Veer barely thought about it before he answered -- par for the course, except for how fast words came out. His foot, propped up on the coffee table, bounced a little. Maybe it was uncomfortable.
"Eh. Figure Quinn'd say 'no'." Which was, in fact, all the more unflattering. Apparently he'd assumed Lydia would say 'yes'. Or, well, maybe he just didn't care as much about the fact that she had turned him down. Hadn't minded taking that risk, since it really wasn't a risk. Not really. He didn't care enough. He poked at his foot, shifting and playing it casual.
"Team captain and everything. Besides, if I came up to her like 'wanna go see concerts and maybe mess around some?' she could totally kick my a**."

Hazel eyes jumped to the bouncing foot, then up to his face. Lydia noticed everything. Girl had an eye for detail, and quick mind.
"Ah ha." So there was a little something there between her room mate and the boy sitting beside her on the couch. She wasn't sure what exactly, but certainly something. Clearly Veer cared enough about that answer to be scared enough not to ask.
"Well ya, if you went about asking her that way." She rolled her eyes, and shifted on the couch so she was sitting up a little straighter, turned so she walk half facing him. "Do you hear yourself talk? Seriously," she huffed. There were only two small bites left on her plate, so she finished them off, then set her plate on the coffee table and claimed her can of coke, opening it at last.
"You don't really care to go out with me, do you? It'd be fun, sure, something to do, a possible chance to get your rocks off, but not serious." She sipped her drink, then narrowed her eyes at him. Past being insulted by his tactless, mindless conversational skills. "So why'd you really ask me?" Her index finger lifted off the can, pointing at him. "And stop avoiding the question." Three times now he'd managed not to answer it. Look who was beating around the bush.

He should probably have been insulted himself -- after all, she had called him stupid quite a bit, had mocked his way of asking her out, had made light of it, had turned to pity when she turned him down, as if he was some kind of fragile flower with an easily bruised ego. Veer, though, really wasn't. Years of back-and-forth insults with the guys, and real teasing when he'd been younger, led to a pretty thick skin.
Mostly.
Or maybe it was a lack of introspection, really -- something that, now, he took a moment to indulge in. He'd asked because it was the first thing that had come to mind at that moment. He poked another piece of meat and turned it on the fork, considering, before he shrugged.
"I dunno. I thought of it. You flirt a lot..." But then, they all kind of flirted a lot. That was the dynamic, among the fresh-faced DMCers. He thought about it, and then made a thoughtful sound.
"Girls go after guys when they're dating, anyway, don't they?"

In Lydia's defense, she hadn't been aiming to be insulting. Perhaps they both had a little trouble with communication skills, but he'd managed to get under her skin, and she hadn't felt any reason to hang onto tact while annoyed.
His shrug was not the answer she was looking for, nor was his verbal response. She was starting to think even he didn't know why he did the things he did. "Ya, a bit," she admitted after a moment, then shrugged. "But I was also not in an exclusive sort of relationship at the time."
She damn near flinched at his question though, and instead merely looked at him before concentrating on taking a drink from her can of coke. Her immediate response was 'no', but she couldn't exactly say that and be completely honest, at least not for herself. Much as she cared about Grant and loved being with him, she had yet to do anything about her and Chaonis, and she still had no idea what exactly she was going to do about it, or if she wanted to do anything.
Instead she shrugged, then gave a generic bullshit answer. "Some girls, but I really don't need another guy on my plate, no matter how great at everything you might be."

Veer polished off his food and slid the plate onto the coffee table, dropping his own still-closed can of soda onto the couch next to him. He raised an eyebrow, looking across at her, that odd little flinch, and thought about exactly how to reply. This, right here, was his opportunity to figure out what he wanted and do something about it -- but everything he could come up with would probably just get him in more s**t with Lyda.
Instead he made a noise, shrugging it off, and reached out to pop open his own can. He took a sip and the moment slipped away. Veer was really, really bad with girls. "Eh. There's always porn, anyway. You want to watch an anime or something?"
Maybe, though, Lydia could figure out his issue: afraid to ask Quinn out, looking to make himself more appealing as a potential date....

She watched him critically as he finished off his own food, sipping at her coke. It seemed as though he was done trying to convince her of how much a catch he was, or why she should be going out with him, which she was grateful for.
If she had been single, or at least less involved then she currently was, she'd debate giving him a shot. Possible not for anything serious, she got the feeling his habits might start to make her contemplate murder after a while if spent too much time with him, but for a little fun and fooling around? Sure, why not.
Her point still stood though, her plate was more then full, and she was happy with what she had.
His comment on porn earned him chuckle and a roll of her eyes. "Maybe, what you got?" As if she knew enough about anime to be picky. She'd seen a small handful of shows on tv, but beyond that she knew nothing. Lydia's personal brand of nerdiness was aimed more towards music, video games, and computers.
She glanced at him again over the rim of her coke can, considering the whole of the conversation they'd had thus far, and that clever little mind of her's had picked up on a few interesting things and was now working to put the pieces together. After a moment or two a knowing sort of grin slid along pink lips. "I think you should ask Quinn out."

The question got a choked sound, a quick look, Veer on his feet and halfway up to the television as she said it. The look he gave her, brief, was disbelieving -- and then faded to understanding, or maybe he just thought he understood. "So I can get my a** handed to me by her, too?" Veer didn't think so. Lydia must have been setting him up. He sank to a crouch in front of his television, flicking on his hard drive and shaking his head. For a moment, he lingered there, maybe to give himself time to think, to recover: then he shoved himself up to stand, one pointer thrust in her direction. "I'm not talking to you about this. Just watch the TV." He reclaimed his seat on the couch, thudding down to sit, legs sprawled in front of him, and fussed to get the TV going. At least he'd tried to find something she'd like. beejoux Do you want to leave it here maybe...?
