Reuben stared dumbfounded at a few of these 'pillars' that were recognizable at least here and there but he stopped at one particular and stared at her visage as it was frozen in a strange mask of pain and horror. He'd remembered seeing that face as he tried to come to her rescue when their mission had come too late.

Quinta had perished under a rather vicious attack it was evident that the dark haired Huntress hadn't been ready to die just based on her death masque by the time Reuben had arrived. The mission had started out fairly routine up until their target had slipped into a home of a family. Quinta had run ahead of him while Reuben dealt with a rather deep gash on his leg, though he'd asked her to wait for him but she'd been too fired up to just stick around. From where he sat he saw the family flee their home in a mix of terror and confusion and then...

A horrible scream.

In spite of his wound and any pain he felt Reuben had run into the home barreling through doors until he got to the kitchen where Quinta laid on the floor with a knife firmly in her chest and ...something standing over her. Quinta's face was ... no longer pretty as it once had been she didn't even see Reuben as she passed away. The creature turned toward him and lunged after noticing his presence and...

{Hey. Hey you. It wasn't your fault, Reub.}

"...Not my fault," Reuben muttered out loud almost sounding distant as if in a trance.

{Not at all. She went ahead of you and she shouldn'a have. Besides we got out of it alright when others arrived to help.} Kon reminded him patiently.

Reuben's face animated once more as life returned to his features. He gave a firm nod. Yes, he was sad for his partner on that mission but as Kon had said she had gone ahead when she should not have. It wasn't his fault entirely. He could have done sometime - made her stay with him but as his Great Gramma sometimes said...

Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda.

Besides the loss of one or the loss of a family which was worse in the end?

"Turn off your flashlights." The Death Hunter lead's tone was slightly stronger than his normal quiet mutter. "Turn off your flashlights until I give the signal. There is nothing here we can do for these ....apparitions. They were put here for a reason, to make them stronger, but we have seen worse." He tried to put emphasis into his words, but the 'forest' spooked himself as well. There was no other direction to go but forward now, though thankfully, they road ahead seemed clear.

Slowly, but surely, each Hunter complied, the flashlights blinking off in unison. Only the glow of Liam and Circe remained, like a beacon.

Jamisson only nodded at Gabby as she made the offer to cover the back. Before he could say more, another Hunter joined the group. A Sun hunter by the looks. He let the boy have his word with Damien before gesturing with his gun, "You, and, you as well," he pointed towards Damien as well as Spencer, "Take the sides and I'll lead with the light deal?"

Another joined them, the small party seemed to be growing, though the remark Stephen opened up with was the last thing anyone needed to hear. "Who ever the hell you are cut that s**t out. If your going to move along with us you shut the hell up and keep that kind of thought to yourself. You might have noticed Liam is a death hunter which we are as well. Your leader is possibly back dealing with the portal or organizing a proper exit from the city when we get this done."

Or he could be right, but that wasn't what he was going to focus on.

So they moved on, boots slowly wading through water that finally reached the knees. "s**t..." he worked his way through the thick water, flash light waving side to side. He pause midstep.

If you see one of you copied you shot them both in the knee till you know which is the real one dammit!

The order echoed through his mind as he stared at the pillar. Two figures back to back, both of them the two boys he had been working with not even twelve hours ago. Begging pleading towards something with the way they looked up. Was it to the monster they hunted?

Or too one another as they shot each other on his order?

He was a cold man, but even the idea that something like that had actually happened, that those two green hunters who had till then followed his every word, actually gone so far as to possibly kill one another for a mission he should have finished himself?

Liam's order came and his flash light clicked off, he looked in the shadows at his small group around him. "Gabby... Gabby you alright? Where are the rest of you, we need." He paused trying to steady his voice, had it cracked for a moment when he was looking over at that pillar of the two boys?

"We need to follow Liam. Circe will light the way, we wander off we're likely to end up no better then these folks."

When the order came, Andy managed to pull herself together a little more. Liam was with them now, and even though she cast a vaguely worried look at Caelius, she was glad to have her division leader back; just his presence gave her a sense of security. She didn't question the split-ups, though fear was gnawing at her heart still, and the fact that neither the sun nor moon division head had returned only served to make her more sure that she wasn't going to make it back, either.

