"For some reason people keep sayin' that," Roch said with a strange expression. "But hell, that just means you need to meet the sisters, too!" he said. "You seem to think a lot like them," he teased. Then he stopped, thinking over his pals and listing WHO he would let near Taryn and who he WOULDN'T.
Nahm was on top of the list of people he wouldn't. True facts.
He headed for the next attraction, dropping his ball and letting swing. "I'm giving up on Xiu, I told you that, right?" he asked quietly.

"The sisters? Do you, mean, um... Needle? Needle and Lattice?" Taryn asked, idly swinging her golf club between her knees. "They seem nice." Of course, there had to be more sisters than just them at Amityville, but they were the only ones the ghoul knew of that Roch was relatively close to.
The chimera took up the station after Roch, momentarily stunned by the vibrantly-glowing orange jack o lantern that decorated the set. She pulled back to swing and barely nicked the ball being so thrown-off by Roch's statement.
"What? Why?!" she asked. Her body automatically went through the moves of playing golf (badly) while she tried to reason her way through Roch's mind. "You seemed so taken with her, why now? Did something happen?"

He had to keep moving, so before he went on he let her finish putting and headed for the next attraction to set up his shot. "Well... I figure she's gonna wind up with that one guy, the guy that saved her life. They seemed real close after the fight and all that, and... I can't even argue datin' a guy that saves your life and risks his own," he said quietly. "And she turned me down already, right? So I figure it's only right to back off."
He groaned. "But I just keep screwin' up, Taryn!" he said, running a hand over his face. "Every time I try and fix something I just wind up makin' it worse. I'm an idiot that shouldn't even screw around with relationships," he told her.
He watched blankly as the gold ball went flying, dropping right into the hole. "Jack, even the golf game is telling me I'm right about this," he said blankly.

"Oh, come on," Taryn reasoned, shaking her head and mushing her mouth to one side, "Just because he saved her life doesn't mean they're going to be a couple. If someone saved my life I'd be grateful too, we might get closer, but there's no way that'll decide who I date. So you know they have no sense of self-preservation, what about everything else?" It could have just been bias talking, but the ghoul felt she needed to tell Roch her side of the story. As warped as it was, she wanted him to have Xiu. He was so smitten, so torn over her...
Sure, she had seen the pair leave the field arm-in-arm as well, but when the novelty faded away, who knew where Xiu would end up?
"Screwing up? Roch, what happened..." Her golf skills were clearly greatly decreased by worry.

He hesitated, looking guilty as hell. But he was guiltier than Hel, cuz Hel had only thought of kicking Lizzy's butt, he, on the other hand, had-- "I mighta... been a bit mean to someone," he muttered, looking like a guilty little boil. "But I still think I was right in what I said!" he added quickly.
Oh, brilliant, Roch. Not enough that you're losing Xiu and you would lose Mot if he found out about making Lizzy cry, now you're risking losing Taryn, too? Just to confess your stupidity to someone?
Idiot. Oh, and next would you tell her about asking Xiu to not call you? Masochistic idiot! He also really, really sucked at this game, he thought blankly as he finally got the ball in the hole.

"Mean?" she asked, "How mean are we talking, here?" It was one thing to cal someone a jerk, and another entirely to give them a fat lip and push them in the mud. Taryn had known some truly mean people in her past, and she didn't think that Roch could be one of them. "What was it you said, exactly?"
So much for an exciting, feel-good game of mini golf...

"We didn't come here to talk about that stuff, we came to play, right?" he said, showing just how guilty he was. He didn't even think about beating Sparrow or Taryn up, that didn't qualify as mean to him, but making a ghoul cry, on the other hand-- "Besides, you'll get mad at me, and I probably got enough people mad at me already," he muttered, pouting.
"What have you been up to?" he asked, trying to change the subject. Ahh, the guilt, the guilt had him hitting the ball again and again, trying to get it into the hole. He wasn't really paying attention to what he was doing, which was obvious.

"Roch, I'm not going to get mad at you," Taryn denied, her brows still furrowed deeply. Whatever illusion she had had about this being like any other outing was shattered. She'd might as well try and get whatever she could out of him and help the best she could. The game continued automatically, and it seemed like when the ghoul had shut herself off to negative emotions, her game actually got... better? "I haven't been doing anything, so you might as well just elaborate. It clearly bothers you, and I'm a friend. Friends are here to listen to problems. Come on, now, it's just me. Tell me what's wrong."
Of course, she wasn't going to go into detail about her escapades in the past week or so. It had been a lot of working, and a little bit of thinking. She didn't want him to be angry with her.

