"Has anyone told you you can by annoying positive," Unai asked, though the effect was thrown off by a slight crinkling at the corners of his eyes and a simple twitch at the corner of his mouth.

"Walk it is then. Let me know if you start feeling thirsty or queasy. Quickest way to die in the desert is dehydration!" Not that they'd be going into the desert itself, more like skirting the edges where there was still life. But this was actually one time where Unai's cautious pessimism wasn't totally unfounded; it was just as easy to die at the edge of the desert as it was in the desert itself.

Ambra tilted her head slightly, shooting an amused smile at Unai. "Actually...no. Would you like to be the first?" She asked. She wasn't offended or anything. Honestly, considering how much on the pessimistic side Unai fell, she was surprised he hadn't mentioned it before. Still, he didn't seem to mind her 'annoyingly positive' outlook too much, if the smile was anything to go by.

Ambra smiled inwardly. Smile? On any other fox, that would be slight amusement if that. On Unai, though, anything resembling a happy expression was a pretty big thing. "Don't worry. I'm neither stupid, nor have a death wish. I'll definitely tell you if I get thirsty, you're the only one who knows where the good water sources are."

"I believe I already was the first," Unai said cheekily, and actually tried his paw at a wink. Normally he wasn't given to silly or flirty stuff, but the situation just seemed to call for it. Still felt silly...

The pair began to walk, keeping a fairly even pace that wasn't too fast or too lingering, and did their best to stay out of direct sunlight when there was any opportunity for shade. The hills that Unai was actually trying to reach soon can up on the horizon, shimmering in the heat. It didn't look too far, but distances were deceiving in the desert.

"How you doing so far," Unai asked Ambra.

Ambra smiled back, not wanting to laugh and have it misinterpretted. She winked back and grinned, glad that Unai was branching into different moods. The flirting was nice too, since that's the only thing she could possibly call it. Unai was a great fox, once one saw past his mopey exterior.

When Unai stopped them on their walk, Ambra was only a little thirsty. Usually she could go for quite a few hours and was about to tell Unai such until she remembered his warning. Pausing, she examined how she felt with how far they had come and realized she should definitely drink something. "I'm not about to keel over or anything, but I am a little thirsty. Is there water nearby?"

Unai made a mental map in his head and examined it. They'd been going over small hills, more like mounds than hills, just recently, and they'd been getting slightly bigger. "There should be something coming up soon," he said. "Not quite over the next hill, but either the one after that or the one after that." He tilted his eye, eyes narrowed in concern. He want to come across as nagging though, so all he said was, "If the thirst starts to bother you, find a pebble and suck on it. It helps."

He stretched his legs a little, turned back his head and signaled Ambra with a look that they were about to move out again, then stepped forward.

"I'm not quite that far gone, Unai. I'm sure I'll make it over a couple of dunes. If I were in the forest, I could travel for hours yet. The desert being a whole different environment, I'm depending on you to know better than me, so I'm just giving you an update." Ambra smiled at him confidently. "If I do get super thirsty, I'll definitely use a pebble."

She stepped out after him, keeping up easily enough. It was nice, this walk, even if it was hot and sandy. It was all in the company, she decided.

Unai actually chuckled. "Well people tend to react differently from others, not to mention you're used to another environment altogether. I prefer the safer than sorry method, if you haven't picked that up yet," he said, even winking at Ambra before moving on. Both weren't his normal types of reactions, and it had to wonder if this could be a illness of some kind.

Ambra chuckled along with Unai. A 'safer than sorry' method may be a bit of an understatement, but Unai did seem to follow that path. Even if he did dip into morbidness on occasion. "Oh... That's the method you follow?" She teased, eyes twinkling up at him with mischievous merriment even through her glasses. "It's a good method, Unai. It makes me feel safe around you, otherwise I wouldn't have followed you into a desert that has the potential to dehydrate you."

Unai rolled his eyes. "Very funny. I'd be more worried about you getting dried up in the desert than myself. For one if I did dry up it's cause I was being stupid. I've got a twin brother who could take my place in the family anyway, and my sisters don't really need me around."

Unai glanced over at Ambra, curious. It was honestly the first time anyone had every said anything about feeling safe in his company. Of course it was hard to feel safe when he generally was spouting out doomsday scenarios so he understood it, but that just made it all the more bizarre to him.

