The myraid of emotions that Death felt finally settled on flabberghast. He stared straight into the beady eyes of the hapless foxbun, daring it to continue sitting there, sedate, solemn, possibly content. He stared, daring it not to move its perfectly groomed butt out of their territory.

It taunted him. It did not move. "Come on, Cue!" He cried, sick of this foxbun's offending presence. "Tell him how bloody stupid it is!"

She looked the foxbun over once more. Divested of most of the mud (that admittedly she'd been a major cause of) that had caked it, it looked...almost respectable, really. Its dark little eyes did not look entirely devoid of intelligence...and that particular shade of white suited Cry's dark pelt unexpectedly well. If he was serious, well...

"Actually," she conceded, "it's a pretty cute foxbun."

Not only was the horrible little animal stil there, it was now being welcomed into the fold - he could barely believe that Cue gave in to - joined Cry's shenanigans again, just like that. That foxbun would haunt his every step. Oh, the ignominy! The mocking betrayal of his closest compatriots! Death was never good at responding to such cutting insults to his character; instead, he could only spit out a retort that barely expressed his inner turmoil: "What, now you want a foxbun too, Cue? Is that it? You all want a stupid foxbun each?"

Cue pulled a quick face of distaste and backed away hurriedly, as if to dissociate herself from fluffy ownership. "No, thanks. I'm not into pets." And especially not adorable fluffy little creatures. It was one thing to see Cry with one, but the thought of owning it made her a little sick.

"And in any case," Cry carefully pulled the foxbun back, "this one belongs to me."

Now a safe distance away, she assured, "You're welcome to it."

"This is ridiculous!" He snapped, at the end of his tether, finally jolting to his hooves with fury. His cat merely stepped away, unmoved by the foxbun but certainly unwilling to be stomped on by its owner. "I absolutely refuse to run with a stupid FOXBUN!"

"You shan't have to," he said smoothly, turning away, "I shall go and gather herbs with it right now. You may continue sparring. See you at dinner." A few low clicks, and away they went, the foxbun scampering after the leisurely stepping hooves.

Death's face was an magnificent mix of anger, frustration, impotence and disbelief. It turned in the direction of the foxbun and its new owner, leaving down the path leisurely. It then turned to the ultimate traitor, his sister, and fixed its stern, solemn gaze upon her, willing her to speak and explain her impudence.

"Well, don't look at me," Cue said, discreetly casting a speculative eye at the undergrowth around them...and where her careful vines lay, "he's your brother."

He'd have to get used to that damnable foxbun. He relented a sour "yours too," and rose, shooing his cheetah to the side. The siblings returned to sparring, but the day was already spoilt. If Death were any less proud, he would have withdrawn from the battle - unfortunately, he spent the next few hours falling into Cue's multitude of traps in his distraction. That poisoned stick was really very sharp.
