It was her turn to be speechless. Plushie sat in the snow, very much looking as if he had struck her down. She gasped and sputtered nonsense, unable to even form a literate response. How could someone not believe in Santa? She knew that he knew Santa was real, since he was in the process of ruining Christmas by stealing Santa's cookies, but the intent behind the statement is what did the most damage. He did not believe in Santa. She trembled, now fully feeling the effects of the coldness. He... he didn't believe in Santa... he didn't believe in Christmas... he didn't believe in the magic of it.

No, no, no, this was just a mistake. Without a word, Plushie disappeared into the sack, her entire upper half removed from sight. She was determined to find something else, something more special, something more magical. She would show him that he did believe in Santa, if perhaps only forgetting momentarily. Just a slip of the mind, is all, just a horrible mistake. Zero Omega, on the other hand, had no more interest in seeing anything inside that sack... except for one thing. I think all of you could see this coming, as did I, but Plushie was lost in the moment, in her own desperation to "right the wrong" that had just occurred. She was not thinking or foreseeing the obvious.

Moving around her silently, Zero Omega bent down, grabbed her ankle, and with a quick pull upward, toppled her over entirely into the sack. Plushie screamed out and flailed around on top of the toys, unable to find any footing. Before she could even attempt to climb back out, Zero had pulled the sack shut and tied the woven cord around it, sealing it. Plushie pushed and kicked at the inside of the sack, her feet and hands making impressions in the material. "Zero! Let me out! You didn't mean that! Let me find something else! You can't destroy Christmas!" She screamed, almost in a hysteric tone.

Without a word, Zero turned and began walking away; Plushie heard the sound of his feet crunching over snow moving further and further off...

Once again, Plushie found herself trapped inside something. This was becoming wretchedly familiar and it was as horrible the second time around as it was the first. Although, this time she had some toys to keep her company, which was a small comfort, but a comfort none the less. She listened as Zero Omega moved further and further away, leaving her there in the graveyard, trapped in the large red sack. "I've got to get out of here... I've got to stop him... I've got to make him believe again..." Plushie said to herself as she frantically felt around the toys. Her scepter, you see, was lying uselessly in the snow outside. Not good.

She felt around, using her hands to determine what each toy was -- it was dark in there, of course. Her hand touched a hard, rough object and, after further inspection, she determined it to be a plastic dinosaur. A moment before she had planned to drop it and continue her search, her hand ran down the length of his tail, which ended in a point. This might work! Plushie wiggled around within the toys, doing her best to get some leverage. Pushing the point of the tail into the sack, she pushed and pushed, trying to put as much force and weight against it as possible. At first, nothing happened, and so she pushed harder and harder still, wiggling to and fro. Then it happened... crehhgck!. The sack ripped and the tail jutted out.

Woohoo! Plushie wiggled it around, making the hole as big as possible before putting the dinosaur toy down and putting both her hands through the hole. She gripped the sack and pulled, and pulled, and pulled, ripping it bit by bit before finally, at last, the side tore completely, and she toppled out into the snow. Seeing Zero Omega a ways off, Plushie immediately grabbed her scepter and ran after him. Although I'm writing this... I can't tell you what was going through her mind... but in the next moment she had taken a flying leap through the air, with an "AAAAAAAH!" cry, and landed right on Zero's back!

He yelled with surprise -- I'm not entirely convinced that even he didn't think it might have been some graveyard ghoul -- turning this way and that in an attempt to shake off whatever was on him. Plushie hugged his back in a piggyback fashion, wrapping one arm around his front to hold on. "You're not going anywhere until you believe in Santa again!" She told him firmly as he spun and twisted and shook. Stubbornly refusing to let go, Plushie gripped more tightly, "You're not leaving! You won't ruin Christmas! You need to believe in Santa!"

Well, for the time being she had succeeded in keeping him there...

