose, deepening the frown a touch. "I'd be ashamed to call myself your friend if I didn't at least try to help. I mean if I give it my all and still fail that's one thing, but to not make any kind of effort at all?"

Abby's derisive snort spoke volumes about her opinion of such people. She leaned back in her seat, relaxing the muscles around her shoulders and wings as her expression smoothed back out.

"I'll keep an eye out for my friend and see if he has anything to say. His magic works through charms and potions and such, so maybe he can at least give you a solid direction to work in if nothing else."

A smile pulled at her lips. "Now I'm probably the one making the coversation odd. Ah well, at least that's nothing new," she chuckled.

[[Sorry it took me so long. Life decided to take away most of my muses' strength.]]

He could not help but wince at the look she gave him. Though he did not feel like she was angry at him, Royce felt like he had said something wrong. He got that a there was a matter that offended Abby, but he could not think of what.

Her words quickly answer Royce's unspoken question. It was no use for him to attempt to hide his happy smile and blush. He wasn't sure if Abby had meant to, but she had called him a friend. It had been a while since he had had a friend. At least ones that still considered themselves friends after Royce's 'curse'.

"Thank you, again, Abby." Royce smiled wider as Abby settled down. "No worries," he said quietly, shaking his head, "you've actually made me happy, again." Royce scoffed at himself. "It's funny: I seem to have no idea what to say, while you continue to say exactly the right things." He glanced at Abby, his blush still ever so slightly apparent, "I'm glad I met you and that you're my friend."

((It's all good : ) Honestly wasn't such a large gap between replies; I've seen longer waits XD))

For a split second, Abby's expression gentled into a soft look. It seemed to be a subconscious reflex, one of those "if you blinked you'd have missed it" things, for the look had hardly settled onto her face when an impish smile took over.

"Me, say the right things? Nonsense sir! I pride myself on my ability to cause chaos and awkward situations in five sentences or less!

Or five actions or less," she added, after a moment of thought. "Cause some people find me annoying but can still tolerate me until I invade their personal space. Speaking of..."

Abby leaned across the table and pressed her paw against one of Royce's cheeks, then pulled back with a chuckle. "You appear to be blushing. Not profusely, mind you, but I can still feel the increase in your temperature." The impish smile returned as her eyes glittered with playful mischief. "Well, let's hope you really do feel glad you met me. Otherwise this is gonna start to feel like torment, and I'm pretty good at that as well if I do say so myself."

[[ I bet this is now the longest wait. lol. ugh. ]]

Royce had noticed a softening in Abby's expression, but it was gone so quick, he was sure he had imagined it. Especially when her next words were rebuking his compliment. Royce couldn't help but chuckle. The girl was so sure that she was annoying, yet Royce had yet to feel that about her. He found Abby's presence comforting as it kept him out of his own mind and worries. She had even offered to help him with his curse. How could he find someone kind like that annoying?

Suddenly Abby's paw was against his cheek and Royce stiffened. It wasn't like he wasn't used to physical contact-- the bakery was full of affectionate bakers-- but he had not been expecting the touch. His mind went blank for a while, waiting to catch up with her words. When he realized the reason she had felt his cheek, he reached his own paw up. Yep, he was blushing.

"I think it was your words that warmed me." Royce shut his eyes quickly, lowering his paw as he did so. "That was embarrassing," he muttered. "Honestly, I haven't felt more comfortable with a person since I met the owner of this place." Royce hoped he wasn't scaring Abby away. The words just wouldn't stop tumbling out.

((XD Nope, actually. I had a roleplay that was two days short of being a whole year since its last tag!))

Abby just chuckled, the cheerful sound filling the space between them. "Don't feel too bad about it. I'm also a pro at embarassing people; bad habit, I know, but it's kinda funny to see self-conscious reactions. They're honest and usually enlighting!"

And almost always entertaining, even more so than irritation. Making people blush was one of her favorite past-times; extra points if the person wasn't an easy blusher and if she used subtly rather than overt actions or words.

