Evelyn smiled weakly at her friend, wiping her eyes before tear spilled over. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be bringing down the mood like this. I’m so glad he doesn’t hate me.” Evelyn’s hand went to grab her hair and tug—a nervous habit she had never kicked—but found no hair where she was reaching. Realizing how strange she probably looked with her hands in the air, she dropped them.

“Alright. I’ll settle,” she said, after considering it for a moment. “I’m not an entirely horrible person. But I am extremely silly, exceedingly worrisome, and occasionally completely peculiar, not to mention I let my imagination run wild. I’m so grateful to have a friend as wonderful as you.” Evelyn smiled at the High Priestess, so glad for the company.

"You forgot," the Priestess beamed, "Incredibly sweet, and cares rather too much about everyone and everything for her own good. Now, if those tears have dried for now at least, we can go back to - oh! I've had a wonderful idea!"

Lorika kept her smile up, but her eyes were fixed intently on Evelyn's face, watching for any signs of discomfort. "This is a party, right? And what do people do at parties? Mingle! If it'd help you get to feel more comfortable, we could go over to him tonight and just have a nice, casual chat. No pressure, and me there to support you. And he can't exactly whip out his sword and kill you here in front of everyone, can he? ...What do you think?"

At Lorika’s suggestion, Evelyn’s demeanor changed entirely. She started bouncing on her toes excitedly and grabbed Lorika’s hands. “Oh, do you really think that would be okay? That sounds so wonderful, Lorika! With you there, I know it’ll go smoothly. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

"It's no problem!" she giggled, grasping her hands back, "It'll be fun! The elves tell some really fascinating stories. But first we have to find them..." she said, looking around, getting up momentarily on tiptoes to peer above the crowd. "Wherever Jessie is, Cressa usually isn't far behind. I saw her wearing the most fantastic mask earlier, with really tall feathers, but I can't see anything from here... let's just head back the way we came."

She and Evelyn walked hand in hand back through the crowd, in what was roughly the direction they'd come. It took them a couple more minutes, by which time the dark elves had fallen into emulating the silly bopping uncoordinated dancing the humans around them stuck to. It was an awful lot more fun than it looked. Cressa had erupted into giggles, and as the ladies came into line of sight, she collapsed in fits of laughter against Jessie's shoulder. He, similarly, was laughing uproariously, flashing his pearly white teeth as he leaned against her for support, one arm around her waist.

"Yo-ho!" cried Lorika as they drew near.

"A-haha! Ahoy!" Cressa returned, barely able to stand upright.

"What's all this? Are we on a boat?"

"The next best thing, Cap'n J!" Lorika grinned back at him, playful, "I spied ye off the starboard bow, and thought I'd come over for a grand old chat. I can see you're having the most fun of anyone here!"

"And I see you've brought Evelyn along to watch us embarrass ourselves dancing like humans," Cressa said, finally composing herself.

"I have indeed!" Lorika replied, as casually as she could, "Jessie, I believe you've met Evelyn, haven't you?"

"Oh yes, of course we've met," he replied with a gentle smile to the girl in question, followed by a small, respectful nod. "How are you keeping after your ordeal? Are you well?"

Evelyn laughed lightly at the pirate-y banter that allowed herself to be at ease around three of the most influential people at the temple. However, that changed quickly. She squeaked and turned red at Jessie’s question, glancing away for a moment before responding. “Yes, I’m fine, thank you. And I mean thank you.”

Evelyn made a vain attempt at a carefree smile, before reaching out to touch Lorika’s arm, hoping for her to lead them to a topic of conversation.

"There's no need to thank me," Jessie replied quietly, "I'm just glad to see that you've recovered. But the experience certainly gave us all a lot to think about."

Cressa drew herself up. "Hm! Speak for yourself!" she said, "Some of us do our best NOT to think about such dreary and depressing things. Some of us have better things to do than brood."

"And some of us can go one step further and turn a negative experience into a positive one," Lorika continued sagely, with an encouraging glance at Evelyn, "Evelyn was just saying to me that she might like to train with you, Jessie."

This was a surprise. "Oh?" he replied, fixing her with a gaze that was part simple curiosity and part deep-probing X-ray vision. Lorika immediately felt she might have said the wrong thing, as Evelyn might just crumble again if he fixed her with a piercing eye. Cressa jumped in before she could immediately deflect the conversation.

"Tch! Stealing my students now, are you?!" she cried, throwing her arms loosely around his neck. "If you're going to become my competition, I'm just going to have to throttle you in your sleep."

