((Two 20s in a row? If that new system in vote was passed, I'd be done xD))
Nero grinned, he was getting the hang of it now. It was almost as if it was coming easy to him. He smiled and continued to work on his hand signs, focusing intently.
He molded his fingers to match the pictures on the pages. He was glad to have finished the Boar and the Ram with little trouble. So far, the rabbit and the horse had given him the hardest time, so he decided to practice them a few more times each, to get them down, while they were fresh in his head.
Perfect. Not a single problem, the chakra flowed each time, without any problems.
He continued on, working mainly on the Dog seal, moving his hands and fingers to match the page, not wanting to ask for any more help than he needed.

Nero was glad to have successfully finished the Dog. It was difficult for him, trying a few times before finally getting it. He practiced it a few more times just for good measure.
Perfect. Easy as anything. He thought to himself, happy to be making progress. There were only 2 more that needed completion, and he was confident about the two of them being as easy as the others.

The next seal in the order of the listing was Saru, the Monkey. Inori's brows furrowed together as he studied the large-scale portrait. His eyes narrowed. What was this? It was really, really hard to make out clearly where the fingers would go with the seal so, well, flat. Something told him however that the seal was by far simpler than it looked... But he shook the thought aside, instead taking to peering closer at the seal and attempting to figure out where the contours ended. In a way, it was probably lucky these were photographs of probably a Fubuki's hands performing the seals. The pale skin that seemed a degree more snow-white than the usual made it easier in a way to trace the fingers by the dimming secondary highlights that touched upon the softened edges.
That was when it struck him, based on how shadows would fall, that in the image was then the palm of the other hand. The two hands, one is simply inverted under the other! He wondered however how the back of the seal would look like, as he couldn't even spot the peeping edge of a thumb. Probably then the fingers weren't just folded but tucked in, out of sight effectively with this portrait being from the frontal side. A thoughtful look crossed Inori's eyes, as he experimented with his fingers.
A Matter of Pride On a quest to conquer the Academy! Inori is adamant to learn the handseals on his own, but is such a thought really wise? Or possible, even?

Nero was finally almost done. He had only one more left to do. The monkey. It looked like it would be difficult.
He looked across the table, curious as to how far into his exercise Inori was. He was a bit behind, having only 8 of his 12 seals done, where as Nero had 11 done, and was about to be working on his 12th.
"Inori you slowpoke....I'm already on my last one." Nero bragged, glad to not have to be on the receiving end of the smack talk. He was glad to be able to give it out though, as when it came to talking trash, giving was always better than receiving.
Almost there...just have to beat this monkey seal, and you're golden. Let's do it now, first try. He thought to himself. He was confident he could do it, so he tried, failing miserably, and again, also failing. It was harder than it looked.
He looked up at Inori to see he was also having trouble. Nero had been skipping around, doing the easiest seals first, saving the harder ones for last. Inori however, was just going in order, which is why they both landed upon the monkey at the same time.
He took his head out of the book in time to see Hatsuyuki doing something with her hands. She was curling her thumb around the back of her palm, to show Nero how to do it. He smiled, to show thanks, and continued, beginning to work at it again.

