I wish Rent and Tick Tick Boom had overtures, but Jon was too anti-traditional for that : P

I don't really have one favorite...
Gypsy: Yes, it's a little long, but once the music from "Rose's Turn" starts, you forget about that entirely. The Light in the Piazza: Come on. Titanic: If a ship made its own music, you can bet that's what it'd sound like. Sweeney Todd: The creepy organ music, playing kinda low key, and then BOOM factory whistle. Awesome.

Some overtures are great and some don't do anything for me.
Some that I love are from:
SPAMalot Jekyll & Hyde Into The Woods and Mamma Mia!

ITW doesn't have an overture...it just launches directly into the opening number ("Once Upon a Time").

The Boy From Oz ('The Lives of Me' intro). When I was sitting in the theatre and the timpini roll started, I flew 5 feet in the air. The lights were up on a sole piano onstage, and about 10 seconds into the overture the lights go out... but not enough that you couldn't see the movement of a body run on from stage right and sit at the bench. A minute later.. the brilliance of Hugh Jackman.
Dirty Rotten gets an honourable mention, tho. 3nodding

MysteronKitty ITW doesn't have an overture...it just launches directly into the opening number ("Once Upon a Time"). I was just in this show... the opening number is an overture and it is not called once upon a time... It's called "Overture/I wish"

I think phantom is one. the first time i heard it was at the movies (i dont live near NYC so i dont get to go to a lot of shows) and i jumped. it was sooo amazing. and then the lion king is another. the circle of life i mean. i saw it when the touring company came through Rochester NY and i was so overwhelmed i was crying, seriously. also wicked is one. I also think the Wizard of oz is (for me because i was in it) and Beauty and the beast is very powerful.

The Overture to Phantom of the Opera and Wicked were beautifully done.
