She didn't even notice the deer-in-the-headlights look in Kirin's gold eyes, or she might have apologized. As it was, she kept finding her way closer and closer to the redhead as she worked, curious. Jada had never had to fix her own computer before, or even open it up, so what could she say?

Technology wasn't her forte, which was silly. Book smarts had always been her thing. Many had said she had no common sense. Technology didn't require street smarts, it required one to know how to look at a book.

Spare hard drive. RAM. CPU. She knew these terms, but she would need google to actually understand what Kirin was saying. "Hey, you're the lady with the brain. We'll try whatever you think is best." She tugged a chair over, plopping down in it and watching with fascination as the little shiny cards were taken out, put back in, and the cover put back on.

"No Pfffffffffffffffffbbbbzzzzzzzt!" Jada blinked- she had made that noise far too accurately. Excited, she leaned in, watching, waiting. "So will all my pictures and bookmarks be in the proper place if this works?" She was almost wiggling, and if she was an animal, her tail would probably be wagging. If this worked, Kiri would be her hero.

And it did! Windows was starting! She gave a happy cry and caught herself right before she hugged her new best friend. Right- Kiri didn't like touching. She paused guiltily, arms outstretched, then sat down demurely, staring at the computer. "So is it fixed?"

Kirin must have been spending too much time around Jada - for once, he didn't even tense as he noticed the incoming glomp. He was prepared to suffer through it, maybe a single roll of the eyes or brief sigh. So when Jada cut herself off before making contact, Kirin was left feeling... a little empty. Weird. Kirin shook his head, trying to snap himself out of it. What did he care if Jada hugged him or not? It didn't mean anything.

"Yes, all your data will be fine," he reassured Jada instead. "That's on your hard drive. RAM is just -" He cut himself off before he launched into some technical spiel that Jada would have no hope in following. "RAM is temporary memory, to make things load faster. It wipes when your computer shuts down. The permanent stuff is stored elsewhere."

Kirin stood up and offered the chair to Jada. "Which doesn't mean you shouldn't check, just in case." He doubted there was any kind of secondary error, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure.

"I'm going to have to read some books on this stuff." she admitted finally. "I've just been..." Should she admit she was lazy? Not all that interested in breaking the little moving parts inside a machine? Would rather learn to fix a car? "...busy." It was an obvious evasion, but she didn't want to leave the sentence hanging out there.

One thing she hadn't been too busy to do: Take pictures.

When she opened up the file on her desktop labelled "Piccus" it took several moments to load. The folders were neatly categorized with a date, and there were tons of them. Some of them were scans, but some of them were more important than childhood pictures. Jada clicked straight for the pictures taken by the professional photographers at her debut. There were well over a thousand in there- she should probably delete them, but the CDs with them on there were in her storage unit. So she had to keep them. (Jada was a digital packrat. She had well over 16 gigs of pictures, including an entire folder devoted to pictures of her 'dream homes' and another with pictures of her future wedding. With over 100 dress options, which continuously varied depending on the season and the current fashion. Then there were the memes. And the pretty pictures. And...)

Pictures safe, she darted to the next location- her resume folder. Safe!

Kirin was her hero. "Gah! I owe you. I don't know how yet, but I'll find a way to thank you. I am so at your beck and call. Thank you!" For a moment, she debated letting it end there. But she couldn't.

Instead, she beamed up at the redhead, and said, "I appreciate it, sugarlips." Ah! That lunch at Casa Doro had been one of the best ever.

"You don't have to," Kirin replied to Jada's assertion that she was going to read up on computer 'stuff'. "Most people get along fine without knowing it. Of course, they also end up paying out the a** when repairs are needed, because they don't know awesome redheads who will come over at the break of dawn to fix their computers."

Kirin deserved some appreciation, okay? So his smug smile was only to be expected as Jada lavished him with praise after finding all her photos exactly where they should be. He was basking in it when Jada dropped the dreaded sugarlips.

One of Kirin's eyebrows twitched.

"You're welcome, snugglemuffin."

Jada really wanted to ruin that smug smirk. Probably by tweaking Kiri's nose, but she wasn't particularly picky... "Most people do. I am one of those who only recently acquired my very own awesome redhead." Well, there was her sister, but Zora was a video game guru, not computer fixing guru. The heiress waited a few moments, opening up a document and looking over her incredibly short resume, before- "I've been up since 6am." Hah! Calling this the break of dawn.

She glanced up at the other woman when snugglemuffin was dropped, lips pursed. At least it wasn't tiger toes- that had been the worst possible nickname ever. "Ever wonder how our conversations devolve into worst 'cute little nickname' contests? It's your fault." She waited, deliberately, for Kiri to open her mouth, feigning, and then said, "Because you're a redhead." Lips twitched.

Was Jada picking a fight? Probably. Testing her newest girl friend's people-person humor limits, compared to their first meeting? Definitely.

"So now that I have woken you up at the 'crack of dawn,'" she stood, moving her purple monster over to the wooden desk and reaching for the little cord thing that went in the socket and made magical printing things happen. Opening one of the doors, she checked paper and poked at the button that looked like a power button. "What are your plans for the rest of the day, oh Guru-Mistress of Computerdom?" She had to print out resumes, and get ready for an interview, but it was still early!