"Yes!" Nero said. He said it with excitement, but it was a whisper so only they could hear it. He made the monkey seal a few more times to make sure he had it down perfectly, then ran through the entire list twice.
Bird. He thought as he made the seal, connecting his two forefingers, bending his thumbs. Rat He thought to himself, putting one hand on top of the other, completing the seal. He did this with each of them, executing the seals perfectly, after saying the name of them.
When he was finished he simply ran through the second time, doing the exact same thing, just for good measure, as he wanted to make sure he didn't forget.
All that was left to do, was to make use of them by performing some jutsu later that night. He was excited, he had always had a fascination with jutsu, now he could actually do them. He was going to be one of the kids who he had envied so much, who were able to perform jutsus after learning the handseals from the academy teacher, however, Nero was a bit different.
Both he and Inori had not learned from a real teacher. Nero had had very little help learning the seals, therefore, they were all more or less self taught, which gave him a feeling of great accomplishment. He yawned and slammed the book shut, laying it on the table, and resting his head on it.
He was finally done, the day was almost over, he could almost continue with his favorite activity, and as of now, the one he was best at: Sleeping.
He took his head up from the book, and stood up. HE grabbed the book off of the table and returned it to its section of the shelf, an activity he had grown quite good at, as it was not the first time today he had spent time putting away books.
He went to one of the nice, comfortable chairs, located by the fire, and sat down, staring out the window, watching the snow fall. The pattern of the snow caused Nero to get bored, and his eyes began to slowly close, before finally shutting, as he drifted off to sleep by the fireplace.
He wasn't worried though, he was a rather light sleeper, and even if he didn't wake up, he figured Inori would get him, because as far as Nero figured, they were friends now, and that's what friends did, they helped eachother out. Especially when one of them had the risk of waking up, being disoriented because he didn't know where he was, in the middle of the library.
Whatever, at least they were in the Fubuki compound, so even if Inori didn't help, Nero wouldn't have any trouble getting out.

The young Fubuki walked back to his home, the climate getting colder and colder. Even for the lack of fat or meat on his bones, the cold was nothing to him. He walked through the snow, that was just reaching past the bottom of his kimono, with nothing but his kimono and geta. He had traveled this same path many times before, it was almost impossible for him to get lost. He remembered one time when he had and was found screaming and running around. He thought it was a wolf, but it only turned out to be a rabbit.
Smiling to himself he continued trudging through the snow. He could see the compound in the distance, well most of it anyways... The blizzard that surrounded and filled it. He wondered what his mother was doing right now. He prayed it was making something to eat. He began smacking his lips at the thought of food.
As unhealthy as it was, he picked up a bunch of snow in his hand and began eating it. Do you eat snow? Or do you drink it? By the time it gets into your mouth it is pretty much water... But you can still bite and chew the snow... I wonder if anyone has ever thought about it. He heard some birds chirping, which seemed rather odd with how cold it was. Most birds would fly south for the winter, but he assumed some had grown custom to the freezing temperatures.
He came to the white castle gates and walked through the courtyard to get to the Southwestern wing where the main family's quarters were. He opened the doors and ran to where his mother would usually be, but didn't find her there, "Well perhaps I should get to the Dining Hall then!" He spun on the balls of his feet and walked down the tower, heading to the Great Hall to get to the dining hall...

He ignored the soft chuckle of the princess, who was clearly amused at Inori's only increasing stubborness at Nero's taunt. She however made no further move to aid an unwilling soul, probably not desiring to be on the recipient end of some snide comment. Not that he would say something insulting to another in their own house. However, out of the corner of his eye Inori saw as clear as ever the girl discreetly aiding Nero, and a curving frown was the only thing that indicated his notice before he returned to sulkily gazing down on the page. He wasn't in any way unhappy with this lesson, he certainly had made more progress than he expected in such a short time, and Hatsuyuki's explanations helped reinforce the information in the book.
Anyhow, too much thinking won't get him any closer to finishing this lesson, so with concentration he merely continued with the lesson. He had pretty much figured out the fingering for the Saru seal by now. The readings on the page helped him as well: it spoke of how the Saru seal was important in summoning beasts from other realms. In a way, that really made sense, the palm was inverted because it was like another world colliding with their own, right? That would help, probably a lot, in properly committing the Saru seal to memory.