"I'm actually having a fun time too," she plowed on, flashing Royce a smile. "I guess this conversation could be called normal for me since I usually slip in stuff like moon cheese and dew drop fish. Extra points for creativity, ya know? But I think I got in a couple shots earlier, and aside from one or two puzzled looks you seem to think I'm more interesting than insane or annoying." She chuckled merrily. "I cannot tell you how many people think that. Usually why my few friends are pretty weird themselves."

Hmmmm, if her friends were weird and she considered Royce a friend, did that make Royce weird? Well there was that truth thing, but that was more sucky and a bad break rather than a true weirdness. Maybe she could file it under odd quirk? Except it wasn't natural, so probably she should create a sub-category. Herb-induced, kinda sucky, involuntary quirk might work, though probably wouldn't get a lot of listings. Then again....

"Anyway, glad we get along," she said, resting her chin on a paw and grinning again. "Cause now that I know you and know you work here, I might totally make myself a pest and have to visit more frequently. I should probably start saving up so I can buy something every now and then, before this owner person pitches me out on my fluffy little bum for taking up table space!"

"That's good to know," Royce said. He was smiling easily now, assured that she wasn't uncomfortable with him. "I've found that thanks to my brother I tend to say some embarrassing things these days. Usually I try to ignore how honest I'm being and play it off as a joke. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't."

Royce nodded along as Abby agreed with his earlier statement. He couldn't help but grin as he recalled her occasional interjections seemingly from left field. "I think I'm starting to get the hang of your conversation style," he commented with a chuckle. "Perhaps that makes me weird as well?"

The young baker laughed again as Abby commented on his new role in her life. "I might just welcome your interruptions. It would give me something to look forward to." Royce scoffed a bit before assuaging Abby's worry. "I don't think you'll have to worry too much about being kicked out. Mr. Bel is a big softy." Just in case that didn't work, he tacked on more words. "But you could always share my occasional break meal with me again. It comes out of my pay anyways, even if I don't eat the whole pastry."

"Careful-," Abby warned Royce, "-or I'll take you up on that and you'll find yourself wondering where your break food is vanished to!"

Heh, break food. Yet another odd saying when put into a sentence. What kind of food would break food be, she wondered. Stuff that broke easily? So eggs would totally be on the list. Maybe watermelon, cause some of those broke pretty easy if you dropped them.

"I wonder what an egg and watermelon dish would taste like," she mused quietly, unaware she'd spoken aloud. She shook herself free of her distracting thoughts again and refocused on Royce.

"Gotta agree that fresh-baked it always best, though I don't see you letting any of your food going to waste even if you do claim you can't eat the whole serving in one go." She smiled, and let her gratitude show through to him. "I'll try not to take advantage of your good nature too often! I'm a sucker for fresh breads, I'll totally admitt, but I don't want to steal all your treats away."

Royce shrugged. His smile was carefree as he spoke. "No worry about that; a good meal is even better with good company."

Royce was caught off guard by Abby's contemplative statement. By the look on her face she was talking to herself, but Royce wondered if there was a pastry that involved watermelon. Perhaps there was a pie or tart.

Finally Abby somewhat agreed to Royce's offer. It wasn't an outright "yes" but it was good enough for him. He beamed at his friend. "The bakery tends to encourage large serving sizes that even on a good day my stomach can't handle completely." Noticing he had one bite left of his roll, he quickly popped in his mouth before continuing. "Maybe I'll have you try new recipes, then. You'll still get to partake in any tried-and-true treats I eat during my down time, but you'd be of use. That way you don't have to feel like you're taking advantage of me." He smiled with a glint of friendly mischief in his eye.

Abby preened a bit in delight at the thought. She'd be able to try new stuff that potentially wasn't even served in the bakery yet? And all made by a guy who actually knew how to bake? Okay sure, that meant she might get some recipes that could be thought of as duds, but Abby doubted Royce would ever make something that tasted bad. Even plain stuff was a bonus since you could have fun making up inventive ways to improve it.

