Bela stared at the smoke, holy crap! It had a face, she shook her head she was just seeing things. She was looking around unsure if she should whack at the smoke or hide from it. You can't really hit smoke though can you?

She frowned this was getting a little silly. Even for a dream or a story, she sighed trying to find her way to a safer place so she could figure out what to do. For now her best option was to hide she thought, and then figure out how to get out of this. Of course trying to hide ended up with her inhaling more smokey stuff than she'd liked. She sat coughing when she got in a bit fresher of air hoping to refill her lungs with 'good air'.

[Felicia is Defending!]

Her hand still curled tightly within Grant's sleeve, Felicia continued her search for Gilbert, though her progress slowed significantly when the smoke within the room seemed to increase at an alarming level. It was no longer a case of a troubling mistake, but actual danger they were facing now, and she hadn't even noticed the ghastly faces imprinted within the smoke! Her wrist pressed to her nose and mouth, the poor girl coughed, eyes watering as she struggled to breath past the choking plumes that were filling the kitchen. "I can't see anything," she admitted softly to the boy she was still clinging too, shutting her eyes against the sting of the smoke. "Gilbert!, where are you?"

She was reduced to feeling her way around the kitchen, though with both hands occupied it was her toes that tested the path before her, steps slow and careful. She couldn't breath though, and barely a five minutes past having noticed the smoke in the first place she was wheezing for breath, doubled over as she hacked and coughed to clear her throat.

Finally she dropped to her knees, releasing her hold on Grant as she fell, though her palm did slide down his side, making it obvious where she'd gone, though not on purpose.

The air was a little clearer down here, and curling into pained ball she managed to get enough air usable air for a full breath, gasping past the burn in her lungs until she no long felt like she was suffocating. It was stifling and hot, but she could breath, and that was a major improvement.

It was then that she noticed the shapes in the smoke. Pale eyes rolling up to watch the roll of darkness above her only to scream as the image of a skull glared down at her. What was with this damn place?! Weren't they supposed to be safe with the those magical people around them? Didn't these buildings belong to them?!

It wasn't a conscious decision on her part as she fell back away from the smoke and crab walked rather awkwardly away from the haunting images in the smoke above her. Stopping only when she collided with a pair of legs, the shock of it making her squeak out in fright. She couldn't see who it was through the smoke, but the dress shoe's she was practically sitting on now were very familiar.

As the smoke had first began to spew from the oven Menthe, like many of the others was trying to rack her brain. They should get the cake out right? And if it was on fire.. patting was a good option! Just as good or better an option then trying to hit it with water. It was unlikely there was any grease in the oven, but Menthe was nothing if not overly cautious.

Grabbing the nearest rag she tried to fan the smoke as others tried to flee or open the window. When the smoke however.. acting unlike any smoke she'd ever seen in her life, she froze in her step, breath catching in her chest. Well until she began to sputter and choke.

Spiders.. skull faces.. horrible swirling demons of smoke. Menthe had heard about attacks, were they being attacked now! Oh god!

She was not a brave soul, so perhaps it was selfish but better to be selfish and live then die a hero. Quickly ducking beneath the nearest table, she cowered behind the table legs, her rag still waving softly. In a fire you should stay low to the ground to avoid the smoke. That'd work here.. right? Hopefully.

Well, it certainly didn't take long for everything to go to hell in a handbasket.

Before he knew it, there was smoke furling up to the ceiling and the cake -- frankecake -- was apparently toast before he ever began. This wouldn't have been so bad if opening the window had actually done them any good; rather than granting a reprieve from the thick, black smoke, it only seemed to intensify. Gilbert had his arm up over his face, ducking down to avoid the worse of the smoke, and so he didn't notice immediately that there was definitely something afoot.

Now, he'd seen the giant space whale, and he'd been on the rainbow road. He remembered everyone turning funny colors, and he'd heard about the attacks. Still, there'd been part of him that was still clinging to the last shred of reality, that was denying magical demons and monsters were preying on them, because he hadn't seen them. He'd heard about them, and he'd talked to people with the intent to find out more, but he hadn't really seen them. The crazy shape and skulls swirling around in the smoke definitely weren't normal, however, and neither was the way they were dive-bombing people and trying to get at them.

Someone backed up into him, damn near in his lap, and he grunted. He brought his arms down, keeping his head low and in her hair -- hers, smelled like a girl -- hands gripping her shoulders. This was, he told himself, so that it was easy to speak directly into her ear -- "Get low to the ground and stay there. Belly-crawl to a door or something."

