Callum didn’t have the same reaction to seeing Felix as Felix did to seeing him. Instead of instant displeasure, Callum say Felix as a beacon of hope that Layton was probably well somewhere. He had looked after his sister on the rainbow bridge, maybe he was doing the same now.

The blonde’s look of disgust came at the wet sand pit. His face twisted a bit in revulsion. The last thing he wanted to go was fall into the bit. He watched many fail at the attempt to cross, falling into the swampy mess in front of them. Others, like Keren, did well. Glancing at Felix, “we’ll talk more if we make it.”

Going through the items, Callum picked the stone plank. He didn’t trust his ability to pick up and toss rocks, or his agility in swinging. So the young man pushed his plank out. It balanced precariously over the swampy sand. Quickly, and with eyes shut tight, Callum dashed across the plank saying to himself “don’t look down. Don’t look down.”

When his feet touched solid ground, he opened his eyes and leapt away from the edge.

Mary waited until the rush died down. There was no point in trying to make it across with all those people going crazy to do so. So she waited calmly, thinking. She was incredibly creative, but it seemed like everyone had done everything already. She glanced at the boy who dashed across the plank and seemed to nod to herself.

Not the safest way, but Mary was a tiny girl, and certainly able to do this. She stepped up to the plank and calmly walked along it, arms slightly out from her sides. She kept her eyes on the plank, just to make sure, but it would look as though she did this all the time.

She gently hopped off at the other end and brushed her uniform off, ready for the next challenge.

Unfortunately for Callum, Felix had not seen Layton since the rainbow bridge incident. He had attempted to search for the younger girl while he explored the other outposts, but the Surrounding was a fairly large place filled with a substantial amount of people. Even if Layton and Felix coincidentally were in the same area, it still would have been difficult to pinpoint her. “How’s your sister?” he inquired, genuinely interested in the girl’s wellbeing. Callum and Layton were siblings, so he figured that they had reunited by now.

Felix scowled upon encountering the moat of sand. Sand? He hadn’t expected such an obstacle. Truthfully, Felix figured that the challenges would involve something like puzzles or riddles, but he supposed devising a way to cross the pool would involve a bit of thinking. He looked around, his gaze gravitating to the vines, rocks, and plank. While the plank was pretty heavy, it seemed more stable than the other two options. Felix tentatively kicked it with his feet and began to cross it, but after a few steps the plank already began to sink. “Crap,” he muttered and ran faster, scrambling across the plank until he just barely made it to the other side.

He eyed the sand with disdain.

The sand before Flannery was strangely goopy and inherently suspicious. She stared at until she was absolutely sure it wouldn't sprout tentacles and attack her before picking up a couple of convenient rocks to drop in. Just in case it was a monster, Flannery wasn't going to pass it by like a wimp. Of course not. Best to anger it, right?

But to her surprise, the rocks she dropped in neither angered a sand monster nor sank. Magical senshi rocks, then. But Flannery knew better than to marvel at the apparent wonder; instead, she got another rock to drop in, forming a sort of bridge for herself. She could hop it, couldn't she? If she slipped, Flannery would be in trouble, since she couldn't swim. But when had that stopped her? Never. Flannery took a breath and leaped. One rock, two rocks, three rocks…

Flannery stumbled a little on the way, but she managed to stay upright the whole way to the other side. Because she was Flannery Spicer, and Flannery Spicer was a winner. That was definitely why.

Getting across the moat was not a pretty process- especially in a few cases- and some people only got sand for their trouble, in heaping helpings. Still, nine people managed to make it to the other side in one piece, to find what looked like little more than a small hole in the ground. A small reward for so arduous a trek, but further examination would reveal a ladder carved into one side of the stone crevice beneath them. There was no way to tell how deep it went went, no guiding lights. The only thing that remained was to descend into the darkness.

THE STEPS OF KNOWLEDGE

The passage widened after several feet, before giving way to a room barely large enough for the nine of them. Circular stones set into the walls at even intervals provided enough light to see by. The floor dropped away sharply halfway across, making things even more cramped. Those brave enough to peer over the edge would see a short set of stairs set into the wall- some twenty feet beneath them. For a moment, it seemed that they would have to turn back.

What...

There was no one else in the room. Upon reflection, the civilians would realize that they weren't hearing anything, yet they could clearly understand words. Words in English, which was a promising sign. Were they on the right track after all?

What force and strength can not get through,
I with a gentle touch can do,
and many in the streets would stand,
were I not as a friend in hand.
What am I?

[PLAYERS: You must answer the riddle to advance, or no steps will rise up to meet your feet. Roll TWO 10-sided dice to determine how fast you are able to answer the riddle. The first number determines your place in line; the second number will be used only in the event of a tie-breaker.

The six quickest thinkers who answer the riddle correctly will find that the stairs rise up to meet them, then carry them away down into the tunnel below. After this, there are no more stairs — everyone remaining must turn back.