Zero flailed and twisted left and right, throwing his weight around almost violently in an attempt to get the meddlesome girl off his back. Plushie clutched as best she could, being taken for a ride, pinching her eyes shut and shaking her head rapidly and yelling, "No! No! Believe in Santa! Believe in Santa!" The scene was similar to that of a pesky little sister stubbornly nagging at her brother until she got her way. Zero jerked roughly to one side, causing her legs to slip from his sides. With another rapid jerk, her legs swung off to the side, caught under his arm. He pulled her around until she had no choice but to let go... before just dropping her in the snow. You might think it rude, but in all fairness, if someone had just flying-tackled you and clung to your back, I think even you might just up and drop them in the snow.

Plushie rolled over and pushed herself to her feet. "You can't stop believing in Santa... You'll kill him..." She said feebly, not sure if Zero realized the depth of his remark. It seems that he did. "I don't believe in Santa." He reiterated. Plushie gave an involuntary jerk, as if something had begun to spasm and wither inside of her. She took a step back, her scepter in hand. Pointing the golden end towards her free hand, she chimed,

"Square and red with a little green bow,
Be something special that I may bestow.
Bring with you your magic and might,
So that this icy heart may melt tonight."

Red and green ribbon snaked their way from the end of the scepter, intertwining and curling until a box had manifested itself in her hand. It was a Christmas present. Plushie handed it to Zero, "It's for you.. just for you. It's not a toy, or a Hallmark commercial idea... it's something just for you..." She told him. For a moment, he seemed curious; he seemed to wonder what this Christmas magic would make for him. That curiosity did not last, however. Like the Santa plushie, the snow globe, and the teddy bear, he tossed it over his shoulder, letting it land discarded in the snow.

"I don't believe in Santa." He said again... and again, Plushie felt that gut-wrenching wither inside of her.

Plushie stood facing Zero Omega, and he her, each staring back at the other. The night was still and silent, as it often is before the brink of a war, or when something horrible was building in the horizon. A gust of wind scrambled through the air, almost as if it had accidentally walked in-between these two great forces, in the midst of their impending clash, and was eager to be elsewhere. Zero looked stern and immovable; he would not be swayed, he would not allow Santa to come, he would have his revenge on Gaia even if it meant killing the symbol of Christmas, and Christmas itself. Plushie looked pained; her breathing was coming more shallow than it had before, and she winced now and again. It was as if Zero's words were killing something inside of her... and so they were... the Christmas magic that filled her this time of year.

Plushie gripped her scepter and pointed it towards the sky, waving it to and fro, not as merry as she had before, for she was growing weaker and more ill.

"Silver Bells, Silver Bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day."

Two large silver bells materialized in the air above them, rocking back and forth, ring-a-lings their traditional sound. The air grew warmer, more peaceful.

"I don't believe in Santa." Came Zero Omega's voice, hard and clear through the melody.

The bells abruptly stopped their rock, their beautiful music cut off. A terrible sound filled the air; a large, deep crack had split each of the bells. It was a horrid, monstrous gash. The bells began to fade as Plushie looked up in horror, watching as they disappeared entirely. The warm, peaceful feeling died at once, replaced by cold air and dread.

Her chest ached, enticing a soft gasp from her, another withering spasm occurring. She put a hand over her heart...it was as if it was breaking...

Plushie staggered a moment on her feet, her chest tightening. It was such an odd, horrible feeling. If you've ever felt sick from hunger, you might somewhat recognize it. An emptiness swelled in her stomach and chest, making her ill and weak. She felt hollow inside, as if something that had been beautiful and majestic was withering away and dying within of her. She couldn't give up; she couldn't let Zero defeat her because she was all that stood between him and Gaia, between him and Santa, and between him and Christmas. It was up to her to defeat him. She didn't want to hurt him, though, not as she had the bots and zombies. Unlike them, he was an actual person, and although wicked... or perhaps, as it's Christmas, although naughty... Plushie felt he was misguided and needed help finding the right path again. Like Christmas, he too needed saving.

