"Ferros was big. Mechanical dragon," Jordan said. "It's weird. I find it hard to imagine him that way, but it's still the way he feels. Like there's a huge space in my mind, somehow, for him to be the right size in." He laughed. "He complains about being too small now, if you can believe that."
Ferros grumbled irritation. I should be the largest.

"Dude, really? Is he jealous of Clarice's weapon? That thing is freakin' huge," Madison said, with a cheerful shake of her head. "No offense, Ferros~ but man, I dunno what I would've done if I'd been chosen by something like her weapon. Break my arms trying to pick it up, probably."
We picked you, not some giant thing, Kouki said, possessively.

"We haven't seen it, but he's already grumpy," Jordan laughed.
I should be biggest. The weapon was outright sulking now.
"Actually, if you'd been chosen by a larger weapon, you'd probably have been fine. There's some kind of effect that makes it easier. Magic." Jordan shrugged. "As large as Ferros is, there's no way I should be able to carry him one-handed, much less swing him properly, but he doesn't feel heavy to me. More like a normal sledgehammer."
I am not normal, Ferros muttered.
"You're the farthest thing from normal, yes." Jordan snickered.

"Oh, man. It's like..." Madison stretched her arms out to try and indicate the size of Clarice's weapon, then lowered them with a shake of her head. "I can't even stretch enough. It's probably bigger than all of me. Maybe all of you, too."
She grinned at the mention of weapon grumpiness. "Mine too. They're funny, huh? Though... I guess if I only had one person to talk to I'd be jealous of everything too."
Hmph.
Something flickered in the distance, drawing her attention, but whatever it was had faded back into the general watery murk before she could focus. "Ugh. There's things out there." She grew quiet for a moment before speaking again. "If they really can't die, then, like... I at least want to keep them out of our world, y'know?"

"True enough. On the other hand, nobody else being able to hear him means that he can say some truly awful things and then laugh while I try to keep a straight face." Jordan chuckled.
I watch your dreams when I can't sleep, too.
"Wha - dammit, Ferros!" Jordan gave Maddie a slightly pained look. "He decided to demonstrate."
He, too, caught the peripheral flicker in the depths, and walked over to the thick plastic of the window to peer fruitlessly after the vanished motion. "Better make a note in the log," he said, and sighed. "Yeah. I'll settle for that."

Madison made the note as per instructions, then settled back in her chair with a pensive expression. "It kinda... kinda scares me, when I think about it? Not them... they've always scared me." She grimaced before her face smoothed out again. "But me. What I'm, like, willing to do. To stop them. What I want to do. I want to make them suffer like how I - we - everyone has. I want a scream out of them for every single scream we've ever screamed... it scares me but it makes me happy at the same time. Because it's fair, isn't it?"
One hand tightened over Kouki's beads.

"I think I understand," Jordan answered, turning to study Maddie's face. "It might be fair, yes. But we can't afford to play with them too much." He thought, a little guiltily, about taunting the foxthing tangled in the net. "It gives them a chance to escape. Or to strike back." He hesitated, thinking carefully about his next words.
"We're better than they are," he said finally. "To torture purely for the sake of torture ... well, I can't say that the thought of making them scream isn't one I enjoy. But we're not the monsters here."

"Yeah... yeah. You're right. I guess that's why you're the boss, Boss," Madison said with a crooked grin. "But that doesn't mean we can't hit hard and fast when the time comes, right?"
She glanced over at the window, as if half-expecting something to come out of the darkness and give them the chance. Nothing happened, though. "That's not weird, right? Heh, I used to have a real clear idea of what was weird and what was okay. Me: weird, but pretending to be okay. Faking it. If the other girls found out... and now that's all gone. Poof. I never liked it anyway."
There was something weirdly liberating in that last statement.

"Now that I've got absolutely no problem with," Jordan said with a wicked grin. "Scary stories coming to get them." He had to admit that he liked the idea of turning the tables, of being as scary a myth as the thing in the closet that frightened human children.
He chuckled. "Even if it is weird - who cares? I think this is plenty weird, and I'm pretty much good with that. Faking normal was pretty boring anyway."

"Faking normal sucked. Problem is, I like... did it for a really long time. It's kinda hard to figure out what's really me now, y'know? I guess leaving everything behind helped a lot... and forgetting. Stupidly. Forgetting high school and everything and just being A-2 for a while..." Madison shook her head, but she was smiling. "I dunno if I'd recommend it to other people, but..."

"I'm still figuring out who I actually am too," Jordan agreed. "Seeing who I was when I didn't have any idea who I was - that was kind of a shock. Kind of jolted me out of old bad habits, to a degree. Still have to work on some things, but, well. In spite of the almost getting killed a few times thing, life's been better than it was before." He laughed.