Forcing a smile on her face, she waved goodbye to Gear and Profe before Caelius gave her a look, and then she followed behind him into the subway. For once she was content to walk behind- or beside, with a few hasty steps. Normally Andy would have tried to out-walk or out-run him, but she needed someone she knew by her side, even if it was someone she didn't really like. The darkness in the subway station was unsettling, but mostly because of the uncertainty. Various routes were explored, that didn't lead to anything, and even if she half-expected things to jump out at her in the darkness it felt worse that there wasn't anything around. Andy liked the enemy where she could actually see them.

Eventually Liam asked for Caelius to stay behind, to set up an exit portal. She knew it was a precaution, as opposed to preparing for the end of the mission, when they'd all go back to the island. Part of her was unwilling to leave him; the other part tried its best to convince her that Caelius was just going to miss out on the fun. She left him to his work, lingering a moment as she pondered saying goodbye, then decided she didn't want to.

Following Liam, Andy moved to hide herself within the group of hunters. There was a moment of panic when she realised Caelius had been left all alone, but then a splash under her feet dragged her back to reality. The water was dirty, with a decidedly unpleasant oily feeling, and then the smell hit her and she coughed, bringing her hand up to cover her nose.

The smell, though, was nowhere near as bad as what she saw next: hunters. Dead hunters were by no means a rare sight; Andy had seen her share of failed missions and tragedies, but even as she heard Liam tell them to move on she found she couldn't move. There were dead people, and then there was this- a mockery of their deaths, somehow, the way they were arranged like in some kind of twisted 'art' gallery.

She couldn't look front, or back, or to either side, or up, so Andy wrenched her gaze away from the haunting faces and stared down at the water. One by one the flashlights blinked off, at Liam's command again, until only Circe's blue glow illuminated the tunnel.

Andy took a deep breath. With nowhere to go but forwards, she just hoped she wouldn't accidentally crash into one of the pillars.

Then the headsets went dead.

Oh this was getting so much better.

So. Much. Better.

He followed Liam silently and let Circe guide the way. Wolf kept quiet, alert for anything that could jump out at them.

Jess, keeping back to back with Dave as they went along past the... trees of death. Still tensed up despite his warning. What the hell was this? She rolled her eyes back and closed them. It was just a trick. That's what.

She kept them closed despite what she might feel in case they accidentally brushed past one. Closed tight. She was normally stronger than this... but it was everything. From how tense Dave felt to the fact it was actual past hunters. It was a warning. A warning of what was to come.

This feeling was only compounded as the light she could see through her eyelids faded into darkness. Nothingness and even contact turned to static. Her grip on Dave's stump tightened drastically.

"S-s-sir? I would like to sing now, please." She said it with earnest. If nothing else was going to ease her nerves, it was going to be Dave's horrible off-key rendition of auld lang syne. She needed it. But she wasn't going to tell him that just this moment.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Two more Hunters joined their ranks, two more quick nods to acknowledge them before Gabby resumed her focus. Stephen's response to Aaron's question was met with an angry growl from Jamisson, something Gabby found rather surprising. Her own reaction to the blunt reminder was to push away the anxiety and bury the desire to request for him to only provide relevant information. But there was no sense in such an outburst. If she survived this mission, she'll have plenty of time to vent. So instead she sighed and gave Aaron a reassuring pat on his shoulder and Stephen a soft, "We'll keep that in mind."

The further they went, the harder it was to see and move forward. Every now and again she'd check to see how Damien was doing. She didn't know if she liked having their little group grow to this much.

The smell hit her first, so potent she almost doubled over to throw up. It was only because she managed to grab onto Jamisson's arm that she stopped herself and swallowed the bile rising in the back of her throat. When she turned to see what it was that was making such a stench, she paled visibly and the threat to vomit came up again.

"Lando..." the name was softly uttered from her mouth before she even realized it. He'd been in the same batch of rookies as she was. They were the same age and he'd been outgoing and funny and so sure they were all going to make it through each and every mission. And when it came to their very first mission, she watched her leader order the team to abandon him to die.

The hand holding onto Jamisson tightened without thinking as the light from the flashlight shone into her face. "I-I'm here," she whispered, furiously blinking back tears. How the hell did this forest even get here?

She nodded, not trusting herself to speak. Push down. Push back. Stamp down. Move forward. Keep moving forward. Don't think about it now. You can't afford to. She reminded herself and unconsciously stayed closer to Jamisson than she would have normally allowed.

