Shelley read the cult leader's rambling speech impatiently. He'd briefly been told the story about the First Child, but he didn't know it by heart and had trouble following what the cultist was talking about, but he understood the end all to clearly.

so they ARE responsible! Shelley thought. Now I HAVE to follow them.

Feeling more like an international super-spy than ever, he snuck closer, just in time to watch the pool fill back up.

Damn.

He started looking around the pool for some secret switch or other to open the secret entrance when he heard a whispered argument, and quickly slipped back amongst the shrubs, making his way towards the noise. He saw the couple on top of the wall, and just caught the end of their argument, but he barely heard what the woman had said, he was so struck by her beauty. Shelley hadn't been around very many book children, but he felt pretty sure she was more attractive than most of them. He tried to remember the romance novel he'd read earlier in the day as he loudly cleared his throat to get their attention.

"hrrmrmrm... Um... You're, uh... Hi." It wasn't from the romance book, but it was the best he could do with his stomach trying to crawl into his throat.

Ying felt gooseflesh race down the back of her neck and down her arms and legs, a shiver of fear and excitement both. She had expected the breakaway member to slink into some alleyway, speak a password and disappear into a safe basement, or perhaps to meet up with a few more similarly light-stepping contacts.

But to find the Person rejoining the bloodied fellow from earlier was wholly unexpected. Ying drank up the conversation with eagerness like her pages soaked the water from her paints - the intrigue! Part of her still nagged that this revolution was dangerous. People would certainly die, already had, apparently ... but just knowing that something secret was going was undeniably fascinating.

She had no particularly powerful memory, however her lettering and illumination work had been recognized by a few important City Folk in the past, and Ying had been asked to paint their portraits. The portrait work for City Folk, to her, included their script as well - it was as much a part of them, it seemed, as their faces and hands. And, though the portraiture was not her specialty, Ying still scrutinized the speech of the robed pair before her with a keen eye. To recognize either of them by their words in a crowd would be impossible, but the basics of their scripts--

Oh, she would only need to recall one of them. The conversation appeared to be leading up to the death of the one in bloodstained robes, but actually seeing the killing happen still came to Ying as an immense surprise. She knew of all kinds of death from her story - armies clashing together, good men and bad executed in various manners ... but actually seeing the deed done was not something Ying had yet experienced. She recoiled slightly, but could not tear her gaze away.

The surprise left the lady slightly numbed, and it would not strike her as strange or unsettling until later that the City Person who had done the deed had addressed her, in her hiding place, directly. Ying nodded ever so slightly as the woman in the robes spoke to her, but did not venture from the shadows until several minutes had passed after the woman's departure. She walked up to the items left behind and crouched, studying them carefully for a moment as all of it sank in.

The danger was tangibly real. But Ying could not shake her fascination. She had been given an invitation, too, it seemed, and she was not one to turn one down.

Carefully, she picked up the mask, brushing her fingers over its surface before tucking it away in her own robes. She started to reach for the knife but stopped, and instead took the robes and, using a clean corner of cloth, lifted the weapon by the handle. The robe she planned to burn right away. The knife and mask ... Ying had until the moon half-waned to decide what to do with those.

Response from Nios & Tiberius
Path: 3A

Nios wasn’t a particularity heavy book child, but it was uncomfortable to feel nothing but pressure on his shoulders. Nios would move and shift, occasionally his heel would sink into Tiberius’ neck. But was more uncomfortable was that Nios was seeing something that he couldn’t see. Nios was witnessing something that Tiberius would only be able to witness through retelling. It sent an unpleasant shiver up his spine. More than likely, Nios would miss some important detail...

Tiberius bent down and let Nios hop off his shoulders. They managed to slip inside the garden without being heard and were hiding inside some bushes. Lamps were set on the ground and the flickering lamplight made the shadows of the city people dance. It gave the whole affair a creepy feeling, Tiberius was reminded first of illicit rituals that showed up in many fantasy books, and then he thought of the room of the Holy. He remembered Therin and the smell of smoke and sage, thick and clawing. Nios was quiet, shivering besides him and he wondered what the small book child was remembering.

The Godsvoice knelt down and pulled a small medallion from his robs, he put it into the pond and started to speak. He talked about the First Child and sacrifices. All very interesting and vaguely odd, but this was the kind of stuff you found in fantasy books, not real life. Nios wiggled, his hand tugging on Tiberius’ sleeve.

“Tiberius, I really need to pee.”

“Shhh! It’s just getting to the good part.” He managed to hiss.

The Godsvoice continued to talk continued to talk about sacrifice. From his perch on the ground Tiberius had a hard time making out all the words. The wind rustled the leaves of the bushes, and the sound of footsteps and robes dragging on the ground drowned out his voice. Suddenly, Tiberius felt a sharp jab in his side.

“Look,” Nios said, “the pond! It’s empty!”

