"Have the others," she continued, as if he hadn't spoken, still staring at the beast, "seen it yet?"

"No, they're not back yet," he replied, wondering how long it could do that vile deed. It was probably the most disheartened he'd been in his entire adulthood.

"Ah." The cat finally concluded its business; it ran down, changing its mind about the roots, and renewed its attack, caterwauling a dreadful ruckus. Her eyes followed it every step, and there she stood, silent, as if she were weighing up some important decision.
Then, she moved. "Thank you," she said, and picked up the flint to splash down into the water again.

His heart soared with hope and love for his darling lifemate. That weight was no longer there, and the cat was back to much less horrifying activity. "Okay, I'll bring it back to the store," he said enthusiastically, his gaze adoring, before he turned to the other silvery creature and once again, picked it up kicking and screaming by the neck. "Ghd nhght swhthrt!"

"Yeah, yeah, whatever," she said absently, climbing back onto the roots and replacing the flint, all business now - though an observant spectator might have noted that she'd nimbly sidestepped all evidence of the leftover unspeakable even as her eyes never left the newly notched roots.

Rise proceeded with a wide, sentimental smile - well, as wide as he could manage with a fiesty owlcat in his mouth. In his dutiful, affectionate way, he released the owlcat briefly (it immediately got to maiming the nearest root, predictably), and called back: "Don't sleep too late, dear!"

"Mhmph." Was all she deigned.
Just before he wandered out of earshot, she raised her head and called, "By the way - call me when the others get back."

Again, that sentimental smile took over his face (much to the anger of the owlcat, because his teeth shifted when he did that, not that it ever stopped being angry), and he nodded enthusiastically at his lifemate, though by now he was just a shadowed blob amongst the trees. So, Cue was right - Grey had just seen the new critter and she was already taking a deeper interest in the activities of others around her! He trotted along, toting the frenzied blue blur merrily back to the shopfront. It might not be long before babies now...