Zero Omega observed the change with her, noticed how she seemed less peppy and full of magic. He had also noticed what his words had done to the Silver Bells, realizing that he was causing this great Christmas magic to fail and fade. His wicked heart grew with elation. At last, he knew how to defeat this meddlesome girl and ensure that Christmas would be ruined for all of Gaia. Despite this, he didn't look pleased with himself. It was a simple matter of this is what it is, and it cannot be stopped. It is inevitable.

Plushie lifted her scepter once more, preparing to call out for another symbol of Christmas magic. Before she could utter a single word however, Zero acted. "I don't believe in Santa." He said once more. Plushie's arms dropped as if someone had put a weight on them, her scepter falling to her side. She staggered and gasped; it felt like someone was strangling her insides. "Don't give up..." She told herself silently. Her arm shaking, she moved to lift her scepter once more... "I don't believe in Santa." Came Zero's voice, firm and insisting. Plushie cried out and dropped to her knees, unable to even stand. Her chest was tight, her stomach feeling as if she hadn't eaten in days. She gasped for breath, looking up at Zero with tears in her eyes, "Stop.. please..." She begged him.

Zero's heart was so encompassed by ice that even a girl on her knees in pain, pleading with him, did nothing to him. He walked over towards her, almost mechanical in nature. Leaning over, he took hold of her scepter. Plushie struggled feebly for a brief moment to hold onto it, but found she couldn't. She supported herself on her hands and knees once Zero had taken it from her grasp, looking down at the ground. "Please... don't.." She knew what was coming, and she was not let down... as wonderful as that would have been.

Zero took one last look at her scepter before gripping both ends and bringing it down as hard as possible on his knee... snapping it in two.

That deplorable sound seemed to echo from every single dead tree in the graveyard; it thundered through the swaying branches, bounded off the rotted tree wood, and clashed wretchedly with the tomb stones like nails on a chalkboard. It was heartbreaking and gut wrenching. Plushie couldn't bear to look up and see her scepter in such a broken condition, its magic maimed and murdered with one fatal snap. She kept her head down, letting her tears run down her cheeks and drip into the snow -- drip, drop, drip, drop.

Zero Omega glanced at each half of the now broken scepter before tossing it to the ground, discarding it as he had everything else. Plushie turned her head after a moment to gaze at her fallen companion, fresh tears coming to her eyes when she saw the state of it. Reaching a hand out, she picked up first one half, and then the other, sitting back on her heels and cradling them in her lap. She could feel Zero's eyes on her; he wondered how she'd react, if she'd attack him or just sit there and give up.

Maybe he couldn't be saved. Maybe he was so far lost in his wickedness that nothing and no one could bring him back. Plushie thought these things as she sat, staring down at her broken scepter, knowing she couldn't possibly mend it. The magic inside had been broken in half; she couldn't possibly continue to keep fighting with it. Could she fight at all? It was bad enough as of late, what with Zero declaring over and over that he no longer believed in Santa. Her magic had been fading; she had been growing more ill with each declaration he made. Now her scepter was broken; she couldn't channel anything left... if there was anything left.

"Please... fix yourself..." She whispered to her scepter, hoping there'd be some Christmas miracle and it would magically mend. It did not. Each half lay there, as if dead, in her lap. "This wouldn't have happened if you had just minded your own business." Zero told her. Plushie knew the comment was supposed to hurt, but she couldn't help but give a sad laugh. Looking up at him, she said, "Because you're somehow the better person for what you're doing, than me, the person who meddled to save Christmas."

Zero shrugged and turned a bit, preparing to depart. "Look where your meddling has gotten you. Your scepter is broken and Christmas is as good as done for."

Plushie remained silent; she couldn't respond to what he had said because, in a sad dose of realism, she knew he was right. Her meddling, as good intention'd as it was, hadn't done Christmas a spot of good. She had battled a robot army and a zombie army, had fought her little heart out to save Christmas, and here she was with the mastermind behind this wicked plot, unable to defeat him. What had she accomplished? Sure, she had stopped the robots from stealing more cookies, and the zombies from eating people's brains, but the one that mattered most was the boy in front of her... and she couldn't stop him.