"Starting a new feud, Cressa? Aren't you busy enough with your fellow professor?"

This was unfortunately a fact. "Bahhh, I suppose I am. I suppose I can bring myself to share with my very bestest, most cuddliest friend in the world. You can have her in the mornings, I'll have her for her afternoon classes as usual. Deal?"

"Maybe we shouldn't talk about this just now," Lorika said hurriedly, "There's plenty of time to discuss this later."

"Hold on, both of you," Jessie said, holding up his hand for silence - which he got. He calmly continued. "You're both getting ahead of yourselves. We haven't even heard what Evelyn has to say about this."

He fixed her with another interested gaze, and Lorika touched her lightly on the shoulder. "You're right, of course. Evelyn?"

Evelyn watched the exchange between the trio in front of her with admiration at how at ease they were with each other. She didn’t even care that she was the topic of conversation. In fact, it wasn’t until Jessie actually spoke her name that she realized she was sitting back and letting other people make her life decisions for her again. She was allowing herself to be a child again. However, she couldn’t find any reason to disagree with anything they had been saying. Maybe she should let other people make her life decisions for her more often. Or at least let these three.

“Oh, yes, that sounds wonderful, actually. It works out very well,”
Evelyn said, smiling as gracefully as she could before turning to address Cressa. “And don’t worry, I won’t fall behind on my studies.”

Now Evelyn was just faced with actually sleeping and staying asleep, something she hadn’t been able to accomplish in the few days since the war. Her instructors would certainly be able to tell if she seemed too tired, and might attribute it to the double training.

"Then I suppose it's settled," Jessie said pleasantly, "When you're ready to begin, come down to the grounds after breakfast. Though once your training has begun, you mustn't expect me to go easy on you," he continued, a little more sternly.

"Oh come now, Jessie," Lorika laughed. She felt slightly nervous with the whole conversation, afraid that it might prod Evelyn in the direction of bursting into tears again. Then again, she'd have to harden herself up if she wanted to learn how to fight... "Don't frighten her off before she's even begun."

"I'm just saying, the warrior's arts are not for those unable to tolerate discipline," he answered, with the air of a patient teacher giving an explanation, "Though I'm not a cruel teacher by any means. There are many out there who believe the best means of instilling discipline is to instill fear, or pain... often, they go hand in hand. During my own training, it was a daily occurence for soldiers to get dragged to the side and thrashed."

"Oh dear...!"

"I suppose it was effective, in its own way. But it's not my way. You have nothing to fear from me, Evelyn, and neither do any of the other students," he finished.

Evelyn looked like she might burst—although into tears or shouts, it wasn’t clear. “They beat you…just because they thought it would make you a better fighter?”

That was the final straw for Evelyn. “Quelle cruauté! Cela ne peut être efficace!” Evelyn stopped herself before she began a rant in French. “I’m sorry, I forgot myself. I just…I can’t imagine beatings being effective.”

[Translation: How cruel! That cannot be effective!]

"Truth be told, it was not as bad as it could have been," he continued conversationally. Jessie didn't seem particularly bothered by the subject matter of the conversation at all. To him, it was just a fact - one from his past, nonetheless - and he told it a like an interesting anectode. "Believe it or not, the beatings I got at home were far worse. Where we come from, you see, the men are not allowed to use the cat o' nine tails. That's a holy weapon, in our culture, and it is reserved for our mothers."

"How on earth did we get onto the topic of torture?" Cressa butted in, "It's this kind of thing that gives our people a bad name up here. You're giving Evelyn the wrong impression."

"I wouldn't say Evelyn would be so quick to judge an entire people like that," said Lorika.

"You might be surprised how many would, seeing as you're a woman of such unattainably high morals."

Evelyn stilled at Cressa’s comment. Could Cressa and Jessie really think that she disliked their culture? She had to be very careful how she phrased this. “I once had a friend who belonged to a family in which torture was very prominent, if anyone bothered to look below the surface. No, not in the physical sense, but in a deep, psychological sense. Her father was especially cruel. Even when she was a child, her father would tell her daily how worthless she was. He would tell her how she had ruined not only his life, but her mother’s as well. She carried a guilt with her that ate her up from the inside out. By the time I met her, she was literally a shell of a girl…”

Evelyn paused, silently hoping she wasn’t being too morbid.
“I tell you this to prove a point. Every culture has something that seems bizarre and awful. I don’t believe in abuse in any way, but an entire culture cannot be blame for the actions of a few. Even if everyone in your culture acted as such, it still does not reflect the two of you. Cressa, I have been studying under you for quite some time, and while your methods are not exactly normal, you have never acted deliberately cruel to any of your students. And you, Jessie, I have heard many, many rumors about you—but none of them involved you senselessly beating anyone. That shows far more about your character, and thereby your culture, then anything else could have.”

