The pup leaned back against Ren, letting his body relax after the excitement of the flight. He watched the clouds and the colours cast from the sun, and for a moment was able to ignore the sharp metallic taste in his mouth. It didn't seem to matter so much. Not when he felt so comfortable, all limp and free from the efforts of scowling and being independent, not having to worry about what others were thinking of him or that they might see his weaknesses...
As Ren nuzzled his hair, Jove made a little murmuring noise, a soft, running vocalization might have sounded like one of Ren's foxfires idly talking to itself. It was a happy little grumble, perhaps even an equivalent of Ren's own pleased purring.
Before stumbling across his brother, Jove had never felt that sense of complete trust, and how rewarding it could be to give himself up to someone and know he would come to no harm. He kicked one leg gently over the edge of the tree branch, letting it swing in mid-air as he murmured happily. He wanted his caretaker to meet Ren, to show him the family he was collecting.
The pup had come a long way from that little ghostling that had gotten stuck in a lobster trap.

Ren could feel the small vibrations coming from Jove's little body; a quiet rumbling, a low murmuring that almost mimicked his own purring noise. It was the sound one of his pet foxfires might have made when they were happy or content; the sound that Ren himself made when someone played with his hair or his ears (though that was still a secret to all but a few). It was a nice sound; Ren wished he could record it and play it back to himself.
Growing up, he had never had a chance to be an older brother. Medieval was his twin, his other half. For the most part she had been the one he relied on, not the other way around, though he he had tried to take care of her the way a brother stood. He could still remember the coolness of her fingers against his forehead as she sang him softly to sleep, feel the gentle brush of her hand patting his hair comfortingly when he was in need of some reassuring. And for a long time it had just been the two of them, looking out for one another.
Until his parents had poisoned her mind, however. And those memories were now just that - memories, frozen in his mind, unable to be relived or redone. Medieval was gone now, the model example of a perfect gryphon child. Those nights they had spent together were gone.
So it meant more to Ren than he could express that he had found Jove - found happiness with this younger boil, with protecting and caring and loving Jove like an older brother would have to his younger one. He and Jove were not related by blood, but that made no matter. They were still brothers in every sense of the word, every possible way.
Ren turned his head, pecking the side of Jove's face, up near his temple. "So what now, Freckles?" he said lightly, squeezing the boil tightly in a hug. "Shall we fly back down and maybe get some rest or play a game or something?"

Jove's little murmuring noise intensified as he was squeezed. To be honest he could have sat up there until the sun went down completely, and then turn around to watch the moon rise, but things with a pulse couldn't just sit around forever. The pup could still remember the first time Ren had a foot fall asleep, he had been terrified on his brother's behalf until he was reassured it wasn't a big deal. Just uncomfortable.
He ceased his muttering and wiggled around to face his brother, still with a faint smile on his face. Part of him wanted to fly some more, but looking down had not yet ceased to make him feel dizzy, and he doubted Ren would take him up again when he was still shaky from the first flight.
Although Jove could have easily gotten out of the tree on his own, he opted to lean against Ren instead for the same reasons he had already thought of. The gryphon would just freak out if he fell out of the tree... Ren freaked out over all sorts of silly things.

His leg was falling asleep. Ren gave it a jiggle, lifting his arms briefly as Jove twisted around to look up at him. Smiling down at his little brother, Ren leaned forward, resting his forehead against the boil's. He wouldn't mention the fact that he had seen what could have passed for a smile on Jove's face; heaven knew how stubborn the other could be, but Ren knew he had seen it. It made his heart leap happily in his chest, and subconsciously he clung to Jove tighter, wanting to see that smile widen, hear the laugh he had heard before. His little brother's smiles, his laughter, his happiness; they were all so rare and far apart that every moment of them was treasured, every second.
"Ready to go now?" Ren asked him as he lifted his head back up, smoothing some of Jove's hair back away from his face and pecking a quick kiss to the boil's forehead. Grinning at him, he all but fell sideways, wings spreading as he caught Jove up in his arms, soaring upwards at a much slower pace than he had before. He did not want to upset Jove's stomach again, so he kept it simple, his wings beating slowly in the air as he flew them back towards the school.
"Dinner time?" he asked him, and hugged Jove against his chest, pressing his face into the boil's hair. "Or sleep, or movie, or Scario Kart, or anything. Anything you want."

Jove felt his little stomach flutter as they were suddenly falling downwards out of the tree, and pressed his forehead against Ren's chest. Not entirely out of fear though. He knew his brother wouldn't drop him, that telltale smile said the gryphon had everything under control.
Sure enough they levelled out, and Jove once again relaxed. It really was amazing, he loved the feeling of the wind ruffling his ears.
He nodded against Ren's chest, clinging loosely to his brother's shirt. Yes, dinner or sleep or movie or Scario Kart was exactly what he wanted. Sure he wouldn't eat dinner, or actually go to sleep when Ren did, or come close to winning a race, but it was time with his brother and he loved that. The pup didn't bother to specify which one he wanted most, anything at all would do.

After a few moments they reached the school again, Ren alighting carefully and neatly onto the grass just outside the monster dorms. He didn't bother putting Jove down, however, instead keeping his little brother cradled against his chest. Though he knew Jove would probably scowl and wriggle and attempt to not be treated like a kid, Ren had no intentions of setting him down just yet.
"All right," he said, and used his foot to kick open the door to the dorms, heading down the hallway towards the stairs. "Time to have some quality brotherly time, don't you think?"
With a smile, Ren carted Jove up the stairs, down the second hall until he reached room 27B. Then he swept inside, all but threw Jove onto the bed (covered in massive amounts of pillows and a few foxfires), and went to get them both some hot chocolate.
