Wykla reached up to soothing pet Boreal as he crooned anxiously on her shoulder. It seemed the bronze was having trouble finding His. When he started snapping, she wondered if any candidates were going to loose fingers today. The blue was also concerned as he joined his brother. She rest her hand on the blue hide of her dragon beside her.

The first egg to Hatch startled Orothor out of his daydreaming and back to the present. Whatever dragon he was destined for wasn't going to Impress to him if he wasn't paying attention because he was dreaming of what the Impression might be like. The Bronze that ended up on the sands, one Orothor distinctly doubted was for him, was one Hatchling Orothor knew didn't care for daydreaming. The Blue that followed, however, may have been a possibility. He did this every time, at the beginning and end of a Hatching, when the hatchlings were few and he was unlikely to get his partner. This time, he would do his best to focus up to the very end. The atypical forced Hatchings, at least, always drew him back in.

The Blue didn't seem to be moving, but his attention was clearly focused on the girls, though Orothor couldn't tell if that was to find his rider or just to tease them.

Then the Bronze came at them. Orothor was suddenly glad he was two rows back. He wouldn't be reaching out to that hatchling.

The bronze continued to grow more and more irate the further into the boys he went… and the further he walked, the greyer his eyes went. Blue and bronze made it all the way to side of the Sands, near the Stands before the bronze stopped short and reared up, crooning as he tossed his head. Eyes whirled yellow and white as he paced the edge of the Sands restlessly, clearly distraught.

Finally, when the Blue tried to support him and nudge him back towards the boys, he snarled and slashed at the smaller hatchling and bolted… right into the boys. He downed one individual, trampling them into the Sand, and the Blue was racing after him for some reason, that playful tone turned challenging as the bronze stampeded through the boys.

He passed Erelus, whirled and eyed the boy and bunched up his hindquarters, pouncing on the boy and pressing hind legs into his shins, leaving deep gashes. Eyes whirling red and yellow and white, it was clear the Bronze was lost to panic and anguish. Just as he reared up to thrash Erelus into the ground, the Blue came streaking through and barreled into the Bronze’s side, bearing him over to the ground, raking and snarling as they tangled up in a fight.

The Bronze got his teeth into the Blue’s shoulder and the blue squealed in pain, kicking as hard as he could, one wing pinned beneath his body and the other flaring uselessly.

Feynath roared and ordered the Bronze off the Blue and the larger male keened as he ran from the bloodied hatchling, streaking through the girls briefly before going Between midstep. Feynath’s head drooped at the loss of a worthy son and the keening reserved for mourning lifted from her as her attention returned to the injured blue.

Brave, thrill-seeking young male that he was, the Blue struggled up and limped back towards the boys, favouring the injured shoulder. With a weary chirrup, he nosed Erelus and licked the wounds, snuffling aside the shredded cloth of the robe, Are you alright, EreMine? Your Acerath will always be here.

While the blue impressed, the Dancing Egg and Gritted Teeth Egg both began to rock more violently, as if they’d been waiting for the storm to pass.

Salin had been having a lesson on common medicines when the hum of many dragons reverberated through the weyr. She was immediately dismissed and sent to the Hatching Grounds, which she headed for at a run. This was it! The Hatching! Maybe this would be the day a dragon chose her to be its lifemate!

At the entrance of the Grounds she quickly pulled on the white robe ofered to her, then stepped out onto the sands. She bowed to the queen dragon, then took her place among the collection of candidates, eagerly waiting for the eggs to crack open.

And then one did, releasing a handsome bronze. That cheered her; it always was a good sing for a bronze to hatch first. Another egg tumbled down soon after, and she winced at the crack it made upon landing. But the occupant, a lively blue, seemed to come out unharmed. He was looking over towards the girls, too. Would he be the one for her? Her heart started to pound with the excitement of the day as she waited to see what the dragons would do.

Cyrci bit her lip in anguish as she watched the bronze struggle searching in vain for his other half. The poor thing she knew how he felt even if she knew he would never consider her. Then he lashed out at the blue and she hissed. Pink lips pulling back she snarled, a low rippling guttural sound that made the hairs on ones neck stand on end as she watched the fight taking a step forward, but before she could move to try an intervene it was over.

