A couple of weeks later, the staff was finishing decorating for the Annual Christmas Party. Ruby stopped on her way in from the gardens to admire the Tree. "Just lovely.." As she inspected the gifts underneath, she noticed one that was wrapped in unusual paper. She walked over and picked it up, to try and determine who put it there. Her red eyes scanned the package for a few minutes. There was no tag on it anywhere. No indication where it was from or who it was for. "Hmmmmm" Her fingers searched for the tape as she slowly and carefully unwrapped it. Inside was a picture frame. Flipping it over, her eyes widened in shock. She immediately dropped the picture, and fell to her knees.

Christmas was near, which meant the young Prince's happiness had escalated. He whistled as he walked down the stairs grinning, winking and blowing kisses at all the maids that walked by. It was obvious that he was in a splendid mood. His eyes seemed to twinkle with a different light as he slid down the handrail of the stairs and landed gracefully on his feet. Singing now, he headed towards the Christmas tree.
It was one of his many traditions. He liked going over to the tree and added little trinkets each time. This time, it was a small crystal flower. He pulled it out of his pocket and placed it gently on his palm. It reminded him quite a bit of Andromeda, and at the thought, his cheeks went a light pink. He went to humming now as he rounded the corner. To his surprise, he noticed his mother kneeling in front of the tree. Cautiously, he approached her and asked softly, "Mother? Are you alright?"

The picture frame lay on the floor in front of her, face up. Through the broken glass stared two pair of eyes. Ruby's face grew paler than normal as she continued to stare down at it. Rather than answer Nathaniels question, she asked her own. "Who..sent this? Is this some sort of prank?"

He looked down at the frame in front of his mother. Who could those eyes belong to. They seemed strikingly familiar, but Nathaniel could not put his finger on it. They seemed to resemble his own, and that's when it struck him. Anthony's eyes. Deciding to take a more optimistic take of events he picked up the picture and looked at it with a false grin slapped on his face. "What a pretty picture, don't you think so mother? Very artistic. Perhaps someone knew how much I adore portraits and sent this to me!" He grinning, obliviously, down at his mother. He couldn't let her suspect that it was his father that sent this to them.

"Yes...of course.." Her voice came out stale, no emotion of any kind. She pushed herself to her feet. "A gift for you...it must be." She forced a smile back to her son, though it looked more sadistic than anything else, and turned to walk away. "An unmarked picture from an unknown person...of course..." She continued mumbling things to herself, most of which couldn't be heard, as she walked away

Nathaniel caught up to her and gently grabbed her wrist. "Mother.." He said softly. "It's Christmas Eve Mother. Don't you think you should get ready before our annual party?" He asked her, keeping his voice calm and steady.

Ruby turned to the feeling of Nathaniel's hand on her wrist, and lit a fireball, prepared to hurl it at him. Seeing it was him, she sighed, and let the flame go out. "Party? Oh..right..." The last thing she wanted was to pretend to be happy around hundreds of people. "Can't you just tell them I'm out of town or something?"

Nathaniel shook his head. The party was a perfect excuse to get Ruby to stop thinking about such things as Anthony. "Your people will miss you!" He pouted, childishly.

"My people." She chuckled at the thought. She gave a public speech on the affairs of state almost monthly. "They can go a night without seeing me...I really shouldn't be around anyone right now. I...I need to meditate."

He still kept his grip firm on her wrist. "Mother. You are going to that party." He said coldly. He wasn't going to let her meditate in a room alone where she'd probably stress over everything more.