He frowned. "I just--I got a friend who's crushing on a ghoul. And she considers him one of her best friends and calls him her big brother, but at the same time she doesn't even realize how he feels. And I'm an idiot, and another ghoul, who likes him, pointed it out to me, but... She travels over a hundred miles to spend a day with him, even though she's got a boilfriend back at school, and she doesn't see anything wrong with leading him on, because she has no clue how he feels. And he isn't telling her, because he's scared!"
"You should at least notice how your friends feel, right?" he asked her.
Oh, Roch, Roch, Roch... OTL

Oh boy, it was one of these. So his friend was him, right? and the ghoul was Xiu. ...wait a second, no, what was this about boilfriends 'back at school'? Confusion struck Taryn like a brick to the face. Alright, rewind. So maybe it really was his friend. Silence overtook the ghoul as the gears in her head slowly turned. Best friends, one leading the other on with the boil lost and ignorant to her feelings.
Huh. If she didn't know better...
"Alright, so... so ghoul-friend is leading boil-friend on, even though ghoul-friend has a... a boilfriend here at Amityville." Was that even close? It'd be so much easier if he just used names, it wasn't like she knew many people at Amityville. "So I'm assuming the mean-ness was targeted toward the ghoul-friend." This wasn't the Xiu situation at all! What was going on?!

"I kinda lost my temper with the ghoul," Roch muttered, setting up his next shot. "And told her that she should pay more attention to people's feelings before she dumped heavy titles like 'big brother' on people. How would you feel if your crush called you 'little sister' all the time?" he asked her. "And then came across town to spend a day with you, giving you false hope, when you KNEW they had someone else? It ain't fair. I mean--"
He wracked his brain for a way to put it. "It'd be like if... if I was dating Xiu and you liked me, but I went around dragging you places, thinking nothing of it," he said. "That would make me--"
He frowned, thinking about it. "But I ain't datin' Xiu, I gave up on her," he said, with a shrug. "So I guess that one doesn't work..."

She imagined that Roch must have used more harsh words than that to feel so guilty about it, but she'd let it slide. He clearly was paying for it enough already. The ghoul, who ever she was, did seem to be leading... but was she really? Boils and ghouls were supposed to be able to be friends without the obligation of a relationship, and the boil had never told-- oh, what was she on about! These weren't her friends, and this wasn't her problem. There was no need to wrack her brain over it. Maybe Roch had gotten sensitive about the situation because of his own.
"No, I understand. That'd be pretty... terrible." It would be, but Roch and Xiu were meant to be together. They'd find no resistance or false hope on her end. "Maybe if 'you' made it abundantly clear, or were just a little observant, not so much... I mean, boils and ghouls can be 'just friends'..." Oh, Roch.
"Roch, why are you giving up on Xiu? You're so taken with her, it's obvious even now. What happened between you and her?" The reaper had made it rather clear that she needed to specify which situation she was asking about. Again her emotions got the best of her, and her half-minded shot was pretty terrible.

"Taryn," he said patiently. "She turned me down. You know what a guy is if he keeps chasing a ghoul after being turned down? A stalker, or something," he said. "She has the freedom to pick who she wants, and I ain't gonna stand in the way of her being happy. So I gotta get over it. That's why I asked her not to call me for a while," he added thoughtlessly.

Oh no! That couldn't be!
"Roch! No, that doesn't mean you have to be over her!" Taryn said, mouth mushing to one side. Then again, he'd never elaborated on what kind of rejection it was. Maybe she'd thrown something in his face? No, no... she wouldn't still be calling him then. "If it doesn't kill you to be just her friend, and it clearly doesn't, you should stay! Coming back after will find you still attracted to her, I'm sure. You're not standing in the way of her happiness by being her friend, she clearly l--" Don't use that word. That was a bad word for this situation. "--likes you as a friend and it probably hurts her more to have her friend rejecting her than knowing he wants to be with her." It'd her her, anyway. She liked Xiu, she didn't want this to be happening. "What did she say, Roch? When she turned you down, what did she say, exactly?"

"She said she understood," he said quietly. "What the JACK does she understand?" he demanded. "She even APOLOGIZED," he said. "What the hell am I supposed to do in that case? I said goodbye, walked away, and good riddance," he muttered. "But sure she would. Jack, Taryn, I don't think she would keep her own hand if it said it wanted to leave. Or maybe I just don't mean that much to her, which makes sense if she really is dating that other guy. Who am I to demand someone actually gives a s**t about me?"
Wait... was that what he'd been doing? He went still, staring blankly at the oogey boogey over the hole, not putting at all. "Jackdammit, I'm such an idiot."