The bronze in his panic betweened, gone for ever, gone for good, left to his own devices in the black, blacker, blackest of the dark peace. Heart sinking in her chest Cryci stopped her growling a low whine rising from her throat in sorrow, but her ceased as well as she watched the blue impressed to one of the larger boys. Erelus if she remembered his name correctly. Well good for him. Giving them pair a small sad smile her heart tightening with pain of loss and a more then a little hint of jealousy she shook herself off. Turning she faced the now rocking eggs as she straightened her spine pulling on her strength of will.

She would find hers.

Ralla was quick to move out of the way when the distraught bronze ran towards the girls after the blue had kept him away from his rider. When the hatchling went between, she stared at the empty space for a moment, allowing a pang of sadness for the lost dragon before taking a deep breath, straightening up, and going back to her place. It was sad, but it was done, and it wouldn't help to dwell on it.

So much for everyone who thought a bronze hatching first was lucky...

Zeren was worried about the bronze now, his eyes grey and the lad knew that the Bronze's wasn't here on the sands, nor in the stands, it was lucky again that he had stepped out of the way of the bronze when the dragon came charging back at them, tumbling a few of the male candidates, he was surprised that the bronze targeted one, Erelus, they boy he'd tried to befriend .. or something. Erelus was hurt but then the blue barrelled into the bronze attacking him and Zeren's heart pounded as the two hatchlings fought. Then the Bronze was off and Between after being called off the squealing Blue who was now nosing Erelus and Zeren sighed Impression appeared to be made. He couldn't truthfully say he wasn't envious of the boy and his handsome Blue but he was happy that the Blue had found His. A tear formed in his eye at the keening from Feynath and he didn't wipe it away.

Calanoth's croon caught in his throat, creating a hiccuping noise as he switched to keening for the loss of the young one's life. His eyes tinged grey and his head drooped.

Z'fer winced. No, the bright start of this hatching was already stained and only two eggs in as well! There was a small pain in his chest as he mentally reached out for Calanoth. Calanoth had been the first to hatch as well, a large strapping young bronze, just as that one had been. Calanoth hadn't had to search for his and without even glancing at the other candidates, made known to Z'fer, Zofer at the time that he was the only one for him.

Calanoth resumed his crooning for the other hatchlings, his sadness fading as the Blue Impressed and the eggs continued rocking.

Things were not going well for the bronze. He ran around, ending up by the Stands. Hopefully, but no. He ran back into the candidates and shed first blood. She smiled at the blue for his protection of the candidates. Wykla closed her eyes as her dragon and flits keened for the lost bronze. That wasn't good. Luckily the blue found His, and a couple more eggs started rocking.

Seyari had never been one to cry openly. But the keening of the great gold, and the loss of the bronze weighed heavy on him, and he felt a few tears slide from his eyes. A loss that would not sit easy with him for a long while, but one he had to let go for the sake of the Impression. He had been taught that hatchlings sensed emotion, so now was not the time to mourn. The mother dragon was doing that for everyone Standing right now, and she didn't need more tears to combat her own.

Watching the first Impression was magical. There was just a catch-in-the-breath moment about it, and then the nearly visible click, as the dragon settled on His, and he supposed Impression was actually made. Like most other boys on the Sands, Seyari found himself a bit jealous.
But those feelings too, had to be pushed aside. The wounds on both dragon and newly minted rider disturbed him slightly, but those would be tended to. His emotions flooded over him, and he let them dissipate as a sort of hope, and a longing filled him. Watching the Impression just fueled that longing.

Sweeping. She'd been sweeping spinner webs down from corners and off of shuttered glow baskets as party of her duties today. To be honest, she wasn't so much sweeping as she was dancing with the broom, but that was neither here nor there. The important point was that the chore was being done. How and with what sort of solemnity didn't matter all that much, did it?