It seemed as if all her efforts were made in vain. Zero Omega would continue with his plan; he would continue to steal Santa's cookies, Santa would be unable to come to Gaia to deliver presents, children everywhere would stop believing, and then... She couldn't even finish the thought; it was too horrible to bear. Plushie dropped her head with a pitiful little sob.

"I'm sorry, Gaia... I'm sorry Christmas... I'm sorry Santa." She said miserably. The thing about most villains is that they don't quit when they're ahead. I think this can be attributed to their downfall. Zero Omega, who heard her words, turned back to face her. He had walked a few feet away, preparing to leave and continue on with his plan. "Don't sit there and apologize to Gaia, or to Christmas, or to Santa. Blubbing isn't going to change my mind. I am going to get my revenge... and Christmas will be destroyed. No one will believe in Santa after tonight. No one. When he doesn't come with his presents, no one will care about him any longer." He said, turning once more to make his exit.

Plushie's tears slipped from her cheeks and onto her hands as she whispered two words, two very small words, but two words with a huge impact...

"I will."

Zero Omega stopped in his tracks. He had heard those two words, as soft as they were. He turned to face the girl before him, who still remained on her knees in the snow, her head down as if in defeat. "What did you say?" He inquired. Perhaps she wouldn't repeat it. Perhaps it had merely been a stubborn refusal as opposed to a firm defiance. There was a difference, you see. Stubborn refusal would eventually fade and was more-so a pout-like comment whereas firm defiance would never break on its own. He question was met with silence for, what seemed to him, minutes, but then it came once more, soft and quiet as if it floated on the tail of a gentle summer breeze.

"I will."

Zero craned his head sideways in annoyance; it was a gesture done when one was growing angry but trying not to. He knew what those two words meant, and thanks to the comment he made moments ago about no one believing in Santa, Plushie did as well. She would never stop believing in Santa, or in Christmas, and as long as she still believed there was a hope, albeit a sliver of hope, that both Christmas and Santa would live on.

"You'll stop believing in Santa. It might take you a few years, but year after year, with no presents, you'll grow tired of holding onto that childish belief." Zero said, doing his best to keep his tone casual and full of confidence; he worried that, by sounding too pushy, the girl would detect his fear. It didn't matter, one way or the other. She knew that her belief, even if she was the only one in all of Gaia who still had it, would be enough. "I'll never stop believing in Santa, or in Christmas. Christmas isn't about presents. Christmas is about kindness, generosity, belief... and second chances." Plushie replied, her voice still softened, a few more tears dripping onto her hands.

Before Zero could respond with another attempt to break her spirits, something happened in that moment... something quite magical. Plushie's hands became outlined with a soft light, baby blue and silver in nature. It was a glow. She stared down at her hands with a little gasp, amazed by what she was seeing. It was magic! "That's impossible... I broke your magic scepter!" Zero exclaimed. He too had seen the light. Plushie looked up at him, her expression becoming more gentle and uplifted. "It's Christmas.. magic can come from anywhere." She told him, slowly getting to her feet.

Zero took a step back, not expecting (or liking) this turn of events. Plushie felt a warmth creep through her cold bones, felt some strength returning to her. She waved her hand through the air, silver sparkles forming a trail through the motion. "I will never stop believing in Santa or Christmas." Plushie said, feeling the 'good feelings' within growing, the glow around her hands intensifying. With a wave of both hands, she chimed,

"Soft and white,
Powdered bright,
Christmas Snow,
Fill the night."

Silver and blue sparkles projected from her hands, the magic making its way up into the sky. And then... it began to snow! Plushie smiled and spun round and round under the fluttering snowflakes. It was a wonderful feeling.

"I don't believe in Santa." Came Zero's voice, icy and full of anger. Plushie winced, the snow ceasing, leaving the night sky dark and empty once more. The glow emanating from her hands faded... but it did not disappear.