This information dispatched, he reached down and tugged his shirt up over his nose, knowing that it wasn't an effective screen but not really able to do much else about it. If he'd been able to get ahold of a wet towel that would be better, but his options were sort of limited and chaos was ensuing.

Gilbert's main priority? Getting himself the ******** out of there before he choked to death. If he could direct people out and clear the way a bit as he worked his way out, excellent. If not? Well, he'd come back with help, such as: someone who knew what the hell was going on. Gilbert wasn't noble by any means, and he knew he would be just about no use to anyone dead, and so his number one priority, as always, was himself.

He balled his hand into a fist and swung it toward one of the smoky skulls, annoyed when his knuckles seemed to actually scrape something before it dissipated in front of him. Though he had his shirt over his mouth and nose, he still inhaled enough smoke to cough, lungs and eyes burning equally from the contact.

All right, head down, aim for the door. He could remember which direction it was in -- upside of being a cop, you took in your surroundings and didn't get ballsed up in the middle of a crisis -- but it was getting there that was going to be the problem.

Gilbert did 2 damage to the youma.

Something slammed the window closed after him. He felt the force, and froze.

Oh...

Oh, <********>. Logic said that something had gotten in, through it was logic that had gotten him in trouble in the first place. But that bit of logic proved itself soon enough, when the smoke turned thick and.... alive.

Fuuuuuck.

"Get out of here !" Through this wasn't Joshua's initial plan, his hand reaching for his side, only to meet smoke and air. Of course... He had left his toolbelt back in 'his' ******** his life.

So instead his hands closed on a wooden spoon and he flung it at the shapes that had started to surround him. If he kept them busy, the others could get out, right ?

Through, the more he did that, the more smoke he breathed in, setting him off in deep coughs as his lungs tried to expel it... only to end up breathing it in more.

Joshua did 4 damage.

The window slammed shut, and Jasper had been just about to turn around and warn people about the dangers of slamming things when the whole bedamned world had turned upside down -- and then something happened. The slam came with a sense of force, of something changing; his detective instincts clued him in that something had changed a moment before smoke began pouring into the room.

That was easy enough to deal with; he'd been in a burning house before. He pulled his undershirt up over his nose and mouth as quickly as he could, wincing as the motion made his once-dislocated shoulder twinge. The cake was burning, sure, but it shouldn't have produced that much smoke. He waved a hand in front of his face and growled before the smoke started doing some crazy s**t.

Waving a hand wasn't going to cut it. Not when the smoke formed faces and tendrils and skulls. And started attacking people.

Jasper put a table between himself and the smoke, skirting around it as quickly as he could -- and then picked up a knife that had been left forgotten on the table. A couple of quick slashes at a smoke tendril warded the thing away from him, where it had presumably been reaching for his throat, or face...

And while it hadn't attacked him, his lungs began to burn. The smoke was thick, and his teeshirt wasn't. He was going to have to find fresh air, and fast.

Jasper did 4 points of damage to the youma.

Cameron wasn't even slightly surprised to see that the cake had gone up in smoke. It was a new tune, but it was the same result from the many cake explosions he'd had in the past. This was really enough to push the man over the edge and he began to pace back and forth. It was a bit much to say he needed that cake, but he ******** did. That cake was supposed to be the one bright side of his crappy prison life. Did the cake really have to be a lie?

There were faces and eyes in the smoke, just like the giant arachnid and he was none too pleased to see it. It didn't take much for Cameron to practically growl when it happened again. He was getting tired of this bullshit ruining his life, and taking his cake away from him so he slammed his feet against the floor as he bound across it towards the smoke.

Close enough. How much of his life made sense now? Absolutely none. Right in check, Cameron grabbed a bowl of left over batter and threw it at the smoke. The clear message here was: ******** you smoke, give me back my cake. He was tired of all these senshi lies.

His actions weren't entirely regret free, his body cursing him as he inhaled a large amount of smoke and began to cough heavily. It was hoarse and loud and it felt rather painful as Cameron's hands pressed against his chest. ********, it felt like he was dying. He had to lean back against a nearby counter, his body clinging to it as he cursed the senshi under his breath. Cameron really could go for that slice of cake right now.

(Oh so manly Grant is attacking.)

