"You would say that, wouldn't you?" Draconis replied. "You just can't stand the thought of not being loved. It's just the sort of ego boost someone like you needs. Madame, as much as I hate to break it to you, there's no way my feelings for you could ever resemble anything akin to love."
Draconis knew what he really should have said; he knew what any other normal fox would have said. He could have said that he loved her. He could have said that they were meant for each other. After all, who else would love them, if not each other? But the thought of merely loving Ginevra never crossed his mind. What they had was more than that, it was deeper than anything common foxes felt for their mates.
So what difference did it make if he said it outright, or even admitted it to himself? There was no point because deep down they both knew the truth. There would never really be anyone else for them.

Ginevra just smiled as her own thoughts brought a sense of calmness over her. Her own thoughts were quite similar to Draconis's. "You, good sir, are more wrong that you know. But fine, continue on believing what you will. Until next time, Draconis." Quite suddenly Ginevra licked his cheek and then quickly stepped back and took flight.
It didn't matter where she was going, and she didn't bother to look back to see the 'Phim's reaction. The sound of his beating wings told her that, for whatever reason, Draconis decided to follow, and that was good enough for her.

[TIIIME for SKIPS!]
One cold night, within a cave. They were happy for once. Or perhaps the word peaceful was more accurate. And then Ginevra went and kind of ruined it.
"Where do we stand? As a couple, that is."
What sort of a dumb question is that? Something only a vixen would think of asking, surely. Something only a girl would be able to answer, too. Ridiculous. He didn't know what to say to something like this. What did she want to hear? What's the conventional answer? Draconis just didn't understand!
His confusion was plain on his face. After a few moments he answered, in a rather dry voice, "Can you make this a multiple choice question?"

Ginevra stared, long and hard, for a few moments. What? "You're joking, of course," she said. "Are we or are we not life mates? With all the exclusivity and supposed love that comes with the phrase. I suppose you do know the basic definition of the phrase, correct?"
His silence annoyed her more than anything else. Ginevra was not known to be a patient vixen. "Should I take that as your answer, then?" She asked, her voice quiet. "It should be immediate, and yet you doubt... What? What aren't you absolutely sure about, Draconis?"

Draconis glared at the 'Daeva. "Don't make such assumptions," he growled. "And can you honestly tell me that you know, one way or the other, your own answer to this question? And what are your reasons for it? How could you possibly expect to live the rest of your entire life based on this hastily-made decision? Things said in the heat-of-the-moment are almost always regretted in hindsight."
He was trying to make her see reason, but it obviously wasn't working. She was just getting really angry, really fast. "Look, I don't mean to upset you, Ginevra," he said quickly. "And you know there is an... extent to which I do... care. But you expect me to instantly set aside all other vixens for something that may not even be real?"

Ginevra's mind caught one thing in Draconis's entire spiel. Don't get her wrong, she listened to everythig, but then he said that one phrase. "Other vixen?" She repeated. "Is that what this is really about? What other vixens do you even know? No one, certainly, that could even come close to comparing to me!
"And what makes you think I made this decision with any amount of haste? I have been thinking about it for weeks now!"

"Oh, so you get time to think about it all and I don't?" Draconis argued. "And don't tell me it's something I should have instinctively known and pondered on my own. I already think it's a ridiculous question overall.
"And, to be clear, are you implying that I don't have any other female friends? Vixens that I could also potentially learn to love?" He questioned. It was a stab at his pride, his manliness. Of course he could find plenty of other vixens who would love a chance to be with him. "Feel free to think that, if you must drag me down to your own level in order to sleep at night."

"Drag you down to my level?" Ginevra repeated, eyes flashing and anger clear. "As in you think you can get another vixen just fine, but I certainly can't find another fox? Do you really believe my happiness and loneliness to be so dependent upon your existence? Because you're completely and utterly wrong. And I can prove it to you."
Ginevra was lying. She had no idea what she was saying or where she was going with any of it. And chances are high that would soon become a problem of some sort. Well, once he started questioning everything she said, that is.