Zero Omega could not believe what he had just seen; despite the apparent sickness and the lack of magical scepter, this meddlesome girl had managed to produce Christmas magic. He stared in both wonder and anger; on one hand, he felt curious to know how this could possibly be, but on the other he saw what it really was... a block in his path to annihilate Christmas. Plushie was wounded by the vile words, but she refused to give into them and let them down inside of her, down where her belief glittered brightly. That darkness could never be allowed near it.

She glanced down at her hands, watching the beautiful glow flicker. "I will never stop believing in Christmas, or in Santa, or in the spirit of Christmas. I will never stop being kind, I will never stop giving, especially to those who need it most, and I will never stop believing in myself." Plushie said. The bluish silver light intensified once more, shining brightly, full of life. She balled her hands into fists momentarily before opening them once more and thrusting them out in front of her,

"Christmas Tree once more to me,
Hear my call and come to be.
Stand up proud, and big, and tall,
Show yourself, for one and all."

The light emanated from her hands, coursing through the air and spiraling higher and higher. A green tree formed within the spirals, though not nearly as big as the last -- this one was perhaps only four feet tall. It was a fraction of the size of her last tree. A little golden star glinted on its tip, colorful Christmas ornaments hanging here and there as silver and blue garland wrapped it. It wasn't much, but it was something!

"I don't believe. I don't believe in Santa. I don't believe in Christmas. I don't believe in kindness. I don't believe in forgiveness." Zero Omega spat angrily at the sight of the tree. Plushie clenched her teeth as if resisting the effect of his words, telling herself over and over to never stop believing, never let this darkness win -- Christmas needed her! Some ornaments fell from the little tree, a wrap of garland dropping off as if withered and dead. The little tree itself shuddered and began to wither... but it did not fade, nor did the light around Plushie's hands, however it flickered.

Seeing that the tree did not vanish as the bells had, Zero rolled his eyes and turned, stalking towards the gates. "I refuse to play these childish games." He said. Plushie glanced down at her hand as if she held something within it before she made a throwing motion towards Zero's back. Though she held nothing physical, something did happen. The large gates before him a few feet away froze over, trapping them both inside the graveyard. Plushie had, so it seemed, thrown some kind of freezing ice at the gates. Zero turned back to her and glared, obviously not appreciating the lock-and-key gesture. Plushie stood straight, her face determined, her hands aglow with Christmas magic, magic that resonated from within her. She was not about to give up.

"You want to have this little showdown? Fine. Have it your way." Zero said.. and so he advanced...

Zero advanced; the scene was one of those long, drawn out impending-clash moments that you might see in a film. The protagonist stands their ground, the antagonist slowly advances, all is quiet except for a bit of wind to make the scene more dramatic. That was this moment. If we had some eerie music it would have been perfect, but I trust you can add some using your imagination. Plushie refused to back down and Zero refused to give up on his plans -- neither would accept defeat.

"All you had to do was sit there. I'd have left, continued with my plans, and everything would have been great." Zero stated. Plushie balled her glowing hands up into fists, snorting with distaste. "Great? Destroying Christmas isn't great, not for anyone but you." She retorted. Zero Omega rolled his eyes with one of those 'you're an idiot' chuckles. "That's the only person I care about."

Ugh. How selfish. Plushie glared at him with a combination of anger and pity. Zero outright laughed, evidently amused by her expression, even overjoyed to see it. "You can give me that look all you want. I don't care. Go ahead and hate me. I'm going to destroy Christmas for you and for Gaia. I'm the bad guy." He said, encouraging her anger. His words told Plushie that he wanted to be seen as the big bad wolf of this story; he wanted everyone to hate him, to know it was his doing, to blame him, because then he wouldn't be the goof with the pie in the face... he'd be the evil mastermind.

