"Hmm, well, that could be true too. Spirits take on all kinds of forms; I guess if one had a mind to, it could take the form of a strange, many-toothed pink thing." Jayke wasn't sure of the exact why of such a shape, but who was he to try and puzzle out what the spirits thought? All he could ever hope to do was follow their teachings and examples the best he possibly could. That, he had been taught, was the only way to happily live. Of course, Mother Earth took precedence, her and her flock of teachers, the animals. They always had something more new and interesting than any of the humans at the school could ever teach. He had at times wondered whether or not his teachers would be more knowledgeable if they were animals, and with an animal's knowledge and wisdom. He had even put such thoughts on paper, but his social studies teacher, after snatching up his in-depth sketch of her with the head, tail and paws of a wise and noble wolf, had mistaken his intention entirely and sent him to the principal, accusing him of drawing 'dog-faced' pictures of her.

He smiled at Crysta and nodded. "I'd like it if you did; I really don't want to get eaten, especially not by a little pink thing." He laughed a little as he carefully lifted his hand to place her among his curly, riotous locks. "Want to go somewhere or do something? You can ride around on my head if you want, and I'll try not to jolt around too much."

Then it was settled! Flutterby felt filled with this happy glow now. She really was happy to have shared this with Jayke. Of all the people she knew, she was positive he needed this sort of friendship the most. Her head tilted to one side when Jayke would laugh and then started to lift her upwards. With a small bit of jostling, she found herself slipping from his palm and into the tangle of his brown hair. Flutter shifted herself around a bit to try and find a comfortable place to sit.

"Hmm. We could go for a walk. So long as you don't mind people seeing a butterfly on your head." She teased while fluttering her wings. "And don't worry, I need the practice staying on things. Once I find some friends that are super hero's too I'll be joining up with them I'm sure." She shared with a small nod of her head. Flutter then leaned down to lightly pat Jayke's forehead with her palm. "I wish you could be magical too Jayke. I tried to ask her if you could be but she said that it didn't work that way. We coulda been a awesome team!"

"Just be sure to keep an eye out for idiots who might try to swat you off my head." Jayke's tone was light and jesting, but he did feel a little worried. To many of the people around him, a bug was a bug, no matter how harmless. People would step on crickets just as easily as scorpions, and they would doubtless swat at a harmless little butterfly just as easily as they would a wasp, probably even thinking that they did the person a favor. Such disrespect for nature was one of the reasons Jayke preferred to be away from people in general. They had come so far from their native roots, delighting in nature and giving their animal (and insect!) brethren the same respect as they would their fellow man.

He chuckled a little as he walked out of his room. He didn't bother calling out to Deston that he was going for a walk; unlike the many fosters before him, Deston had the brains to assume that if Jayke wasn't in the house, then he was outside walking or doing one of many things that he, as a free little brother, was entitled to do. "Well, you never know; maybe one day I'll run into this lady of yours and she could make me magical too." His tone was less teasing than it had been about the swatting; he couldn't deny that it WOULD be awesome for him to have powers like his friend Crysta. Not to turn into a butterfly of course, but maybe something huge and impressive, something that would send the idiots and animal tormentors scurrying for cover like the disease-ridden sewer rats that they were.

He opened the door and stepped out into the light, walking a little slowly ans awkwardly so's not to jolt the little butterfly girl perched among his brown curls.

"If someone tries to swat me they'll find I've got more Owie power then a whole nest of riled up hornets!" Crysta jokingly informed Jayke as he started to walk. She fell silent then and slipped her staff over her shoulder and into a little sheath between her butterfly wings. Reaching down, she grabbed a lock of curly hair in each hand and attempted to keep from tumbling off Jaykes head. In truth, it was not nearly as easy as she would have thought. Each step came with this lurching movement forwards, then a pause, and another lurch. Depending on where Jayke was looking, his head tilted unevenly just slightly. She wondered if this was what it was like to ride a camel...or maybe an elephant? Crysta gave a soft giggle as she imagined Jayke now with gray wrinkly skin and big elephant clomper feet. Oh! An giant fanning ears! The image of her friend as some strange animal person amused her so very much. So much so that she didn't even realize that Jayke had carried her outside and into the bright light. Crysta closed her eyes and tilted her head back some as she delighted in her magical form's seeming unique sense of the world.

"I hope so Jayke. I'll pray that she chooses you. I would be so very happy if you could help me protecting people." She mused wistfully. "I just know you have the right spirit for it. I guess there is something more though. Something that only She can sense." Crysta reached a hand down to pat Jaykes head. "Until then you can be my sidekick!"

It was all Jayke could do to keep from tilting his head slightly upward to try and catch a glimpse of those tiny butterfly wings on top of his head. She must have been resting her little feet on more hair, because he couldn't feel anything at all on top of his head; only a slight tugging on a few strands of hair as though he had something sticky caught in it. He closed the door behind him and spoke to the air, considering himself too far from the ear of John Q. Public to care if he was seen talking to himself. "Doing alright up there? I'll try to walk softly, but I know it might be a rough trip anyway."

He decided to take a path through the forest before ending up anywhere public, just to calm his nerves a bit and at least give Crysta a chance to get settled into his rhythm. He liked the feel of the uneven ground. still perceptible under his sneakers, and the general air of calm that seemed so absent from a sidewalk lined with busy people going about their business like ants. He chuckled aloud as he walked. "Sidekick, huh? What, like The Luna-Moth Kid or something? I'd still rather be something with some sting though......like a yellow jacket!"

