Xagarath Ankor Ironically, crashing when you defrag is a sure sign the computer needs defragging, I believe... Not that that's a lot of help. But yeah... reformatting'd probably solve the whole malarkey. Anyways, welcome back smile Thanks. smile Strangely enough, I managed to run a defrag on the C drive on the third attempt, and it's now listed as having no fragments, even though it's still crashing. The D drive and the system clean-up still produce the same result, though.

In that case, the D drive is probably where the problems lie. However, if I misunderstood there, another possibility suggests itself... Have you tried a really thorough spyware scan?

Erm, just a note.
A hard drive that gives errors during a defragmentation indicates there is something wrong with the hard drive, not that it needs a fragment.
What I suggest is the following.
Perform a full scan disk on each of your hard drives. (From My Computer, right click on your hard drive and choose properties. From there, choose the tools tab and then the error checking button. Check both of the options and then reboot your machine as requested) Following the reboot and finish of the scan you can then run a virus scan and anti spyware scan. Then try the scan disk.
I have a spare hard drive which I am MORE than willing to send down to you. Its brand new and hasnt been used.
An external hard drive is essentially the same as an internal hard drive, its just more mobile. If you're wanting to backup data and reformat a hard drive, it would be far cheaper to use CD or DVD-Rs.
Please email me, I want to help.

My PC's given up the ghost again, with almost the exact same problem.
With the exception of public PCs, to paraphrase Captain Oates: I'm just going offline (again!) - I may be some time... sad

No matter how many library computers (the one I'm in right now has many, many machines), they always seem to fill up.

For some strange reason, it npow takes roughly five pushes on the start button before this beastie boots up - but that's a minor niggle by comparison.