Plushie took a deep breath, remembering that Zero too needed saving, just like Christmas. "I don't hate you and you're not the bad guy." She said. She would not allow him to deter her from her plans; she was going to save both him and Christmas. It wouldn't be right to annihilate him, but even more-so at Christmas time! Christmas wasn't about destruction and meanness. Plushie waved her hand in a circular motion at the ground, the Christmas magic trailing behind her motions with silver-blue sparkles. The snow began to roll, and roll, and roll, forming a giant ball, then another, and another. With a wave of her hands, the balls jumped atop one another, forming a snowman.

It turned around in its place, first once, then twice, finally facing Zero Omega -- it had a face! She hadn't used coal or carrots or a hat... but each was present. This wasn't Frosty, mind you, but it was a snowman! "Remember how much fun it is to make a snowman with your friends?" Plushie asked Zero. The snowman began to bounce towards him, not in a threatening manner, but more-so in a happy, playful manner. Despite the snowman being right in front of him, plain as day, Zero scowled and said, "I don't believe in magical snowmen." The little snowy friend toppled over, each ball rolling from its lower foundation. The snowman's head sat a bit away, its coal mouth turned into a sad little frown.

Plushie sighed sadly; it seemed Zero would deny any sort of Christmas magic she produced... but no matter what, she would never give up on it. He could deny whatever she showed him, but she'd keep showing him until he believed once more. The glow flickered, but still it did not fade. She would never give up.

The fallen snowman had not faded. He sat a little discombobulated in the snow, each of his layers separated, looking on at the two clashing forces. Zero crossed his arms in a smug manner, believing himself to be entirely untouchable by this Christmas phooey. What he wanted mattered most, not these mumbo jumbo Christmas parlor tricks. He wanted revenge; he wanted to steal all of Gaia's sweets so that Santa could not deliver presents. Gaia would stop believing in Santa and then the fat jolly man would fade away, also. Then Gaia would be as miserable as he was. This meddlesome girl and her little goody shoes did not matter. She couldn't defeat him and she wouldn't save Christmas.

Plushie thought to herself how impossible this seemed, but reminded herself that, when her scepter had been broken, she had still been able to channel the Christmas magic she believed in. That had to be a sign that this was possible, otherwise she'd have simply been defeated. It all depended on her belief, and she couldn't, and wouldn't, relinquish it. The newly restored confidence enticed a brighter glow around her hands; the magic had strengthened with her belief. She waved her hands once more, the light shining bright...

"I don't believe in magic. I don't believe in Christmas. I don't believe in Santa. You can't beat me. These parlor tricks are just that, silly little tricks from a silly little girl. I don't believe. I don't believe. I don't believe." Zero chanted in an insistent sing-song manner. Plushie fell to one knee before him, wincing with pain. The tightness had returned to her chest, her stomach hollowing out with that empty, withering ache. She clenched her fists as if attempting to hold onto the Christmas magic. The light flickered and began to fade.

"I don't believe. I don't believe. I don't believe." Zero continued, relentless in his attack. He wanted to make sure she stayed down this time and didn't meddle any longer. Time was running out; he needed all those cookies gone! Plushie shivered as if a chilling wind had crept into her bones, feeling nauseous and dizzy, the glow almost out.

"I DON'T BELIEVE!"

The glow was barely visible now; it flickered as a dying light bulb might in its last minutes of life. Plushie struggled to remain even on one knee; her foot was in the snow as if she were moments away from getting back to her feet, but a weight came over her that was dreadful and heavy. It was the weight of Zero's negativity. He possessed his own magic, whether he knew it or not. Disbelief isn't all showy lights and magical sights, but it does pack its own metaphoric punch in that it can make all these magical things disappear... as we've all been seeing.

"Don't give up, Plushie; you can do this. He may not believe, but you do.. and just as his magic destroys, yours creates.. Don't give up.." Plushie thought to herself as she shuddered and bit back a sound of sickness. It took more strength than she knew she had, but she shakily got to her feet. "I believe, I believe, I believe.. I can do this. I believe in Christmas, I believe in Santa, I believe in goodness. He needs me.. Don't give up.. Don't give up on yourself.. don't give up on Christmas.. don't give up on him.." She thought, taking deep breaths.