The three instructors listened silently to Evelyn's tale. After it was done, Jessie continued to look at her intently, and was the first to speak. His expression was closed, and respectfully sad. "I'm sorry to hear about your friend's difficult and unhappy life. Such cruelty is totally senseless. I hope that she eventually manages to find some sense of inner peace."

"As do I."

"And thank you for your compliments - we both appreciate them, don't we, Cressa?"

"Oh, yes," she replied - but the look in her eyes and the faraway tone of her voice said that her mind was somewhere other than the conversation. "We're much obliged by your kindness. Tell me, Evelyn, would you be interested perhaps, as Xeiashi is, in learning something about the kinds of magic we practise deep below the earth?"

Evelyn’s eyes practically sparkled as she had to hold herself together and try not to jump around in excitement.
“Oh, yes! Very much! That sounds simply marvelous! I am always happy to learn something new—and of course, I’m certain Xei will be ecstatic.”

Distantly, she wondered if the blue-haired boy was even at the party, or if he was in the library somewhere with a book.

Cressa smiled a knowing, mischievous smile. "Well, then, I know what we'll all be doing next lesson."

Jessie glanced at her suspiciously. Of course, there were a lot of magics native to the underworld that were perfectly benign... but there were others that didn't bear thinking about. However, as he trusted Cressa, and was sure she knew what she was doing, he didn't pass any comment.

"I wonder how the Guardian is getting on..." Lorika sighed. "She looked like she was ready to cry just before she left."

'I heard my name...didn't I? It must be like sneezing when someone speaks your name. Funny how that workOH GOD, WHAT BROKE THIS TIME. PEOPLE ONLY SAY MY NAME WHEN THINGS BREAK. Gotta get to the party. Yeah, the party. Someone probably broke that wall again. Darned finicky enchantments. Have no fear, I am coming to repair thee, wall! Huzzah! ...aww, that's right, the Portal is ruined. Well, at least I grabbed a piece of the glass. Mirror world or not, there were some cool magics tied up in that. Why am I even working on this speaker thing when I could be doin...crap, I think I forgot something. Oh, the wall, yes. TO THE WALL!'

Following the overly hyper train of thought that could only belong to one wizard, the following orders were heard: "Deskbot, fold up, I have things to do. Nah, I think it's fine that the juice is going to shrink. It should be safe. Probably. Anyway, get yourself home, it's getting late anyway, and I don't want you to be busted by some party-crazy person. Anyway, I'm off!"

Of course, this person could be no other than Xeiashi, resident Mad Mage and possible SINner, depending on who you asked first. He had been building things in the library again, this time designing a smaller-scale magic speaker that would allow for many more speakers in the dance hall, and thus much louder music. The spell components, along with scraps of wall-rubble and a few samples of seawater and tree bark (another unfinished project) was quickly folded up into the reliable DeskBot's miniaturization area and stored safely. Pausing only to grab his book and oak shard from the floor next to the now-tiny Bot, Xei rushed out of the library as fast as his weak Spellcaster-legs could carry him. A few people almost got knocked over, judging by the sounds left in his wake.

Xei paused before the wide-open door to the banquet room. The room was packed, filled even, with bodies and dancing and the occasional intoxicating beverage. Xei ignored all this and instead focused on the walls, scanning for any break in the enchantments that Thomas had put up some months ago. Nothing seemed wrong, for some reason, so Xei entered the room to better examine them.

In hindsight, this was a bad idea.

It is not often that a crowd can be described as a sea of bodies, but the phrase definitely applied here. This was a sea with a very powerful undercurrent, and before long Xei was more concerned with staying upright amongst the jostling bodies than with any broken wall. Eventually, as if it were a large beast that found him unappetizing, he crowd spit Xei out in a suspiciously empty corner...that...had....

"Oh. Greetings Priestess, Cap'n Hawk, Professor....oh, HI Evelyn!..." 'wait a second...oops'

"Did......Did I interrupt something?"

This last was said with enough embarrassment that only a conjured sweatdrop could adequately convey it, though Xei was able to stop himself from making an illusionary one to get the point across.