"Alright" He said to Jamisson, before listening to Gabby's commands. If she wanted him to be at the front, he was only to happy to do so. The shadows were encroaching on them, and being one of the few FEAR hunters, it was his job to protect everyone else.

Then, a few more people showed up, including that boy he had met in the dorms, Aaron. He hadn't seen him since then, and it was good to see someone from his own division. But he had asked a question that he did not feel comfortable answering just yet. Though he needn't had worried; Stephen had answered it for him, although very bluntly.

He was hoping, secretly, that Jamisson was right. Ferdinand may have spent his time shouting at him to get his sorry a** moving, barking commands and appearing like he didn't give a s**t, he still respected his leader greatly. He couldn't imagine the guy ever going down, not to the likes of those vermin.

Suddenly, his found himself stepping through knee high water. Damien looked around, his gun raised and ready to start taking down anything that wasn't human, but had to pause as the smell hit his nostrils, and he gagged momentarily. Up ahead were some strange pillars, and once he was close enough he was able to see what they were. Hunters. Dead hunters at that. It was a gruesome sight, but he had seen many a dead hunter in his life, so he moved on.

That was until he came to another set of columns. He stopped, forgetting that he was part of well constructed team and that he should have been moving. He couldn't move, couldn't just ignore who was there. He knew they were dead, that it was sick trick, but he still stopped and stared at the friend he had lost so long ago.

~~

"Somehow, we're gonna make it through this"

"How? How can we?! We're surrounded! everyones dead, except us! Tell me Jack, how in ******** name are we gonna survive?!"

He placed a hand on his clearly panicking friends shoulder, shaking him lightly. "Snap out of it! You'll be fine Damien, You'll be just fine."

The younger sun hunter tried to remain calm. Tried to hide the tears that were streaming down his face. "But what about..."

"Listen. Just follow my lead. I'll make a path for you, and you can escape."

"No, NO! I can't do that, I can't leave you behind!!" Damien shouted"

"Don't worry, I'll follow you out once I've taken care of things. Then once we're out of here, we'll get ourselves a drink. It'll be my shout.

"You still owe me that drink" He quietly said to the statue.

Whatever little teary-eyedness Zoey had went away swiftly upon hearing that familiar Southern drawl. "Finally!" she cried, once again holding the lit torch away as she one-arm hugged Cliff as best she could. "Both you guys know this's the one time you're allowed to follow the light in the tunnel, got it?" She gave them her Serious Look before motioning them with her torch to keep up with the group before they got separated.

It wasn't long before Zoey began to hear the noise: drip. drip. drip. She was hit with a small wave of nostalgia: three weeks of her life in a boarding school had dealt with a leaking faucet that facilities could not get to for the longest time. During that time she and her roommate, Regina, would sit and complain to each other about stupid girl drama, or about this teacher or that, or how Regina felt about their sexually ambiguous theater guy friend -

- Slosh. Slosh. Slosh went her feet. And then she saw the bodies.

It took all Zoey could not to puke, her gag reflex making her bend over a bit as she covered her mouth with a free hand; ranch dressing was rancid coming up her throat, but she managed to swallow it back down. These were . . . These were faces she knew.

Fredrick Littleton, a Mist division Runic like her who had been awakened around the same time she did, a young man who had skipped college to join what he thought was the best equivalent of the Marines ever. A scratched humerus bone poked out of his shoulder, compliments from the werewolf who had torn half his arm out and raked his body with long claws to get as much meat off him as possible.

Gracie Wright and her boyfriend Diedrich McAllister, Sun FEAR and Moon Runic, a pair full of more love-hate relationship than actual affection. Zoey had seen them before they departed on a mission to defend one of the outposts. Now she saw their final moment: Gracie on her left, two puncture wounds in her neck, her curvaceous body drained dry until Zoey could see the network of ribs in her chest, her short sword uselessly at her feet; Diedrich opposite on the right, a hand outstretched pleadingly, his eyes wide with fear as he attempted to pull out bandages to save his girl: no physical evidence showed what had killed him, leaving her to assume some sort of poisonous gas.

Trudy Zimmerman, fellow Death Hunter and mother figure; gaping hole in her chest. Gregory Caesar, Life Hunter with a familiar face and terrible ache; neck twisted almost all the way around. Quintin Ange, musclehead Mist Hunter who yelled more than spoke; lower body crushed and mangled by something large, innards splayed beneath him.

