Calder sat on the arm of the chair he once been lounging in and turned his head a bit, a clear sign of confusion but trying to see if turning his ears a bit would help him hear better, as if that would increase his understanding. "I don't see what's so taboo about touching. It's the only way most of my kind talks. Nipping, nuzzling, brushing against each other, nibblin, sharin food, and just horsin around. Sleeping in a nice pile and setting your head on someone. It's comforting. I'd go crazy if I couldn't go over to someone and touch them after a while. I'd feel.........." What was the word? ".......at a distance."
"Well, you said you are the rebellious sort. Are you keeping to all those old taboos? Do you still keep some of that culture or are you going against all of it?" He wasn't sure, not having talked to many rebels before.

Malodore shrugged, the movement making its backblades chime against each other. "I don't mind if others do it - we are just rather uncomfortable with it. Comes from our nature, I suppose. The doctors, the aloof ones who can't get too close, si? Though, ah... I do permit Riley more liberties than most. But casual touching is simply not something I take any pleasure in for myself."
It looked thoughtful at the next question. "It is not a matter of keeping to it in that case, really - just a personal preference. Same as wanting to be covered up thoroughly." It indicated its clothing. "Other than that, though... no. What they did was set boundaries around what I could think about and what I could practice. That, I have broken thoroughly just by being here. By even having friends outside of the Casa."

Calder smiled. "That's good. I don't think everyone should forget about their clans, even if some like what you say aren't really good for you. At least you have a lot more freedom now, right? Don't think my kind likes the idea of me being here either, though I do like meeting everyone. I don't think half of the people in my herd has even met any of the creatures I meet on a normal basis. It's nice learning all about everyone. Like you and your Casssa." He swung his legs a little as he sat, looking down at them as he thought. "Guess it won't matter much to them though. Not like knowing what motivates a Igor and how deep sloth demons can sleep with matter to them in the long run." It wasn't like he could make baskets or go fishing by knowing that information.

"When I left the Casa, I decided to do what mattered to me," Malodore replied, opening its beak just a bit in a small smile. "There are others who left... I suppose I would consider those plague doctors to be my 'clan' now. Even if I don't fit in there, either. But I respect them a great deal."
It sounded a bit wistful.

What mattered to him. He wondered what that was in the grand picture. "So, what are you going to do now? After school? You don't have a clan to go back to. Aren't you...scared?" While Calder's parents lived on the outskirts of his own clan, they at least had each other. He always feared what it would be like to be truly alone, without a clan at all.

Malodore shook its head. "I'll have to make my own way in the world, I suppose. I'm not afraid, not really... there will always be a welcome for healers and caretakers. And I am told human medical facilities are excellent places to haunt." It smiled again, but this time there was somehow a creepy edge to it.
"All I wish is to tend to others, be permitted my scientific inquiries, and terrify a few humans into voiding themselves." Simple needs, really.

Calder laughed at the last bit, and smiled. "Yeah. I hope I can cause a few humans to flip their lid when I give them a crazy ride and dunk them into the water. I heard it's the best feeling in the world. I've love to try it myself, even if it's a bit scary to have them on your back." There was a large risk in having a human on a kelpie's back, but the pay for that risk was great. He would like to show everyone he knew how much Fear he could collect by just one midnight run. "I wanna make em scream."
But his smile wavered, and he picked a loose strand of hair from his kilt. "I still don't know what I want to grow up to be." Murchadh had addressed this and asked, and said he should look into his school studies to narrow his interest and focus towards a career that would be beneficial to the clan. He still didn't know what though.

"I don't suppose you need to decide just yet. We still have two more years of schooling left, and then whatever else you may choose to do afterwards. How long do kelpies live, generally? Most monsters have very long lifespans. Surely some choose and then change their minds later, I would imagine?"
A strange thought, though, being able to choose from such a young age. To have been raised with the knowledge of such a choice, rather than having to steal it away.

Actually, he was supposed to send word back to Murchadh what he wanted to be working towards. "I've...been told that if I don't decide this year, then there really isn't any reason for me to go to school." He thought about it for a moment. He had only bee going to a school for a year, and now that he had it, not going back felt like he was loosing everything. He loved being here. He loved meeting new and different types of people. But...
His eyes drifted to his kilt. He was finally part of the clan now.
"If I want to contribute like I should, I have to learn something that will be beneficial to all members of my clan." If he didn't, then Murchadh would pull him out of school and teach him a trade that didn't require him to be away.

"Ah, I see. That does make things more difficult, perhaps... my kind, we tend to be born into our vocations by nature. Though that doesn't mean some few don't break that mold and follow their own paths, of course... but for those, their true callings are like flames that burn strong inside of them. They have to be strong, in order to break through all the barriers they face..." Malodore's voice trailed off as it thought of the plague doctors in the heart of the swamp, and all they'd done for the sake of their freedom to choose.

Calder turned his head slightly when regarding Malodore. For a mask, it still showed a bit of emotion, and call it animal instinct or what-have-you, but he seemed rather sad. "Then you must be very strong and passionate." He pointed out, before slipping off the chair to stand. "I don't think I have enough of it....about much of anything." He scratched the back of his neck as he thought about. Funny to think that a boil who tended to be wild and crazy with his moods, to have such enthusiasm for some things, wouldn't have the passion for a career. "You probably think I am the pits for not being able to choose. Ya probably had it tougher, and to leave your clan. I'm sorry." He was sorry he was being so indecisive when Malodore had told him before how he wanted to be a doctor and rebelled against his clan to do so.

Malodore tilted its head to one side. "It is not a contest of who has done more, I do not think. I think you are a fine creature, or else I would not have offered you my emblem." It opened its beak in a smile, as if it had just neatly dispatched all concern in a single, irrefutable stroke. Logic!

Calder only could give a a noise as response, more of a drawn out a-hum in agreement. His brow was creased in thought as he looked at one of the cushions on Malodore's chairs before looking back up at the Plague Doctor. "Thanks for the talk. I need to go ..think about some things. Guess I can't force anything here. Not relationships or future plans." He just wished life would sort itself out.
"I should head out. Took enough of your time." He said, feeling somewhat bad to just spring up like this and talk about less fun matters. That was no way to make friends. It was why he never bothered others with it. It was strange to have these conversations and he certainly wasn't about to make it a habit. At least he kept it under control. He'd have to be especially perky and happy when he saw Malodore again to show he wasn't troubled.
"You have a good day, kay Malodore?" He said, moving towards the door. "We should really hang out more. Ya know, just to have fun." He said, and not for when he was coming to him for advice.

Malodore inclined its head towards Calder, opening its beak in a smile. "It is quite all right. I would like... hmm.... like to have fun, I think. Or to see what it is that you consider to be fun. It would be a most interesting experiment."

Calder laughed at Malodore's phrasing. "Whatever you say. If I can get Christof to lighten up, I'm sure I can give you a bit of fun too. I think you all work yourself too hard anyways. Remember, Malodore. You're join. You should enjoy things outside of studying." And with that, he went to the door and waved goodbye. "Till then, Laters." And Calder was gone, off to think about what sort of fun he could have with the plague doctor.
