The last sentence was nervous, as if he was attempting to convince himself.

The hunchback glanced up at his Master, brows furrowed as he took in the Sloth's expression. Rolling his eyes, his hands raised, 'You-are-good-Sloth. No-worries-about-not-being-sloth. Very-Sloth.'

That made Christof fall silent, content to hand Barth a wrench or pliers for several moments before gingerly tapping his skinny shoulder.
'Master... I-was-requested-to.... To-do-this-thing-for-school. Thought-maybe... You-might-help?'

The subject change was not subtle.
Barth looked at him like he had just suggested moving to Christmas Town. Was Christof...making a joke? Or kindly offering him a chance not to volunteer for something? But those other things were...he had his reasons, but if Christof was asking...
He sighed.
"Oh alright, might as well. What is it?"

The hunchback settled back, looking a bit conflicted himself as he fidgeted with the adjustable wrench in his hands, finally setting it on his knees to sign, 'Shop-Class-has-been-closed. Professor-had-accident. Asked-me-to-student-teach. ME!' The gesture was flailed a bit, as though conveying the rise in volume, 'Don't-think-can-do-it-on-own. Can't-even-make-Doom-Buggy-run-proper.'

Be a figure of authority in a science setting? Over...well, anyone who showed up. Monsters, Undead, Reapers, Ghosts, Demons. First years, people of Christof's own year. It was exactly the sort of direction he needed. And together...

Christof nearly topped over in relief, catching himself with a hand before straightening with an eager look, 'Really? Must-prepare! Much-to-do! Had-some-ideas-" He signed eagerly but quickly caught himself, 'Finish-doom-buggy-first-of-course.'

"It's mostly done," Barth said. "Just needed a little fiddling. I hope. As long as the class doesn't involve paperwork." He leaned back.
"I know err, I know you can't vote. For the Student Council. Since you're running yourself. But you would have...? I mean, if you could...?"

The hunchback fell silent again, leaning forward to poke at a few pieces of machinery. 'Vote? Glad-I-am-not-voting.' It kept things simpler.

"Ah, err, yes..." Barth said. It was the diplomatic answer. He couldn't help but feel Riley might have received a different one. But he would like to think- at least hope that maybe Christof might have voted for him.
But...
"Even after that business with the explosives? Still?"

Christof sat on the grass, hanging his head between his knees as he gave a helpless shrug.

Barth's expression tightened, but he didn't have anything to add either. Christof wouldn't actually be voting, so it wasn't like he wasn't bartering for the one vote that would decide the election. ...It mattered any way. He knew his current position with Christof was...complicated. And by graduation, he thought he would have enough time to steer things to where he wanted them. Riley was helping more than hindering. Eventually...eventually.
He could be patient, normally.
But there was always the issue of Christof surviving until graduation. There, Riley wasn't helping. And if she used him again in some petty fit as something disposable...as it was now, Barth wasn't sure what he could do to intervene. Revenge, maybe. More eventualities. But he didn't like it. He didn't like any of it. Worse that Christof forgave her for it.
He concentrated on the car.
"Right," he said. "Let's try with a little extra power, this time."