"Christmas, Christmas, good and true,
Please give me strength so I may save you."

She chimed softly, only to herself. Zero didn't need to hear this, as right now, it didn't concern him. The faded glow gradually began to grow brighter, and brighter, and brighter. Plushie closed her eyes, gathering her strength, focusing on how much she loved Christmas, believed in its magic, and believed in the good spirit of all... even the ones like Zero Omega. She lifted her arms, her hands towards the sky, the glow in full magnitude. "I don't believe in Christmas magic!" Zero snapped. This time.. his words had no effect!

"Christmas Spirits, one and all,
Hear my words, hear my call.
Beckoned forth, I need you so,
Show yourselves, and do not go.
Strong and true, powerful and bright,
Christmas, Christmas, in all your might."

Her hands were completely obscured by the radiant light that now emitted from them. It grew more brightly, ribboning off in all directions. Silvers, blues, yellows, pinks, reds, greens all stemmed from one white light, each strand glittering and beautiful. It twirled and jetted to and fro, appearing as shooting stars might.

The final stand had begun...

This was it. This was the beginning of the epic showdown that would either save Christmas or send it into ruin. Plushie knew that little bits of Christmas magic could not, and would not, ever reach into the dark depths to find Zero Omega, the person he had been before the pie in the face. It would take everything she could muster, in one final summon, to show him the full and true magic of Christmas. She only hoped that she could get him to believe in goodness again before she ran out of energy. There were only two possible endings to this story: the first was that she'd reach him, way down in the dark, and save both him and Christmas; the second was that she'd drop in the snow, completely depleted of all her Christmas magic, and Christmas would fade away forever. Here's hoping it's the first.

The dazzling streams of light jetted this way and that, lighting up the graveyard. One of the light streams swirled around each bit of the fallen snowman, and when it had moved on, each layer of snowman hopped back to life, stacking itself again until the snowy friend was whole once more. Another stream of light spiraled around the half-withered little tree; around and around in went and with each turn, the tree turned. Higher and higher it grew until it stood a towering thirty feet tall. The withered look was gone, replaced by a healthy, lively green. The ornaments sparkled and glistened, the star shining bright, the garland shiny and frilly. Another light stream twirled around the graveyard gates, leaving in its wake cords of colored lights, until the entire graveyard was encircled with flickering colors.

Zero Omega turned this way and that, watching the magic unfold before him. He made an angry noise, not wanting to see what this Christmas phooey had to show. Turning back to the source of this hocus pocus, he snapped out, "This is a delusion! It isn't real! Christmas is gone! I don't believe in it! No one does!" Like last time, his words had no effect. Plushie wouldn't let him into her head any longer; the sight of unfolding magic was more than enough to lift her spirits. The light continued to emanate from her hands, shrouding them from sight with the magnitude of its white glow. She could feel the magic leaving her inside, being pulled out into a visible show. She wouldn't give up.

A stream of light traveled up into the sky, higher and higher, and higher it went before it exploded. Snowflakes reigned down from the sky, so soft and refreshing. Another stream of light danced through the air as if drawing a picture against the sky. Large Christmas bells materialized, rocking back and forth, sounding their familiar holiday tunes.

Plushie looked on with delight, seeing so many familiar signs of Christmas; it was so merry, so wonderful. The snowman hopped around in a happy little dance, the bells ringing soundly, the tree sparkling with life, the lights flicking brightly. Zero seemed a bit overwhelmed; none of his negativity was working, and Christmas cheer was all around him.

The little snowman hopped from spot to spot, apparently not satisfied standing in either. He was whole once more; he needed to move, needed to bounce, needed to spread his Christmas cheer everywhere he could. The tall tree glistened against the snow, its ornaments each holding a soft white reflection, its star shining brightly. The lights wrapped around the graveyard gates alternated between full brightness and patterned flickering -- red, green, yellow, blue, orange. The spectral scene continued, multi-colored rays of light swirling through the air in a carefree manner, as if each one was happy to have room to move.

