It wasn't nice, either: bad enough that he was getting chewed out by his captain, but by a cat, too? Impossible to tell if he actually understood the words, but he could read Dahlia's tone. Smokey's eyes narrowed and he shifted, slowly, his bulk tilting down so that he could blow out a slow stream of smoke right into the poor cat's face.

Sensitive nose, take that.

Ilmenite huffed out a frustrated sound of his own and returned the favor -- a deep breath blown into the bulk of the youma's body, and it got the same reaction as a slap upside the head might have. A slight dissipation. A wince, like that was uncomfortable. Smokey straightened, scowling, and then sketched a mocking bow as Ilmenite turned his attention back to Dahlia.

"...we'll see how long it lasts. Sure there's nothing else you wanted to see?"

Sensitive nose indeed. As the stream of musty and thick smoke enveloped her, Dahlia could do little more then try to escape then unpleasant 'asault', a stream of almost sneezes sounding from her as she shook her head violently, her whiskers flaring unhappily as she tried to get the smoke out of her nose. Small sparks and light began to flicker on that forehead star, an annoyed warning sign. Really she was trying her best not to use it.

It brought her nothing short of pure petty delight to see the monster withdraw in what looked like mild pain as Ilmenite blew on it. Was it as simple as that? Remind her to bring a fan next time she was in the youma's pressence.

Her nose was still twitching uncomfortably, a paw reaching up to rub it mildly. "I'm certain. But don't tell me all you came for was a bow? If so no wonder it doesn't listen."

"What do you suggest I do, then? It's not like I can punch him in the face." Frustrated, Ilmenite grabbed her by the scruff of her neck to set her gently at his feet, and then stepped forward -- swinging a blow in demonstration. It got that same pained wince, Smokey dissipating around the blow and coming back looking fainter, but there was no satisfying smack of contact.

It didn't seem disciplinary, only...well. Petty, a bit. Petty and silly. If he'd been doing it in earnest, it would be embarrassing. He shrugged as he raised an eyebrow to Dahlia. "All ideas are welcomed. Even from a cat."

She hardly liked being handled by the scruff, trying to fight the instinctive urge her body gave for her to curl up. It wasn't as if it hurt, but at the same time... it made this particularly cat feel more helpless than she'd have liked.

Settled on her own four feet, she stepped back a little as Ilmenite gave his show, frowning a bit. "It's just like dealing with a child or an animal. Discipline misbehavior and reward the good. Positive and negative reinforcement." It worked with human adults too her experience, but this was hardly the time or place to bring that up.

"But I'm guessing you're saying you don't know how to discipline him in any good way."

"A fan perhaps. Or perhaps wasting his time with hour after boring hour of following him around and bothering him." She didn't know if any of the ideas were good ones, which perhaps lead to the softly frusterated statement. "He's your youma after all, shouldn't you know what he likes and dislikes?"

"It's not like he can talk." The urge to swipe again, to reach out and drag a hand through Smokey's bulk, was strong -- but also pointless, like thwapping a cat on the nose well after she's stopped clawing up the couch. It just would make him learn to twitch any time Ilmenite moved, not actually discipline in the moment...

In reality, what Ilmenite needed to do was build up his will, to exercise it more properly against the youma, but years of drinking and smoking didn't exactly help build up inner strength. Giving in to inner vices was his policy, and that didn't serve him well in this particular case. He'd argue, though, that it was worth it. Well, maybe he was right.

Another frown, a shift, the lighter twitching between his fingers, and his attention narrowed. "I could do that, though. An hour of following with one of those battery-operated hand fans. Next time..."

Drawing near to the captain's legs once more she didn't say anything, simply shaking her head a bit. The secrets and information of the world didn't always come from words and talking... though.. amusingly enough most of the lies did. Lies spilling from the mouth that were contridicted by the body.

There was so much that could be gained by simply watching.. listening. Did one ask a lover in detail how and where to touch or simply respond to shallow breaths and flushed cheeks. It might take a little work.. but it shouldn't be that hard to befriend a youma and to find out how it ticked. If one had the desire to that was. She didn't.

"I'm ready to go if you are." She offered softly, her tail swaying behind her back.

"..so be it, then." He didn't let her trail at his feet. Once again, Ilmenite leaned down to grab her around the abdomen and swing her up onto his shoulder, all but tossing her up there. She was a cat. She could take it.

"I hope you learned something, at least." Before she was even settled, he was on the move back toward the gates -- a hand swiping briefly down her spine to smooth away any annoyance before settling under her hind feet.

Oh she'd learned things indeed.

Things about the rift. About youma. About a certain captain. Perhaps she'd even learned something about her self or the way she should approach certain things in the future. But these were all thoughts to be hashed out when she was alone again, safe and curled on something comfy and beautiful.

Even being lugged up like some stuffed toy she didn't complain, simply thrilled to be getting out of the dark dankness of the Rift.

Maybe she could even find Zinkenite and charm some shrimp out of him. And a better answer then she'd ever managed to get from her smoking, sarcastic steed.