Grant was not exactly sure what was going on. There must have been a whole lot of smoke in the room to make them all start hallucinating so quickly. Or maybe it hadn't been as quick as he realized. His watch was broken anyway, it had stopped working upon crash landing here and he hadn't thought about it since. Time was not his greatest concern.

The girl at his side, who had somehow slipped away from him and was now presumably on the floor, was his greatest concern. Followed quickly by all the other people in the room.

"I'm sorry, I thought the window would help! It was a good try though!" He called quickly. He moved to feel around for Felicia, hoping he didn't touch anything on her that he shouldn't be touching. He got down to his knees to avoid the smoke, coughing and feeling his lungs beginning to burn.

He found a mostly unbroken egg on the floor, and, in an effort to do something, threw it in the direction of the smoke billows. They were looking oddly... creature like. He hoped the egg might disperse the smoke a bit, though why he hoped that was anyone's guess.

Firefighters did not often fight fire with eggs.

"Felicia, ma'am, are you alright? Where are you? Is everyone okay?" He was hearing odd sounds, and seeing strange movements and blurs. It was hard to believe what his senses were telling him.

Maybe if he got to the sink and used some water... there had to be a sink, right? And where there was smoke there was fire. Water seemed the next logical step in all this.

  5. Menthe
  6. Joshua
  7. Bela

  9. Ricky

Attacking yielded mixed results. On the one hand, their blows seemed to swipe right through the attacking creatures, with no satisfying slap or smack of connection. On the other hand, as arms and hands and, in one case, an egg went through the monsters, they dissipated into the smoke around them, fading the smoke in the room to a more hazy level and a less opaque one.

The result was much-thinned, the smoke fainter now, making it easier to pick out the glowing Leo icons on all the technology. Things in the distance -- like, say, a door -- were still obscured, but at the very least they could try to orient themselves based on where the stove was, the hooded vents above, the refrigerating units...

One of the shapes, though, had taken on a more solid feel. The face hovering in the smoke in front of Felicia turned darker, dissipated smoke swirling into a form that was more human. The loose shape of a man with glowing eyes. He grinned down at her...

...and exhaled, slowly, smoke hissing between his teeth and into her face, a heavy cloud that left her coughing and unable to breathe for a moment.

Perhaps, however, the cursing of Ilmenite in his ears had some effect. Instead of chasing his advantage, he turned in place to very briefly study the room around him, taking in the civilians and the shape of the place. The cake was almost fully charred in the oven. At the very least, no more smoke was pouring out of there.

Smokey stepped toward the tantalizing smell of burnt cake in the oven, his shape becoming obscured as he moved. Once again he dissolved into teasing, mocking shapes that taunted and prodded the civilians, pushing and shoving at them. Now, however, they seemed less solid. A hard look and they'd be able to see through their attackers. The youma was still there, but he was definitely weakened.

((Felicia! Take 3 damage from smoke inhalation.

Everyone! Once again, make a decision:

Offensive - it's clear you're getting somewhere! Attack the youma again.
Again, roll 2d6. The first die is damage done to the youma, the second die is damage you take.

Defensive - don't attack, instead hunt for a solution or cower beneath the smoke.
If you choose this option, roll 1d6, and only take damage if you roll a 1 or 2.

Remember: if you go under 10 HP, you are not dead, but you are unconscious!

Thus far, civilians have dealt a whopping 18 damage to the creature!))

The smoke was thinning. Slowly, at least it seemed. He hadn't seen the monster itself form upon Felicia, but he did notice the smoke thinning a bit.

So he lashed out at the shapes again, the best he could, but it wasn't as good at the first attempt - the smoke was getting to him, the shapes blurring, his throat getting raw from all the cough.

H-He needed to get out of here... Hopefully he'd brought everyone some time to find the door.

[Attacking!]

Hands came to rest upon the girl's shoulders and she gave a startled little squeak as a voice sounded right beside her ear, jerking automatically before the familiar baritone of the voice made her still. It was Gilbert, and with his presence came a certain measure of relief. Naive, but very true. He was older, he was an authority figure, his voice sounded really nice. Wait.. That last didn't have anything to do with it. Frowning, she nodded wordlessly to his instructions and moved so he could get to his feet and move away. Obviously going off to find a why to make this all stop.

Through the smoke she could hear a polite voice calling for her, and her head turned to glance in that direction despite the fact she couldn't see a damn thing. "I'm fine Grant, you ok?" His second question gave her a little more trouble. She was by.. cabinets, but there were cabinets everywhere in the kitchen. "I don't know, near the big sinks I think." Think being the operative word there.

