It would be more like Eragon, where the word Brisngr conjured fire.

Since it would probably be extremely difficult to come with our own, or at least an original, magic system, why don't we just shamelessly steal somebody's system?

Don't wait for me, Ronyon. I'm going to bow out of this one. Everyone else is doing such a great job of coming up with ideas and all of them are so different to anything I would think of that it'll be simpler to keep the flow that's already going smile

so how is all the brainstorming coming along? Any new and interesting idea pop in to those heads of yours?
I'm working on the dragon idea myself, and am messing with the basics before I post anything solid. When you have something you wish to post and share let me know and we can make a thread for the next step in the development process.

Magic Everyone is born with a uniquely-colored gem. ******** if I know how they get them, but they just do. Let's say they appear out of thin air on day one. The colors run from the gamut from White to Black. The darker one gets, the more powerful they get.
But don't worry. If you were born with a White Gem (lowest of the low), at adulthood, you are given a coming of age trial to have a chance at a more powerful gem. To help prevent godmodding, you can only move up 3 colors in this trial. These gems are the source of all magic. If you have a red gem, and you do a bunch of s**t with it, it's going to look pale red. That means you have to wait to recharge it. You'll be drawing on your own life energies at that point, which is dangerous-- too much stress from magic use without a gem can lead to death.
The more powerful a gem gets, the less possible it is for one to to use it in small doses. Think of like fine motor control. A white gem-wearer might be able to send a sliver of magic through a pinhole, while a black gem-wearer would find that to be an impossible task, more likely to obliterate the pinhole on accident, instead.
Is this alright with everyone?

We could all come up with our own magic systems, roll dice, and see who wins.
Or, better idea, perhaps: All forms of magic are accepted? For example, there are multiple ways/spells that do the same thing? I'm sure that if you were to follow a fantasy world for a millenium, the magic in that realm wouldn't remain the same over time.

So after a somewhat long time away any new or interesting ideas popped up into someones head?
We seem to be at a bit of a cross road with magic...or more like multiple intersection lol, so lets move that one aside and look to other areas. Maybe if we work on the other aspects the magic will bring itself to needing to be a certain way for other areas to work correctly.
The top ideas I think need a good looking at or someone to take the wheel would be...
1: a discussion on what all races should be in the world. 1a: Talking about what counts as a main race and what counts as an off race 1b: What we wish to consider civil, tribal, bestial, or well I guess orc-like is the best word I can think of but that does not mean orcs have to be that way.
2: Maybe some ideas on the political structure of the realm and world 2a: Who is in charge, who wants to be in charge, who is conspiring to be in charge 2b: How do the common people see those higher than them, and vice-versa
3: Maybe thoughts on the weapons of the time period as well. 3a: Do we have just swords, bows, and magic or are there blackpowder weapons just coming about. 3b: What about other technologies, do we have some minor clockwork things going on or is all things like that done through magic? (a small area for some magical discussion I know but lets keep it within the context of the main idea on this part)

I'm thinking some type of centralized government. Maybe an Empire. "The [insert geographical area name here] Imperium."
Whatever the central race is will be the one that controls this government. Not every member of said race will be hateful, but the edict of the Empire would be that you can either be subservient to us (not necessarily slavery, but maybe x, y and z race's place in a caste system is chosen by the government) or you can be destroyed by us.
Some races would accept this and find this more or less agreeable, a couple others would be like 'Destroy us? We're gonna destroy you!'. Maybe there'd be one race from the start of the RP that would have just been discovered by the Empire, so they don't have any immediate, prevailing opinion on their foreign policy.

I like Speh's idea. Some races would be considered... second class I'd guess. Maybe like the elves in the Dragon Age universe.

alright so we have an idea and a second for that idea which is enough to warrant a vote. Also I realize my statements pushed more into the social structure of the world rather than more political but one does need a social cast before politics come about I guess. Its like physics, everything is physics but physics works because of the math behind it so truthfully everything is math, kind of like that.
alright but we will need to flesh out the race list before we determine which ones are higher and which ones are lower. I have an idea to help with that I think so we will see how that works. I'll post up the poll for the political system though.

So here is my system for trying to better get an idea of the races of this world. Below is a list of all the races I could think of that fit into the two categories of common and sub races. If you don't like one say why and we will see about taking it off, don't see one on there speak up or it won't get put in. I have included werewolf as a common because well its me xd , and it fits with the way I have written them so far. The dragon race I know some people like and thought it might be interesting, and any details can be thought up later once I finish the dragon profiles. I did not include vampires as they have not been developed yet and so I don't know if they will be an idea that is then attached to any race making them a vampire or if becoming a vampire changes you into something that is more its own race.
Generally understood common races Human Elf Dwarf Halfling Gnome Werewolf Dragonborn/dragon-kind/walking-on-two-legs-dragons
Generally understood sub-races Orc Goblin Ogre Troll Giant Kobold Gnoll Hobgoblin

Let's scratch dragons and bring in wyverns, instead. They are totally the unsung heroes of reptilian-esque avians.
Also, don't forget to include vampires as a species, unless we're counting them as a subspecies of human, in which case werewolves should be placed there, as well.

What are the differences between Dwarf, Halfling and Gnome?
And what are kobolds, gnolls and hobgoblins?