Kirin wasn't buying it. He eyed Jada sideways, features narrowed in a clear 'what are you talking about, you crazy person?' expression but didn't otherwise engage. Picking on the redheads wasn't new, especially to someone who'd gone through public school. Worse was the stupid 'hug a redhead day' someone had invented, but after a few bloody noses people had decided that the Ice Queen was better left exempt.

And if he needed any more proof that Jada was insane, being up at 6am definitely counted. "I didn't go to bed til after 4am," he countered. Kirin wasn't lazy, thank you Jada, he just kept strange hours.

He shook his head when Jada asked his plans for the day. "You're not dragging me shopping," he guessed where this was going and cut her off before she could start. "I need to get a few more computer parts, then I'm building a PC for some college student-" who was clearly more interested in online gaming than their coursework with specs like the ones they'd given Kirin, "- and at some point, catching up on my missed sleep. Besides, don't you have things you need to do, that required files from your laptop?"

"I went to bed a little after midnight." she said it smugly, feeling responsible for going to bed at an earlier time than 4am. Kirin's glare was noticed, but Jada blithely ignored it. It was easy, when Kirin would now forever be Jada's harmless, computer-fixing Cutie-Patootie.

But not going shopping? That was not the act of a loving friend. Jada scowled, then harrumphed. "Kirin." She wasn't pleading, nor was she giving Kirin the pouty face- she knew that wouldn't work as planned. Or would it? Hmmm... No, Kirin was probably too grouchy to be suckered by her pouty face. "You've been avoiding shopping with me." A hand to her hips, and a scowl she couldn't stop.

Bad. Bad girl.

"We can do your computer shopping first. And I have been stressed all morning because of my evil 'puter." She reached out, latched onto the redhead's arm. "Come on. Stress relief. You can tell me what makes me look fat, and I can get some LumberJill out of your wardrobe."
PostPosted: Fri Dec 30, 2011 5:02 pm

Yes, yes, Kirin had. The comments on his wardrobe - and seeing Jada's own - had been warning enough that shopping with Jada would not be a short or easy task. He sighed. It seemed he was caught this time. At least he'd be able to get the extra computer parts he needed, first. And maybe he could distract Jada with lunch and then it would be time for those interviews or whatever she'd needed off her computer and he'd be free...

"Lumber-" Kirin broke off with a scowl. "You do realise I just wear what's comfortable, right? That's more than I can say about half the things I've seen in you wear."

There was no way anyone could find clothes so tight and about-to-fall-off comfortable. And don't even get him started on the skyscraper heels Jada preferred! Kirin would take 'comfortable and safe' over 'fashionable and about-to-be-injured' any day.

Jada might get some stress relief out of this, but Kirin doubted he could say the same. Rubbing at his temple, he huffed. "Fine," he said, making sure he sounded very put-upon. He gestured to the door. "Shall we?"

Kirin sighed, and Jada's face glowed with victory. She hugged her friend, trying to cool her exuberance, and then- "Stay right there! Don't you dare leave without me!" She darted for her bedroom, already pulling off her one top, and left the door open.

Closets- she knew they sounded like they were slamming, and Castor stood from his place on her bed and leisurely strolled out the door. He hopped up on the table in front of Kirin and then tilted his head, expectantly. Come on. Scratch me. You know you want to.

Jada shot back out of the bedroom in a pair of capris and a different top. She pulled on a low-heeled pair of shoes for her by the door, wedges. "Ready!" she told Kirin, and latched onto the other woman's arm, gleeful. "Thank you." Kirin really was an awesome friend. "I promise, I'll keep this as painless as possible for you. I have experience, you see. None of my other girls like to shop either."

It was sad.

Kirin stared down at the cat like most people would stare at a loaded shotgun pointed at their face.

Come on. Scratch me, the cat seemed to say as he tilted his head and posed on the table. You know you want to.

The moment he moved his hand close to the cat, it was going to tear it to shreds, Kirin thought with narrowed eyes. He didn't know why, then, his own hand was entering his field of vision, slowly reaching out to the orange-and-black furred head. Constantly suspecting that the trap was going to spring closed any moment now, Kirin ran a tentative hand from Castor's head down along his back.

"Ready!" Jada's return interrupted any potential man-to-cat bonding (or mauling).

Kirin blanched. "Wait, you can't even convince girls to shop with you? Other girls, I mean, like girly girls?" This did not bode well for Kirin if even other females found Jada too much of a shopaholic for them.

It was a trap. Castor was already opening his mouth when his Girl returned, and the fangs retreated, and he purred instead, tail lashing. I'll get you yet. He butted his head into the redhead's hand, faking a friendlier demeanor.

But always, always, his kitty eyes were narrowed. Watching. Waiting.

"I can convince them." she said, dragging Kiri with her towards the door. Don't dig in your heels now, plzthnks. "My besties just either shop like men, or are fuddy-duddies. So don't worry." She glanced up at her friend, beaming.

"I'll be gentle."

She closed the hotel door behind them, guiding the redhead towards the eleavtor.