True to his word, the pond was empty. It was hard to tell what was going on when both their faces were pressed into the dirt, but the Godsvoice stepped into the empty pond and then the two book children watched as he slowly disappeared from sight. The rest of the cultists followed. As soon as they were all gone, Tiberius shot up and ran over to the pond.

It was full of water. He touched the bottom just to be sure. It was solid as stone. There was no indication of any staircase, let alone the cultists that had stood there just moments before. Tiberius looked over his shoulder to call Nios over. The child was wavering, silently hopping on one foot to another.

“Tiberius –” Nios whined, making a general waving motion with his hand that signaled he really could not hold it in any longer.

Tiberius sighed, and pointed at the bushes. “Just...go.”

When Nios had finished his business, he was thoroughly cross. He was out late at night, way past his preferred bed time, and he was hungry. And tired. And there was supposed to be cake! But they’d spent the entire night gallivanting around in the darkness chasing crazy people covered in blood and. And Tiberius owed him cake.

And Tiberius had to treat him three times.
And they had come across something vaguely interesting.
And neither one had a knife through their guts.

All in all, he supposed, it could have been worse.

Undoubtedly, Tiberius would get the grand idea that this was a /mystery/ that they were going to solve. He'd probably spend the next few days shuffling through his personal library (how the man kept so many books in his small house was a mystery) searching for answers and clues. Nios could deal with that. When Tiberius started on one of his moods, there was often a lot of coffee and snacks involved. Nios liked the rich smell of coffee much much more than the musty smell of old books and sunlight. Musk reminded him of plague. Plague was bad. He found his mind wondering what snacks Tiberius would have this time. Strawberry cake from Lily's Bakery? Biscoff from Old Nan's? Pound Cake from Renee's Cafe? Maybe even pie from Marian's cart? But for now, all Nios wanted cake and a warm bed.

“Cake.” Nios commanded. “Now.”

Vlad cast a look downwards and nodded sharply, completely missing the gaze and intentions of the new Book Child - he leapt from the wall and landed lithely, casually dusting his dark clothes off. "Yes," he said obliviously and curtly, "we were following the man with the orb as well." Behind him, Estra followed rather more carefully by climbing down the very convenient branches of the ancient tree. "I presume you saw the entire exchange." He placed his hands behind his back, and addressed the fellow matter-of-factly. "Seems like there's some cult activity going on, but it's not immediately clear what they're anticipating, what they intend to do...and what that cage means." Clearly the crow was not enthused by his next thought, but he was a practical one, and his mystery was still not solved. "It looks like something none of us can do alone."

"If you'd like," he paced as he continued, "come to Eyncastor's clock tower tomorrow evening -"
"I can cook dinner," Estra piped up helpfully.
"She can cook dinner." he thoughtlessly repeated, most certainly distracted. "And..."
Vlad trailed off at the sight of two figures - he soon concluded, two idiots - meandering and milling about the pond and - a stare of disbelief - did one of them just piss into the bushes? Unbelievable. Just how many damn people were in this bloody 'secret' garden?

He loudly (and not very smartly) called, voice ringing through the garden: "ALRIGHT ARE THERE ANY MORE OF YOU AROUND RIGHT NOW? YOU CAN COME TO THE EYNCASTOR CLOCK TOWER TOMORROW EVENING FOR DINNER, IF YOU'D LIKE TO DISCUSS THIS. GOODNIGHT."

The pursuit didn't continue for long, as the group seemed to sit not too far off from where she was.

Afraid of being caught following them, Bella quickly hid behind a bush, making an eye hole through the leaves with her hands so that she could spy on them quietly.

As she sat and watched, her eyes widened with every piece of information revealed. The golden one? Miracles? She had heard of tales of the First Bookchild, but it had been so long ago, and only remembered bits and parts. All of this was thoroughly fascinating, and she began to watch them closely, ever more curious about the golden cage.

Eyes blinked as the medallion was taken out, and even more so as she watched the bubbling in the pond. What made it act that way?

While her gaze was still transfixed upon the bubbles, she barely noticed the words of text swirl and tumble, until it seemed to become more dense, sinister. Only then, did she pay heed, and start to tremble in fear as she read the frightening words. S-sacrifice?

She could only stare in silence as the group rose, and began to descend down the now-empty pool, that seemed to reveal hidden staircases. If she wasn't stricken with fear, she would of followed them, but now... she could only sit there, wondering, worrying. What was going to happen now? Were they going to hunt down those unfaithful? W-what if they came for her?!

Panic seized her, and she could only tremble, legs frozen, fearful that they would somehow come after her, oblivious to the fact that Book Children can't be killed.

It was only then when a loud voice broke her out of the trance, and she looked about worriedly, wondering who it was that called out. Friend or foe? B-but... they offered food. That couldn't... be all that bad, could it? It was decided. She would go to the clock tower tomorrow night. Maybe they would hold the answers to tonight's mysteries...