Crysta slipped a little and fluttered her wings to catch herself. She didn't want to accidentally jerk too hard on Jaykes hair. When he would ask her how she was doing, Flutterby gave a small laugh. "Head riding is really hard. I don't think it matters if you walk slow or not." She never knew that someone could move their head so much, it made her wonder how much she moved her own head! Flutterby gave her attempt to ride Jayke a few more minutes, then fanned her wings gain. Snapping them, she lifted up off his head and fluttered down towards his shoulder.

"I'm gong to fall off if I stay on your head. Maybe if you were wearing a hat I could really grip it wouldn't be so hard. But hair is slippery and slidey!" She informed Jakye. With a glance around them, Crysta couldn't help but smile. "The Yellow Jacket? You really do have it in you to pull off a bee. What about a dragon fly? You got a dragons spirit in fierceness I think." She casually suggested. "Course you could always just be Sparkledust! Sidekick of Flutterby!" Okay, she wasn't serious about that at all but she couldn't resist teasing her best friend!

Well so much for a smooth trip, Jayke thought as he felt a few rocks crunch under his sneaker and cause him to tilt slightly. He loved the uneven ground when he was just out for a walk in the woods, but he should have known that it would be a bit rougher for his little passenger. He smiled when he saw the rapid beat of wings out of the corner of one eye and then that she had moved to his shoulder; now it'd be more like she would be his conscience as he roamed around, plotting what he could possibly do with super stingy-bug powers.

"Hmm.....dragonflies are pretty wicked-looking, and they ARE fast...." Not the most fear-inducing bug though, since they didn't bite or sting..... He almost fell over at Crysta's suggestion for a name. "Sparkledust?! Oh for the love of.....nobody would take me seriously for sure then!" But he let his laughter betray the fact that he knew she wasn't serious as he continued to walk. He looked around as he walked, being careful not to turn his head too much and have his hair brush the little Flutter right off of his shoulder. "So these pink Furbies......they don't hang out here in the woods, do they?"

It was far more comfortable on Jaykes shoulder. Flutter leaned up against his ear as he walked so carefully. Inwardly she was already imagining Jayke in some super heroesque outfit. With a cape and a mask and fancy boots that reached his knees. Crysta placed a hand over her mouth to stifle a giggle. "So who said being a superhero means you always gotta be serious?" She asked him with a smile. "My name is Flutterby after all. It's not the most serious name for a superhero either."

Jayke had posed a rather serious question though, and she was trying to find a answer for it. When her slight stalling teasing came to a end, she found herself shrugging her shoulders. "I do not know Jayke. They seem like they have a purpose..which is eating people. Since there are not a lot of people in the woods I wouldn't think you'd find one here. But your a people so maybe one could wander in? I really wish I knew more. I am sorry, I'm really new to being a magic girl. As soon as I learn more stuff I'll be sure to let you know!"

Still smiling, Jayke couldn't resist adopting a teasing tone in return. "That's true....." Still walking, he thrust his arm out, the one not attached to the shoulder Crysta was riding on, and punched the air in front of him. "Run you cowardly villains, for you are pursued by the irrepressible, all-powerful FLUTTERBY!" he looked up as a few birds flew out from the trees at his shout, throwing down a few choice chirrups and caws before vanishing into the sky. He chuckled and shrugged a tiny shrug. "Guess they weren't impressed, huh?"

He felt his smile diminish as Crysta spoke about the monsters and how the ate people. It still seemed so absurd; little pink Furby creatures eating people like piranhas, but then again, with a tiny winged version of his friend riding about on his shoulder, who was he to talk about absurdity right at the moment? "Well, just make sure you're careful; even superheroes and magical people can get hurt. I wouldn't want you to end up Man-eating Furby food." He almost thought about seeing if he could reason with one if he ever came in contact with it; he had always had a certain way with animals. On the other hand, there were animals out there who only knew of their need to feed, such as termites, and expressed their solitary feeling by satisfying that feeling. Doubtless these would be the same way, though he had better not catch one of them trying to take a bite out of an unsuspecting rabbit or squirrel; magical creature or no, he would punt it like a furry pink football.

When the birds fluttered away, Flutterby gave a small happy laugh. The tiny shrug of the shoulder under her brought her laughter to a halt, but did nothing to dim her smile. "Oh I don't know. Maybe they have flown off to spread the word of the all-powerful Flutterby to all the other critters in the area?" She happily joked back.

There was a seriousness to Jaykes tone now, so Flutterby allowed her smile to fade some. "Course I'll be careful. Don't worry Jayke." She assured him as she fanned her wings open and took flight from his shoulder. Bobbing up and down in the air, she danced around Jayke and gave a small giggle. "I'm gunna head off and see if I can find any pink thingys right now. I'll see you at school tomorrow? I can tell you more about magical stuff maybe?" She tauntingly offered Jayke with a small wink of her left eye. Perhaps if he had something to look forwards to he wouldn't be in such a unhappy mood in a place he felt he did not fit in.

"Well, crows in general are pretty chatty, so you may very well be right." Jayke smiled a bit as he stopped to allow Flutterby a good takeoff from his shoulder. "I know you'll be careful, and I hope I don't sound like a big old nag. I always worry about people that I care about." He didn't bother to mention that given that fact, it had been a while since he had really worried about someone. Deston and Lillian didn't count; they were mellow enough to hug a grizzly and probably have it eating granola from their hands.

Jayke's eyes followed his friend's form as she flounced around with the breeze. "Of course, and you won't have to worry about me telling anyone; I don't really have any other friends to tell, right?" He managed a bitter chuckle, but even to his own ears it had a little less venom than usual; Crysta had succeeded in giving him something to look forward to in school. Who knew; in time if he could see her every day, he may just stick around for all of the meaningless drivel for most of the week. "See you tomorrow Crys-....Flutterby!"