Draconis shook his head slowly. "I don't think you can prove that one way or another, Ginevra." He told her. "But, feel free to humour me. How exactly are you planning on showing me that you can find another fox, without of course becoming life mates with him instead of me?"
"Oh, so you care now whether or not I'm your life mate?"
She was so infuriating sometimes... "I'm not saying that," Draconis said quietly. "But obviously it'd be a little counterproductive. This entire conversation was about us becoming life mates, after all. What would be the point of you ending up in love with some other fox? There is none, exactly. Regardless, I still don't see how you could even start 'proving' anything to me."
So, perhaps Draconis was irked by the thought of Ginevra being someone else's life mate. Perhaps if she was just temporarily with someone, he wouldn't mind. But he knew she could never be anyone else's actual life mate. Just as he couldn't imagine actually life mating with any other fox. But if he knew all this, why couldn't he have just said so in the first place! Draconis inwardly cursed his own pride while he awaited Ginevra's answer.

What to do, what to do... What could she do to prove her point? And why was it fair that only she had to do something, while Draconis could sit off to the sidelines and watch her triumph or fail [but mostly triumph]? It wasn't! And a plot formed in her head.
"A bet, Draconis," she said, rather smug. "We're both to go out into the world, make friends, and find someone willing to be life mates with us. Although, don't actually agree, because as you said, that would be counterproductive. We have to introduce these foxes to each other, first one to do so wins."

Draconis' eyes narrowed. "That's an awful idea, Ginevra," he informed her. He may have been a bit nervous, he was never the best at meeting people, making friends and the like. He had known Ginevra since childhood, there was no one else. If only he had just agreed to her question at the beginning of the conversation. But there really wasn't any chance of going back now. "How are we supposed to successfully woo other foxes after introducing them to each other? No one will fall for someone who already almost has a life mate and is stupid enough to let the two meet."

Ginevra rolled her eyes. "Obviously we aren't going to tell them that we're... almost life mates." It was the most ridiculous thing, Ginevra thought, referring to Draconis as her 'almost-mate.' But he was insistent! "We'll just say we're close childhood friends. And then when we can finally leave them both for each other, they'll probably see it coming."
She allowed Draconis to ponder a few more moments before continuing. "Anyways, we'll need to set up ground rules. First, don't talk about this bet to anyone. Second, this whole fake relationship, from meeting to almost declaring life mates, must last longer than a week. Next, three days into meeting this fox or vixen is when we introduce them to each other. Sound good?"

Draconis just frowned as he listened to her. He still really didn't like the sound or thought of any of this. "Fine, sounds fine," he said. "It's a deal." He offered his paw for her to shake. "However, what about the matter of a prize? The winner of the bet must get something after all of his hard work, after all."
They were silent for a few moments, thinking about it. It was Draconis who finally said, "I think I got it. Once we are fully life mates, winner chooses where we live." Settling down in a specific place had been a point of argument for the two recently. This forest, that mountain, simply moving around all the time. Too many options and no one was ever happy.

Ginevra shrugged. "Good, then when I win we can finally return to that forest that I loved so much," she said with a smug grin. "I suppose I'll see you back here in a few days."
And with that, Ginevra took off, leaving Draconis on the ground staring after her again. This time, however, he didn't follow her. After a few moments, he flew off in a different direction, in order to search for a vixen of his own liking.

"Draconis, these last few days have been... Wonderful..."
Wow. This vixen just went on for ages. Sure, Draconis had liked her well enough at first, well enough to use her as the vixen that would ultimately ensure his victory in the bet against Ginevra, but sometimes she just got really sappy and would say things like... that. He really hadn't taken her as the type at first. In fact, the vixen had reminded him a bit of a normal version of Ginevra. Passionate, independent, strong-willed, red. Then she went and said something like that. And this wasn't even the first time. At least Draconis could look forward to a life with Ginevra that will undoubtedly be sap-free.
Draconis just smiled sweetly in response though. Why bother giving anything away when today was the day he was supposed to introduce her to Ginevra? Today he would prove that self-righteous 'Daeva wrong. And this vixen can in know way catch on to any of it.
"I'm glad you thought so, Ezra," he responded in a fake-sweet voice. It was a wonder she even bought any of it. Then again, he had first appeared to her pretending to be the typical sweet, happy-go-lucky 'Phim. He had never promised Ginevra that he wouldn't lie and pretend to be someone he wasn't, after all. "And I am rather glad you agreed to come on this trip with me, so soon after meeting and everything. Are you positive that your parents are okay with this?" If Draconis could roll his eyes at his own words, he would have. As if he really cared. Even if this all hadn't been for the sake of a bet, Draconis never would have asked.