Others were going to answer before him, leaping to their responses where Veer hesitated a little, his eyes skimming over the words. Some glimmer of an idea gathered in the back of his mind, a reply on the tip of his tongue --

-- and once someone else said key, there was no way he was going to say the same thing. So he went with a different idea, still turning things over. Of course key had been the right answer, but he was contrary. He didn't want to conform with the crowd. He didn't want to sound like he'd been copying someone else.

And anyway, he could justify his own. "Well, I think it could be the wind. It fits the requirements anyway. I get credit for an unexpected answer?"

...not that it mattered anyway. He was too slow. Veer pulled a face and went to find something more fun to do.

Keren rolled her eyes. She knew this one! She knew this one super-well because it was one of her dad's favorites - usually when she forgot her keys, he'd make her answer it and Keren forgot her keys quite a lot Freshman year.

The brash basketball player elbowed her way to the front of the line, stopping only behind the schoolmarm-looking woman, Marienrode. Marienrode did not look like someone to cross, so Keren waited until her stair had vanished to look down into the trench and mouth the answer.

A key.

The effect was instantaneous. A stair rose up to meet her. Grinning smugly, Keren stepped firmly onto it. She was doing well so far - as she should be. After all, she was Keren Della-Blue! Nothing was beyond her reach.

Please continue to roll for your placement as blue and Silverah have done!

Remember, your character must answer the riddle correctly in order for their answer speed to count, so please post indicating your character providing their answer to the riddle. (Yep, even though everyone's probably going to have the same answer, you've still gotta do it.)

The mule will keep track of everyone's scores (see the above post) -- then, as soon as the mule has recorded you as safe or eliminated, you can feel free to edit in the results of your character's attempt.

A riddle? Aw, ******** that. Ricky could never figure those things out. Frustrated, he shouted his best guess at an answer.

Ricky guessed that it must be a p***s.

Unsurprisingly, Ricky was wrong.

The young girl thought about it, and thought about it, head tilting from side to side. She wasn't sure at first what it could be, but tried her hardest to figure it out.

...key...

Mary frowned, lilac eyes staring hard at the absence of stairs, as if that would help her. It didn't really. Mary had never been good with riddles, mostly because her mind always created really farfected answers.

Key.

She blinked as the stairs came up to her. Mary thought about it for a moment as she stepped on it, and realized that "key" made sense. It was either that or gateway or door.

Well she wasn't going to argue.

After the harrowing swing across that sand moat, Marienrode was quite sure her fun bucket was full for the day. She didn't want to leave, though, and there was no way back, so she continued on, her well-worn sneakers leading her down to the well.

She let those who wanted to go first, and headed down into the dark abyss; her palms were slick with sweat, it made the ladder difficult to hold on to. At least there didn't seem to be any monsters, no, only... darkness. That endless darkness, and the breathing of those around her.

The white-haired teacher started when her foot touched solid ground and not ladder rung. This deep into the outpost--she couldn't say how long they'd been climbing down, nor how far they'd gone--she felt like she should have seen slick dew, but there was nothing, just lights set into the walls and a sharp drop halfway across the room. Marienrode bit back a bitter taste in her mouth that was equal parts disappointment and relief--disappointment that she'd endured a harrowing climb downwards and relief that she didn't have to do anything else.

Then there was that voice. But it wasn't really a voice, was it? Marienrode didn't hear anything, not with any of her five senses. The words just appeared, in her mind:

What force and strength can not get through,
I with a gentle touch can do,
and many in the streets would stand,
were I not as a friend in hand.
What am I?

"Elementary," she said aloud, and then thinking that she might have to answer it the same way that she'd heard it, so as not to give it away, she thought: Key.

Like magic, the stairs rose up to meet her; looking behind her for just a moment, she stepped onto them and descended into darkness.

It took a moment for Joshua to get it. Almost too long, in fact, as he repeated the riddle in his mind, then, finally, his mind clicked.

A key. Many would end up locked out on the streets without one... It was the part that had finally made it all click for him.

The last set of stairs rose for him, and he made his way up.

Down in that cramped space it was hard to Callum to immediately come with an answer. His mind was racing about so many other things, like what to say to Felix other than “uh.”

The space was so small, that while he was thinking about the answer to the riddle (solving it was the only way to get out), Callum could’ve sworn something or someone touched him. He skittered closer to the wall, breathing hard. The space was so claustrophobic, he wished he knew what the key was to getting out.

Then it hit him, the answer was key. Stairs came up to Callum, and he took at very cautious step onto them.

When Felix saw people beginning to line up to answer the riddle, he already knew that he wouldn’t be fast enough. Athletics had never been his strong point. Sure, he enjoyed digging, which involved some labor, but it wasn’t like the lad spent most of his day digging trenches in the backyard or wherever else he was allowed to dig. He watched as the others ran past him at speeds he could only hope to attain and answered the riddle, the stairs taking them away to the next room.

Looking a bit more miffed than usual, he sighed and turned around. Perhaps he would try to find Layton instead.
