She laughed with glee as she jumped out ahead of the other mare, passing her gleefully. She could smell the ocean, hear it's waves. Just the other side of those trees the just knew it. "Good luck getting through those trees with those braids!" She chided the other mare as she loped ahead.

They were almost there! Flash Black charged ahead again but, to her surprise, it did feel a little like she was losing steam. She was hurting where her mane had forcefully tugged at her skin and she had a fine sheen of sweat covering her sides. She wasn't truly used to racing. "A little more," she panted to herself.
"And don't worry about my braid!" she shouted loudly. "I've got it covered!" She turned her head around and grabbed the end of her flailing braid in her teeth. She grinned wildly around it and put all her energy into one last sprint. If she was going to lose this race, at least it wouldn't be because of her braid tripping her again!

She smirked inwardly as she ran. She knew the other might be able to beat her is she wasn't careful. Still, she pressed on, willing herself to go faster in her awkward lope. Branches scratched at her hide as she pushed through the trees, the grass gave way to sand making her run feel stiffer. Salt stung her nostrils as they flared with her heavy breathing, waves breaking rang in her ears.

Flash Black's breath heaved in and out of her nostrils. She gripped her braid tightly in her teeth, a taste so familiar that she didn't notice it. Her tail was stretched straight behind her, counterbalance to her running and turning. She ran so hard that she found herself getting lightheaded with exertion... and Enakai was obviously winning and going to win.
She narrowed her eyes in frustration. She was going to lose! She wasn't generally a competitive person but found herself wishing she could have been a little faster. She needed to practice her sprints, apparently.

She could hear Flash black behind her growing more and more winded as they ran. Joy crept up but she had to fight it. She couldn't afford to get too cocky just yet. Her legs stretched out as she willed herself to hold her pace. She couldn't afford to give up her stride just yet. not when they were so close. The grass beneath her hooves soon gave way to sand and her muscles screamed in protest to the added resistance the loose sand offered.

Flash Black began to slow her pace as she came to grips that she had already lost. She gave a pouting frown and then slowed down even more. She came to a stop right where the grass began to thin as it reached the sand. She stopped and stood on that median, scowling at the water she saw glittering in front of her. She fought to catch her breath and dropped her braid from her mouth. There was no point holding onto that anymore.
Abruptly, her demeanor changed. She lost her aggravated expression and took on one of deliberate causal innocence. She stopped and began to pluck at the grass around her. Except for the sweat dripping off of her, it looked for all the world as if she had deliberately trotted over to the area to graze.

Sweat lathered and foamed where her legs had brushed against her body. She was use to running into the water and playing the sand though causing a bit more effort to move, felt nice to her. brought back memories of time with her father. Soon she felt the sand stiffen under her and the waves pull at her ankles causing her legs to slightly sink as she stopped in the water. She could go further in, but looking back, she remembered the other mare and gave a small chuckle. "Good race, good race indeed." With a bit of effort, she pulled at her legs and got them unstuck from the sand, her tail flicking as a wave came in splashed cool salty water against her body.

Looking up from her grazing, Flash Black noticed Enakai standing in the waves. Her tail twitched thoughtfully and she gulped down her mouthful of grass. She might be pretending not to care... but actually, that looked quite fun! "Fine fine. A race is a race," she said to no one in particular. Then, she picked herself up and dashed as fast as she could toward the water!
As it turned out, 'as fast as she could' under the current conditions meant a slow plodding half-trot. Her legs didn't want to move for some reason. She stared down at them as if they were strangers to her. "It's an awful lot of effort to get to the water," she remarked as she finally splashed in beside Enakai.

She chuckled lightly, as she waded out a little further. "But the water makes my muscles ache less." She smiled looking back at the mare. "Hrm.. I believe I need to think of what to have you do now as per our wager...." She eyed the horn a moment before shaking the thought aside. She really was for once at a loss of just what to ask of the mare without asking her to deface herself. "I have it! You shall be my friend." She nodded sagely as she made up her mind. She was a collector of the strange and wonderfully unique. Croatoan was a good example of her delightful little collection.

Flash Black stared intently down into the water. Bits of seaweed floated and twined around her legs and she thought she could see mysterious black shapes swimming around her. In reality the shapes she saw were more likely just shadows on the sand, but she saw them differently. The push and pull of the water was almost hypnotic and she wondered what it would be like to drift off with the fish and never touch land again.
"Friend?" She blinked up from her staring. "That is..." She paused dramatically and her large strange eyes grew wide and staring. "That is excellent!" She cackled with delight and pranced in place in the water. "Can you tell me what the fish talk about? I want to know what they could tell me about drowning!"

Enakai quirked a quizzical look. "The.... fish?" A strange grin appeared on her face. Snapping a mouth full of sharp teeth at the water she looked up. "They often scream and flee from me. so what they say I much never hear.. It's what they sound like as they gasp for air that I often hear."

"Very interesting!" Flash Black giggled gleefully. Fish screaming! There was an idea she had never thought of before. She laughed again at the thought of tiny fishy mouths open wide in terror as they swam away from the deadly Enakai. It made her curious about whether bugs could scream too. Just because she couldn't hear them didn't mean they weren't making a sound. That sort of logic made sense to her in her twisted mind.
"Maybe you could catch a fish and let me stick my head under to talk to it," she suggested. "Or you could translate? I don't think I speak fish." She had transitioned from competitor to friend in the blink of an eye. As far as she was concerned, her and Enakai were great buddies by now.

She couldn't help but to chuckle. "I'm not sure I'm the best one to translate fish speak... The scream.. it's about all I know they do... I'm pretty sure I wouldn't know if one was talking to me." She eyed the water a moment, speculating if she should try and catch a fish for her friend's experiment. " Perhaps another time we can test this theory of yours.. I'm certain if a fish saw me coming it's flee... Predator and prey and all.."
Looking back at the other mare, she moved to a shallower area before settling where the waves could lap at her sides and tail as she lay in the sand. She'd cooled off some which had been her intention with being in the water. "The underwater world's full of some interesting things though. You never know what you might come across."

Flash Black cocked her head with great interest while listening to the kelpi. She had truly found a valuable friend indeed! Now she knew someone who had access to the strange world of the deep. Even if she couldn't go down there and swim with the fish, she could do so secondhand by talking with Enakai!
"Maybe," she suggested. "Maybe you could teach me how to breathe underwater?" She grinned wistfully. "Then I could talk to the fish myself! And I think it'd be fun to be a sea monster, for a little while at least." She liked the thought of herself disappearing and emerging from beneath the waves. She might even be able to talk to the spirits underwater then! That would be a new and exciting experience.

"I don't so much breath underwater as I hold my breath for long periods of time... I'm only part kelpi so there are some things I wasn't granted with." She thought some. "But I guess I could teach you to hold your breath and swim underwater." Why not? She thought as she eyed the water thoughtfully. She remembered how her parents taught she and her brother to swim.. how much more different could this be?