Heck, given her extensive knowledge of plant tastes from so often eating raw and the best combos (at least to her), she might even be able to be of use in some experiments. The thought of being able to have a hand in making something delicious pratcially had her squirming in a fit of giddiness!

"That sounds like it'll be more fun that...well, most of the stuff I do," she enthused. Normally she'd have added in something more colorful, like hunting for mist metals or chasing fire sprites, and then elaborate on it, but for some reason Abby felt averse to making up her usual crazy stories. They were exactly lies, and goodness knows she'd still slip out plenty of weird in her conversations, but it felt wrong somehow. If Royce couldn't lie to her, then she wasn't going to lie to him!

"Oh, what topics should I avoid asking you about," she suddenly asked, her train of thought making her curious. She tried to remember what Royce had told her about his curse so far, and felt compelled to add, "Generally stuff, no specifics." There, hopefully that would be enough so that he didn't have to spill more secrets. She had insatiable curiousity and normally would have pried, but it was like everything was opposite with Royce. Since he had to tell the truth, she didn't want him to tell her anything that he didn't bring up himself!

((Whelp! 'S official! She really really likes him XD))

Royce waited patiently while his friend seemingly debated his offer. It looked like Abby was seriously considering it, but Royce had learned quickly through this encounter not to try to guess what the unconventional fox was thinking. Instead he sipped at what remained of his cocoa and made a mental note to make two cups next time. If Abby agreed, that is. Royce roughly swallowed the strong chocolate beverage, his nerves tightening his throat at the prospect of her turning him down.

He could see Abby squirming now. Was it in discomfort? Was she trying to think of a way to turn him-- Wait. She agreed... Bluntly, but she agreed. "Great," Royce said. He let out the breath he hadn't realized he had held before smiling. "I look forward to 'working' with you, then," he enthused.

"Oh," Royce said, a bit shocked. Abby had once again surprised him. "Thank you for being considerate," Royce started, his brow furrowing with thought and also confusion. He chuckled as she amended her statement, glad she realized how his words could have gone.

"I suppose we best not talk about my brother for now." Royce smiled half-heartedly with a shrug. "Also, I'd rather not discuss my parents." Absent-mindedly, Royce bit his lower lip. He was trying to think if there was anything else he'd rather not mention, but could think of none. Abby was a friend and deserved to be trusted some. Royce smiled brightly, decidedly finished listing his boundaries, and reported, "I'm fine with anything else, though. You're a friend, after all."

"No brother, no parents," Abby repeated, nodding. "Got it."

She stretched lazily in her seat and looked past Royce to the window. The sun appeared to have creeped further up in the sky and managed to peek out of the clouds. It still looked a little damp, but not quite as cold.

"Well, guess you gotta go back to makin' all that delicious stuff soon, else you'll run out and get a hoard of people crowding you, demanding more goodies. I'd have to swoop in to save you, but since I'm not the heroine type that might just make things worse!" She twitched her wings on her back. "Ah well, I'd rather be an imp than an angel," she said, grinning and standing up from her table.

She walked over to the bakery door and turned. "See ya later, bread baker!" She gave Royce a wink and salute, then turned and vanished through the door, weaving her way gracefully through the crowd and disappearing from sight in mere moments.

Royce smiled fondly at Abby as she stared out the window. It was odd, he supposed, to already be so comfortable with someone, but he enjoyed it. He was back to attention as soon as Abby spoke. "Oh, right, work. My break should be about up," Royce said before blushing as she mentioned having to save him. He then chuckled. Abby certainly was something.

Royce returned her salute but was not sure she had seen. "It was great meeting you!" he called at her retreating back. He got down from the table himself, gathered his dishes, and made his way casually to behind the counter.

The rest of the day was passed with ease but, for the first time, Royce could not stop smiling.