She was taking Gilbert's suggestion to help, crawling low to the ground in the direction Grant's voice had been coming from, when something a little more substantial then a smokey image formed right in front of her face. It had her freezing in place as she watched the wispy image appear to solidify and grin at her, hazel eyes going impossibly wide. Her entire body tensing up with the sudden wash of panic shooting through her.

Smoke engulfed her face and upper body from the mouth of the thing, blinding the poor girl and sending her reeling back with a sudden scream that dissolved into desperate hacking as she fought for air. Eyes and lungs burning as she collapsed to the floor with fingertips clawing and clutching at her throat. She couldn't breath!

It was then the severity of the situation really sank in. Her lungs and ribs were aching with the effort to breath, and the first few breaths of clearer air burned, pulling tears from her eyes. They were in serious trouble, she was in serious trouble. Though scared as she was there was a building, panicked rage raising within her. How dare this thing attack her!

It wasn't logical, nor smart, but she lashed out at the departing monster. Pushing up on her twos to dart after it so she could swing blindly at the thing as it wandered away from her. It wasn't solid though, and her body seemed to fall right through it, the startled gasp that followed sucking in a fresh lungful of choking, black smoke. God damnit!.

For the second time in what felt like a minute the younger girl was on her knees, gasping and coughing for air. Red rimmed eyes wide and terrified. She felt sick, and worst, completely dizzy. The room around her spinning as she struggled to keep relatively upright. It was only smoke, but Felicia was hurt.

(Grant has to wonder what they put in this cake to make the smoke so acrid. And volatile. Not to mention rude.

"Oh no!" Grant saw her and the smoke monster thing as a particularly specific puff of smoke was forced into her face. He was still battling with the idea that the smoke might actually be a creature, and not just one of this things that were he stared at something too long it began to look like something else. Like seeing bunnies in the clouds, except this was monsters in smoke.

But, once again, he had more important things to think about.

Denial was really hard when there were almost solid facts swirling right in front of him, menacing these people he was considering his friends, though most of them he didn't know or had only just met. They were all in this together, and that made them family. Brothers in arms, as it were. Friends drawn together by a terrible situation. One he did his best to make better.

At the moment, that goal was a little difficult.

Hurrying to Felicia's side, he felt something shove him and he hit the ground hard before he made it to her, though he quickly pushed his hands under him to get himself back to his feet. He had felt something under him when he fell, but if it belonged to the youma or to someone else or what he did not know. His mind told him he must have crushed someone’s foot, as it was the first and only logical explanation that came up. And he liked to keep things logical.

"Sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going," he said, though he didn't see who he might have accidentally bumped into. Or that he had actually been pushed by the smoke, and was now apologizing to his attacker. He reached Felicia’s side, though, looking at her in wonder and concern, tugging at his shirt and ripping a large cloth from it to help filter the smoke she was breathing in.

"If you don't mind, breathe through the cloth. You're very brave!"

Ricky wasn't one to learn from his mistakes, and continued to swing at the smoke monster while screaming various cusses at the top of his lungs, inhaling a fair amount of smoke in the process. In one of his final swings before a coughing fit got the best of him, however, he shouted something non-profane.

"Dad burn it! Someone turn on them mother ********' air vents!" he shouted, pointing to the hooded vents over the oven as he hurled over, coughing. Okay, so maybe it was a little profane.

From beneath the table Menthe didn't have the best view ever, but she had noticed the smoke swirl and dissapate if only a little. But it seemed to collect again. The room was so full of smoke she really couldn't see much more than 'movement' and so far she was safeish in her hiding spot.

So many people were fighting back... Trying to take out the monster while she quivered and shivered beneath the table. She felt terrible not to help... but.. fighting. She was having a hard time willing her body to move at all and not scream.

And then she heard it... The slew of profanity followed by a suggestion that actually made sense to her. Maybe she actually could help.. even if only in the simpliest of ways. Her hands pressed against the cool ground, not giving herself the time to think because there wasn't anyway she wouldn't scare and worry herself into not doing it if she thought about it.

Heeled shoes clicked as the short secretary ran towards where the stove should be, her hands trying to reach up high and search for a button or switch. On her tippytoes, trying not to be burned by the heat radiating from the stove, she finally found the switch flipping on the vents above the stove, as Ricky suggested.