Especially not when the dragons began to hum. Sound shivering through the air and buzzing through the ground, Anneke squeaked and dropped the broom, handle clattering against the floor of the chamber she worked in. Eyes going wide and cheeks bunching with a broad grin, she bolted for the door -- then stopped and went back for the broom, carrying it with her as she raced for the barracks and the waiting Candidatemaster.

She managed not to swat anyone or bash herself on the head ducking into the robe thrust at her. Someone caught her by one pig-tail braid and swept a web off the end with a tsk and a laugh, but Anneke didn't much care. Let her have crawlers perched on her head! The eggs were hatching! She hopped and skipped to the sands, paying only the most marginal of attention to yet another round of lecturing before she was out there, feet heating up, bright eyes trained on the quivering eggs.

A bronze, first. That was good luck! And then the blue. Such a sweet, concerned blue, taking care of his brother that way. And then. Oh, and then!

Erelus!

Joy disappeared in an instant as Anneke's mouth dropped open at the attack. No, not her friend! She wouldn't interfere, but ...shouldn't someone? She knew that dragonets could get upset, and afraid, but he was hurting -- no, he was being saved. The blue! The brave, brave blue had gone to Erelus' rescue. And more?

More! Beaming even more impossibly ear to ear, she hopped in place and waved as the blue chose her big friend as his very own. Not that the boy had reason to be paying attention to Anneke, but she was so very thrilled for him. And worried, of course worried, because bleeding on the Sands was not a good thing. But thrilled all the same.

"Who next? Who next?" Oh. "For a dragon. In the good way. A new pair, a happy pair." Maybe she'd stop talking and simply bounce in place.

The Gritted Teeth Egg rolled left a bit and made an audible pop sound as it connected with the Sturdy Prankster Egg which in turn began rocking with quite a bit of energy, almost as if it had been struck by a gigglefit. Quickly, one dark forelimb poked through then immediately withdrew as the rocking stopped, the breakthrough clearly unexpected.

A nose pressed up against the hole as it rocked a bit and another limb poked through again, the cracks meeting up and giving way to spill the dragonet onto the ground nose first. Sneezing, it stood up and wiggled it its nose a moment before ducking its head and scraping forelimbs over the sand-encrusted snout. A brown, it seemed, had decided to join them!

And beyond, the Jitterbug Egg rocked as well, toppling over to slide top-first down the small incline. One leg stuck out and then the others followed as the egg stood up and the dragonet creeled as it tried to get the rest of the egg off. Rolling and flailing, the shell finally broke and green righted herself, yawning hugely as she turned a friendly gaze on the Candidates.

Shedrawn watched in awe as a bronze and then a blue hatched. However he bacame more nervous the longer both were on the sands. He had admired the blue while he was in his shell and the bronze was a handsome fellow, however both dragons seemed preoccupied by the stress of the bronze. Shedrawn attempted a reach out to the bronze to calm him but was met with an irritable swipe. As the two reached the edge and the bronzes eyes became more grey Shedrawn thought that his only home was someone in the stands, but there was no such savior. He winced and sighed when the bronze went between. He was doubly grateful when the pretty blue found his. He looked forward to working with the pair in the future. A handsome addition to the Weyr. He sighed again at the loss of a beautiful bronze but was happy that both had not gone between. If a dragon didn't find his he may be happier between, scary as that sounded.
Shedrawn looked to the newly rocking eggs and tried to remember his interactions with them.

And just like that two of the more lively eggs of the clutch hatched making Cyrci giggle at their antics. Oh a brown! Well she knew the Prankster had to hold a larger color, but she was still rather pleased at such a wonderful shade. She was certain anyone who impressed the likes of him would never lack laughter and a helping hand. Smiling she crooned to the little one before turning back to the green with a small frown.

This had been the one that had toppled the poor topsy turvey egg. Well technically she doubted the little green meant to do so, but still. She hoped it was a bit more careful now that it was out of the shell and would avoid injuring or messing with it's poor siblings.

As things calmed and the Hatching continued, Ralla watched the Gritted Teeth egg roll and inadvertently (or maybe not, who new?) help the Sturdy Prankster hatch. A brown! And then another egg hatched, revealing a friendly-looking green. But what about the Gritted Teeth egg? Would it hatch, too, or wait?
