If Sheridan had learned anything, it was that baking was a lot harder than it looked!
Somehow (miraculously), despite the incident with the vanilla, the spilled ingredients that littered the counter, and the batter that had missed the pan entirely, Sheridan managed to fill all the cups with the batter. He sure hoped they tasted okay; even though they had yet to be baked, the batter -smelled- good.
Okay then, into the oven right? Picking up the pan, Sheridan stepped toward the oven and slid the pan onto one of the racks. A moment's pause, then he set the timer before turning his attention to whatever Xiu was doing.
"What are you making?"
His head tilted curiously, his tail twitching with interest.

"The scream cheese icing!" Xiu chirped, switching on the electric mixer and beating the ingredients together, "It's not too sweet, so I like it better than just regular icing sugar and water." Of course, it wasn't a very healthy icing either, but...in moderation, it was okay! It wasn't as if anyone intended on eating the whole batch at once, after all.
That would be really bad.
After a few minutes, the ingredients began to come together in a nice, smooth icing. Shutting off the mixer, Xiu reached out an swiped her finger over some of the icing that was stuck it in beaters, giving it a taste. "Mm...tastes good to me! Give it a try?" She held the bowl out to Sheridan, and then glanced at the oven.
Only a few more minutes, and then they could check on the cupcakes! Then just came the icing, and they'd finally be done!

Ooooh, he supposed he should have guessed that was what she was making, she had said she was going to.
He was eying the mixture curiously, perhaps a bit warily, uncertain of what to expect. He had eaten scream cheese before, but never in the form of icing or on a cupcake. Well, he'd never find out if he didn't try it.
At Xiu's offer, he had paused a moment before reaching out, catching a bit of icing from the edge of the bowl on his finger. Another curious look, and then at last he tasted it. Ah, it was good! Sweeter than he had expected, but still very tasty.
"Delicious."
Surely it would go perfectly with their chocolate cupcakes, provided the cupcakes turned out alright that is.

Xiu beamed, looking pleased by his answer. She had found the idea of scream cheese icing to be a little strange at first too, but after she had made a batch of cupcakes and tried them with the icing, the baku immediately loved them. "It'll taste good on the cupcakes--I promise!"
For the next few minutes, she worked on cleaning up some of the bowls and utensils that they used, wiping up the counter while she was at it. However, she immediately stopped cleaning the moment the timer went off. "There we go! Ready to see how they turned out?" Trotting to the oven, she pulled on a mitt, opened the door, and drew out the cupcake pan.
...And miraculously, all the cupcakes looked like cupcakes!

Sheridan nodded, then did his best to help Xiu with the clean-up without getting in her way. Well it was his mess after all, he couldn't leave her to clean it up alone, even if she did say it was okay.
The cupcakes already smelled amazing, filling his nose with delicious scents. If the cupcakes tasted half as good as they smelled, well his stomach was already rumbling. And then the timer went off, and Xiu opened the oven door to release a wave of fragrance, causing him to pause in whatever he was doing at that moment and inhale the scent.
"They smell amazing."
And hey, they -looked- nice too, or at least they didn't look like big brown globs. Nope, they looked like cupcakes, delicious chocolatey cupcakes. Could he try one now, please?

Laughing at Sheridan's response, she set the hot pan on the stove and went to retrieve some cooling racks. "See? You did well, Sheridan!" She beamed, carefully pulling out each cupcake and setting them onto the cooling rack. Hopefully it wouldn't take too long before they could ice, and then they were done!
"Take your pick, Sheridan--do you want to ice using a piping bag, or just spread it over the top with a spatula?" The only difference would be how it looked, though in both cases, Xiu was certain that the cupcake would still taste really good.
Good thing she got those egg shells out.

Denied!
Awwww, he'd have to wait to eat one of the cupcakes it seemed. Though why he did not think about that in the first place was a mystery, did he expect the cupcakes to magically ice themselves? No, of course not, but he was haven't a difficult time being patient at that moment. Couldn't he just have one? He'd ice the rest, really he would!
He blinked, unsure of why she was taking them out of the pan and putting them on something else or what purpose it served. Why not just ice them in the pan? Did it change the cupcakes in some way?
"I...don't know, I've never put icing on anything before."
Blink blink. He may or may not have been thinking of just flipping the cupcakes over and dunking them straight into the icing, just maybe.

