Tempest nodded, enraptured by the cadence of her words. "So, they're like, fated rivals?" he asked, nodding into his napkin. That sounded really fascinating. Even if it had a tragic ending, he bet that it was an exciting story! Like rip tides. He studied her expression again, hoping she was happier now, but that didn't seem to be the case. Setting his napkin aside, Tempest reached awkwardly across the table and patted her hand.

"Um," he said, blushing. "I think your story is really cool, and just because it has a sad ending doesn't make it a bad story." Hopefully this was the right thing to say. If it wasn't, then he was ready to go down with this sinking situation. Keeping his head above water was all he could hope for, really.

He glanced downwards. "The boy in my story, he winds up alone at the end," he confessed. "Because the sea takes everything from him. But I don't think that means I have to be alone. Because we're stories, but we're also us. We're living. And life's an adventure!"

He gave her a hopeful smile, trying to coax a response out of her. Tempest was personally thrilled with the world and everything in it, and he couldn't wait to see more of it - and to make friends to explore it with!

Fortuna offered him a smile and turned her hand over to embrace his when he told her of his story and how it ended.
“it seems we both have a sadness to us, but I hope that we always have each other.”

Her heart pattered quickly against her rib cage, the corset feeling suddenly very tight. She quickly released his hand, blushing and staring down at her plate.

“You give me hope that perhaps, our stories do not necessarily shape who we are as living beings. I hope my fate is not that of my stories. After all, I am far too scared to love, so that base is covered at least.” She bit her lip lightly and glanced past her plate to where his hand was, remembering the heat of it in hers and blushing yet again.

Tempest withdrew his hand slowly, cheeks burning with embarrassment. "Okay, cool," he said, after a long moment, and began to nudge the crumbs around on his plate. Why should it matter to him whether she was capable of love? Tempest was too young to think of such things... even so, it made his heart skip a beat.

The boy tugged casually on his collar, trying to let off some of the heat he felt around his neck. It wasn't really working. He glanced back over at her, trying to judge her expression. So long as she seemed happier, Tempest felt okay letting the subject matter drop. "Well, um," he said lowly. "Maybe we should go, leave the table for someone else...?"

Maybe back out on the street he wouldn't feel so stifled.

Fortuna noticed his flush and immediately turned a dark shade of red, blushing upon her blush. Which is just awkward she silently noted to herself, what was this feeling, so new, so scary? She pursed her lips in quiet contemplation, a somewhat flustered look crossing her face.

“I am so sorry, I shouldn’t have…” she turned her face away, her teal eyes staring at the floor. “I do believe we should allow another to sit in this place.” Fortuna felt as though he wanted to get further away from her, and wondered what she had done to make him feel that way, her mind drifting to her ‘bold’ move.

Fortuna gracefully stood, hand knotting itself in her dress. “Tempest, if I make you awkward in any way… just… tell me?” She reached out her hand, lightly grabbing his arm. “I would hate to lose you.” Fortuna’s other hand went to a bag she had tied around her sash and removed a intricate book mark made of an old book spine she had re-illuminated with water scenes earlier that week and had been carrying around with her for a while.

“I think it was fortunate we met, I didn’t know who I made this for.” She let go of his arm and offered the gift.

Awkward...? Well, yes, tempest was feeling awkward, but he wasn't going to tell her that! It would only serve to freak her out! Flailing slightly, the boy stammered, "N-n-no! You're fine. You're okay. More than okay. Great. Really. I'm super-glad I met you." He held up his wrist, showing off the bracelet she'd given him earlier in the morning. "And this is awesome! It's like we're tied together now."

He was feeling really good about that, actually. There were a lot of feelings that Tempest got from his story - adventure, curiosity, loneliness. But knowing that Fortuna was out there and she was his friend made him feel less lonely.

Taking the bookmark from her outstretched hand, Tempest's grin grew even wider. "This is... for me?" he asked, gesturing vaguely towards his chest. He held it up and examined it closer. The wave patterns seemed almost to dance before his eyes. "This is... really, really cool!" the boy exclaimed, tucking the bookmark into his own sash. One could never have enough water imagery - especially not when you were the sea's own son!

Fortuna looked down and smiled, a pretty blush covering her cheeks. “I do study under the greatest book doctor the city has ever seen.” She shifted awkwardly from foot to foot. “I should be getting back, he might wonder where I’ve gotten to for so long...”

So that was it. She should go, she was ready to go home… right? Fortuna pursed her lips and glanced up at him, the dim lights of the city illuminating her teal eyes, but in her opinion, compared to his they were dim. He was the sea’s son after all.
“So very blue…” her hand immediately shot up and covered her mouth, her light flush deepening to a dark rose. Her eyes darted away from his and landed on his bare feet instead. Fortuna was too mortified to say anything, and the sudden urge to bolt for home was very apparent.

Tempest blinked at her, not sure what all this blushing and prolonged eye contact business was about. "Like the sea," he confirmed with a nod, re: his eyes. Go figure how he knew that - Tempest had never seen the ocean.

"It was really nice to meet'cha, Fortuna," said the boy, wrapping his new friend in a quick hug. "I should get going, too, though." (More baked goods awaited him.)

He stepped back. "Anyway, if you're ever in Sutfirth, come find me. I'm helping out at the Drunken Playwright." He'd said it before, but it bore repeating. Just so she wouldn't have any excuse if she forgot it later!

He waved as he took off into the crowd. "Seeya 'round!"
