Esiris lgtenos Me: I don't give a s**t. There are far more important things to worry about than someone's ignorance. Like what? I can't answer for him, but for me personally... -I worry about my job performance -I worry about getting all the bills paid on time -I'm responsible for the welfare of a teenager who can be a bit of a wild-child, -I worry about my health, mental and otherwise, particularly since this time last year, I was in the hospital for several months -I am presently worrying about a friend who is in financial ruin -My boyfriend moved in with me recently, adding a fourth person to the household, and I'm worried about ******** things up. Those are just the first things that come to mind. So, to be honest, people saying "that's so gay" is pretty low on my list of concerns. I don't expect everyone to have the same priorities as me, of course. Someone else's reason for being offended by the phrase is just as valid as my reason for not being offended. I can certainly understand why other people get upset about "that's so gay" and I can understand why some people are offended by it, even if I don't feel the same way. Likewise, I'm sure you can understand why for some of us it isn't a big deal, at least not in the grand scheme of things.

I guess I just see it as being a part of the "grand scheme of things" that most stuff on your list can be effected by how society views the LGBT community , and some of that is shaped by Neurolinguistics.

I don't think people should add any negative definition to a word.. Gay originally meant happy and now it means homosexual. I don't care because it's not bad. But now that it means stupid, that's not good...
If black (as in African-American) started meaning awesome, black people wouldn't care, and would probably like it, because that makes them feel like they're awesome. (Ex. Wow that skateboard trick was so Chuck Norris! Chuck Norris: cool ; Wow... Sarah Palin is so Chuck Norris... Chuck Norris: gonk So people think I'm an idiot?!) I bet if suddenly people started referring to really stupid/juvenile/unintelligent things as BLACK, black people will have a fit because they would think, "Why do they have to use the word BLACK? Why not some other word that actually is a synonym for stupid? What are they trying to say about Black people?! scream "
I hope I was able to clarify my point well enough. I'm not good at explaining things. gonk

Esiris I guess I just see it as being a part of the "grand scheme of things" that most stuff on your list can be effected by how society views the LGBT community , and some of that is shaped by Neurolinguistics. If I lived in a different place, or was in a different situation, worrying about the effect of "that's so gay" might be more of an issue. As it is, the society in which I live has a generally neutral or positive view of the queer community. "That's so gay" is used frequently by teens here (although it isn't common with adults), but despite what you've mentioned about neurolinguistics, high-schoolers here are very positive and accepting of gay, bi, and lesbian students. The change in the last 10 years alone has been impressive and encouraging, and can probably be attributed to several things: -Awareness of GBLT issues is part of the curriculum for the younger students. -Members of the gay community are brought in to talk with the older students about homophobia (my older roommate volunteered this year) -Same-sex marriage has been legal here for longer than most of these kids have been in high school. -Pretty much every school has a GSA, and it's not uncommon for same-sex couples to go to prom together. -It isn't "cool" to be homophobic. (The "Fck H8" campaign comes to mind.) I don't disagree that using "gay" to mean "bad/stupid" has to be negative and harmful at some level. I'm just saying that maybe the effect might not be particularly significant, depending on where you live. In learning to manage my own anxiety issues, I've found that I can't function if I let myself worry about every single thing, particularly things I can't change. When it comes to the use of "that's so gay", I won't use the phrase myself, but I also won't allow myself to get worked up about it.

I really dislike it when people use that word. I felt really bad when I heard it constantly around me at school. It was so bad in one of my classes I requested to move to the other side of the room so I didn't have to hear these idiots' constant use of the word.
What I thought was really cool was when I was in Seattle on vacation I saw a PSA commercial about trying to stop the use of the word 'gay' in that context, I thought it was super cool that someone finally decided to do that. And the sponsor of the GSA in my school had a poster up in her room about stopping the use of the word, and would have a student go up and read it if they said "that's so gay", so I have hope that this word will slowly leave ^^

The word itself doesn't bother me, it almost always depends on the person saying it. If I know them and their opinion of gay people, and they use the word, my opinion of them might stoop even farther down, or it might not change at all. "that's gay" it's not black or white for me, it may not bother me at all.
f*****t used to, the word itself doesn't bother me but it will almost always change my perception of someone.

You know, i used to not care. I thought it was just a normal term. I used to call EVERYTHING gay. Id call my friends gay for hugging, crying, just anything. I was kinda a spiteful kid...but id like to think i grew out of that into a respectable person. Because now i sort of take offense to it. When somebody around me says "Thats so gay" or "Dude thats gay !" i just...cringe a little and my heart pinches thinking how that hurts somebody. and how i never know who's in the closet and ...two of my friends are openly bi and i used to say that around them and they'd just TOLERATE it without even so much as scolding me...it really makes me realize how much they mean to me.. and how foolish i was. stare

it bothers the hell out of me....My sister everytime she visits she freaking says it in almost every sentence....-__- I find it insulting and find that it makes no sense. Because people say it about objects, about people even to the obvious straight people they say it towards...it makes no sense...I tend to say "That's so Straight..." to counter attack towards it...or if I hear someone saying it I sometimes say "Well I better make sure I flirt with him now won't I?" lol..It has bugged me for years..and always will. evil

I personally don't like it :/
I mean, it's not a word that should be used in a negative way. My brother uses it constanlty along with 'queer' when he's playing video games with his friends. It bothers me, and I can't help it.
Also, one of my old friends said it in a negative context constanly. Even though she loves gay men. (...quite obsessivly). And claims to be a friend to the gay community. Actually, her entire family uses 'gay' negativly. I think she just wanted to fit in with the 'popular' crowd at our school.
Anyways, I can't really understand why you would use it in such a way if you are part of, claim to be, or are a friend of the LGBT community.
But yeah, those are my thoughts. :3

im kinda bothered by it confused im mean its just kinda annoying. besides can't people find a better word that apparently means stupid rather than indirectly (or possibly directly if the person is a homophobe) insulting the LGBT community? unfortunately many people use it without actually wanting to offend people or intentionally offending people. in a way it almost has 2 or 3 definitions now.
i still find it bad to use it in a negative way though.