The more Zoey stared at familiar and stranger faces, the less will power she had to hold down her food. It was one thing to hear stories or only witness deaths happen right in front of you - it was something else entirely to enter a claustrophobic area, cold and wet, already jittery with nerves, and see the flickering shadows dashed across the menagerie of the macabre.

Before she could look away from the quiet mayhem surrounding them, the Death Hunter laid eyes on the one body she most certainly did not want to see. Nícolas San Romano, he of the incredibly stupid mustache, hiding behind a boulder and motioning her to combat roll to him before they were attacked again -

- the mustache was gone, the thick eyebrows gone, the smile gone -

- "Oy, por la amore de Dios!" Over the rock he aimed, BAM went his hand cannon, a monstrous shriek rewarding his efforts. A snicker, a gleam in his eye she didn't like as she approached. "b*****d's wing is clipped I think. How you doin'?" -

- the lips were shriveled, ghastly teeth grinning humorlessly at her horrified face -

- "F-Fine. Nick, Ferdinand said to fall back -"
"Ya ya, I heard Red Eyes. Just one more shot and the lizard won't fly again." "Nick, you can't! It's not worth it, we're both already in bad shape. C'mon, let's g-"
And then he gave that stupid grin that melted her as his wounds continued to bleed out; he could barely move an arm, it had so much blood pumping out. She moved to take out her bandages, but he stopped her -

- and now his face was the one that had melted, blisters carved into the stone representation with horrid detail. Cracks in his skin, his blood vessels boiling, his abdomen bulging as his organs began to fail and swell under the heat -

- She stared at him, finally registering that strange gleam in his eye. The dragon roared a challenge above the drum of war, but she could nothing but stare. And then glare. "You IDIOT," she hissed, throwing her bandages at him. "You can't play hero in something like this."
"I know."
"There're no medals, no funerals, not even goddamn gravestones!"
"I know."
"You . . . Romano, you ******** moron!!" She hated him that very moment, hating that he was being so stubborn, hating that they were Hunters, hating that she could fear the sting of tears.
"I know." So calm, and yet still so cheeky. Nícolas looked so gaunt, and yet he found the strength to move still. He put two fingers to his lips -

- She put two fingers to her lips -

- and planted them on her cheek -

- and doubled over as another strong wave of nausea and nostalgia hit her, barely restraining the sick from coming out.

Even if Liam hadn't told them to shut off the lights, Zoey would have. Wrenching her eyes away from the miserable sight, she focused onto Circe's blue glow and slowly waded forward to follow, looking quite pale and shaky herself.

Her burns, as if reacting to the fake pillars, began to itch and tingle.

Someone wanted to sing. Zoey chose to pray instead in a mumbly voice that nonetheless seemed to carry in the forever dark and damp.

"O-Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven . . ."

Pray for the fallen. Pray for the still fighting. It was the least they deserved as unsung heroes.

((Apologies for long-a** post x~x Anyone is free to comment on said praying and/or relate to randomly listed Hunters from said long-a** post.))

Stephen's words were met by a sharp glare, but before he could respond, Jamisson suddenly cut in. Gritting his teeth, Aaron allowed the man to speak for him before he promptly tore his gaze away, letting it fall to the ground. While he was not going to delude himself and pretend that the possibility Ferdinand had died wasn't there, he didn't want to dwell on the matter either. "Just need to focus on the present, right?" He grumbled, maybe more so to himself than any of the others.

For a while, he followed the group, though he unconsciously began to distance himself from them as they walked. Every few steps, he'd find that he had moved farther away from them. While Rina was complaining in his mind--she thought it would be a better idea for him to stick to people for a change--Aaron was personally starting to feel a little stifled.

And then, of course, all of these worries were promptly shoved out of the window when the Hunters suddenly found themselves standing amongst a forest of corpses.

Despite his boasts about how calm and collected he usually was, even Aaron could not hide the absolute horror that filled him. Some of those bodies, their faces...he knew them. Not personally, or on a level deeper than an acquaintance, but it was still extremely unsettling. He could recall having exchanged words with them on numerous occasions. He remembered their laughing faces...

He clearly wasn't the only one who recognized any of these people either. He looked over towards Damien as he caught the man's quiet words.