Noting the vaguely confused look on his face, Xiu grinned. "Cooling rack," She explained, pointing to the thing that the cupcakes were now sitting on, "If we iced them while they were in the pan, the icing would just all melt because the cupcakes are still so hot. So we're cooling them for a little bit!" Which wouldn't take too long, fortunately.
Since it didn't seem like Sheridan had a preference, Xiu decided to go with the spatula spreading method over piping. For one thing, the latter was--in her opinion--harder and bound to be messier. Besides, in this case, the appearance of the cupcakes definitely came second to the taste.
Grabbing two small spatulas, she picked up one of the cooler cupcakes and turned to face the dragon. "So, just like this." Lifting some of the icing onto the spatula, she turned the cupcake in her hand and spread the topping onto the surface of the cupcake. Fast and easy! "The faster we get this done, the faster you can try one!"

He watched her for a moment, pausing before picking up the second spatula and a cupcake of his own. Eating the cupcakes sooner certainly sounded like a good idea to him! Nom nom!
Scooping out a rather large glob of icing, Sheridan eyed the cupcake for a moment before plopping said icing on top of his cupcake. Would you like a little cupcake with your icing Sheridan?
"Like this?"
Setting the finished cupcake aside he picked up another. Oh Xiu, you expected this to be neater than the piping? Well at least thusfar the mess was limited to Sheridan's hands and not the counter or the floor.

...W-well, that was...a little much, but it wasn't that bad, right? ...Or maybe she should tell him. Grinning, Xiu held up her own cupcake to indicate the small cap of scream cheese icing on top. "Just a little less?" The good thing was that this icing wasn't too sweet--it wouldn't make anyone's teeth hurt (too much) if they had a little too much.
Sighing happily, the baku finished icing the last cupcake of her half, setting it back down on the tray. "There we go! Did you want to try one now...?"
Did she really need to ask?

A little less? Hmm, okay, he could do that. There was less icing on the next cupcake he did, though maybe just a bit more still than there was on Xiu's cupcakes. Hey, this part was fun, even if his hands were bound to be covered in icing by the time he finished.
The last cupcake finished and set on the tray, he turned to Xiu with a grin. If they hadn't looked and smelled delicious before, the cupcakes certainly did now. Try one you say? Yes please!
"Okay."
He nodded eagerly, picking up that first cupcake he had iced, that cupcake that still possessed it's massive mound of icing. Did he intend to eat it with all that icing on it? Why yes, yes he did. Nom nom!

That...that was a lot of icing. Xiu didn't say anything though--Sheridan knew full well how much icing was sitting on top of that cupcake (or rather, how little cupcake was sitting under that icing) so she figured he knew what he was getting into. Grinning, she gave a little shake of her head and picked up one of the cupcakes she had iced. Well, if they just looked at it...it looked like the perfect cupcake.
Hopefully it would taste perfect too.
"Ready?" She eyed it for a moment longer, and then took a small bite. She chewed the cakey piece thoughtfully, silent as she swallowed it. Then she smiled.
"Not bad! It's uh, a little vanilla-y, but..." It was still good, and still very much a chocolate cupcake.

Why yes, yes it was a lot of icing. Delicious, creamy icing over a heart of moist delicious chocolate cupcake. Hmm, not as chocolatey as he had hoped thanks to his mishap with the vanilla, but tasty nonetheless. Wait, had he already devoured that entire cupcake? Yep.
"Next time we should try chocolate icing."
And less vanilla, definitely less vanilla. Or maybe mint, or peanut butter, or...and his mind had gone off in thought of delicious cupcakes.
"Should we top them with something?"
He'd seen cupcakes with sprinkles on top before, or chocolate chips.

Xiu hummed thoughtfully at the suggestion, putting down her half of the cupcake (wow, Sheridan had scarfed his down!) and moving over to check her cabinets. After a little shuffling around, she managed to find some blocks of chocolate that she had stashed away for something like this. Of course, they wouldn't be putting whole blocks on the cupcake.
"Hold on a sec!" Pulling out a grater, she held it over a large plate and ran the chocolate blocks over the grater until she got a nice little pile of chocolate shavings on the plate. Tapping off any extra pieces that were still hanging onto the grater, she pushed the chocolate over towards Sheridan and the cupcakes.
"Sprinkle those on top?"

If ever there was any doubt that Sheridan liked cupcakes, it had been quickly dispelled. Knowing as such, it should come as no surprise that he was already debating munching a second cupcake. At least he was until Xiu starting rummaging in the kitchen again.
His tail twitched, watching. What was she doing? Ah, chocolate, surely she wasn't intending on putting all of that on the cupcakes, though whether he would have objected to this or not was something only he knew. Oh, chocolate shavings!
The dragon nodded eagerly, picking up some of the shavings and sprinkling them over the top of the cupcakes. Oh yeah, he was most definitely eating a second cupcake now, yep!
"Do you want another one?"
Well he wasn't going to scarf a second cupcake without first asking if she wanted one too, that would have been impolite. Maybe he hadn't noticed she wasn't finished with her first one yet. Sheridan, not everyone chomps cupcakes like you do!