The next seal in order was Tori, the bird. Inori immediately thought of wind manipulation, smiling to himself a little as he was proven right. However, the book had more information to add on the Tori seal itself: the seal of the Bird helped increase the sharpness of the chakra manifested, thereby also making it ideal for shaping a variety of other affinities apart from those of the wind - or "Futon" element as the book calls such techniques. He paged the book a little for more information on "sharpening chakra", particularly suddenly curious as to how energies of the body could be made into weapons of various types. To him the thought was still rather fascinating a prospect. He did hear of "chakra" before from the monks of the west, but really, for chakra to be the source of what can perform such amazing feats?
It would probably be very unwise to altogether disregard the important factor of chakra. As he leafed through the pages of the book, no longer just looking at the handseals, Inori's mind wondered. Perhaps, just perhaps... What would it be like then to infuse a real weapon, something like a solid sword, with chakra? When he skimmed through the chapter of the book on chakra, it did mention chakra once leaving the body was in danger of dissipating into the atmosphere.

He knew he should stop getting sidetracked, but Inori couldn't help but begin reading the whole introduction to chakra. It was fascinating, compiled with his earlier crash introduction to tenketsu, he begun having the picture of the body's chakra system being something like a circulatory system. So then, chakra is like blood? The book did mention that if a shinobi drains their chakra levels too low, they'll be in critical condition or if in the worst possible situation, such damage may be even fatal. However, it appears when shinobi are capable of expelling chakra is highly limited. One method is from the feet, the book states, such as in chakra walk on vertical surfaces and water. The other part, then, would be the hands.
This is probably the purpose of the seals. Thought Inori to himself. Both the princess and the Fubuki child from earlier spoke of chakra flow similarly, didn't they? The handseals shape the way that chakra flows out of the body. And in such a manner, depending on the shape, can make the chakra into a sharper molded density and such. His interests stoked, Inori flipped the page, and continued reading on. Who knows what more useful information he would learn, which would probably be invaluable for further reading topics at a future time?

Then, is there possibly a way to escape the necessity of using seals? Mused Inori to himself, as he slowly flipped through the pages on the chakra chapter. It would seem that while necessary as a fundamental, handseals were really only "crutches". Didn't Hatsuyuki even mention the Fubuki clan used variant forms of Ryu, the Seal of the Dragon? In that case, it was the general shape of a seal that mattered, not really the specifics. The small child from earlier who gave the tip on how to do the back to "Tora" probably then only gave the method the clan elders taught her for easier understanding's sake. What if his earlier assumption on Jutsu then wasn't quite, well... True? Perhaps, perhaps just imagine that these seals were not necessary, and those same techniques can be performed just as they were.
That would then make Ninjutsu masters one of the most powerful on the field. Yet, judging from how many shinobi in Kiri walked around with weapons, it seemed that this village at least valued close combat a lot. Something wasn't adding up to the logic, something that just didn't fit... If melee-ranged techniques were so valued, then it didn't make sense why Kiri would hail the Fubuki family particularly for their mastery over Ninjutsu.

Feeling his head ache a little from following the long and complex train of thoughts, Inori shook his head. He hadn't noticed that in the interim Hatsuyuki had slipped away, and Nero had fallen asleep. The soft snores of the other boy didn't bother him, as Inori was too deeply engrossed in the book to take notice. There was the distant sounds of trailing water, but he didn't think too much of it. Eventually, as he felt cool fingers press a warmed cup to his hands, he looked up. Hatsuyuki had returned, and she had brought tea for her guest. He smiled a little, and gratefully accepted the offer, after all the earlier lingering taste of the ramen had even gone somewhat bitter on his tongue.
Her reappearance reminded him to concentrate once more, as more grudgingly Inori flipped back to the index of handseals. His eyes looked at the composite list first, trailing slowly over each minimized image, before he flipped through the larger-scaled portraits. Tori, that was the seal he left himself on to read more on how chakra control was theorized to be effected by handseals.