Ambra chuckled at a completely dehydrated Unai floating around in the wind and over sand dunes. Her too. Both of them floating over the sand dunes. She supposed it shouldn't be a funny image, but she couldn't help it, her mind supplied a blue striped leaf and a black and green leaf twirling around in a dust devil and it entertained her.

Looking up at Unai, she hesitated. She didn't want to sound like she was lecturing him, but she couldn't just ignore some of what he was saying. Slowly, and picking her words carefully, she said, "You're very good at judging situations and finding what we shouldn't do and, by process of elimination, what we should do in order to survive. But I think you aren't as good at judging foxes. Twin brother or not, he can't take your place because he isn't you, and he proabably doesn't know half as much about what dangers to avoid. I'd certainly not follow him into a desert."

Ambra snorted, well, she didn't know Unai's brother...but that wasn't her point. And his sisters should be glad to have someone in their family that could keep them safe from unexpected dangers.

Unai listened to Ambra the entire time she spoke with an unreadable expression. When she finished he tilted his head and a half-smile, rueful, tugged at the corners of his mouth.

"Ouch. Next time I need to be put in my place I'll come to you." He sighed. "Well you might be right. Kinda sad, but I really don't even know my brother all that well. We're twins, and he's a stranger." For a moment Unai looked more put out that he had all that day, his expression on of brooding, then he came back to himself.

"We'll see the oasis when we top this hill," he said, obviously putting the subject of his family behind him, and picking up his pace just a hair, hoping to get there sooner.

Ambra gave a wry smile back to him. "I suppose I should apologize about that little lecture...but I meant what I said. You are unique and really nice and very knowledgeable. If other foxes can't, or wont, see that through your, granted, pessimistically inclined personality, that's their problem." Ambra paused and shook her head. "And I'm lecturing again." She grinned, knowing she could be opinionated when she wanted to be.

Ambra wanted to ask more about his twin, but the subject change was obvious enough for her to drop the subject. "Oh, good. I'm glad we'll finally be able to get something to drink."

"Self-fulfilling prophecy," Unai said, giving a half-smile over his should at Ambra. "I predict something negative about my person and prove it tue despite protests to the good. The next prediction is stronger, and just as true. It turned into an endless spiral that intensifies as it goes."

He shrugged. "Though I might have been pessimistically-inclined even as a little, even if I wasn't as bad. We all have our own quirks."

Unai noted Ambra's curious look in his glance at her, and knew she probably had questions. Curiousity seemed to be a natural part of Ambra and one he took as a matter of course with her, but part of him was afraid that she'd start asking him questions with less than satisfactory answers. Surely she'd be disgusted with how little he seemed to have bonded with his family, and think him flaky at best and heartless at worst!

He tried to shift the focus off himself, feeling a hint of desperate panic. "So what about you. Did I ever ask you about your family before?"

"Yeah, we do all have our quirks. I, for one, am 'annoyingly positive'." Ambra said with a grin in Unai's direction. "I don't know if I'm protesting your negative predictions, but I know that that's not all I see when with you. Maybe that's helped quite a bit by my own personality."

She noticed Unai glancing at her, but was still surprised when he asked about her family. Of all the subjects for him to bring up, her family wasn't one she would have guessed. "There's actually not much to tell. I was an only child, which is odd since most foxes have at least two kits. I was close to both my parents as a kit, but I've always been strong willed." Ambra chuckled and tilted her head slightly in remembrance.

"I was determined to go out and explore once I became an adult...and I did. I haven't seen my mom and dad since, but that's alright. I'm sure, like me, that they're happy and that they are having a good life together. And I'm sure they think about me every once in a while...just like I think of them every so often."

"Hmmm. Well there's that saying that out of sight is out of mind, but I guess there's also absence making the heart grow fonder." Unai tilted his head, looking back at Ambra and his red eyes puzzled. Until he'd met the cat-like vixen, there'd never been anyone he really thought of before. Maybe his sisters from time to time, but those that didn't have mates were tough enough to look out for themselves.

He was forstalled from having to say anything though by simple fact of arriving at the oasis. "Here we are," Unai said, for no particular reason, then trotted forward and bent his head to drink at the cool, clear water, surrounded by the only real plant life for a bit distance.