Plushie watched with wonder and amazement; she had seen Christmas magic manifest itself into bits and pieces of 'show' like the raining marshmallows, elves, and bells and ribbons... but this... this was wow. The glitter-freckled light jetted this way and that, spiraling, waving, exploding off into smaller strands. One red stream danced about before plummeting into the ground. The earth shook a moment before large candy canes sprouted out, as if overly large flowers. Another two spiraled about one another in the distance, that familiar 'drawing' movement taking place once more. A larger gingerbread house began to phase into sight; its cookie walls crisp and brown, its roof a powdered white icing, Large candies decorated the roof and windows, formed a walking trail up to the front door, which an average sized person could in fact enter.

Zero Omega eyed the gingerbread house as if he'd like nothing more than to turn Godzilla size, stomp over to it, and crush it under his foot. This Christmas magic and happiness was becoming too much; how could he possibly deny Christmas magic when so much of it was staring him right in the face? Even more so, none of it was disappearing as the last bits had. He knew simply proclaiming his disbelief would not be enough -- after all, it wasn't honest anymore. Truth was essential, even in times such as this. He struggled to remain focused... all the festive sights were distracting him. He could not allow this. What could stop this? His disbelief, no... but.. perhaps...

"I'm surprised you're able to pull so much Christmas magic out, what with so many Gaians losing faith in it." He said. Plushie's attention was drawn from the sights around her; she turned her focus to him, unsure as to his meaning. "What are you talking about? Gaia hasn't lost any belief in Christmas magic." She stated. Zero smirked, "I'd say otherwise. It's getting late into Christmas Eve and Santa hasn't come yet. I don't hear carols. I don't hear anything." Plushie listened and, as horrible as it was, he was right. She heard nothing. No Santa, no caroling, no nothing.

Two of the light rays faded in mid-spiral, dying off...

"Don't listen to him; he's just trying to get into my head. He wants me to think that Gaia has stopped believing in Santa, and in Christmas, and in Christmas magic, and they haven't." Plushie told herself; she knew Zero was just trying to throw her off, to get her doubtful of Christmas magic. Without belief in it, it couldn't exist. True, she believed in it, and always would, but the thought of no one but her believing in it... well, that wasn't a very positively powerful thought.

Zero noticed the two lights fade. Perfect. Soon, each and every one of them would be gone, and once there was no more Christmas magic, there'd be no way for these 'signs' to continue showing. He casually shrugged, glancing around as if expecting to see someone. "That's odd. I know we're in the graveyard, but Durem is usually busy with people. There should be people caroling." He said nonchalantly, almost as if confused by hearing nothing. Plushie knew he was right. The whole of Gaia was usually busy with people; people doing last minute shopping, people caroling, people entertaining at parties, children running about in search of Santa... and even Santa himself making his way from home to home. There was nothing.

"It seems almost as if Gaia doesn't care about Christmas anymore. Santa hasn't come yet -- there's usually at least one sighting of him by now. But listen... there's absolutely nothing." Zero continued, planting the seeds of doubt in the girl's mind. She'd know he was right. Plushie's hands lowered a bit, her arms a-tremble, as if they had begun to feel as heavy as weights. The colored lights began to fade, still spiraling and moving through the air, though feeble, as if they became uncertain as to whether or not they should be there.

"People are just... Home waiting for Santa... and it's cold out..." Plushie said. It sounded lame even to her. There was no reason to not hear the festive sounds of Christmas Eve. Every year had been the same. Why was there nothing now? It made no sense... unless people were home, except not in wait for Santa, but instead with a scrooge-feeling towards him and Christmas. Ugh. This couldn't be true. It just couldn't be. Zero was distracting her, putting doubt in her, and her doubt was turning to fear.

Another ray of light faded and died...