Somewhere along the line, Hatsuyuki begun small talk again.
"You don't know much about shinobi basics, don't you?"
He looked at her at those words, a slight frown touching upon his pretty features. What did she mean? Did it have to do with her earlier observation that he attended to these lessons "like a child"? However, the princess merely smiled a little at this seemingly antagonistic response before she in turn lightly shook her own head.
"I do not mean to insult you. You see, I am a Chuunin of this village..."
Inori's brows furrowed.
"Chuunin?"
She seemed surprised that he did not know the word, but the shock was only momentary in her eyes before it settled.
"You are a Student of Kiri's Shinobi Academy. It's not an official rank, but if we are going by the shinobi order of "professionality", then the initialization rank Academy Students attain is "Genin". Afterwards, they attend an exam to be selected from other Genin candidates to the next rank, Chuunin."

So it was like a shinobi pecking order of a type.
"Is that the highest rank?"
She seemed to regard his question even more oddly.
"No..." She replied. "The next rank are the "Jounin". Jounin take various duties in the village, such as commanding a squadron of Genin - usually three - because they specialize in various fields, Jounin take the more difficult missions. They have a sub-division, the "Special Jounin", whom are masters of only a particular field. Above the Jounin rank then, would be the title given to the leader of the village - a "Kage"."
She paused a little.
"Though Kiri haven't had a Mizukage in two years..."
"What's so special about a Kage?"
This time, Inori could almost laugh that the princess absolutely could not contain her surprise.

"A Kage..." Began Hatsuyuki, with a measure of difficulty.
"...he doesn't even know what that means?" Came the scornful voice of an older Fubuki.
"Kira-kun!" Hatsuyuki's voice was reproachful. "He is a guest in the house." Her blue eyes narrowed. "You would do to rid that tone."
Inori watched as the new Fubuki, a young man of perhaps around his own age shrugged. However, his own emerald gaze did not at all waver under the intensity of the other's stormy blue-green one. He wanted to retort with an insult, but surprisingly when the young man called Kira spoke again, his tone was civil.
"...the Kage is the strongest shinobi in this village, kid. Kiri - the land of water - calls the Kage "Mizu"-kage."
"Ah, yes..." Affirmed Hatsuyuki more sweetly. "The land of Wind has their Kazekage, the land of Fire their Hokage, the land of Rain their Amekage, the Takikage rules the Waterfall, and the Tsuchikage is supreme in the land of Earth."
"So each nation has a shinobi village."
Hatsuyuki paled considerably.
"Tsukimiya-kun..." She said softly. "Yes...each shinobi village is associated with a country... The greatest villages belong to the mighty elemental nations. Fire, water, earth, wind..."
A strange understanding dawned over him.
"Like the elements... But what happened to the Lightning nation?"
She looked uncomfortable now.
"Destroyed, Tsukimiya-kun..."
Fortunately, Kira seemed to save her unwilling question.
"Kid..." He begun. "Just what do you know about shinobi?"
"Beyond what hime told me? Not very much."

Kira shook his head.
"Hatsuyuki... Go to bed. It's late, and you are going to ruin your health. Leave the kid to me."
She protested.
"I know you are a Jounin, Kira!" Perhaps it was surprising for Inori, as the quiet princess never even once raised her voice until now. "However..."
"Suki..." Pressed the older boy. "It's fine, just go get some rest. I'll see that he gets through the lessons." There was a long moment of silence, and then a scowl promptly curved his mouth.
"I just can't believe the Old Bats are letting civilians in the Academy nowadays."
She fidgeted.
"They must have good-..."
"They always do." He interrupted. "This is a whole new level of low though, to make cannon fodder out of civilians."
While the two were arguing, Inori had resumed to examining the Tori seal in the book. From the first look of the large portrait pages, he wasn't quite able to make out the fingers in the back. All in all, it was an interesting if albeit strange seal. Like the Ox, it resembled the animal of it's name, however Inori couldn't help but feel that with the space formed by the fingers it was supposed to help project chakra in some manner or so. That was when Kira interrupted.
"Kid, there's many acceptable variants of Tori."
At this startling revelation, Inori looked up at the Jounin.