"...I'm going on ahead." The proclamation was sudden as Aaron tried to push through whoever was standing in front of him. He wanted to get out of here.

And then there was darkness. And the only guiding light was faintly blue and hardly a light at all. It was like they were no longer on earth, the damp rotten air and the slosh of water underfoot. The sounds of wading knee deep in water removed any element of surprise he found but at least it obscured their numbers. Not that it mattered, he doubted whatever waited for him here gave a damn about numbers, they were walking in here to get a relic, they were expected, they had to be. But they were backed right into a corner, they were here because they had no choice.

Be strong

Jess's grip on his arm was soothing and he realised from the firmness of it that she was really feeling the tension down here. Even moreso when she asked to do something she /never/ did without some real coaxing. He didn't think singing would go down very well if it was loud and disruptive, but keeping his eyes on the scythe, their only beacon in this hellish nightmare, he very very quietly, of a volume toned out by the trudging feet of their comrades in front, but audible to Jess, sung the only song he could think of in the moment, a song he remembered from his childhood football fan days. An easy song to mostly talk rather than sing.

When you walk through the storm, hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

He stumbled for a moment, Gabby was on his arm and he was almost startled by the sudden touch before his gut twisted in knots watching the poor girl get sick. She was looking at him, she could see the tears and gently squeezed her hand. "C'mon Gabby it will be alright we just have to keep moving."

Slowly he tugged her forward helping her before reaching out to tap Damien on the shoulder with the butt of his gun. "Get it together.... you can argue drinks with him when your dead, right now we have to keep going or we'll be left behind."

Next was Arron, he might have cut in sharply but he didn't want to think, to think that one of the leaders were dead. Still he had the right idea when he muttered to himself and they continued to move. That was till Arron moved ahead, "Find another group! If you go alone your going to get yourself picked off!"

A blur. Everything was a blur and there was no way that Remy could keep track of what was going on. She damned herself for a brief moment - she'd never had to deal with these feelings. It was as if she'd been placed into an upside down glass, watching things happen and yet unable to help. It wasn't fear that kept her stationary, and there really was no other way to explain the dazed way that Remy had watched things pass her by.

By herself.

She preferred it this way. It was easier to deal with whatever was happening. Alone, and never held responsible for anyone but herself. If she died -- no, when she died -- it would be because she had failed. She couldn't blame it on anyone else. The end was always there, and it was never and 'if', just a 'when'. Despite the hardened exterior, despite the feelings that she kept locked down and under wraps, Remy had never been strong. She'd tried, pretended, but in the end - in her end - well, some things always stay the same.

When the chatter on the headset dimmed, all Remy could do was follow the lead of those around her. If there was one thing that could be said about Jeremy Sloane when faced with imminent doom and the grotesque figures of her dead comrades, it would be that she took it with a stoic demeanor. Just the way she took everything else in her life.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 14, 2012 7:31 pm

She quietly listened at first. Not really knowing the lyrics herself enough to join in properly singing, but still. She tried to softly hum to the beat of his talk-singing part way in. At the very least, the song was serving its purpose. Her heart was high and her stomach unknotted. It put her at ease and after he seemed finished, she tried repeating the final line herself.

"you'll never walk alone." It was true to their situation at least. Terribly.

She slid her eyes open again. Numbed to anything that may be faintly revealed in the darkness by Circe. It didn't matter right now. She wasn't alone. She wasn't the only one freezing her a** off in this disgusting muck. Not the only one in this darkness facing these horrors. She was not alone.

"Thank you sir. I'd ask for another... but I'm sure you'd tuct tape my mouth shut to keep me quiet..." A good sign she was at ease again. She was back to bantering again despite the odds.

He wasn't scared of the dark and thus his flashlight went out and he let the 'leader' light the way with their weapon. Amongst the glow he noticed Remy amongst them all and was more than glad to abandon memories to be in the company of someone on the present. Reuben changed his path to be near Remy again before moving forward through the odd environment they were in.

"Hey Darlin'?" He murmured quietly as he walked with her, "Mind if'n I hang with yeh?"

Remy was considered a friend, a kind friend. Someone that had patience for some of less than stellar intelligence and didn't judge him by it, "I ain't felt this uneasy since m'first wrestlin' match."

Slowly but surely he was feeling unnerved, the fact that his headset had pretty much gone out was considered to be the least of his worries for the moment.
