Hope I didn't post here already, potentially contradicting myself.
Chidori has splash damage. Rasengan has pretty much penetration damage.
Overall, Chidori does less damage, but is more likely to hit, but not likely to do as much damage unless it hits right on. Rasengan does much more damage, is harder to hit with, and is extremely easy to cancel.
It really depends on the expirience and chakra of the user.
Naruto VS Sasuke? About even.
Kakashi VS Jiraiya? A tough call.

Offhand? I don't know. It was when Jiraiya took Naruto to find Tsunade....or somewhere around there...My manga collection is back home...all 289 chapters of it...

Yeah, I'm quoting myself... Anyway, it is chapter 167, page 9. At first, it looks like Tsunade is talking about Naruto, but there is no scene that says anything about Jiraiya's demotion at the current time.

Well, when they were fighting, they both sent each other flying back and then Naruto...Well, I think you all know...*looks away* It was a....really sad episode for Team 7...

Rasengan, because you need the sharingan to properly use chidori.

by far the rasengan. that was clear in the episode where naruto and sasuke were fighting on top of the building and sasuke hit the water tower with the chidori and naruto hit the other one with the rasengan...sasuke's cracked and leaked where naruto's exploded out the back...heh

But if the choices were Rasengan or Raikiri... I think I'd pick Raikiri

drxevildoer by far the rasengan. that was clear in the episode where naruto and sasuke were fighting on top of the building and sasuke hit the water tower with the chidori and naruto hit the other one with the rasengan...sasuke's cracked and leaked where naruto's exploded out the back...heh That's because of the different nature of the attacks. chidori is a stabbing attack while rasengan is more of a grinding attack. while the rasengan is more powerful the chidori is far more deadly.

I learned today that the Chidori is Kakashi's signature move, but never heard of the Rasengan...
